Other Instruments with GB

Hi there peoples,
Im looking at getting either a powerbook or ibook and hooking my turntable + mixer to GB. Ive got a couple of questions about this setup..
Do i really need to get a powerbook? is there much difference between a beefed up ibook and a midranged powerbook?
Do i need a soundcard adapter to recieve input from mixer? or will an rca cable with a headphone jack solve be enough?
if i need a adapter are there any models recommendable (word?)?
Can u use GB as a live music program like abelton? recording isnt my only goal, i want to be able to jam live by scratching over beats and samples that i have layed down and additionally add stuff on the fly..?
Any other suggestions?

but it sounds like the pbook is the right choice for me.
If you think you're going to use a lot of software instruments, a lot of Audio tracks, or a lot of Effects, than the PowerBook might indeed be the better choice.
I would mention, though that, I use an iBook as my mobile recording machine and get decent results. I can usually get a couple dozen+ tracks recorded, however I move on to a more powerful machine for doing my mixing and effects.
I'm not entirely sure on the Memory, perhaps a PowerBook user will pop by. I know some machine work better with matched pairs of memory sticks, but I'm not sure about the PowerBook (The iBook, for instance, has only a single memory slot, so any memory pre-installed must be removed to install more. The PowerBook might come with two slots, I just don't know)
Whats the quality like when plugging directly into the line in from the mixer?
I'd think it would be good enough for what you're trying to do, and to surpass it would probably cost a couple hundred (or more) for a high quality interface
is jampack 2 good?
You'll have to hang tight for someone else, I'm not a loop user. Hopefully someone that is will slide by soon.

Instrument objects - change one and two others change with it

very confusing behavior within the LE arrange window: in song composition, Im ladying down from top to bottom various instrument only tracks.
Because by default (my copy of ) LE had 8 Audio and 8 Instrument objects, Ive had to by necessity move these around.
Now Im noticing if I change the topmost instrument object, Logic change one/two/three or other instrument objects along with it ? It must think they are the same, however, Ive got them mapped to play different sounds on the EXSP 24 (do I need a new iteration of this object for each different sound ?)

Your suggestion worked. I had tried deleting the artwork just from the albums involved and found one track, on one of the compilation albums, was still showing artwork on the ipod, but not itunes library. Deleting all the artwork off the ipod, adding it back onto the itunes library and then syncing the ipod worked.

Playing real instruments with software instruments

Hey, I've been using logic for years but have never tried playing with a real instrument until now. When i connect my guitar Logic recognizes it and changes the driver to unknown USB device, but there is no sound since built-in input isn't selected and the instrument records but i can't hear it until i switch it back. How do you play real instruments with software instruments? Should be pretty simple. Thanks.

Okay… the way Logic works is to use the same device for both Inputs & Outputs (there is a way round this, but let's not go there just now. First person to say 'Aggregate Device' gets thumped!).
So when you choose your device (usefully known as "Unknown USB Device") in Audio MIDI Setup, this means that you are no longer using your Built-in Inputs & Outputs — because that's the alternative.
Which means you won't hear anything through your speakers connected to your Mac. To hear an Output, you would have to connect your monitors/headphones/etc. to your device.
Furthermore:
_Auto Input Monitoring_
If Auto Input Monitoring is switched on, you will only hear the input signal during the actual recording—before and afterwards, you’ll hear the previously recorded audio on the track, while the sequencer is running. This helps you to judge punch in and punch out points when punch recording. If Auto Input Monitoring is switched off, you will always hear the input signal.
_To switch auto input monitoring on, do one of the following:_
• Choose +Options > Audio > Auto Input Monitoring+ from the main menu bar (or use the +Toggle Auto Input Monitoring+ key command).
• Control-click the Record button in the Transport, and turn on the +Auto Input Monitoring+ setting in the pop-up menu.

WIth LabVIEW how do I control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a RS232 to USB converter cable since I dont have rs232 ports. I have two instruments that I want to control in this manner. One is an Imada ZPS force gage with RS232 output. The other is a Panasonic HL-G103-S-J laser micrometer sensor which is RS422. I've done considerable LabVIEW programming using GPIB but I have no experience with devices like these. Any tutorial or examples would be greatly appreciated.

I understand that you want to control a device which having RS 232 port as output. If so, you can use an USB-RS232 cable from PC to device and you can control or monitor the device.

Also, first check the device in hyperterminal and then continue to program in labVIEW. You can find the serial VI's in Instrument I/O.

How to do multi-instrument with EXS instrument in Logic Express

Hello Logic Express Users,
I wonder if someone can help me. I can set up multi-instruments with Battery 2, and Kontakt 2, but I am battling to set up a multi-instrument when I am using the EXS with Logic Express. How do I assign the outputs to different outputs so that I can hear different instruments through different aux channels.
Or is it only possible with the EXS editor that comes with Logic Pro? Because if it is then it is weird why they make the EXS with Logic express a multi-instrument.

