"Other" data still large

Hello,
I've been reading some threads on the "Other" storage problem that people are having with their iOS devices. I have an iPhone 5 with 16Gb of space and I could get the "Other" storage down from 2.67Gb to 2.22Gb by backing up the phone to the computer, restoring the phone to its original state, and recovering the back up from the last session (which was an option after restoring).
How do I further cut down this space?
Thank you.
Eduardo

Do NOT restore from backup.  This just restores the corrupt data which is the cause of a large "other".  Restore your phone as NEW and set up from scratch not using backup at all.

  • There is 7.82 gb of "other" data on my iPhone. How can I get rid of this? It's taking up a lot of space

I plugged in my iphone today and saw that the "other" portion of my used space was at 7.82 gb! I'm not sure what this is exactly,  but how do I get rid of it or make it saller because it is hoging up a ton of the space on my phone!
Note: I have been noticing that whenever I plug in my iphone to my Mac to sync it, the "other" data gets larger, just slightly. Is that normal?

Restore from a backup will get you some 'other' back.
Still not happy, Restore in iTunes, Setup as new. Sync back personal data using iTunes Tabs

Did all these things mentioned in this article, even did a system reset including erase data and other settings. iOS is up to date, still the iPad 2 display is not rotating.
This happened first a couple of weeks before, then I did a reset and it worked. Then after 2-3 days it happened again, I updated the iOS and it worked after that. Next time it happened, I tried all possible methods, including switching to software - rotation lock on/off. The hardware when turns to off/on, shows the correct icon on the screen of the lock and unlocked state. But the rotation is not happening.

    Just check again.
If you see a lock icon in the upper right corner of the screen - then the screen orientation is locked.
Try the side switch above the volume rocker first and see if that unlocks the screen. If that doesn't do it, double tap the home button and swipe to the right and look for the lock icon all the way to the left.
If the screen is unlocked but still will not rotate, reset the iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
If the iPad screen still will not rotate - turn it over and gently tap it on the back a couple of times - but gently tap it. Make sure that the screen is protected.

  • Syncing music results in large Other data on iphone

using 8GB iphone 3G and iTunes 7.7 on mac OS 10.4.11, when i sync music to the iphone, i get 1.42 GB of music plus 3.31GB of Other. when i turn off music syncing, Other goes does to 228MB. this happens if i have all other syncing but music turned off. Any suggestions for what i can do to reduce the Other data being sync'd as part of music? Thanks.

seems to have resolved itself on the 4th sync.

  • What is "Other" data in iTunes for my iPhone?  And why is it over a GB?

In iTunes, my iPhone reports I have 1.6GB of "Other" data. It appeared immediately after I deleted and unsubscribed from a podcast (via iTunes) which had 24 large videos, and then sync'd with my iPhone (which was running out of space).
The podcasts appeared to be removed from my iPhone, however I still had no space and I saw that now I had this 1.6GB of other stuff.
I had a look around for answers on this and the default answer given is "restore your iPhone". So I did a backup and then did a restore to that backup. I don't have an earlier backup (except one that's from last year) and I really don't want to lose my app data and settings.
The restore didn't remove the 1.6GB of data.
So the question is, am I right in assuming the 1.6GB of other data is the left over podcasts that are now corrupt somehow? Or is it something else? i.e. What constitutes "other" data?
Second, any other ideas how to get rid of that other data?
    Thank

Other that large is corrupt data. Normally, a restore from backup fixes things.
So, I discovered something new about iTunes today. The "Restore from backup" context menu option that appears when you click your iOS device in the Devices tree on the left of iTunes, is different from the "Restore" button that you get on the Summary tab for your device.
"Restore from backup" just does an restore from backup. Whereas the Restore button does a restore and then restore from backup. Make sense? Hmm.
This distinctly different functionality is not clear to the user, indeed the advice I was given above was to "Restore from backup", which in this instance is not what is needed to clear out the "Other" data.
In summary, to fix my problem I:
    - performed a complete Backup (from iOS Device context menu)
    - performed a Restore (clicked Restore button on Summary tab)
    - after device is reset with latest iOS software, chose latest backup
My other data shrank to 0.2Gb, and as an added bonus another 1.4 GB of other space was freed up from Apps and Video, even though I can't find anything missing, so I suspect there was other non-"Other" data that was cleared out by this procedure.

