"Other" is taking up all my memory

Every mac that I go on, doesnt have as much "Other" used up on the computer as my MacBook Pro, Im not sure why, but it keeps building up and takes all of my memory. Here is a picture of it: http://puu.sh/1RuBr
PLEASE HELP ME! I have tryed OmniDisksweeper, and that did not work, I have looked into the console, and searched through terminal and found nothing. I have recently deleted about 100GB of items on my laptop in order to make room so I can put on the new iOS (havent bought it yet), but this is just rediculas, I need help with my problem.
My current software is: Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 (11G63)
Thankyou for your concideration,
Nelson95

ODS can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
Back up all data now.
Install ODS in the Applications folder as usual.
Triple-click the line of text below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):sudo /Applications/OmniDiskSweeper.app/Contents/MacOS/OmniDiskSweeper
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste (command-V) into the Terminal window. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything while running ODS as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means.
When you're done with ODS, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • What is taking up all my memory?

My computer keeps maxing out of memory. Is there an easy way to find out what is taking up all the memory without hitting the command + i keys for each program or purchasing such a program?
    Thanks.

    Thanks.
Cmd-I does not show memory. I think you are confusing memory with HD usage.
Memory is RAM. HD space is a completely different animal, having nothing to do with memory.
When you say your computer is maxing out of memory, exactly what to you mean? RAM or HD space

  • ITunes is taking up all my memory when I sync my iPhone

I backed up my iPhone because I am having issues with iOS 5.1. It seems like many have the same issues regarding the upgrade.
Anyways, unfortunately, my pc is short on memory, and it seems like iTunes is taking up all the little memory as I try to restore from my back up. I tried freeing up my hard drive, but whatever I free up is gets all taken by iTunes as I repeatedly try backing up. Is there a way to free up all that has been taken away by iTunes? I know I can remove the backup I did, but I don't think that is the issue here.
I hope somebody understands what I am going through and help me restore my phone from backup.
I have already tried  to look for my backup in my computer to copy/transfer to my external hard drive, but couldn't find it.
    Please let me know.. Thx!

Well, start by highlighting everything in Macintosh HD.
Then on the keyboard hit Command + i, or just right click on a folder / sidebar, and click Get Info, 1 by 1, or all at once. Your choice.
This will bring up the Get Info, telling you the size of the individual folders.
You can then move into the biggest one & narrow it down even more.

  • How do I stop Safari taking up ALL active memory?

When Safari is closed, I have about 530 MB free system memory.  I open Safari, and over the next 5 minutes it takes over all free memory, until I have about 40 MB free and 490 active.  This means that all other programs crawl and freeze, and Safari constantly hangs.  Force-quitting and emptying the cache at least once a day makes better, but only a little bit.
But how do I stop Safari doing this??

    Hi Gibby,
How much free space is on the HD, where has all the space gone?
OmniDiskSweeper is likely the easiest/best, and is now free...

And if needed, you can use Terminal to run it in admin mode to see files/folders your user can't see...

  • "Other" section taking up all memory.

Okay, so a day or two ago, a message came up saying my disk space was almost full, so I deleted all the stuff that I could. Then, it came up again. I found out how to see what category of stuff (Photos, Applications, etc...) is taking up the most space. Well, this is what I found...
This is ridiculous! I know I don't have 87gb worth of stuff downloaded. Does someone know how to fix this?