If you want to save an instrument patch together with plugins and so on, you should save it as a channel strip.
Use the channel strip menu at the top of the channel object. There is a defined directory for user channel strips, but you can create folders within it and organise your channel strip settings as you like.
These settings will show up in the channel strip menu, and the media browser too.

Reading instruments with mutiple baud rates

Hi,
I have two pressure manometers with RS-232 ports.
One of them is 2400 baud rate while the other is 9600 baud rate.
They continously spit out data on the port and there is no way to send commands to the two devices.
Since i have only one serial port, i am using a usb to serial adaptor for one of the devices.
I want to be able to read the two devices simaltaneously in a while loop, i come across the following error.
The instrument with the higher baud rate (9600) does not respond after the first read value and displays wrong information while the one with lower baud rate (2400) does respond correctly. If you change the pressure on the lower baud rate meter the higher baud rate meter begins to respond.
I suspect there is a problem with the timming ? Any ideas how i can solve this issue and get a clean stream of continous data ?

One instrument won't stop playing overtop of every other instrument?

I just bought MainStage 3, literally half an hour ago. Therefore I have absolutely no idea how to use it. I was messing around with my plug in keyboard, and somehow the program is stuck always playing a flute sound overtop of any other instrument. I have no idea how to get rid of it and I really don't want a flute permanently stuck over each instrument. Please help!

Hey, I was wondering if there is some way to make my guitar sound like other instruments, for example a string arrangement, or a violin? I remember when I was little my uncle had an effects box that did this (he could make his guitar sound exactly like a violin!) but I was wondering if there is a software avenue to do this with. If not in garage band then what other program? Thanks!

you can use a Guitar to MIDI converter.
This way you can use a Software instrument in GB instead of the sound of your guitar.
I haven't any experience with these, so don't want to recommend one or another.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

You can change the account shortname to whatever you wish to use.
As you can see from my example above. Once you click on the Create User button a new account will be created.
She will need to get her own Apple ID setup so when she starts with iTunes she can open her own iTunes account unless you both want to share the use of the same Apple ID. This can create a bit of confusion if you have your own iPads or iPhones or iPods. As you have discovered it's pretty much one iDevice with one Apple ID.
As for the iTunes library that becomes a more complicated issue.

In addition, I have gone thru all the recommended checks with universal access and have booted from snow leopard dvd and the left arrow still does not work.
I have tried using the left arrow key in all of applications I use such as: excel, ms word, address book, calendar, iphoto, terminal, & highlighting an icon and using the arrows to move to another selected icon.
Here is the kicker! In addition, I purchased a logitech solar bluetooth keyboard and the arrows work fine with my ipad but do not work when paired with the macbook pro. All other keys work fine on the macbook pro using the bluetooth keyboard.
I believe this says that the problem is not in my macbook pro keyboard. So where can it be?
Can anyone think of any other rabbit holes I can search?

I would also like to add that I've reverted the two cd drive and hard drive mods I did and the laptop is back to factory hardware and there is 0 corrosion or mold visible.

Thanks - I guess it is like there were two of me!
I bought the iPhone first and it seemed natural to link it to the (work) e-mail address which was in constant use. The iMac for home use came next and it seemed natural to use my home e-mail address, particularly as I knew by then that I would lose the work address after my imminent retirement. The same logic went for the recent puchase of the MacAir. I am not sure what happened with the iPad (also a recent purchase) - iTunes seemed to puch me towards the same ID as the iPhone.
It is not a huge problem - just makes my persona look schizoid! Otherwise very happy with everything Apple.

Two weeks ago both my wifes iPhone 4 and my iPhone 4 facetime stopped working. Others people with iPads have tried to connect with us using facetime and it all stopped. PDF addresses not longer load and display PDF in Firefox and solutions suggest to other users with problem DON'T WORK (work fine in Chrome and Safari)

This is an ongoing problem with other users. When putting a PDF in address window of Firefox and clicking go to address FIREFOX WILL NOT LOAD AND DISPLAY THE PDF. This problem has come up in questions from other users on your site. NONE OF THE SUGGESTED SOLUTIONS WORK! (trying either the Firefox PDF viewer or the Acrobat viewer as default viewer)
I am using Firefox 23.0.1 (as some of the other users with the same problem). This was not a problem in the past with Firefox. Safari and Chrome continue load and display PDFs just fine from their addresses. This is a big problem as I now have to inform people who want to view my PDFs NOT TO USE FIREFOX BUT TO USE SAFARI OR CHROME.

It appears that a link to a PDF on an internet page will not download in Firefox either!

and tried to download the PDF link at the bottom of the page (Download: PDF 11.3 MB) It didn't work! Nothing happens. Tried it in Safari and it worked flawlessly.
I have a PDF file of my work in the public_html folder on my URL. I give the address generated by that file to people who want to view my work---this works perfectly in Safari and Chrome. As to your other question, can't bookmark it if I can't get to it in Firefox.