  • My harddrive data is consumed by over 72% "Other" data.

I've looked intensively at Pondini's tips and used them to check, but nothing is clearing the "Other" data. I have no room - 87.41 out of 120.47 consumed by "Other". Macbook Air, OS X 10.7.5, 120.47 GB. The data that takes up the majority of space on my harddrive is Apps, 7.24 GB; no data store is larger than that, or even close. I have many documents, but not enough to warrent this immense amount of "Other" data. I don't use Time Machine, and I don't have any backup on this computer. I'm concerned something is wrong, at this point.

Applications -> Utilities also contains apps.
Any 3rd party application you have stored somewhere else because you dragged and dropped it from a .dmg you downloaded, is still an app.
Apps are basically directories where the name ends in .app (technically the contents of the .app named directory has to have the guts of a real applications, but Mac OS X uses a directory named .app as the convention for storing an application).
You the  Applications -> Utilities -> Terminal command:
find / -type d -iname '*.app'
to find all the .app files on your Mac
You can use a utility such as OmniDiskSweeper to find where all your storage is being used on your Mac
    <http://www.omnigroup.com/more>
    <http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7402/omnidisksweeper>
DO NOT delete files in your Home Folder -> Library tree as there are things like your iPhone backups, your email messages, your application preferences, etc...
DO NOT delete files outside your home folder, as you may end up deleting something essential to Mac OS X, and turn your Mac into an expensive “Door Stop”.
I will point out that you will find some very large files in private -> var -> vm (these are the Mac OS X virtual memory paging files and where Mac OS X stores the copy of RAM when your Mac is put to sleep).  The page files get deleted on reboot, and the sleep image is just going to be created again when you put your Mac to sleep.
If you think you have found something to delete outside your home folder, it would be best to ask first before deleting.  There are many examples of people deleting files outside their home folder, or renaming files, or changing the ownership or permissions of files, and then their Mac stops running.  Do not be one of those people.  Ask first.

  • Report Builder Wizard and Parameter Creation with values from other data source e.g. data set or views for non-IT users or Business Analysts

    Hi,
"Report Builder is a report authoring environment for business users who prefer to work in the Microsoft Office environment.
You work with one report at a time. You can modify a published report directly from a report server. You can quickly build a report by adding items from the Report Part Gallery provided by report designers from your organization." - As mentioned
    on TechNet.
I wonder how a non-technical business analyst can use Report Builder 3 to create ad-hoc reports/analysis with list of parameters based on other data sets.
Do they need to learn TSQL or how to add and link parameter in Report Builder? then How they can add parameter into a report. Not sure what i am missing from whole idea behind Report builder then?
I have SQL Server 2012 STD and Report Builder 3.0  and want to train non-technical users to create reports as per their need without asking to IT department.
Everything seems simple and working except parameters with list of values e.g. Sales year List, Sales Month List, Gender etc. etc.
So how they can configure parameters based on Other data sets?
Workaround in my mind is to create a report with most of columns and add most frequent parameters based on other data sets and then non-technical user modify that report according to their needs but that way its still restricting users to
    a set of defined reports?
I want functionality like "Excel Power view parameters" into report builder which is driven from source data and which is only available Excel 2013 onward which most of people don't have yet.
So how to use Report Builder. Any other thoughts or workaround or guide me the purpose of Report Builder, please let me know.
    Many thanks and Kind Regards,

If we want to create a parameter depend on another dataset, we can additional create or add the dataset, embedded or shared, that has a query that contains query variables. Then use the option that “Get values from a

  • TS1503 How do I clear the 'other data' on my iPhone 4S? It is using 25% of the available memory.  I do not want to have to wipe it and then reset every thing I use.  That's why I have restore.  Except restore puts the other data back on the phone.

