How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • What is "Other" data in iTunes for my iPhone?  And why is it over a GB?

In iTunes, my iPhone reports I have 1.6GB of "Other" data. It appeared immediately after I deleted and unsubscribed from a podcast (via iTunes) which had 24 large videos, and then sync'd with my iPhone (which was running out of space).
The podcasts appeared to be removed from my iPhone, however I still had no space and I saw that now I had this 1.6GB of other stuff.
I had a look around for answers on this and the default answer given is "restore your iPhone". So I did a backup and then did a restore to that backup. I don't have an earlier backup (except one that's from last year) and I really don't want to lose my app data and settings.
The restore didn't remove the 1.6GB of data.
So the question is, am I right in assuming the 1.6GB of other data is the left over podcasts that are now corrupt somehow? Or is it something else? i.e. What constitutes "other" data?
Second, any other ideas how to get rid of that other data?
    Thank
    Boz

Other that large is corrupt data. Normally, a restore from backup fixes things.
So, I discovered something new about iTunes today. The "Restore from backup" context menu option that appears when you click your iOS device in the Devices tree on the left of iTunes, is different from the "Restore" button that you get on the Summary tab for your device.
"Restore from backup" just does an restore from backup. Whereas the Restore button does a restore and then restore from backup. Make sense? Hmm.
This distinctly different functionality is not clear to the user, indeed the advice I was given above was to "Restore from backup", which in this instance is not what is needed to clear out the "Other" data.
In summary, to fix my problem I:
    - performed a complete Backup (from iOS Device context menu)
    - performed a Restore (clicked Restore button on Summary tab)
    - after device is reset with latest iOS software, chose latest backup
My other data shrank to 0.2Gb, and as an added bonus another 1.4 GB of other space was freed up from Apps and Video, even though I can't find anything missing, so I suspect there was other non-"Other" data that was cleared out by this procedure.

  • HT1386 What is the other data in itunes window?

I have an iPod touch 4th gen. When i connect it to iTunes it says that other data is 1gb.What is it?

It includes items that do not fit into the other specific categories listed. That is why it is called "other". Some apps store items there and I think song artwork is also stored there as well as other things. If the other gets very large that usually indicates that it included corrupted files and restoring the iPod will get rid of the corrupted files.
1G is on cusp of showing that it has corrupted files. You can try restoring from backup and see if that reduces the other.

  • Syncing iPhone 6+ creates "other" data

I am using an iPhone 6+ (version 8.1.3) with the latest version of iTunes.  I recently tried to sync my iTunes library to the phone, but none of my new music transferred (the song list on the phone has the songs, but they are grayed out, implying that they did not actually transfer).  I tried syncing again, which sat for an extended period of time before I cancelled.  Now, all the iTunes material on my phone (all the previously synced music, TV shows, etc.) shows up as "Other" data within iTunes.  I have restarted both the phone and the computer.  Since all this material shows up as other (roughly 30 GB on a 64 GB phone), iTunes thinks that I am trying to add an additional 30 GB of data to the phone and the sync fails.  This is a problem that I have had with my old iPad (2nd gen) for over a year now, but it only recently happened for the first time on the phone.  The only way I could fix the problem on the iPad was restoring and setting up as a new iPad, which was time-consuming and extremely annoying (it also happened during every single sync, which basically means I don't try to add new stuff to my iPad anymore).  Is there a better way to fix the error?  Thanks in advance.

O.K. I may have fixed it (time will tell).
As I had previously chosen to sync with Microsoft Outlook 2010, but the trial period expired and the price to but it was far too high, so I changed to Syncing with Gmail. Therefore I wondered if Outlook may be affecting the iTunes sync even though it was not current chosen in iTunes contact sync option. So, I un-installed Microsoft Office 2010 and re-booted the PC. Now, pressing the 'Rest Sync History' button in iTunes no longer created new contacts in Gmail.
However, this did not completely solve the problem. With 0 contacts on the phone, and 0 contacts in Gmail, syncing the phone still re-created 41 of the previous contacts. Thew only way I could get rid of these 41 contacts was to deleted them one at a time from the iPhone itself. Doing it from Gmail, or un-checking the iTunes 'sync contacts' option to delete all contacts from the phone at once, did not work; the contacts still kept coming back.
Funny thing though, iTunes did indicate that it would add 41 contacts when I synced the phone to the computer, but after deleting them from the phone it now warned that it would delete 41 contacts from the computer. But, these contacts were not in my Gmail, so I still don't know where they were coming from.
Either way, after many hours spent over many days, I seem to now be able to sync my phone contacts with my Gmail without it creating any more unnecessary duplicates.
I hope someone out there can tell me why this happened, and I hope my experiences with this help someone else in a similar situation.

  • After upgrading to iOS 5, my iPhone won't sync to iTunes and has 3 GB or "other" data

After none of my music would play yesteday, and I wasn't able to sync my phone, I decided to restore my phone and see if that helped. All it did, was wipe everything except for that 3 GB or "other" data that I don't understand. And now, I can't do anything because I can't sync my phone to iTunes, or get all of my info from iCloud.

I am having this same issue.

i have an iphone 4 and i have upgraded to ios 5. but after upgrading all my apps disappeared and in the summary tab in itunes it jus shows as other data..! please help

When I went to reload my phone it gave the option of restoring with icloud or itunes so i chose itunes (assuming icloud would have many more bugs). Afterwards, I had no music and 6.6g of other.
What I did was go into itunes, clicked my iphone 4, and clicked on each of the top tabs (summery, info, apps, ringtones, music, etc.) and ensured I had them all clicked onto sync/selected playlist etc.As my phone restored, the 6.6g of other dropped to .99g of other.
Unfortunately, all my songs are gone but everything else seems to be in tact. I don't think there is any way around this issue for now with the new ios 5 update when syncing either an ipad or iphone. I have an ipad 2 but am going to hold off on updating it until apple gets the bugs sorted out because, I'm sure you will agree, getting the music back to where you want it to be is a total nightmare and takes ages to not only pick the right songs and artists to put on it, but also the ones that will fit correctly with the space, depending on the size you have.
    I hope that helps.

