"Other" is taking up 9 GB on my iPhone

Okay so today I went to sync my phone since yesterday I bought new songs on my computer. Then I realized I had 3 videos (a movie and 2 TV shows) that I didn't need on my phone so I went to take them off. They refused to stop being synced onto my phone and even though now they show on the phone that they're not there on that stupid "On this iPhone" thing on my computer it says they are and are taking up more than 2 GB on the phone. Then I go to make sure the music is there and it shows that there's only about 700 of my 1200 songs! I go to sync them but my computer says that there's not enough space and I need about 900 MB more to sync. That is because not only are my videos taking up 2GB the stupid "Other" is taking up 9 GB! I have looked on the site to see if there's a solution to this but everyone seems to say that restoring will solve everything. But I don't want to restore if I don't have to. Is there any other solution? I have looked up others and some say to delete your call logs and stuff like that but even though I did it did nothing since there were barely any calls. What should I do?

" Is there any other solution? "
No.
"What should I do?"
Restore

I have very little space left on the hard drive on my macbook, on my storage report it says "other" is taking up more than two thirds of the space on the hardrive. How can I identify what these files are?

    Hello,
There is free software you can download that gives you a graphical image of what files are used on your hard drive. http://www.derlien.com/
This may help you clean down your hard drive for more space.

  • My 4 gb ipod Nano is full yet there are only 20 songs on it. In summary, it just says "other" is taking up the space. Was fine one day and the next I got this. Help?

Have had problems since downloading iTunes 10. First it moved all my iTunes music files to another location. Next, I lost all my songs on my iPod. I went to replace the music to the iPod that I'd lost, but it only allows me to add about 20 songs (on a 4gb Nano) then says disk is full. In the Summary on the iPod, "other" is taking up all the remaining space. I have no videos, pictures, or anything else on the iPod. How do I free up that "used" space? Please help? And Thanks!

  • Other is taking a lot of my drive, help! I need to restore my iTunes

So I got a message to delete some files because my memmory was low, when I came here to check I had 200 mb left; I had 104 gb from itunes and other was taking 105 gb, this picture was from today after I removed itunes, other is still huge and now I dont even have enough space to bring my itunes library back, what are my options?! I'm using TM back ups and another external back up . Thanks guys.

Well, other is all your personal data. So you'll need to go through that and delete a lot. Also, if you're using a laptop local snapshots may be taking up space in backups.
If you run TM you don't really need local snapshots so if you need the disk space you can disable them in Terminal with this command...
    sudo tmutil disablelocal
To undo this, rerun it with "enablelocal" instead of "disablelocal".
Most folks using a small flash drive will keep only the system on that drive and use another larger drive for everything else. It sounds like you need another disk.. but what type Mac are you on?

Hi, how do I manage storage? Disk Utility says “other” is taking up most of my storage but I don’t know where to find “other".  Please help!

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the Storage display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
If you have more than one user account, make sure you're logged in as an administrator. The administrator account is the one that was created automatically when you first set up the computer.
Install the app you downloaded in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper 2>&-
    sudo /Applications/GrandPerspective.app/Contents/MacOS/GrandPerspective 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator. Ignore any other messages that appear in the Terminal window.
The application window will open, eventually showing all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • Just downloaded iOS 6 and in itunes it's telling me that "other" is taking up 8GB! Help, it's using all my storage!!

I'm not sure what to do? The "other" is taking up almost all of my storage!!!

I saw that too right after the upgrade. I then connected the iphone to my MBP then did a sync and saw the Other go down to 1.5. What I noticed was that there was not an Orange bar for photos and the Other was huge but once I synced with the cable connected, it went back to normal. Hope that helps!

Where did you get the phone? FaceTime is banned in some countries in the Middle East. What had you done before it disappeared; did you possibly reset or restore the phone?
If the above is not the issue, if you use Search by dragging down your finger from the center of the screen and you search for "Facetime" does it appear as an app? If it does, then you must have moved it into a folder or another page of the Home screen. If it is in a folder the folder name will be displayed.

  • Cannot sync, not enough free space. 'other'is taking up too much space.

cannot sync, not enough free space. 'other'is taking up too much space.  i have no 'other' things on my phone and have never had this problem before. I believe this may have come from upgrading to ios5.

Connect to iTunes, then click the Restore button. When asked, choose to set up as a new phone. After it finishes, right click on the name of the iPhone in the list on the left side of the iTunes window and choose Restore from Backup. Do this BEFORE you sync and after restoring.

  • Why does "other" take up so much space on my iPhone?

I got an iPhone 5s 16 GB at the end of June 2014.  I keep running out of memory and when I recently plugged my phone into iTunes, I noticed that "other" is taking up around 3 GB of space. I know the usual delete pictures and browsing history spiel, and I've done it all. People also say that Settings>General>Usage>Manage Storage is a good way to tell what is taking up space, but I went there and manually added all of the numbers and they only add up to 8.6 GB vs the 11.6 that my phone says is occupied, leaving an extra 3 GB unaccounted for and confirming my suspicions that "other" is not included in this. People keep telling me it's the operating system but isn't that already taken out of the original 16 GB and why you really only have 12 GB of storage to begin with? As I was looking through different forums and discussions, people kept saying to restore the iPhone from the iTunes backup and I am wondering if that would actually work...does anyone have experience with this? (Also would this delete my apps and music as well? I'm not very familiar with the restore from backup and could not really find any good information on it.) Do I just have to live with "other" eating up this much space on my phone? I've had iPods and I have an iPad, and I've never had this problem. Any help at all would be very appreciated, as this is very frustrating. Thanks.

  • HT4623 how do i find out what is taking up the most stoarge on iphone 4?

how do i find out what is taking up the most storage on iphone 4?

    Hi,
Actually the real space it needs for download and upgrade it's a bit bigger, few more than 4Gb. Make sure you sync with iTunes so you don't loose anything. Moreover, you can safely delete any app because you can download it later on as it is linked to your Apple ID.
    Hope that helps.