I've come to the conclusion that Apple is no better than Microsoft.  There was a functional iTunes. I could sync music, playlists, etc; across my iPad and iPhone.  I can't now.  It now eats up storage on my devices with 'other data',  and Apple is silent on what is going on.   I currently have 2 iMacs, 2 iPads, a Macbook Pro, and an AirBook Pro.  I will stop purchasing Apple products.  It is a royal pain to fix anything.  This support page tries my patience to use.  I used to enjoy working with Apple products, simply because they functioned and where intuitive to use.  No more.  Music is impossible to sync across platforms using the same account.  Songs only, no playlists.  This is step back to the early year of systems.  No common data formats, zero portablity, and labor intensive.
Way to go Apple,  you've destroyed your reputation!

Similar issue -- this is the third time in as many months that I've had to restore my iPad. It's a iPad Mini w/ 32GB (ME277LL/A), running the latest iOS8.1.2. The "other" data starts off about 1GB and will bob around that. I was careful about games this time, seeing only a slight rise in the data. Once it started to rise, I deleted all of the game and the data on Game Center. No joy -- the data stays about the same.
Then I noticed it was really climbing -- shooting up to about 10GB and sitting there, no matter what I did: sync it: nothing. Deleting music (on the off chance it was album art or some such: nothing. Deleted all the books in iBooks: no effect -- still 10GB. Cleared the iCloud storage, cleared caches repeatedly: nothing. Reset everything: no effect. Only Restoring the iPad -- which takes forever and is a gigantic pain in the @$$ -- gets it down. This is exactly the same thing that happened the other two times -- I lose about 10GB to "other."
I now suspect, thinking on what I was doing with the device, that pulling movies from iTunes seems to be the culprit. Deleting the movies might take the movie "off the iPad", but there seems to be a corresponding jump in Other. My guess is there's some glitch dumping the information elsewhere.
It makes a 32GB iPad pretty frickin' close to useless in a remarkable amount of time. I've not had this issue until this iPad (bought last summer) with the iOS8 upgrade. I don't see this happen on the iPhone 5S with the same OS...that's why I dialed down to iTunes (when is it not smack in the middle of issues?) and Video as the culprit; I don't watch movies on the phone.
I've noticed a massive amount of posts in support and around the web on this matter...it might be time for Apple to shift it and do something about the matter. If I'm going to be restricted to surfing the web, email, and little else thanks to the Other issue, it really doesn't make sense to stick with this device. I can doo all that on my laptop, can't it?

  • How can I delete over 3GB of "other" data?

So my iPhone 5 is a 16GB (or 13.3GB I believe, thanks apple) and it says I've used 3.37GB of this mysterious "other" data.
I have been going through and reading other people's responces to similar questions, and it seems like the main conclusion is to back up my iPhone, either to iCloud or my computer, and restore it as new. I've been trying to do everything but this, because I don't want to lose the data like my contacts and notes, but I cannot back up my phone because I have used too much space to back up, and I'm not going to buy extra space just to back up my phone to delete this data. Clearly one of Apple's problems they have yet to fix, unless they are doing this to make you buy more space and they can get more money. Regardless, we all get over that flaw in their products.
Another popular responce I was getting was to go to Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies and Data and proceeding through with that. Of course, wanting to get my "other" data back down to the regular amount (under 1GB) I did clear the cookies and data, as well as cleared my history (which is right above the Clear Cookies and Data option), however I am still stuck with over 3GB of other.
In responce to almost all of these posts was something about your apps. I have three apps on my phone, and I had deleted them off my phone to try and free up space. Honestly, I don't even think I got half of a GB back from deleting the apps. I understand that my phone is now made up of photos and corrupt files. But how do these corrupt files even get created? If I can somehow stop them from being created in the future, believe me, I will do so.
I have gone and deleted my text messages and emails, since people say that the space is taken up mostly by SMS and MMS messaging, and I think that got me almost 1GB of space. I did this last night, before I plugged my phone into the computer and checked the "other" amount on iTunes. Is there an alternative to restoring my phone as new to delete this data? Can someone please tell me if there is, because I'm just getting fed up with having to constantly delete things off of my phone to open up more space.

