"Other" category when syncing

How do you find out what is in the other category, I just downloaded the newest version of iTunes and now I have 10+GB if Other and there is not enough space for my regular files.

"Other" is the measure of used space on the iPod not taken up by Audio, Video & Photos. This includes the iPod's library and artwork plus any files you may have copied to your iPod in disk mode. The overhead for the library & artwork data is typically 1-2% of the size of the media, e.g. for 100Gb of Audio & Video expect to have around 1.5Gb of "Other". This information is needed for the iPod's operation and cannot be removed.
If you have significantly larger amounts of "Other", not related to files you've intentionally placed on the iPod, then these are probably disconnected copies of your media files or iPod libraries left over from failed sync operations. The only way to recover the space is to do a full restore.

  • 'Other' category when syncing.  What is in this category?

What makes up 'Other' category when syncing?  Why does this category take up over 50% of my usage?

""Other" is just about anything that doesn't not fit into one of the defined categories in iTunes such as Apps, Books, Photos, TV Shows, Movies, etc. It does contain data associated with apps like, Safari history and bookmarks,  Notes, text messages, email messages, photos associated with contacts, app cached data and that type of "stuff". It should. It be over 50% of your storage capacity. I have 1.53 GB of "other" on 64GB iPad Air 2 that has about 45GB of storage already taken up.
If the "other" data is that large, something is corrupting the sync. Sometimes you have to restore the iPad as new in order to bring the "other" data in control. Obviously you don't want to get rid of all of it because it is data that you need.
Read Kappy's very good User Tip about "other" and what to do about it.
What is "Other" and What Can I Do About It?

  • What is "Other" category when I sync?

On the page in iTunes where you sync, there is a capacity bar at the bottom that shows different categories. What is in the orange "other" category? Address book and calendar? My Nano has it, too, but all I have in that is audio.
It's only got 347MB in it, but theoretically, could "other" overtake everything and fill up the phone's memory?

"Other" includes data such as contact info including photos assigned to contacts, calendar events, Safari cookies/history/cache, email stored and cached locally, SMS messages, notes, and 3rd party app settings and data stored by 3rd party apps.

  • Audiobooks going into "Other" folder when syncing on 5th gen video ipod

Suddenly a bunch of audiobooks I bought recently are not syncing properly. They seem to be going into the "other" category because when I look at my iPod memory summary, the colored bar chart, I see that category (in orange) growing but Audio (blue) remains the same. The files appear to be on the iPod when I look in iTunes but when I unplug the iPod and check there I can't find the audiobooks on the device. I restored twice, and then started getting the -48 error message. It seems as though iTunes is somehow misallocating the files and making them invisible. Any ideas how to fix this?

When you connect the iPod to any kind of powersource, or anytime you turn it on, it has these fans inside of it that start turning and shifting into place to cool the iPod off to keep it at a temperature at which it is able to operate. Soemtimes, the hardrive clicks as it does this to rev up, which is normal, like an airplane does as it takes off. On the other hand, if it does this non-stop for an extended period of time, then you might want to get it looked at by an apple genius at an apple store.

  • HT201401 what is the other catetory when syncing the iphone to itunes

Can anyone tell me what the "other" category is when syncing the phone?
I am talking about the bar across the screen that tells you how much space each category uses.

Data such as iPhone settings, SMS/MMS/iMessages, email including attachments, contact info, calendar events, notes, Safari bookmarks/history/cache, and 3rd party app settings and data created and stored by a 3rd party app.

  • What data is in the other category when I back up my phone?

    Hello Everyone,
Like most, my iphone/16gb 4s is bursting at the seams with apps, audio and such. When I look at the categories of data on my phone via itunes and the color bar at the bottom I see photos, apps, audio, etc... I have one large category titled "other". Does anyone know what exactly that is and how can I manage it???
    Many thanks for your time!

    Hi ambropoetica,
    Welcome to the Support Communities!

Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.
    Restore using iTunes.
    Cheers,

  • Some files uploaded to "Other" category when they ...

