"other" memory capacity is huge in iTunes

When I connect my iPhone to iTunes, in the capacity bar, the orange memory section is shown to be taking up almost 2GB on my phone. I have a couple short podcasts on my phone that I deleted on my computer, and I don't know what else is included in the "other" section that would be causing so much memory usage on my phone. What can I do to get rid of this?

More than a few hundred MB of "Other" indicates an interrupted or corrupted sync. A restore will fix it. Here are the instructions: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1414
The backup you make before you restore includes information such as mail settings, text messages, notes, call history, contact favorites, sound settings, widget settings, certain network settings, and other preferences including settings and data from third-party applications purchased from the App Store will be restored from the backup. You music, videos, and applications will be reloaded by iTunes. The only thing you will lose is some time while this takes place.

  • Other in memory capacity

When you open iTunes and look at the bottom of the screen, you seen your memory capacity. I have the 8GB with all the updated patches. I look and see my audio, video, photos allocation but there is about 240MB allowcated to "other" What is this and how do I get rid of it.

That can be caused by a corruption of files, possibly in a previous sync. What you need to do is reset the phone, and if that doesn't do it, then a restore. That will fix the incorrect reading in "Other".
    Hope this answers your question.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

hi, I finally got lucky and past the "other" memory status issues when syncing. Now I'm "waiting for changes to be applied" sync stuck all night (itunes yesomite iPhone 6 plus). is this a bug? I have not had a single successful sync with yesomite.
please help. this issue prevents music from syncing. I have set the sync setting to convert songs to 192kbps AAC to save space, I figure that could slow the sync
down, but it's hanging indefinitely (I've left it for 24 hours with out it completing.)
the the only music that appears on the phone are songs purchased from the iTunes Store. 95% of my collection are rips from my CDs.
    thank you for any help!

Yeah it's pretty sad that $1000 phone they put out you such cheap memory It causes issues, I have iPhone 6+128 GB actually this is the second brand-new one they gave me because they keep affording it trying to act like that's not the issue because they're too stupid to know how to check what memory is in each one before they give it to me when I have told them multiple times my back up runs perfectly fine on two 5s phones and a 6 64GB of course running MLC memory.
I told them it's because just like the write ups say I have 809 apps but I have not even put all my music on the phone so I'm still running 50 to 60 gigs free and it crashes and reboots itself sometimes in multitasking and more often than it does that in between multitasking I get a black screen for 1 to 2 seconds in between apps and upon start up the Apple logo screen will flicker and do weird things, One of the genius idiots asked me if I could just delete some of my apps, really that's the answer to fix the phone the customer needs to limit the amount to apps they put on their phone, why the **** get a 128 gig if you can't put on anything you want to it guess they need to start selling them saying you can only put a limited number of apps on them, it's really is a **** joke, I have over $20,000 of Apple merchandise easily and always get the new phone every year but I'm starting to reconsider my decisions in the future because this company is starting to go downhill, The reason water not recalling the phones is because they're dealing with their top-of-the-line thousand dollar phones in this case and most people don't have over two or 300 apps so they're not having as many issues, so basically they have messed up phones they just don't know it in their hands and Apple is just too **** greedy to recall the phones, they'd rather sell customer spends that only work half ***.
Stuff like this will be the downfall of their company, all the people that stay with them because as long as you don't jailbreak their stuff it normally just works without issue will be soon jumping ship if stuff like this keeps up, because I can guarantee they got me thinking now.
not that I wanted to know or should I be expected to but I even offered for them to open up my brand-new phone and just replace the memory to MLC memory which is something I shouldn't have to do with a brand-new **** phone, they should just make one with the right memory and give me a new phone, actually just don't sell customers that buy the top-of-the-line phone from you trash ones in the first place that would be a great option.
what burns me up the most is when you talk to AppleCare and Genius Bar they try to act like the issue isn't there and they're unaware of it, they say that Apple hasn't come out with any information about it, yeah that's because they don't want to recall the trash.
Apple has became nothing better than your run-of-the-mill company, android is becoming just as good as they are sad to say this since I have been an Apple fan for so long but there is no excuse for BS like this they have been looking for options to fix my phone for a month now this is not the way you should treat loyal customers, I would've been better off keeping my 5S and in the future just switching to android.
it's pretty sad that the company has no idea how to check which memory is in their **** phone and even after I offered to let them just replace the memory in my new phone by opening up my brand-new phone to replace it they have no idea how to do that either, yeah Genius Bar sure, I think that should change the name to idiot bar and Apple don't care instead of Apple care.

  • How important is memory capacity?

just wondering how many people here who have 16GB iphones use anything close to the full memoryof the phone?
Id like to buy an iPhone on pay as you go in the UK, but I think the price is really too high.
Im hoping that when the next updates come it might be possible to pick up a cheaper outgoing 8Gb model... just a bit worried about the smaller memory capacity.
Given it now has 3G.... (not quite sure how truthful it is to say its got "broadband speeds") but how true is it to say the phone memory is getting more irrelevant in the sense you have access to the net, and potentially "unlimited storage"? in fact wasnt there a company that was specifically advertising online storage that you can access with the iphone?
I spose the onboard phone memory will be needed for App and itunes storage? or are there options for taking those storage requirements online and thus outside the phone, and accessing them when needed?
    sorry for all the questions!

but how true is it to say the phone memory is getting more irrelevant in the sense you have access to the net, and potentially "unlimited storage"?
Not really true - the things that would take up the most space, i.e. music and videos, cannot be streamed to your iPhone (with the exception of many YouTube videos).
I spose the onboard phone memory will be needed for App and itunes storage?
    Yes.
or are there options for taking those storage requirements online and thus outside the phone, and accessing them when needed?
    No.
Basically, since you cannot add memory to the iPhone, if you think you might want more storage capacity, get it now.
Personally, I have ~1000 songs, 350 pics, ~35 apps and I still have ~9.5 GB available. Videos take up the most space - a full length movie will run about 1 GB, a 30 minute TV episode (really, 22 minutes of footage) will run ~250 MB.

  • 2 questions; how to erase "other memory" on iphone 5 and how to sync to a new computer

Apple support is failing to help my issues so I thought its best to turn to the community. OK so I've talked to Apple before about my "other memory" and I performed a soft reset on my phone and it decreased other memory by maybe a gig. A month later now its higher than it was before at over 5.6 gigs, any way how to make it as little as possible?
Also I just got a new macbook pro and I use to sync my iphone 5 to my macbook (2008), how do I make my macbook pro my primary itunes and still keep all my info on my phone? My new macbook pro itunes says its backed up, but when I plug it in it won't sync any new songs or app data to my itunes, etc.
Any help with these issues will much be appreciated!!

"Other" is all of the data for all of the built in apps. If you delete its contents all of your built in app data will disappear. Some of what is contained in other:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. Some people suggest deleting your music on the phone. DON'T DO IT! The reason that deleting music recovers some Other space is because it deletes cover art. But is also screws up your music, which will no longer play correctly.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Your Other is so large, however, that there may be corrupt data contained in it (unless you send a lot of MMS messages with large attachments). If this is the case you should restore the phone as New.
    =====================
For your other question, the easiest way is to copy your iTunes library folder from the old computer to the new computer. For the hard way, see: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

  • I have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule. Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh? Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?

    Hi,
I  have reached full memory capacity on my 500GB Time Capsule. I am considering purchasing a 2TB Time Capsule.
    a) Do I need to resave all existing data on the new hard drive or can I start afresh?
    b) Or can I link both time capsules to operate independantly?
    Thanks,
    Paul

You may not need to buy a new Time Capsule.
You can connect a USB drive to the Time Capsule, and use it in addition to the TC's internal HD.  You may need a powered USB hub as well.
Exactly what is on your TC?  If it's only Time Machine backups, you may not need to do anything -- Time Machine will delete the oldest backup(s) automatically when it needs room for new ones.  But if you have more than about 250 GB on your internal HD, that 500 GB may not be large enough to keep backups long enough.
If you have other data on the TC's internal HD, besides your backups, you could back up to the external HD and use the internal for the other data, or vice-versa.  But TM backups cannot "span" two drives, and you shouldn't mix backups and other data on the TC's internal HD.

  • Why is the memory capacity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?

