"Other option"at login window.

Hi,
My login window is displaying the "other" option and I want to disable it, I have no use for it, as a matter of fact I don't know why is being displayed lately. Any pointer?

..."the root account is disabled I checked in directory utility."...
You don't mention if "root" ever was enabled... it isn't an effect that I have been able to reproduce, but other users have posted that after enabling "root" at some point, the presence of the "Other..." button in the login window can depend on how the "root" account was disabled. Specifically, "Other" may persist if "root" was disabled through "Directory Utility.app", as opposed to disabling "root" using '/usr/sbin/dsenableroot' (there are differences in the changes made to the user record).
Try launching "/Applications" > "Utilities" > "Terminal.app" and entering this command:

dsenableroot -u adminuser -d

Substitute an "admin" user's "short" name for 'adminuser', and enter that user's "admin" password when prompted for 'user password:'.

• "Other" option in login window disappears randomy?

I've just setup my first Lion server and am using a test user. I've successfully binded the client computer. All the DNS setup seems to work (forward and reverse). But a weird thing is, sometimes the "Other" option in the login window just disappears randomly. Sometimes it'll be there, sometimes it'll just show only the local users.
I don't get it. Any ideas?

What I have found is that it can take 15 to 30 seconds (or as we refer to that much time in IT, forever) to show up. Even if you log in as a network user and log right back out.
Made me remember the shortcut for getting the name and password screen:
Command-Option-an arrow key and press return.

• Mysterious "Other" User at Login Window????

Hi folks,
Ive just updated my old iMac G3 to Tiger 10.4.3 (from OS9) and connected it to my Powermac G5 (10.4.3) via a network cable. The thing is for some reason when the iMac boots up the login window shows the correct user (my wife) but also shows another icon underneath called "other" I recognize the icon (it's the shilhouetted guy with the blue background, Admin?) but my wife's is the only account on the machine. If i type her details in the "other" user it logs in as her the same as if i login with her icon? What is this and how can i get rid of it?
Thanks.

I seem to remember this "Other" as an option in Jaguar or Panther, but I can't seem to find it in Tiger. Have you enabled the root user? That's usually what this "Other" user was for — it presented the Name and Password fields instead of a list of users so you could type in "root" and the root password to log in as root. (If you don't know what root is, don't worry about it.)
To get rid of it, I would try switching some of the Login Options in the Accounts preference pane. Specifically, pick the option that says Display login window as Name and password instead of List of users. Log out, see if that sticks, log back in, switch back to List of users. Log out, see if it's fixed. That's definitely the first thing I would try.

• Login Options - Display login window as: preference unavailable

Hi:
I apologise if this topic has been posted before, but I've been searching the web and these forums for awhile now and nothing similar has come up:
Running 10.5.8, I set the preference for "Display login window as:" to list of users. Everything was working as I expected, until I hooked my computer up to my school's OS X network and now all I get is the regular login/password screen. When I go back to the Login Options prefpane, "Display login window as:" is now greyed out and I can't change anything.
Any ideas about what happened?
Thanks

Have you tried returning to the school and connecting to the network since your settings changed? I would log into that network again and see if the box is accessible when you are logged in. (If it works, clamp the padlock on that setting.) If that doesn't help, in your shoes my next step would be finding the network administrator for the school and see if they might have a suggestion.
Caveat: I am new to Leopard and have not been in your situation. But so far nobody has given you any suggestions, and mine won't make things worse.
Good luck, and please post back with an update.

• Cant see the option to login as microsoft account on system after windows 8 was refreshed with 8.1

My system came with Windows8 installation. And I created my windows account on this.
Later it prompted for 8.1 update and I went with that.
After 8.1 got installed, I also created my local account.
I logged in as local account (also admin account) and then logged out. first issue came as system errored out once I tried to login as microsoft account now. I dont know why.. It was not wrong password error. It just said error logging into microsoft account
Now I do not see an option to login as microsoft account. PLease note, I do not even see this listed in user accounts.
There are other issues too, like for every folder, I need to specifically provide admin access even if I am logged in as local administrator account. But I am fine with these issues.Obviously, they irritate :).
But I would like to resolve the microsoft account issue first.. HOw do I get it back ..

Hi,
Please check your Microsoft Account status in User Account Manager:Control Panel\User Accounts\User Accounts
In addition, please access to the path of registry to check your Microsoft Account if it locate there.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList.
If problem persists, the workaround method may be need you delete and readd your Microsoft Account on your computer.