I have just installed BT Cloud for the first time so am still learning.
I only wanted one specific folder uploaded which on my local desktop PC is a sub-folder under Documents in Windows 7.
I therefore deselected all the other categories that I did not want uploaded to The Cloud.
All the files in this folder were PDF documents and all went well with the upload except some were allocated to the "Other" folder in The Cloud storage. The rest were correctly assigned to "Documents" folder in The Cloud storage.
Why would this happen and how do I move the files that have wrongly been stored in "Other" to join the rest in "Documents" within The Cloud storage.
As I say all the files I was uploading ended in .PDF
I am able to open and display correctly the ones that have been assigned to "Other" in The Cloud.
I am rather confused and would appreciate any help.
    Thank you.

Thought it might be a one off error so deleted all the uploaded files in the cloud and emptied trash.
Removed from settings the entry for the one and only specific folder I wanted uploading to The Cloud.
Signed out and back in again and added the specific folder again in settings. Files uplaoded but again some put correctly in "Documents" and some incorrectly in "Other".
Each file download initially indicates that it is a document but it is only when the download for the file reaches 100% that it suddenly changes the category to "Other" and thus puts it in the "Other" folder.
All files are PDF and end in .PDF
I cant see any difference between the files that end up in each destination folder and no files are any bigger than 40MB.
Any help would be much appreciated.
The BT Cloud file classification is such that it only recognises files by their extension, eg. .doc, xls, jpg, ...etc.
A .pdf file has no specific classification, so BT Cloud sees it as "other", in the same way as it would see a .zip file.
The way around this, for your own file organising, would be to "Create a Collection". This would narrow down a quick search for an individual file from a large number of files, (if you have uploaded many files).
As far as I know, "Create a Collection" does'nt involve uploading masses of data, as it's just creating a folder structure from files you have uploaded.......

  • What does "other" mean when syncing my device?

i plug in my iphone 4s into my imac. there is over 2 GB labelled under Other in iTunes... how do i minimize it simply? what exactly is it? what does it mean? can somebody please let me know?

"Other" is just that. All of the data on your phone that is not listed explicitly; everything except music, videos, photos, podcasts and apps. Examples include email, text messages, mms messages and their images, app data, Siri cache, Safari cache, maps, operating system settings such as mail accounts, WiFi settings and passwords, album art, etc, etc, etc.
5 GB is a bit large, however, so you may have some data corruption also. Take a look at "More Like This" to the right of your post.

It stand for miscellaneous files such as OS X and other files that don't fit well into the other categories listed. Nothing to worry about.

  • What is stored in the other category for space?

I am showing a lot of space consumed under the other category when using iTunes.  What is consuming all this space?

    Hello ih82work
Other is comprised of Settings, Siri voices, and other system data is what is typically stored there. Also keep in mind that it may have data that may have been partially download or synced across of iTunes and potentially interrupted.

  • HT2729 what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

what does the "other" category consist of when syncing iPhone

"Other" data is real data that you put on your phone by using the built in apps. It is not music, not videos, not pictures and not App Store app data. It is "OTHER" meaning everything that does not fall into these categories. Such as:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    iMessages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
Music library database index (but not the music itself)
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 3 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Sometimes "Other" includes data corruption. If you suspect this is a possibility try connecting to iTunes and click the Restore iPhone button. First restore from backup; the Other doesn't get any smaller you can Restore again and set up as New, then add your content back separately from your backup.

Brand new iPad 2 32GB with 3G. When I hooked it up to my computer, the capacity bar had 11.4GB full in the "other" category even though i haven't synced anything yet. What does the "other" category consist of and how can I fix this?

The iPad was sealed in the box when I got it. It had the plastic screen protector wrapped all around it and when I powered it on for the first time it displayed the "connect to iTunes for setup" message displayed. The only other thing I can think of is if the person I bought it from had ordered it through Verizon on and the iPad was set up on a number on his pre-existing verizon account. My question is should I just keep using it and consider myself lucky? Since there is no way for Verizon to charge me for the usage because I never signed a contract. I realize that if it is on the account belonging to the person I bought it from, they will eventually figure this out and shut it off. But I might as well use it in the meantime right?