For information about the Other category in the Storage display, see this support article. If the display seems to be inaccurate, try rebuilding the Spotlight index.
Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
              iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
Do the same in other applications, such as Aperture, that have an internal Trash feature. Then restart the computer. That will temporarily free up some space.
According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation—not the mythical 10%, 15%, or any other percentage. You also need enough space left over to allow for growth of the data. There is little or no performance advantage to having more available space than the minimum Apple recommends. Available storage space that you'll never use is wasted space.
When Time Machine backs up a portable Mac, some of the free space will be used to make local snapshots, which are backup copies of recently deleted files. The space occupied by local snapshots is reported as available by the Finder, and should be considered as such. In the Storage display of System Information, local snapshots are shown as  Backups. The snapshots are automatically deleted when they expire or when free space falls below a certain level. You ordinarily don't need to, and should not, delete local snapshots yourself. If you followed bad advice to disable local snapshots by running a shell command, you may have ended up with a lot of data in the Other category. Ask for instructions in that case.
See this support article for some simple ways to free up storage space.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) or GrandPerspective (GP) to explore the volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one. Note that ODS only works with OS X 10.8 or later. If you're running an older OS version, use GP.
Deleting files inside a photo or iTunes library will corrupt the library. Changes to such a library must be made from within the application that created it. The same goes for Mail files.
Proceed further only if the problem isn't solved by the above steps.
ODS or GP can't see the whole filesystem when you run it just by double-clicking; it only sees files that you have permission to read. To see everything, you have to run it as root.
    Back up all data now.
Install the app in the Applications folder as usual. Quit it if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the corresponding line of text below on this page to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    For ODS:
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/OmniDiskSweeper.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
    For GP:
    security execute-with-privileges /A*/GrandPerspective.app/*/M*/* 2>&-
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. You'll be prompted for your login password.
The application window will open behind other open windows. When you scan a volume, the window will eventually show all files in all folders, sorted by size. It may take a few minutes for the app to finish scanning.
I don't recommend that you make a habit of doing this. Don't delete anything as root. If something needs to be deleted, make sure you know what it is and how it got there, and then delete it by other, safer, means. When in doubt, leave it alone or ask for guidance.
When you're done with the app, quit it and also quit Terminal.

  • What is taking up all my memory on ipad?

I have 2nd generation iPad. I have deleted down to 5 apps and 6oo pictures. It's say I have only 800 megabytes left of memory. But each of apps only use 5-50 megabytes. It says I have used 13gb used. How can this be. What is using so much. What can I do?

How much space is your Other using? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Itunes taking up all my memory on my computer

I bought an external hard drive (drive J) specifically for storage of my itunes and have change my importing location to that drive. However, when I look at the properties of my C and D drive on my computer, the C drive still shows tons of memory left but the D drive only has like 4% of space left. My computer is starting to run very slow but all I really have is my itunes. I believe the D drive is a recovery drive. What do I do to clean that up without losing my music so my computer does not run slow?

Changing the location of the iTunes Music folder in the iTunes preferences moves the location to which new imports and purchases will be saved, but does not just by itself move your existing content there. To do that, you use the Consolidate Library command (under the Advanced menu).
You might want to read through this article:
iTunes: Moving Your iTunes Music Folder
    before you proceed.
IMPORTANT: do not delete the iTunes folder or the preference files it contains from your boot hard drive; delete ONLY the tracks themselves (i.e. the contents of the old iTunes Music folder).

  • "Other" storage taking up all my HD space

My HD space is being taken up by "other".  I believe this to be caused by an iMail application problem related to recovered mail being stored somewhere on my HD.  I've had problem with sending and receiving emails from day one and often times receive alerts stating my email did not send.  I was able to resolve this problem with the help of Apple support about a year ago but now they won't help me without charging me the $19 fee.  Unfortunately, I don't remember how the tech walked me through resolving the problem initially.

Empty the Trash if you haven't already done so. If you use iPhoto, empty its internal Trash first:
    iPhoto ▹ Empty Trash
To locate large files, you can use Spotlight. That method may not find large folders that contain a lot of small files.
You can more effectively use a tool such as OmniDiskSweeper (ODS) to explore your volume and find out what's taking up the space. You can also delete files with it, but don't do that unless you're sure that you know what you're deleting and that all data is safely backed up. That means you have multiple backups, not just one.

  • How can I tell what is taking up all my memory?

My macbook has around 75 GB of memory and I have around 5 GB free.  I don't keep large amounts of music or pictures/videos on here. I don't have a ton of apps either.  I have a dropbox folder that is around 6GB.  How can I figure out where all the space is being taken up?

