OTHER factors of connection speed?

I've tried this here before, but I am coming at it from a dif angle now...
My friend is Iraq. She has a G4 iBook and an iSight. She is connecting to the internet via ethernet and satellite.
Broadband speed tests show the results at 767 down and 23 up, so obviously- no video chat.
HOWEVER, others with PCs are able to audio and video chat from the same location.
I suspect that they are getting a higher upload speed. I will confirm this.
In the meantime... are there settings on the Mac in the OS that could be hindering this speed, system preferences, internet connect, firewall, etc? Is there anything I can have her check?

Hello Keri,
I've tried this here before, but I am coming at it from a dif angle now...If you need to post back, please tell us specifically what you have done so we do not repeat things that you have already tried.
If you are not certain that your iSight is working properly, you can check it using the hints in the How To Ensure Your iSight Is Functional FAQ.
If your iSight works, and if you do not have any Possible hardware or software conflicts with iSight, you do not have an iSight problem.
Your problem may be a lack of Mac OS X maintenance. Start by forcing the Chrons and doing a permissions repair if you have not done those recently.
Your info still shows that you are using Mac OS X (10.3.8). I suggest that you apply the 10.3.9 Combo Updater as explained in How I Update My Mac OS X. 10.3.9 resolves several issues with older versions of Panther.
Both of you should test with several others to see which end of the connection has the problem.
To give you the best help, we need some more information for the system that is having problems. Please post back as much as possible of the information requested in the the When do I Post a New iChat Topic ? FAQ, starting about half way down the page. Be sure to specify what application you are using to drive iSight in your video chat, too.
By my count, the list requests 20 items of information. (You may even find the problem in the process of gathering that info.)
If both of you have problems, provide the info for both systems.
We will be happy to try to provide more specific responses based on your additional info.

  • IWeb publishing to .Mac/iDisk- interruptions: does connection speed matter?

    Greetings,
I posted an earlier message somewhere in the iWeb08 forum regarding my suddenly experiencing lack of completion of publishing iWeb site to .Mac. Publishing just stops - no error message comes up. I have however noticed that my internet connection has been also varying in speed - down to a few dozen kbps in the last day, which is when I started experiencing this problem. Does connection speed affect such publishing? in other words, if connection speed goes down tremendously, does publishing to .Mac sort os "times out"???
    Will appreciate input!
    - Roger T

More than likely you are seeing a cached copy of your website. Sometimes this is a local phenomenon and a simple clearing of your browser cache does the trick (Safari>Empty Cache). However sometimes your ISP is the culprit with caching at their level. This seems to be a chronic problem with ISPs in the UK for some reason. And the only thing you can do is to wait it out.
You can try adding a "?" to the end of your URL to force Safari to fetch a non-locally-cached copy of your site, but even this won't help if your ISP is overzealously caching material.
Anyone in the UK can shed light on this ISP phenomenon???

  • Issues with Infinity - Connection Speed & Other Pr...

    Hi all,
I had Infinity installed on 2nd November.  Besides some issues with BT mixing up delivery addresses the installation by Kelly Comms went smoothly, and was setup within 45 mins.
Initial speeds were very good, achieving 74Mb/s Down & 18Mb/s Up with a Ping/Latency of 5ms  Excellent really considering the sub 5Mb/s I was used to with ADSL.  The high connection speeds remained over the weekend until about 4pm on November 5th.  I found that the Openreach Modem had lost connection (flashing DSL light) and my HH3 Broadband light was a steady orange.  I left this for a while before picking up my landline to call customer services only to find that my line was dead with no dial tone.
Broadband eventually came back on service later that afternoon, but at a much lower speed of 43Mb/s Down, and an almost impossibly slow 0.97Mb/s Up.  Ping/Latency has also slowed to around 20ms.  During the evening I managed to get through to customer services in India, who were able to start dealing with the fault on my phone line.
Initially I was told it would be the 12th of November that the problem with the phone line would be resolved.  Fortunately enough it was then fixed the following morning by an apparent engineer visit.  I was unaware of this action until later in the day, but had noticed before leaving for work that Broadband was yet again down.
So to cut a long story short: I have a phone line that works, but a big reduction in connectivity speed especially upstream speed.  Should I be contacting BT to investigate yet another potential problem bearing in mind that I am still within the supposed '10 day training' window.
(All speed tests have been conducted via a PC connected by ethernet directly to the HH3)
If anyone can advise me it would be much appreciated.

