"other" category on itunes.

I recently got a 5th generation ipod, and in the few times I've synced my iTunes library with it (1,832 songs, and 1 video, 25.9 mb), itunes shows it to have 5.36 mb of "other." (and doesn't show any bars for the video category color). I'm wondering what this 'other' is, because I hardly have any album art, and in looking through the ipod, don't seem to have any other data--certainly not any of such size. Can someone explain what this "other" is, how it got there, and how to get rid of it?
Thanks!!

Ok, if it's in GBs it's unusually large.
If the iPod is enabled for disk use, you can look at the folders on the iPod through Explorer or Finder and delete anything you don't want.
Otherwise, see how to restore the iPod to factory settings which will erase the iPods contents and reclaim the used space.
Then reload the music from iTunes.

Why did my "other" category in itunes balloon to 10.5 gb after upgrade to ios 5?

Same happened here on my iphone 4. I heard it's something about bad meta data in the music files but I've no idea. It seems to be fixed by deleting the music from the iphone and then syncing it back on. No need to reset so far luckily!

  • After iOS 5 install on iPhone 4 my "other" category in iTunes is huge.

After iOS 5 install on iPhone 4 my "other" category in iTunes is huge. I can't find any clues as to why. Anyone else have this issue or any clues? I now only have 1gb left whereas before iOS5 I had 9 it's a bit strange. This isn't a complaint btw, just trying to problem solve!
    Gracias.

I have noticed the same thing! Any suggestions???  I also notice that when I uncheck the boxes for not including music videos and voice memos the size of the music folder increases, and it does it so much so that I exceed the space on my phone.

  • "Other" category on iTunes for iPod touch 4g

On iTunes, the "other" category on my ipod touch summary takes up 1.6 gb of my space, and I want to reduce that. Anybody know what the "other" category means, and how I can take off the space on it?

This indicates a corrupt file(s).  A restore should resolve.

  • Removing space in "Others" category in iTunes?

So this afternoon I tried removing all my apps in my iPad and resyncing all of them again, added a new app to be sync and stopped the syncing so I could sync them all. Then about 200mb of Other space appeared in the space of my iPad.
Tried restoring to factory defaults, then syncing all of them again, stopped it while it's syncing with music. The other increased up to .53gb.
Tried restoring to factory defaults and backups but didn't work, there are still leftovers (about .27gb). Haven't fully tried with iExplorer yet.

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Mysterious Orange "Other" category in itunes....Why is it full of....

I have the latest version of itunes synching with my 3G 16gb iphone. In itunes on the bottom, where it visually shows you by color what is filling up your phone (The Capacity Bar) it shows I have 10.6 GB pf orange "other". I have no podcvasts, video, music, or anything but apps syncedh so far. How do I find out what is occupying this space since the iphone file manager function (sic) is lame and I need to delete it in order to add enough music.?

You will need to do a restore in iTunes. You have a corrupted file filling up your disk space.

  • What is this "other" category?

What is this "Other" category in itunes when it shows what each category tells you how much room you have.  I've done some internet searching on this.  Mine is huge 13gb. So is the only way to clear it doing a complete restore? I'm on windows xp, with the latest update of itunes. I just had to add all my stuff back on from the previous update deleting it.  So I'd rather not have to do that all over again if necessary.  Thanks for any help.

A Restore takes a bit of time but, if done correctly, everything should be brought back automatically.
iTunes, select the iPod and then select the Summary tab.  Follow directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup.  You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPod.  Again, say "yes."

An "other" larger than about 1 1/2 GB indicates corrupted files.

Next, usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.

  • HELP!!!!!!  What does the "Other" category mean when iPhone is on iTunes???

    Hey,
I was fixing to sync my 3G iPhone when i realized i didnt have enough room for what i wanted because the "other" category is taking up so much space. Ive reset iTunes and iPhone but still see so much space taken up by "other." I've deleted all emails and texts and only have a few pictures on my iPhone but the "other" still takes up over 3gigs on my iPhone.
What is the "other" section and how do i get rid of items that the phone puts in the "other" category???
Also, as another seperate problem, i believe, i cant seem to locate the application link in my itunes library anymore for some reason even though the tab under the iPhone device link recognizes my applications in iTunes. How do I get the Applications link back in my iTunes library?
    THank you so much!!!