You should be importing pictures from the camera roll to your computer on a regular basis. Even if you don't want to keep them, at the end of the import, most photo managers give you the option to delete the photos from the camera.
If you're using a PC running Windows, just plug the phone in. Open Windows Explorer. You should see the phone there, and under that, the DCIM folder where the photos are stored.
Transfer them if you want to keep them or just delete them.
There is no easy way to mass delete them on the phone itself.

  • How do I stop the "other" data from growing every time I sync my iPhone?

I recently started putting music on my iPhone 4s, and I found that every time I sync music, the "other" storage keeps growing. This only happens when I sync music. If I don't have music on my iPhone, the "other" doesn't grow. Why is this?? Does anyone know how to make this stop? I had to restore my phone as new to delete the "other" storage (I had almost 3 G on my 8 G iPhone). Because the "other" data takes up so much room, I find it difficult to add everything that I want to on my iPhone (like all of my music). Please help!

    Hello brownielox,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
For more information, take a look at:
iPhone, iPad, and iPod: Understanding capacity
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1867
Other: Everything else, such as contacts, calendars, messages, emails and their attachments, Safari Offline Reading List, settings, and other system resources.
iOS: "Not enough free space" alert when trying to sync
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts1503
    Resolution
Try disconnecting and reconnecting your device, then syncing again to solve this issue.
Orphaned files may remain on your iOS device if it is physically disconnected while syncing music, podcasts, videos, or photos. This can prevent iTunes from syncing the iOS device on subsequent sync sessions. When this happens, the Capacity indicator in iTunes may report a large amount of "Other" disk usage for the iOS device. To resolve this issue:
Turn off the music or photo sync option in iTunes for the device.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Turn the music and photo sync options for the device on again.
Click Apply again to try to sync the device to iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 5.
Turn off the automatic syncing functions for the iOS device. To do this:
Select the iOS device from the iTunes window and click the Summary tab.
Deselect "Automatically sync when this device is connected" and select the "Sync only checked songs and videos" checkbox.
Click Apply to sync the changes to the device.
Reduce the amount of data that is being synced to the device and resync the device. For example, if syncing your Music library exceeds the memory capacity of the device, choose "Selected playlists" to transfer rather than "All songs and playlists" under the Music tab in iTunes.
If the 'Not enough free space' alert appears, continue to step 6.
    Restore using iTunes.
    Have a nice day,
    Mario

Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...
Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • Time Capsule best to dedicate for backup and usb external for other data or partition TC for dual

I have lots of video and photo and have 2TB drive on my iMAC and want to use TC for backup.
    1) Since alot of video and photo, can plug in via ethernet or "cable/usb" vs. wireless to back up my main iMAC?  Otherwise very slow via wireless and perhaps better to get Seagate Go Flex or WD and go Firewire right?
    2) I do need and like to share other data shared vs. just TC to Time Machine Backup, reading this community input, can I confirm that best practice is to let TC have as much dedicated space as possible for Backup and mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC?
    Here's my use case:
    1) Time Machine tied to TC for the 2TB via wired to main machine iMAC - I only have this 1 iMAC.
    2) Like to share data with iPhone and iPAD some pictures, etc...  so do this with USB port and see data on the shared drive via iPhone and iPAD - no need to backup - just viewing - but need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
    3) Like to share and light backup for couple PC Win7 laptops just to get files back and forth or share things between family member - nothing intense - but can PC win7 laptops see the shared drive via IP setup or something like that?
Sorry for multi questions - my first iMAC so still stumbling around to see what works best for me.