  • Minimum Connection Speed & A few other Questions.

Living in rural Vermont this is of concern, is there a minimum connection speed for the CC versions?
If one has no internet access during the 23-33rd days but returns on day 35 what happens?
Can the check-in occur on Day 21 instead?
Finally, I saw mention made of CS7 and CS8. Are these in the planning stage? If the CC versions are simply a conveince for those who want this service and the regular updates are coming I would be very much happier.
    Thanks!

    Hi there,
There is no minimum connect speed requirement for the Creative Cloud membership or using CC products.
The two things for which you would need an Internet connection are -
    1. downloading the creative cloud products that you would like to install & use
    2. licensing & activating the products by signing in with your CC membership ID
for #1, Adobe has implemented a lot of improvements to be able to resume downloads of CC products post a network failure or outage.
for #2, a minimal Internet bandwidth is required
So, as long as your connection allows you to accomplish the above, you are all good.
    >> If one has no internet access during the 23-33rd days but returns on day 35 what happens? Can the check-in occur on Day 21 instead?
If your CC membership is active, you will be able to resume working on the software after hitting 'Try Again' in the 'Renew your subscription' prompt that you will see in the software on the 35th day. We are working on certain enhancements that will provide flexibility vs. the monthly subscription check-ins.
    >> Finally, I saw mention made of CS7 and CS8. Are these in the planning stage? If the CC versions are simply a conveince for those who want this service and the regular updates are coming I would be very much happier.

  • GPRS/Edge/3G connection speed?

    Hi,
i was using my "vodafone mobile" internet for few weeks now and all that time i was thinking: why it's so slow? Ok, I realize that speed depends on signal strength and things, but signal quality is 110% here and I get only 4.4kBps (only GPRS available). I know that GPRS should give me something around 10kBps. I've found some information on google about this, people use setserial to set port speed, but then i try it i get an error:
    # setserial /dev/ttyUSB0 spd_warp
Cannot get serial info: Invalid argument
    Why is this happening?
    I'm running a custom kernel (2.6.21.1)
    Thanks for your answers.
    Cheers,
    PsD

One of the factors you have no influence on is the amount of users that are trying to use the same connection.
I've seen download speeds ranging from .5 kbytes to 7 kbytes on gprs, while connection speed was 57600 baud.
Yes, I know these and understand that speed vary a lot. But I'm worried about maximum speed that I get - 4.2-4.4kBps.

  • Connect Speed VS Download Speed

I have purchased a WRT150n and WPC300N card. I am getting good connect speed (between 120Mbps and 270Mbps) but my download speed varies tremendously. Anywhere from 50Kbps to 4Mbps depending on how far I am from the router and other factors, I am sure. What is confusing me is when my connect speed is 270 Mbps but my download speed is only 50Kbps. I also borrowed a WRT300n from a friend and see somewhat better signal strength but not much better download speed. What is the reason for the huge drop off? Thanks

The difference is radio frequency noise, that is, interference from other 2.4 GHz devices.   Although your connection is 270 Mbps, radio frequency noise is dropping your data throughput rate.  This is a common problem.
Also, note that there is some "overhead" when sending data wirelessly.  For example the maximum data throughput of a 54 Mbps wireless g connection is about 20 to 24 Mbps (= about 2 to 2.4 MBps), or about 40% of the connection speed.
Also, note that your data throughput is likely measured in KBps (Kilobytes per second), not Kbps (kilobits per second).   For example, Windows reports KBps.  Due to protocol overhead, it takes about 10 bits of connection speed to send one byte of data.  Thus a wired 270 Mbps connection could send a maximum of about 27 MBps of data, while a wireless connection is likely to max out at about 8-12 MBps.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • Wireless connection speed fluctuating:  please help if you can.

    Hi there,
I have a problem with wireless Internet connection speed which spinning my head off, I desperately need other people advice please.
My AirPort Express (AirTunes) serves the flat with Internet, two pc’s and an iMac (Intel Chip). The first pc is a sony laptop that has the Centrino platform (i.e. Wireless ready) and the other pc has an internal D-Link Air DWL-510 wireless PCI (IEEE 802.11b)
The laptop seems to get the maximum speed of the internet connection anytime anywhere in the flat, the iMac gets 70% of the connection speed. While the PC with DWL-510 gets only 30 – 40% of the connection speed only. However, sometimes all the sudden, both the iMac & the PC will get the maximum speed as it should! On a random bases.
I am puzzled trying to establish why is that happening? what could it possibly be that is curbing the connection speed to start with? And what changes that sometimes the pc will get the full connection speed? I have a wireless phone at home, I have a wireless temperature controller as well, and there are wooden walls dividing the rooms in between. I tried switching the wireless devices on and off but the results produced had no affect. My AirPort Express is password protected, so (most likely) no one is steeling my bandwidth. So, what else am missing? What other factors that causing this fluctuation in my internet connection!!?? Please advice if you can think of anything?
    Many thanks.
    iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.4)   iMac 17' 1.8 MHz PowerPC 1.25 mb RAM

hello Satchmo.. thanks a lot for your reply.
In regards to the first point (ISP connection), I agree. When I tried to test the line some time ago (on a wired link) I noticed the fluctuation, but it was acceptable. The problem I have now is that the 2mb connection I have, this particular pc receives only 600kb (+/- 10% variable), where is the other 1.4mb going? Sometimes, all the sudden I notice my connection go mad and I get the full speed for a while! I don't know what has changed from the surroundings.
The other things you mentioned (source of influence i.e. other wireless networks that might be crossing mine, bluetooth devices and Ethernet port is used while the wireless is in use) all are viable possibilities. I’ll start testing to check if any of ‘em is the case. Especially other wireless networks, cause its seems that my wireless card discovers at least other two connections along side to mine. I guess if it was the case, nothing much I’ll be able to do about it.
Also thnx for the link.. I don’t understand why I failed to find it when I searched the net!!

  • EA2700 Connection Speed Low ( 72.2mbps )

Hi guys , this is my first post , if i do something wrong already apologize , I'm from Brazil , but I found no competent forum to remedy my doubt , so I came up here
I bought a linksys router EA2700 and after many different attempts to configure it, could not get the wireless connection speed exceeds 72.2mbps .
The speed is well lowers the specified in the manufacturer's website, which disappointed me with the device.
I wonder if anyone has gone through this , I hope a connection speed of at least 150 mbps
The updated firmware this latest version available on the site .
I hope someone can help me, thanks

3-6' feet minimum safe distance between devices.
Placement on main level floor and central in the building and WELL ventilated is preferred. Not in basements or closets as building materials, or near by electronics devices could interfere or hinder good signal propagation.

  • Ichat Connection Speeds

Little Problem, ill try and make it simple. Live and play hockey in Germany, and parents wants to watch the games back in canada, but they are not available. With Ichat I tried allowing sharing my screen with them but the connections speeds are too low and read max 40-50 kbps which isnt enough to support the feed. Anyway that I can boost that up to 500-1000 so the video stream is clean? Might be a stupid question, but i've searched everything and can't figure it out. Thanks

    Hi,
For a Video chat you need at least 100kbps for a one way chat.
That is you have to have a usable speed of 100kbps.
If you have a 128kbps Upload Speed you get about 80% of that reported in Speed test sites which comes down to 104kbps (in round numbers).
Some of other hardware you have will also play a part, such as the Processor and how busy that or the Graphics card may be.
I presume you are watching or playing back the Video of the games and then Sharing the Screen to show that.
This might be an option if the Game is a live TV feed to your computer.
(I initially thought you were doing it from the game and couldn't see why you were doing it by Screen Share)
Technically Screen Share is a picture of much less quality and does not require the same sort of Bandwidth/Internet Connection Speed.
The 10.5.x (iChat 4.x) specs are here and are essentially the same for iChat 5 (Snow Leopard 10.6.x)
If it is a recording that plays back in Quicktime Player I would think of using the iChat Theatre option.
There are drawbacks to this as the ration stays at 4:3 and your recording may well be in 16:9 and iChat will cut off the edges which may be unhelpful for a game like hockey.
The controlling factor in this is the Upload speed you have as iChat will work on this and not the Download speed if it is different (it is usually much higher).

  • Airport Security  settings...connection speeds?

My iMac is connect via ethernet, IBM notebook via Airport Extreme Base. I can go as low as 40 Bit WEP to as high as WPA2 Personal. While the WPA2 Personal gives the higest security does it give slower connection speeds? All our neighbors (Residential neighborhood) have securred networks. (5 in range) My wife uses the notebook primarily for AOL/Mail. We never transmit any personal/financial data over the notebook computer. Just curious about the speed factor! Thanks, Bill

WEP is an older technology. You should use WPA2 as it's most compatible. Connection speeds should not be affected by the encryption.

  • Connection Speed reading for external USB Modem ????

In previous versions of the Mac OS, I've been able to see a readout of my connection speed achieved with a dial-up modem and telephone line (e.g. 28 kbps, 33 kbps, 50 kbps etc etc) but under this latest 10.5 Version of OS X I can't see this speed in the networking software that controls my Apple USB modem.
Has this feature been dropped with 10.5 ?
If not, how do I see the speed. It would be very helpful to see it as I sometimes travel to some pretty remote areas where phone lines are poor - so if you know the actual connect speed you have a good idea of what sort of size of downloads to attempt and not to attempt while on-line.
I can see such parameters as my time connected and IP address assigned by the ISP, but no connect speed.

I realize the speed that used to be shown was the initial speed the two modems involved, mine and the ISP's, negotiated to establish the connection and I also realize that is not the actual download speed.
But it's still helpful to know that initial speed because it is a rough indicator of line quality ands gives one an idea of how rapidly he will be able to communicate - clearly there will be a significant difference for the better in performance for the online session if one can achieve a connect speed of, say 50k, as opposewd to 28k or less on a poorer line.

  • Problems with the Fios 20/5 connection speed in my area dropping down to less than 3mbs.