    Hi All,
I'm new to all this . I have a question "Why is the memory capcity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?"
    Thanks
    Maggie

Why is the memory capcity of a digital camera's memory card relevant?
    It is not to Photoshop.
But to the photographer it is extremely relevant.  It determines how many images (influenced by "quality") your camera can hold before running out of room to store pictures. A larger memory capacity for your camera will allow you to take and store more and/or higher quality images.
("Quality" in this case is determined by  image size- the number of pixels making up the image in your camera and image "compression" -  how much JPG formatting will effect your image.)
    (attempted analogy coming... watch out!)
Think of the camera memory card as a linen closet to store down pillows. A small closet you can store 10 pillows on a shelf. Double the size of the closet and you can store 20 down pillows.
You also have the choice to stuff the down pillows in small sacks, allowing you to store even more pillows in the closet. The problem is after cramming the down pillows into the small container, they come out battered and not as nice as they were before storage.
    Linen Closet = Memory Card
    Down Pillows = images
Small sacks to stuff pillows into = JPG compression.
(and to add this this questionable analogy... the better down pillows have more feathers, and take up more room in the linen closet)
    Feathers = pixels

  • What takes up 'other' memory??

on the ipod's memory usage bar on itunes, it has 'audio' and 'other'
i have a lot of 'other' memory being taken up
what kind of files would be taking up this space?
    how do i delete it?
all i have on my ipod is songs, so that would be the 'audio' memory?
i really need to get rid of the 'other' memory being used up!!

Other can be the file system, contacts etc. If a lot of space is being taken up try restoring your iPod, this will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7

  • Covers are cleared from memory whenever I change view (iTunes 8.1)

Previous version of iTunes kept album covers in memory after they were loaded. iTunes would clear covers from memory only when RAM is full or other applications need space in RAM.
Now, iTunes 8.1 always clears all album covers from RAM every time I change between list, grid, cover flow view and iTunes Store. This totally defeats the purpose of having RAM; so that data don't have to be constantly reloaded from hard drive.
Does anybody know how to make iTunes 8.1 caches album covers in RAM all the time, probably by registry editing?

I did clean installation of XP last year and do not have any VAIO application installed.
This problem I'm facing just occurred when I updated to iTunes 8.1, so I don't think it causes by other applications. Does anybody else have this problem or is it only me?
Anyway, I do not see any improvement in performance from previous version. I may considering downgrade to 8.0.2.

    no Photos
    6.67 gb free space
and the 14 gb "other" ???? wht is it???
How to get rid of it ????
Have iPhone 5  with iOS 7.02

    Thank you,
This is what I did, after your suggestion:
    Backup iPhone in iTunes
in iPhone>Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings
in iTunes> Restore iPhone with previous Backup (point 1)
There is no need to reset the iPhone with iTunes and no need to manually resync apps and content.
You will have your "new" iPhone with all your apps, settings and media just like before
with only a mere 500 mb (0,5gb) of "other" memory.
    Thanks again for tip

  • Other memory how to remove

I have just upgraded the software on my iphpone 4 and spent ages trying to remove over 8gig of 'other' memory that arrived after the upgrade. I couldn't sync most stuff due to insufficiant memory
I have at last reduced it to .3 gig by unticking all but apps, syncing and then ticking other items (music, photes etc) then syncing again
What has caused this, is it an Apple bug? .

    Good day all,
I have a 4S that had 5+G of "other" that I was trying to free up.  I searched and searched, tried all the suggestions and had no success.  I tried a full restore and freed up the memory but didn't want to loose all my settings, app folders, etc.  After a process of elimination the solution that worked for me was to delete txt messages!  When I went from the 3G to the 4S I restored from a back up.  I've never delete any of my txt message history...  so all that information, photos, videos, etc were being caried from one device to the other for like 3 years!
I started with a test.  Pluged in my 4S, synced it.  Registered 5.2GB of "other".  I ejected the phone from itunes.  I deleted my wifes txt message (with whom I txt the most).  I plugged back in and "other" dropped down by an entire Gig!!  So, I tried again with another that I txt often...  and sure enough when down another Gig.
So, I decided to take the plug and start off fresh...  I deleted ALL of my txt messages and my "other" memory went down to .52gigs!
This is why a FULL restore has been successful for those trying to clear out "other" memory.  When you initiate a Full restore, you are cleaning out your entire memory of txt messages which includes large files of photos and videos!
So this is what worked for me folks!  I hope it helps someone!
