Other memory

I am confused about some things on my 2012 15" MacBook Pro Retina display.....
When I click on the apple at the left then i go to about this mac then more info, it says i have 38.79 GB on audio, which is normal because I have a lot of music, then 682.9MB because of some music videos.  Then 651MB for photos, I only have around 200. Then 5.33GB on apps, the only programs I have downloaded onto my mac were Adobe Flash and Serato Scratch live.  Other than that I don't know what is taking so much space on that part, even when I click on applications in finder, it only shows the preset apps and Scratch live as well as Adobe flash.  then it says backups and that is at 0KB.  now my main problem and big concern,
THE OTHER PORTION HAS 47.13GB!!!!!!!!!!! What could be taking so much space up??!!
Anyone, please give in.
thank you
and also my mac gets really hot in temperature while using it on a solid granit table

See http://pondini.org/OSX/LionStorage.html.
Nothing to worry about.

  • 2 questions; how to erase "other memory" on iphone 5 and how to sync to a new computer

Apple support is failing to help my issues so I thought its best to turn to the community. OK so I've talked to Apple before about my "other memory" and I performed a soft reset on my phone and it decreased other memory by maybe a gig. A month later now its higher than it was before at over 5.6 gigs, any way how to make it as little as possible?
Also I just got a new macbook pro and I use to sync my iphone 5 to my macbook (2008), how do I make my macbook pro my primary itunes and still keep all my info on my phone? My new macbook pro itunes says its backed up, but when I plug it in it won't sync any new songs or app data to my itunes, etc.
Any help with these issues will much be appreciated!!

"Other" is all of the data for all of the built in apps. If you delete its contents all of your built in app data will disappear. Some of what is contained in other:
    email messages and attachments
    Reminders
    Calendar entries
    Contacts
    Text messages
    MMS messages and attachments
    Genius data
    Music cover art
    Operating system settings
    Safari cache
    bookmarks
    Game Center status
    Music catalog
Probably a few I've missed. There was a problem in an earlier version where deleted MMS messages left behind their attachments, but that has been fixed as of 6.1. Some people suggest deleting your music on the phone. DON'T DO IT! The reason that deleting music recovers some Other space is because it deletes cover art. But is also screws up your music, which will no longer play correctly.
You will find posts from people who said they recovered over 1 GB of space by just deleting old text messages.
If you want Other to be smaller you will have to keep less data on your phone; delete old MMS and texts, delete old email (especially from the "deleted" folder), clear the cache, eliminate cover art.
Your Other is so large, however, that there may be corrupt data contained in it (unless you send a lot of MMS messages with large attachments). If this is the case you should restore the phone as New.

For your other question, the easiest way is to copy your iTunes library folder from the old computer to the new computer. For the hard way, see: Syncing to a "New" Computer or replacing a "crashed" Hard Drive

Most of the memory on my phone is taken by music, but the "other" memory is getting annoying. It takes up 1.34GB and i want to delete it. can anyone help me?

Same issue with my iPhone 4. I deleted everything (apps.songs, pics, video) anything you can think of..... I call apple and they recommended a restore so I did and what happen?....  I still see those "other" spaces taking a big chunk of memory. So I made an appointment with the Genius Bar & most likely they will replace my phone ....   Blah !!

Some, possibly, but shouldn't be a problem.

Much of it is OSX and other things needed to run your Mac.

I am working on SSRS 2008 R2. On Preview report in report builder itself, i am getting an error "Attempted to read or write protected memory. This is often an indication that other memory is corrupt".

    Hi Venkat,
According to the error message, I guess that the error occurred when you previewed the report in Business Intelligence Development Studio (BIDS).
Based on my research, I think it may be a Window Layout issue of Visual Studio. Please try the steps below:
Click “Window” button from the toolbar ribbon.
    Click “Reset Windows Layout” option.
Click “Yes” to finish the operation.

  • What takes up 'other' memory??

on the ipod's memory usage bar on itunes, it has 'audio' and 'other'
i have a lot of 'other' memory being taken up
what kind of files would be taking up this space?
    how do i delete it?
all i have on my ipod is songs, so that would be the 'audio' memory?
i really need to get rid of the 'other' memory being used up!!