    OK,
I checked my prefernces and you were right, the applications weren't checked. Thank you.
As far as my "other" problem.....before i do the restore, how do I backup my iPhone? When i clicked on restore a moment ago it said it will erase my phone but i thought that iTunes periodically backedup my phone anyways.

  • What does the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iOS devices consist of?

I have searched everywhere for an "official" Apple response as to what the "Other" disk category in iTunes for iPads/iPod Tocuhes consists and have not found one.
    Apple, can you please answer?
I have multiple devices that contain the Other usage ranging anywhere from 1gb ~ 5gb and I'd like to know what it is.
    Thx!

These are user-to-user forums, they are not monitored by Apple.
'Other' contains things such as Safari's cache and cookies, notes, contacts, downloaded emails (and their attachments), and the content of third-party apps. Unless you have, for example, newspaper/magazine apps and/or third-party music or video apps (or other third-party apps with large content) then 1 to 5 gig sounds like too much and you might have some corrupt files.
Have you tried syncing with you computer to see if that reduces it, and/or a reset (press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds ignoring the red slider, after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot). Or you could try restoring to your last backup or back to new.

  • ITunes - What's in the 'Other' Category?

After syncing my iPod from iTunes, I noticed that I now have *1.49 GB in the 'Other' category,* 5.41GB in 'Audio' category, 367.1 MB in 'Video' category and 152.5 MB 'Free'. Total capacity 7.41GB (8G nano).
I have no shows, pictures, podcasts, etc. All I have are songs and videos.
So, what's in the 'Other' category/folder, and why is it so large?
I do not remember ever explicitly putting anything in 'Other'.
How can I get delete stuff from it - or should I delete stuff from it (the 'Other' category/folder')?

I did a 'restore' and most of the 'other' category capacity went down (1.49GB -> 69.4MB),
    thank goodness!!

  • When looking at how much room is taken up by audio, apps, etc. on your phone in iTunes, what is the "other" category?

When looking at how much room is taken up by audio, apps, etc. on your phone in iTunes, what is the "other" category?

"Other" contains documents and app data associated with apps.  It can also contain things like stored emails and browser history.  It's usually around 1-2gigs.  If it's any more than that, there's a chance that you have corrupted data on your iPad.  The only way to fix that problem is to restore your iPad to factory settings and start anew.

  • How to reduce the data in the "Other" category on the iTunes devices sync page?

How can I reduce the amount of date found in the "Other" category at the bottom of the screen on the iTunes device sync page?
    or
How can I view what data is contained within the "Other" category?
    and
I have 5.38 GBs of data in the "Other" category that I need to reduce or eliminate.

I got the answer off another thread I was reading. Just trying to spread it around now.
    Go to:
    Settings>General>Usage
Now for me, I have about 6GB of music on mine. What I did was select music, Now Left swipe the All Music row and press delete. After that I opened up my phone on iTunes and synced it like normal. The other data was gone after that.
    Hope this helps everyone!

  • I have a problem since installing ios6 when backing up to a laptop I got a message stating there was not enough room on the c: drive, the iTunes bar indicated that apps, etc were using space, but the yellow 'others' category was eating up all the space

I'm running out of space on the bar that shows the usage split (how many gb's for apps photos, music etc) the yellow 'others' category seems to be taking up all the available space. This is happening after updating to ios6. I don't seem to be able to get the backup on my laptop to complete successfully. I'm also unable to get Music to work on the phone. The picture of the cloud appears on screen, sometimes the blue bar appears, but after a while it bombs out and nothing else happens. Any ideas?

It does not immediately delete the files that are missing.. it merely tries to backup the new files it has discovered on the external drive. Since you moved the files there, the backup at least for a while will contain both copies.. and that is why it doesn't have enough space to backup.
Fixing the problem.. hmm pondini is the expert.. you should be able to delete the backup of the photos in existing backup.. there are instructions to do it.. but it is a very poor way to do things.
Much better. .archive off the existing backup.. this is long and slow but worth it. you need a usb drive of the same size as the TC drive. Then erase the TC and start a fresh set of backups.
The alternative is to use the USB drive as a new target.. but it is much slower than the TC internal drive.

  • In itunes, what is the "other" category on the bottom?

Im trying to download music, and it said i had too many pictures - so i deleted (manually) 1,571 pictures.. then my "other" category increased immensly and now says my phone is too full due to this "other" category. what is the other category and how can i make it smaller?

"other" is content that is not in the named categories.
Much more than a gb or so of "other" indicates corrupt files.
    A restore should resolve.