Well, start by highlighting everything in Macintosh HD.
Then on the keyboard hit Command + i, or just right click on a folder / sidebar, and click Get Info, 1 by 1, or all at once. Your choice.
This will bring up the Get Info, telling you the size of the individual folders.
You can then move into the biggest one & narrow it down even more.

  • Why is the other category taking up all my space?

All of a sudden my computer's hard drive has been consumed by this "other" category. Not too long ago we had half the space on our computer. And whenever I delete applications and such it all comes back. I deleted 11 GB of applications, and two days later it was all consumed by the other category. We didn't even download anything! What is going on and is there a solution?
Macintosh HD                                                                   248.3 MB free out of 499.25 GB
Audio               Movies               Photos               Apps              Backups               Other
Zero KB           Zero KB              Zero KB             Zero KB          Zero KB               499 GB

Select  ▹ System Preferences ▹ Spotlight ▹ Privacy. The list of items excluded from Spotlight indexing is shown (it may be empty.) Click the plus (“+”) icon to add an item to the list. Select your boot volume (under DEVICES) and add it to the list. Then remove it from the list by selecting it and clicking the minus (“-“) icon.
Spotlight will rebuild the index. If you try to do a Spotlight search now from the magnifying-glass icon in the top right corner of the display, a pulsing dot will appear in the icon. When the dot disappears, the indexing is complete.

  • Why does AE CS4 consume all my memory when running a preview?

I have Windows Vista x64 with 4Gb of RAM but everytime i want to make a RAM PREVIEW the program does not release the memory in use. For example: I start with AE CS4 using 2gb of ram, then i make a preview and it reaches to 3gb of ram. If I continue making previews it comes a time when all hangs up becouse i have no more memory left!
I remember from previous versions of After Effects that the "green bar" over the timeline, when you were lack off memory, it started to move at some point and the older rendered frames start to disapear in order to render the new ones, making the lenght of the green bar as long as possible but without taking out ALL your memory.
I've found in Premiere CS4 an option that says: Optimize Rendering for Memory/Performance. This help me out with the same issue in Premiere, but I can't find anything like this en After Effects.
    Any suggestions?

Take a look at the memory and cache settings. Try increasing the amount of memory to leave for other applications. Also, MP4, due to it being long-GOP, does require a higher memory footprint to decode than some of the other formats. AE is designed to use as much ram as you tell it when doing a RAM preview. Depending what else you have running on your system, our defaults may be too much.
For instance Internet Explorer is taking 100 MB just to show this page. If you launch task manager, you'll need to add the Working Set column to get an idea of how much RAM something needs.

  • My 4 gb ipod Nano is full yet there are only 20 songs on it. In summary, it just says "other" is taking up the space. Was fine one day and the next I got this. Help?

Have had problems since downloading iTunes 10. First it moved all my iTunes music files to another location. Next, I lost all my songs on my iPod. I went to replace the music to the iPod that I'd lost, but it only allows me to add about 20 songs (on a 4gb Nano) then says disk is full. In the Summary on the iPod, "other" is taking up all the remaining space. I have no videos, pictures, or anything else on the iPod. How do I free up that "used" space? Please help? And Thanks!

  • TS4009 all of my audio purchases from itunes are stored on my iphone which is taking up all of my memory. can i back them up to icloud? i tried to sync with my itunes library, but the library on my computer doesn't contain all of my songs.

All of my purchases from iTunes are stored on my iPhone and taking up all of my memory. I want to store the music in iCloud if possible, but I can't get it to work. I tried to sync my phone to iTunes, but the library on my computer is all screwed up! I backed up my library to my harddrive, but now a lot of the songs aren't there and the ones that are there have multiple duplicates! If I try to sync my phone to my computer I'm afraid it will sync to the current library on my computer and I will lose all of the music on my phone! HELP this is driving me crazy!

There's a menu choice (I think under "Files") that lets you sync purchased items on a device back to itunes.  Look for that.
iCloud does not store music.  If you want to do that you'd have to subscribe to itunes Match, but to get music to the match servers, you need the music in the itunes library on your computer.