Other can be the file system, contacts etc. If a lot of space is being taken up try restoring your iPod, this will erase the hard drive, reload the software and put it back to default settings. Once the restore is complete follow the on screen instructions and it should connect to iTunes and give you a prompt to automatically update your library onto the fresh installation: Restoring iPod to Factory Settings with iTunes 7

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
    http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How do I get rid of 14gb of "other memory"

    1,5gb audio
    5.0gb apps(120)
    docs 0.8
    no Photos
    6.67 gb free space
and the 14 gb "other" ???? wht is it???
How to get rid of it ????
Have iPhone 5  with iOS 7.02

    Thank you,
This is what I did, after your suggestion:
    Backup iPhone in iTunes
in iPhone>Settings>General>Reset>Erase all content and Settings
in iTunes> Restore iPhone with previous Backup (point 1)
There is no need to reset the iPhone with iTunes and no need to manually resync apps and content.
You will have your "new" iPhone with all your apps, settings and media just like before
with only a mere 500 mb (0,5gb) of "other" memory.
    Thanks again for tip

  • IPod Touch, iOS6, "Other" memory increasing every sync?

I have noticed that since the "update" to 6.0, my iPod touch has an increasing amount of "other" memory with every sync. The amount of "other" increases by about 400 mb every time I sync it. Even when I synced it twice in a row with no new podcasts or anything at all that would have been different from the sync just performed.
I restored it from backup, and the "other" memory stayed the same. When it got up to 14 GB, I restored and set up as "new", and the "other" memory dropped back to normal, then immediately started increasing with each sync.
I de-selected the only 2 apps that have updated recently, the only thing I couldn't undo is iOS 6. Other than that, I have done nothing different than I've been doing for the 2+ years I've had it.
Is there something I have set wrong in the settings since it's a touch and not a phone? I didn't change anything when 6 was installed, should I?
I really don't want to have to restore this thing as "new" every month!

Thanks for your reply.  I saw those threads and a few others when I searched earlier, but not the one about Safari. I don't use Safari often, but I will try clearing the cache. That's the only one of those things I haven't tried.
I wondered what the "other" was a long time ago, and looked it up. It was behaving normally until recently, after the iOS update, when it started gaining .2-.5 GB per sync. And restoring as "new" didn't stop that, it only reset the "other" to a normal size.
I mainly use this iPod for podcasts & mp3, and watching videos. A few other apps, nothing new added or changed that I could maybe think might be the cause.

  • "other" memory 8GB

I was trying to cut down my memory and saw that other was 4.4 GB, so I looked on the apple helpline and it said to restore you iphone.
However once I had restored it and then re-installed everything from a back up I made this morning the "other" memory went up to 8GB..?
    What do I do know?!
    Thank you

  • Other memory how to remove

I have just upgraded the software on my iphpone 4 and spent ages trying to remove over 8gig of 'other' memory that arrived after the upgrade. I couldn't sync most stuff due to insufficiant memory
I have at last reduced it to .3 gig by unticking all but apps, syncing and then ticking other items (music, photes etc) then syncing again
What has caused this, is it an Apple bug? .

    Good day all,
I have a 4S that had 5+G of "other" that I was trying to free up.  I searched and searched, tried all the suggestions and had no success.  I tried a full restore and freed up the memory but didn't want to loose all my settings, app folders, etc.  After a process of elimination the solution that worked for me was to delete txt messages!  When I went from the 3G to the 4S I restored from a back up.  I've never delete any of my txt message history...  so all that information, photos, videos, etc were being caried from one device to the other for like 3 years!
I started with a test.  Pluged in my 4S, synced it.  Registered 5.2GB of "other".  I ejected the phone from itunes.  I deleted my wifes txt message (with whom I txt the most).  I plugged back in and "other" dropped down by an entire Gig!!  So, I tried again with another that I txt often...  and sure enough when down another Gig.
So, I decided to take the plug and start off fresh...  I deleted ALL of my txt messages and my "other" memory went down to .52gigs!
This is why a FULL restore has been successful for those trying to clear out "other" memory.  When you initiate a Full restore, you are cleaning out your entire memory of txt messages which includes large files of photos and videos!
So this is what worked for me folks!  I hope it helps someone!

  • "other" memory has 7GB worth in it

My ipod touch for whatever reason continually increases the "other memory" and its up to almost 7gb. it is taking up all the space left on my ipod so what is it and how do i get rid of it?

An "other" that large usually indicates that the "other" includes corrupted files.  Usually restoring from backup eliminated the corrupted files. However, sometimes restoring to factory settings/new iPod is required.
    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: How to back up
To restore to factory settings/new iPod see:
