"other" in capacity bar

i had a resolve to this same issue not long ago, however, didn't see the exact resolve steps...to rid of the 'other' in the capacity bar when iphone is connected, do you click restore? if so, does it back up all of the pictures on the camera that have been taken including video?

The "other" section is kind of dynamic and weird I have noticed. I recently updated to iTunes7 and then synced my 80GB iPod to it putting the whole library on it, a BUNCH of photos, a few videos and that is about it. When done it listed about 1GB of other, which wasn't real, since I don't have artwork or anything in disk mode.
But then after playing it for a day or two and resyncing it a few times, the other has now dropped to a couple hundred megabytes. So perhaps a lot of cache and temp files get stashed here during normal use and many of us notice is the FIRST time we sync a huge amount of data to the iPod because a HUGE amount of cache and temp files are written which then later shrink.
Or so my theory goes,
Patrick

  • What is "Other" in capacity bar?

    I am seeing that the "Other" items in the capacity bar of my iPhone (in iTunes) is taking up a bit of space. How do I know what the "Other" capacity consists of? I would like to free

    “Other” will take up at least 200MB's, it’s system files: the iPhone iOS, database files, contacts information, settings, SMS data, core data, pre-installed apps, etc. Normal range is 200MB's ~ 500MB's or so.

  • How do I see what "Other" is in the capacity bar?

    Under music in my device, the capacity bar shows that Other has 4GB of space used. What does Other encompass and why is it taking up so much space. This is a 8GB Ipod Nano. Thanks!

    Other can be Album Artwork, Notes, Contacts, Firmware etc. or files that are on there if you are using the iPod as a removable storage device. If you feel that Other is being incorrectly reported then try restoring your iPod. Restoring will erase the iPod's hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation. If you want to update manually or using selected playlists choose no and it will default to manual mode and you can choose whatever setting you like: Restoring iPod to factory settings with iTunes 7

  • What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do i manage it?

    What is "other" in the capacity bar and how do I manage it?

    The "other" is mainly corrupt files and files that did not get deleted by apps one the app was done with the file. Normally the other s less than 0.25 GB.  To reduce the size of other, usually a restore to factory defaults/new iPodis required.  Sometimes restoring from backup helps a little.

  • What exactly is "other" in the AppleTV capacity bar

    Hi all,
    If I click on the AppleTV device in itunes, I notice it has the following categories in the capacity bar:
    * video
    * audio
    * photos
    * other
    * free space
    What exactly is included in the "other" category? I assume that podcasts may be in there. The reason I ask is that my "other" category seems to be growing (currently 4.56Gb out of 32.85Gb capacity, which is significant). Is there anything I can do to control the size of this?
    Many thanks in advance.

    Likely the case. You have to remember podcasts are provided by 3rd parties and by there very nature some podcasts are amateur productions or are not necessarily aimed at itunes specifically. There is a chance that some podcasts, whilst playing just fine, don't actually meet the specs from the tv prospective and as such even when completely downloaded don't properly get moved to the appropriate category.
    I've just downloaded the 'Hidden Universe' podcasts, I watched the 'other' category increase in size as more of the podcast downloaded, once complete the 'other' reset to its original value and 'video' increased appropriately.

  • What exactly is consists of the "other" category in the capacity bar at the bottom of the sync window?

    What exactly is consists of the "other" category in the capacity bar at the bottom of the sync window?

    Not actually, his statement is to not worry about what is in Other. That is opposite from iOS, if you have 8GB of other you most likely have corrupted files on your iPhone and you need to Restore to eliminate them.

  • Cleaning Out "Other" in the Capacity Bar

    I'vre here that the "Other" in the Capacity Bar in Itunes contains e-mails, calendar appointments, etc.  Is there a way to clrean this out and get some of
    the memory back?  I donm't store e-mails, but I notice that calendar appointments from last year are still in the calendar.  Any advice would be appreciated.

    iTunes 10.7, iPhone 4 iOS 6, WIN 7.

    A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
    First Try a Restore from Backup... But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup... Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

  • HT201656 In the Capacity bar, there is an OTHER category. What is in it?

    I have 1.43 GB in my capacity bar (yellow) designated as "OTHER" what is it and how do I edit what is in it to get rid of it or at least lessen the space it is taking up?

    Other is the operating system, the program that runs everything. That includes thing like thumbnails for photos and movies, music thumnails, settings and preferences etc. If it is abnormally large you can only reclaim it by restoring the device.
    Restore
    Turn off device – Hold down the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the red slider.
    Open iTunes on your computer.
    Press and hold down the Home button First then connect the cable to the computer.
    Release Home button when connect to itunes appears on device.
    iTunes will prompt a message that says, iTunes has detected an iPhone in recovery mode. Click OK.
    You will be taken to the iPhone pane. Then, click on Restore.

  • Brand new iPad 2 32GB with 3G. When I hooked it up to my computer, the capacity bar had 11.4GB full in the "other" category even though i haven't synced anything yet.

    Brand new iPad 2 32GB with 3G. When I hooked it up to my computer, the capacity bar had 11.4GB full in the "other" category even though i haven't synced anything yet. What does the "other" category consist of and how can I fix this?

    The iPad was sealed in the box when I got it. It had the plastic screen protector wrapped all around it and when I powered it on for the first time it displayed the "connect to iTunes for setup" message displayed. The only other thing I can think of is if the person I bought it from had ordered it through Verizon on and the iPad was set up on a number on his pre-existing verizon account. My question is should I just keep using it and consider myself lucky? Since there is no way for Verizon to charge me for the usage because I never signed a contract. I realize that if it is on the account belonging to the person I bought it from, they will eventually figure this out and shut it off. But I might as well use it in the meantime right?

  • Capacity Bar "Other"?

    I've looked around in the forum for other people who had similar issues, but the resolutions they found don't apply to my situation. Any help is appreciated.
    When I sync my iPod, the capacity bar shows:
    Audio: 16.70
    Other: 14.77
    Free Space: 24.40
    I don't have album artwork or disk use enabled on the iPod. There are no games, contacts, photos, videos or anything at all except audio. Why do I have an almost equal amount of audio and "other"? What is "other"?
    Thanks.

    Not really answered, but I stopped caring.

  • Capacity bar says 28 GB 'Other' after iMatch?

    iPad 1  /  iMatch
    My iPad capacity bar says 28 GB 'Other' after iMatch. 6.3 GB remaining? I just noticed this this morning. What the heck is 'Other' - Help Appreciated - IM

    You should run your iPad's battery all the way to zero and then recharge it.  It should get rid of MOST of your "Other" files.

  • Capacity bar - what does the orange 'other' represent

    When sycing my iPhone, the capacity bar on the bottom of the iTunes page shows a large amount of 'other' space being used (colored orange). What is 'other'?Photos, apps, music are other colors on the bar. I do not have anything else on my phone that would take up alot of space. Does anyone know what 'other' is?

    Thanks that helps. It's 430 MB. I figured it was contacts but I don't think I have a lot compared to most people-- only 74. Just surprised me that it would take up so much of my space. I have 70 pictures on it which only take up 40 MG so it didn't make sense to me.

    Well when all else fails do a restore!  This fixed my problem.  Still don't know why the content bar differed, but what the hey!