No. If you made your backup to iCloud, iTunes will not restore from an iCloud backup. See:

  • I restored my ipod and i now have 35.66GB of other data on my ipod and it only sinked my music that i bought on itunes how do i fix this?

I restored my ipod and i now have 35.66GB of other data on my ipod and it only sinked my music that i bought on itunes how do i fix this? i have an ipod 5 with ios 7.1.2. ive tried restarting my computer restarting my ipod and restoring it. i also tried to delete apps nothing works.

This happened to me with the same device. I wouldn't worry about having it just say other as that is just information, if you really need to know what is using the most of your device's storage to to Settings > General > Usage > Manage Storage and that will tell you what apps are using in terms of your storage. Besides that, "other" is just iTunes knowing that there is information, how much there is, just not what it is. So syncing your device a few times and letting it stay plugged in should allow iTunes to recognize what information is on your iPod. Hope I could help!

    Hi,
On my macbook pro, I have connected it with my Iphone 4, on the summary it says that I have 3.5 GB of 'other' data, which is bigger than my photos and music. How do I make this smaller without losing all of my data in a restoration. I do not kno what the difference is between a normal restoration and a restoration form back up. Also i have already tried deleting old messsages and book marks but nothing is working. I searched on the internet and it said something about it being corrupted!!
    Please Help!!!!!!
    Thankyou!!!

  • 15GB of 'other' data on iPhone even after iTunes factory restore...

    Hi,
Does anybody have a solid idea how to reduce the 'other' data on the iphone?
I have just under 15gb of 'other' data on my phone which I think could explain the slow operation when using it.
I've done a factory restore and it reduced the 'other' by 0.3gb. Not really worth the waiting around.
    Any advice is most welcomed.
    Thanks,
    Chris

If it is any condolances, i have similar issues, The only thing that worked was factory reset...and start fresh from the beginning.... If you are lucky enough to get rid if the "garbage" aka "other" memory

  • Other data suddenly appears on iphone on itunes sync.  Resolution?

A significant amount of "Other" data suddenly appeared during the last iphone sync. Pushing iphone over quota. I can"t identify the source of the data.  How do I remove it to free up space?

I thought only I had encountered the issue
To figure out what kind of data has occupied so much space, tap Settings > General > Usage. If it shows apps, songs and videos that occupy too much space, then you should delete these files manually. If not, try SafeEraser to scan your iPhone. All kind of junk files will be displayed, let you remove them directly from your iPhone.

  • Format C drive, what steps to take for retaining all data of iTunes?

    Hello
I want to format my C drive of Laptop and shift my itunes to E drive. I'm on windows 7. C drive is having itunes and in that I have synced my 2 iphones and 1 ipad.
Now I want to format the C drive and want to retain all the data, backup, media etc of my synced data with the itunes.
What I've done is that I transferred my music location from C to E drive by using apple forum discussion. I changed destination to E drive in ADVANCED TAB in Edit-Preferences. Then orgainzed data. That was successful.
Now please help me on what to do next so that i can retain my all my data of itunes safe before formatting my C drive.
    Thanks in advance

This definitely isn't intended as a substitute for tt2's tutorial (which is comprehensive and more detailed - in case of any differences I'd follow what's stated there), but in summary you should be doing the following.  I've assumed that, as per your original post, you've changed your media location to E:\iTunes and consolidated the library.  You now have a "split library" where:
E:\iTunes contains a folder called iTunes Media which in turn contains several subfolders such as Automatically Added to iTunes, Audiobooks, Music, ...
C:\Users\your user name\Music\iTunes contains the following folders and files:
    Album Artwork (folder)
    Previous iTunes Library (folder)
    iTunes Library Extras.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library Genius.itdb (file)
    iTunes Library.itl (file)
    iTunes Library.xml (file)
I'd suggest making sure that you're running the latest version of iTunes before proceeding - by default, this will be the version that you download and install when you rebuild your PC.
Before you change anything else, exit iTunes.  Now copy all of the folders and files in C:\Users\your user name\Music\iTunes to the same folder on your external drive (E:) that contains your media folder.  You should now have this:
or something very similar.  Now restart iTunes while holding down the SHIFT key.  You will see this dialog:
Select "Choose Library ..." and navigate to the folder on your external drive with the content as described above.  Select the iTunes Library.itl file and click OK.  iTunes will load - check that everything you expect to see is there.
You now have a "portable library", i.e., all your media and the files that iTunes uses to organize them.  You can use this in conjunction with any PC running Windows and iTunes (noting limitations regarding your iTunes account and authorizations).  As tt2 suggested in his response, before you go any further:
Make a backup of your new portable library to another device.
    De-authorize your iTunes account.
Back up everything else you need to retain from the C: drive of your PC (this is beyond the scope of this forum - there's plenty of help out there on various Microsoft sites, etc.).  Just remember that once you take the plunge and reformat the C: drive anything that you haven't backed up is gone ...
Once you've reformatted the drive and reinstalled Windows, install iTunes.  As befpre, hold down the SHIFT key when you start it up and select the iTunes Library.itl file on your external drive. You can then re-authorize iTunes and be back in business ...