• Mac Client Login Window Takes Long Time "Other"

Mac 10.6.x client is successfully joined to the Windows Server 2008 based domain. But it’s taking too much time (approx. 5 to 7 minutes) to shows the “Other” option (using that, log on by AD user) in login window on Mac client.
Has anyone idea, why is it taking that long time.

Are you connected wirelessly or wired?
Which Mac are you using?

• Allow network users to login at login window option missing

I hope someone can shed some light on this.
I have bound a 10.6.2 machine to a Windows 2003 domain successfully. However, the checkbox to "allow network users to login at login window" is missing completely. There's a blank space. I've looked at a few other machines that haven't been joined to the domain and the option is missing from there as well.
Am I missing something simple? Did I miss something during the OS install? This is a fresh 10.6.2 install.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is keeping us from allowing domain users to log on. Thanks in advance.

I installed ADmitMac and the option shows up. I removed it and the option goes away. There's obviously a flag being set somewhere. Any thoughts?

• "Other.." at login window

I'm seeing "Other..." at the login window. But, unlike some other threads here, it hasn't replaced the several user accounts I have. I see it in addition to them.
Root login is disabled. I tried enabling it and disabling it again, and it's still there. Anyone know how to get rid of it?

"Other.." can denote that you have networked accounts or something of the like.
Check under System Preferences -> Accounts -> On the Left column you will want to click on "Login Options" and uncheck "Allow network users to log in at login window"

• Getting rid of "Other" in login window

Is it possible to get rid of the "other" option in the login window without disabling root user? If so, how?
Thanks,
Biko

sorry, I should have clarified...
I know that it's there so I can log into root user but somehow a while back I accidentally did something to get rid of "other" but by pushing option-o or a key combination like that and then selecting any user it would then ask for a user name and password so I could still log into root user while it was hidden from the list of users... I was hoping someone would know how to make that happen again... thanks anyways though:)

Recently, iTunes upgraded. My 7th generation iPod is now not recognized and I cannot sync. The troubleshooting talks about being visible in Windows (iPod is invisible) No other options and nothing about windows 8

I have had similar issues with mine, happens mainly if I transfer songs and then decide to disconnect my iPod to listen to them with my IEMs (I use Interenet Explorer in my case and it is not neccessarely up when this happens, so I seriously doubt it is an issue conencted to the web browser). I have no patience for this so my trick is I try to eject it from iTunes, if that does not work, then I bring Windows explorer up, right mouse click on the iPod mounted drive and select Eject. It gives me the same warning but there is a third button selection called Continue. When I choose that it just disconnets the drive anyway and the iPod is finally disconnected. It seems to work each and every time I do it so this solution is fine for me. Would be intersting to see what the real root cause of this is because I started getting this problem with the newer iTunes 11.

For some reason when my wife reboot her iBook running 10.3.9 the login window came up and only showed the "Other..." account listed. Her account and mine are both not visible. Nothing was changed before rebooting and we cannot login using Other even if we type our username and password.

Here again a poster ask for help to solve a problem...he/she solves the problem and he/she post that the problem was fixed...but did not tell the rest of us how the problem was solved!!!!

• HELP! "Other..." Suddenly Appeared on Login Window

i installed to two new pieces of software yesterday: the latest adobe flash "upgrade" and the livescribe desktop. i subsequently deleted livescribe.
here's my problem: when i restarted this morning, a new entry appeared on my login window called "other...". i understand this is there to access the root or other hidden accounts, but why did it just appear? i'm suspicious that something (flash or livescribe) created a new (hidden? malware?) account on my machine that caused "other..." to appear.
i've used the terminal command dscacheutil -q group to list all my users (there are a lot!), and this just brings up other questions.
1. should i worry about how many user accounts are on my machine? or more specifically, how do i know *which* accounts i should worry about?
2. is there a way to see *when* an account was created?
3. anyone know if the account
name: PenCommService
password:
gid: -2
is an apple account, or did it come from livescribe?
4. and finally, why would "other..." suddenly appear on my login window?
any help greatly appreciated!

Did you get this resloved. I had the same thing happen. I think it may have to do with installing Snow Leopard Server utilities on my mac. I hate thinking it's there for someone else to be able to login. If I use that window and enter my information, I log in. If I make something up, no dice. Any breakthrough on what this is?