I have written out a flyer that I plan to go door to door with. Since I am under contract with Verizon, I am forced to honor my side of the contract. Even if they are allowed to make me pay for a service that I am not completely getting. I am very displeased and as soon as my contract is up, I will change back to My local cable companies all in one that does not require a contract and has no issue such as the one I am having.
Do you have Verizon Fios Internet?
Are you on the 20/5 connection?
If so, you may not be getting the speed you are paying for. I am on a 20/5 connection and when my computer is on for longer than an hour the internet download speed with Verizon Fios starts to slow down until it is below 3mbs. It takes about 24 hours to get down to 3mbs but only about an hour or two to get down to about 6-7mbs when I am paying for 20mbs…
I have 3 computers in my home that have Windows Vista, Windows XP home edition and Windows Media Edition 2005. All of the computers run into this same exact issue, I have tried every setting I could think of with my 24 years of computer technical experience. I finally took one machine with Windows XP and ran a full format on the hard drive and reinstalled a fresh Windows Xp Operating system onto the hard drive so it is a bare bones OS. This way there is no other software on the machine that could possibly be causing the problem and found that when I connected online through Verizon Fios the machine still ran into the same exact issue. This proves to me that the issue is not on any of my machines.
Now all of this time my buddy that lives 1.2 miles away from my house has been having the same issue with three computers at his home also. He has Windows Vista on two machines and Windows XP Pro on one.
When I concluded that it was a Verizon Fios issue, after a few months of trying to get by, researching, diagnosing and losing much information in order to verify it was on Verizon’s side, I contacted technical support at Verizon’s online website. The agent and I went through the regular procedure that anyone would have to go through and I patiently explained what I had done to try to diagnose the issue. The agent came to the conclusion that he could not figure out the problem so he guessed that the Verizon router/modem may be the issue and told me he would send me a new one by mail.
I received the new Verizon router/modem, installed it and had to call to have it activated. Afterward it still had the same exact issue as the prior router/modem. So now we know it’s not my computers, it’s not the router/modem. My Verizon router/modem is connected right at the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), which is the box that connects the fiber-optics to your home, usually just inside or outside your garage wall. Mine is just outside…
From here my buddy, who has been having this problem also the entire time, called the local office of Verizon Fios and an installer was setup to come over to his home and trouble shoot the issue. My buddy called me and told me when the installer was headed to his home and I met him at his home to see what the installer found and in hope that my issue would be fixed at the same time. The installer went through the system at his house and was frustrated about not finding the reason for the issue and ready to leave without fixing anything. I simply asked that he stay long enough to see the issue present itself within an hour-hour and a half.
His laptop itself already showed the speed drop from 20mbs to between 16-17mbs, it was on its way down. He basically told us something that online tech support already stated to me, it is extremely difficult to prove it is on Verizon’s side. In other words it is extremely difficult to prove it, in a way that will convince Verizon to check its own servers, routers and software updates to their own systems. The installer, good guy, couldn’t/wouldn’t stay but we did convince him not to simply drop the issue. He called shop and they sent another installer out to take over the issue.
The new installer, great guy, got up to speed on what was already done at my buddies home. The first installer, checked and replaced the Verizon router/modem, checked the wiring and splitters. Basically went through the entire system up to the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), the box that connects the fiber-optics to your home. He pulled and replaced the Optical Network Terminal (ONT), thinking that perhaps the unit was compromised. While he was doing this job a tech was called and asked to stop by for assistance with the issue. The tech checked the computers inside and tried to do some settings that the main office informed him to try. I explained to the tech that the same issue was happening at my house, that I went through every setting I could think of and find online to help alleviate the issue. After some shop talk about what I had tried, including the full format and reinstall of the operating system on one of my machines, he just as I came to the conclusion that it couldn’t be with the computers and since everything that had to do with the Verizon Fios system from the street to the end-user computer had been checked, verified and/or replaced, the issue had to be coming from Verizon’s main office.
The installer had already checked the main at the road that has the 3x2 green service cover on it by the side walk. Everything was in good working order. The tech called the main office to see if my buddy and I were on the same hub, basically a big splitter that continues the service from the main office to the homes, we were not. So that was ruled out…
My understanding of the system ends there. The only other components I know of are the Main branch’s routers, servers and software.
Verizon had a new connection speed added to their system, 25/15 about the same time our issue began. So I am guessing that when they updated the system to include this new connection speed they corrupted the software for the 20/5 connection.
We have been waiting to hear from the tech that was at my buddy’s house, to see if the issue will be dealt with. My buddy has called him a couple of times and he has mentioned that he is trying to get it addressed and to call back if we hadn’t heard from him. He remembered who he and I were and what the issue was, so I believe he is taking it seriously. How far he can move the issue is beyond me…
I want to add that my buddy and I have been customers with the all in one package from Verizon Fios since their services have moved into our area, about a year and a half… It has only been since about June that this issue has presented itself, before then we were on 7th heaven with the speeds. We couldn’t have been more than happy with the services.
This issue has caused that to all go afoul, not only do the speeds get down to less than 3mbs but the speed is not smooth at all. Rather the 3mbs speed is stop and go, freezing in between at times, very choppy. Barely usable at times, unless you restart the computers and start over.
We are hoping that anyone with Verizon Fios Internet Services will keep an eye on their speeds by going to http://speedtest.net and doing tests to verify they are getting the speeds they are paying Verizon for.
This is what it will take for Verizon to take this issue seriously is to gather everyone on the system that may be having the same issue. I believe it is everyone that is within the 1.2 miles from my house to my buddy’s and will distribute flyers to each and every house in between.
If you find that your speed is not as fast as it should be please contact me and I will add you to the list, this way we can see exactly how far this problem covers and perhaps it will also help to show a pattern and understanding as to why the issue is present in the first place.
    My contact information,
I have left this out here, you can contact me on these forums...

Actually what this came down to was an issue between Windows Vista and an Ethernet Card on one of the machines in each of our local networks.
Even though our two machines are 6 years apart, we both have the same ethernet adapter on our main desktops. A RealTek RTL8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet Nic. It seems that the adapter does not work at the 20mbs download speeds with Vista. For some reason the adapter does not shut down when the computer does? I don't understand why but it doesn't, it keeps the connection alive. I removed the ethernet cable and pulled the power cable and had my two other computers still connected to the network and found that the issue was resolved. The way I found out was that I used the connections on my main computer to hook up one I had laying around and through further testing found the problem no longer existed...
Then I realized that my buddy and I installed Windows Vista at about the same time, a couple of months ago. Funny how you can forget an important detail like that. Then I remembered that he had the same identical ethernet adapter as I did, I had noticed that while trouble shooting his computer at his home but didn't think it was important at the time. Until the issue was narrowed down to the adapter, then it all seemed to all fall into line.
Quite humbling... In the end, anyone who has Windows Vista and this NIC probably will have problems with the 20mbs download speed of the computers on their own networks. I tried the latest Vista driver from RealTek and also tried to roll back the driver, with no success....
Back at the beginning when we first had fios installed in our homes there wasn't an issue when we had the 10/2 speeds and had Vista. Then we decided to change from Vista to XP because we both were having issues as to what programs you could use and which you could not, shortly after having fios installed. Then when verizon upgraded us to 20/5 we were amazed at the speed and still had no issue because we had XP on our main computers with the RealTek adapters...
We reinstalled Vista because it seemed like we were having more issues with XP by getting hit with Antivirus2008 and its variants and thought it time for a change back...
It didn't really hit us that Vista could be the culprit because we both have a laptop in our networks that have had Vista on them from the get go when there were no issues... We also didn't notice just how bad it was right away and over time kind of left the Vista install out of the equation.
Just strange that one computer can effect all the other computers on the network, even when it is shut down...
I allowed the other two computers to run 24hours and the issue did not present itself, when I added the main computer with the RealTek adapter back to the mix it reappeared. The Realtek adapter is the only real common denominator between his machine and mine.
So now we have three choices,
We can go back to Windows XP.
We can buy a new NIC or a wireless card to replace the RealTek...
Hopefully this post will help anyone else who runs into this problem, it has been very frustrating to say the least...
Thanks to everyone for their help and I apologize for complaining about verizon when it was not a verizon issue. I came to the conclusion that the only part verizon really played was upgrading us to a 20/5 tier which I am thankful for...
Would be nice if this card was on a list that Verizon support could use to troubleshoot , diagnose or eliminate for future support issues.

  • Slow Internet Connection Speeds caused by Ethernet Controller Driver

Problem:  Internet connection speeds are 1/10 of available connection speed.
    1. Problem statement is based on running speed tests at cnet, speedtest.net, and AT&T.
    2. I am paying for 12 MBps down load speed but I only get about 1.5 MBps.
    3. Other computers in household get 11+ MBps connected to the same ethernet cable and also different ethernet cables.
    4. I traced the problem to the network controller driver.
    5. I updated to the latest driver with no change in performance.
    6. After some experimenting I found that if I re-install the driver after the computer is booted up, the internet connection down load speeds increase to 11+ MBpS (typically around 11.4 with maximum capability of 12)
I have assumed that the driver does not load properly the first time, but why?  Or is there some other cause or setting that I have overlooked?

  • My Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive does not show connection speed

    *My Concern*
Hi I have a Lacie Big Extreme Hard drive, which although works fine is not showing its connection, shows up in the system profiler as 'Connection Speed Unknown'. -Should I be worried? I have other drives connected to my G5 Dual 2 gig machine and no problem their they all show their connection speeds.
*Other Firewire 'Unknown Speed connection' related Problem*
I had a DVD LaCie Dual layer portable Firewire drive which recently suffered from the same problem and I had to send it back. This was due to it slowly developing a fault of not being able to burn dual layer disks properly.
*What I have done to try and remedy the situation.*
I have been able to do the following but I am afraid with no change in the system Profiler;-
1 Trashed the whole system and rebuild
    2 repair my permissions
3 empty out all my caches with OnyX (third party app) version 1.8.5
4 Disconnected all drives and reconnected them one by one to see if there are any anomalies within the system
5 switched my G5 off removed the plug from the wall waited 30 sec for it to reset itself this was the 1st attempt. On my 2nd attempt I then cold booted the machine and reset Pram settings
6 used Tech Tools Pro 4 version 4.1.2
    7. Replaced Power supply of the offending unit (didn't have to but I wanted to be safe and eliminate this fronm the equation.
9.tried changing around the order in the chain to which the drives were connected to the G5but alas no joy!
    Summery
So my concern is if a device which is Firewire shows up in the system profiler as connection speed unknown should I begin to worry even though it appears to be functioning.
Thank you ahead of time for any help on this matter
    *Supporting evidence*
Please see below a shot of my System profiler so you can see what I mean:-
    *(Important Note)*
The Lacie Big disk has 800/400 Firewire connection speeds I have connected it straight to my G5s firewire 800 port then daisy chained the LaCie's via its other 800 port to the two other 800 Firewire Hard drives.
When the LaCie DVD DL drive was connected, I connected it straight to the 400 firewire port. As it needed direct access to the G5 for it to function optimally.

Hi BDAqua - thanks a lot for replying - really appreciate your help. I was using Time machine to back up on the old lacie drives that I have - I just backed up on both lacies and they backed up faster for some reason but that might have been because they were very small back ups as I did full back ups on Tuesday night - this is the info under the USB section > hardware > about my mac - it didn't show the speed like the example you gave me though but it still backed none the less  :

I also got a reply back from WD on the hard drive and they said the following - exactly the same as you about it being a problem with the power supplied hence why the disk won't mount - so you were spot on - so I'm thinking I should go ahead and get the newertech 7 USB port 4 amps as you suggested - let me know what you think and then I'll just order it - and thank you - really do appreciate your help on this - thanks Jayas
    Dear Jayas
Thank you for contacting Western Digital Customer Service and Support. My name is James.
If the drive is working fine on one system but failing on another especially with the "clicking" sound this is an issue with the system not being able to supply enough power to power the device.
These devices require power from the machine to make them operate if there isn't enough power supplied the drive will fail to work. This is why you are having no issues with one system but are on another.

  • Connection speed high but pages have been loading slowly for last 4 days.

My Broadband has performed well for the last two years but 4 days ago web pages have suddenly begun to take ages to load (10 to 15 seconds or more).
Checking my connection speed gives, typically, 7816 kbits downloaded in 1.542 sec.
The problem persists with Safari, Internet Express, Camino and Firefox.
Another problem cropped up at the same time in that a web site I use regularly suddenly became unavailable to me - but still OK for others. This also applied to Google UK until yesterday but now that is back.
    Can anyone help?
    Regards
    Chris