If I understand your question, depending on the signal strength, backing up over Wi-Fi can be rather slow.  An Ethernet connection would be much faster, particularly for the first backup, which will the the largest.  Backing up to a locally-connected disk will be faster still.
    2) I do need and like to share other data shared vs. just TC to Time Machine Backup, reading this community input, can I confirm that best practice is to let TC have as much dedicated space as possible for Backup and mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC?
I'm not sure what you mean by "mix partition to do 500GB per say for data on the TC".  It's not recommended to share the same volume for Time Machine output and other things.
need wireless - how does iPhone and iPAD detect this device - do I need app or something to view shared drive stuff?
If you mean that you need wireless to give an iPhone or iPad access to the Internet, a Time Capsule would do that.  If you want to give those devices access to content on a Time Capsule, that's still an immature technology, although things may improve with iOS 5 or updates beyond that.
    3) Like to share and light backup for couple PC Win7 laptops just to get files back and forth or share things between family member - nothing intense - but can PC win7 laptops see the shared drive via IP setup or something like that?
A WIn7 computer will be able to see files on the drive(s) of a Time Capsule.  I haven't tried that, but instructions are available.

  • I have 10GB of Other Data. How can I restore my phone without losing all of my data?

I have 10GB of Other Data on my phone.  If I restore from backup, all of the Other data is still there.  Do I understand correctly, that I can restore to factory settings and then load all of my apps, music, etc back onto my phone from my computer?  If so, how do I do that?  What data will I lose by doing this?
    Thank you!

If restoring from a backup still shows the "Other" data, it's likely contained as a part of the backup. You can restore the device and resync that data (apps, music, etc) back to the device. The things to pay attention to would be things like contacts, calendars, and notes -> would want to make sure those were synced with an account of some sort, or saved elsewhere to transfer back to the device. Also, items like messages can't be synchronized back over to the device, unless it's from a backup.

  • How to get rid of 'other' data in capacity?

In april, i got my iphone 4 replaced because of a broken lock button. When i brought the replacement home, i noticed that when i plugged it in there was a lot of "other" data in the capacity bar, and there was nothing on my phone at the time. Now, the other data is still there and it takes up more than half of my storage, and i have no more storage left for pictures or music or apps. I think the other data is a result of a corrupted backup, because my backups do not work (once i figured that out i stopped using them). But now i need to find a way to get the other data off of my phone while keeping all of my photos and contacts without a backup, which means restoring it isnt an option until i find some way to back up my photos and contacts individually. I need to do this because if i backup everything on my phone on itunes, the "Other" will too be backed up, and then i'd be in the same place. can someone please help me? If i call apple tech support will they be able to help? Please let me know if you have had this problem/ has it been resolved/ how it was resolved. Thank you.

You can use iCloud to backup your contacts, and you can import your photos to your computer. After restoring as *NEW*, then you can re-sync your photos; and sign back into iCloud and "Merge", to retrieve all contacts.

  • Other data on iphone 2.5 gb, genius data????

My 'other' storage has steadily grown. It's now at 2.5 gigs. It annoys me that it's days I can't account for. Under usage on my iphone the apps list never tallies up. So I am referring to other (yellow bar) when you sync in iTunes. There are do many possible causes and many suggest resetting as new phone is only true fix but I think that's very drastic. Anyway it tends to manifest itself on usb syncs with iTunes. I don't sync often but every now and then the increase in other seems to occur its not more music, vids or apps as I rarely add anything. I think the culprit could be 'syncing genius data' which seems to happen periodically. Does anytime else notice same pattern. What on earth is this genius data sync anyway. I have no idea what it's doing and how to stop it (without disrupting iTunes Match)

Thank you. Unfortunately I tried iMobie a while back, small insignificant gains. I really think restoring phone as new is draconian. I believe I have identified the culprit as syncing the phone to itunes on the computer. I don't do it often but sometimes when this happens it goes through the whole cycle of syncing genius data. I am pretty sure this is when the 'other' grows. For example last night it did it. After it finished my available space decreased by some 300 mob and I saw the other data had gone up from 2.1 gigs to 2.4 gigs. So I wanted to find out if this genius data sync can be stopped. I don't see what benefit or affect it has on my phone. And by preventing it is ther a possibility of reclaiming some of this 'other' data. I do understand other can creep up a bit what with cloud services, mails, messages etc but I am pretty certain genius sync is to blame.
My phone is 32gb so I would of been pretty stuffed if I had 16 gb version. Even so to lose this amount of data to 'other' is still pretty annoying. Having to avoid syncing to itunes in the future because of this is not sonething I want to do
    Cheers
