"Other" System Preferences still Grey!

Hi all,
Going back to an issue from way back when... it has returned. Does anyone have an idea how to solve this.
My "Other" system preferences are all greyed out. Since I have admin privileges on my machine, I should have access to all preferences.
Apparently this is a network issue, as my machine is on a network and the IT department can administer the machines remotely. At one time, the IT mac guru told me how to delete a .plist in my Library and the preferences came back under my control.
But! He has left our company, and the remaining IT-ers have no idea what I am talking about.
Does anyone here have an idea of what it could be? Thanks for any help.

Might have been ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. The only "harm" deleting .plist files will do is erase your stored settings. You can move the .plist files out of the ~/Library/Preferences/ folder, and a new one will be created. If that doesn't correct the problem, simply copy the moved .plist file back to the ~/Library/Preferences/ (overwrite the newly-created replacement), and try another relevant .plist file.
Hope this helps...

you need to be running OSX 10.7 or 10.8 to use iCloud i believe. It shows you are using 10.6.8 which doesn't support iCloud.

  • System Preferences Panes greyed out unless run with sudo

Just installed Java 7 U51 on Mountain Lion 10.8.5
This pane is greyed out & not executable
If I try to run directly:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/JavaAppletPlugin.plugin/Contents/Home/lib/deploy/JavaControlPanel.pref Pane
I get an error (most idiotic in fact):
You can't open "Java" preferences pane because it is not available to you at this time
The "solution" is to open System Preferences as root with
      sudo /Applications/System\ Preferences.app/Contents/MacOS/System\ Preferences
But surely that is not what one should need to do to configure preferences?

As it happened there were MCX policies in place & these System Preferences items were not checked (they were most likely added AFTER preferences were made
Ticking them, made it all behave normal

  • System Preferences still quitting

Hi, I was having problems with my system preferences quitting unexpectedly when I tried to alter them. The computer also will not wake from sleep--so i turned off that function. I found this advice in an archived topic. I tried it all and the problem was solved. Everything was working great (except the sleep function...but i don't mind that). I believe it was a problem with the cache, as the other steps didn't seem to do much. About 5 days later the problem has returned the same as before.
    Any guesses why?
And also, if I upgrade to Tiger will these problems follow or be eradicated by the upgrade.
Here was the advice I followed:
System Preference Quits/Crashes/Lost a Preference Pane
    (~ means your home directory)
    ]b]Preferences folder corrupted
It has been reported that DiskWarrior has solved the problem in some cases
If you have trouble opening any system preferences. try this....
    • Try logging on to OS X using another admin account. If the same problem exists, it is a system level problem..Try repairing permissions (from Disk Utility). Then log out out/login or restart and test the system preference again.
]b]Corrupt Preferences......Quit System Preferences if it is open.
    • Candidates for trashing of files......

where - xxx is an alphanumeric string

    (3) Empty the Trash.
    (4) Log out/Log in or restart. If this did not help, go to ~/Library and drag the folder Preferences to the desktop. Restart and see if this solved the problem
[b/• If it still doesn't work,
try deleting the contents of all the cache folders on your mac:
    /library/caches,
    /system/library/caches,
    ~/library/caches within their home folders.
You may need to log in as root to accomplish this. Then reboot and test.
    Next step... ....
    - Quit System Preferences, if it is open.
    - Navigate to ~/Library ..... drag the "Preferences" folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    - If this works, delete the old preferences folder. (You'll have to go through some of your System Preferences and apps to set the preferences back to how you like them).
Navigate to ~/Library/Fonts ....... drag this folder to the desktop.
    - Restart and test your applications.
    - If they work start adding the fonts back few at a time.
( A likely suspect is Time RO, also if you do not use Classic you can trash the classic fonts.)
    • If that doesn't help,
try disconnecting all peripheral devices except for monitor, keyboard, and mouse, and resetting the PRAM, then test before reconnecting any peripherals.

    Jennifer:
I don't know why it keeps happening.
Boot from your install disk holding down the "C" key. Once booted go to the installer menu and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel and First Aid in the main panel. Click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports that disk requires not repair, quit DU, restart from internal HDD. Then go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left panel and First Aid in main panel. Click on the Repair Disk Permissions button.
If DU reports errors, click Repair again and again until no errors are found. If DU reports errors it cannot repair you will need a utility like Tech Tool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    Good luck.

I have a few other prefs in system prefs that i do not need how do i remove them?

In theory.. any prefs you've added should be in the main drive>Library>PreferencePanes
Just delete them, and log out and back in or re-start.

    To further explain:
I didn't need to locate any invisible files in my case.  I discovered that I had 4 versions of the System Preferences application on my computer.  (The System Preference applicatioin is what loads the preference pains when you seledt System Preferences.)  I merely searched for "System Preferences" in spotlight.  Spotlight located 4 different versions of the System Preferences application. Some of those versions apparently tied to preference panes that used the old 32 bit encoding from the non Intel processor days.  When I clicked on the System Preferences under the Apple menue it was apparently pulling up an old version of the System Preferences applicatioin instead of the correct one in the main Applications folder.  I also noted that if I clicked on System Preferernces in the dock or directly in the the Applications folder, I would not have the problem of some of the preference panes not able to be viewed because of the " "it doesn’t work on an Intel-based Mac" message.  So I surmised that the correct System Preferences application was in the Applications Folder on the top level of the drive directory like it was supposed to be but that when I clicked on System Preferences from the Apple menue it was loading one of the 3 old System Preferences applications that were buried elsewhere on my hard drive.  If you find you have more than one System Preferences application on your hard drive you need to trash the other System Preferences Applications.  Before trashing the duplicates, you should test the one in the main Applications folder by directly double clicking it and make sure all the preference panes in it work properly then trash the duplicate System Preferences applications you found in spotlight.
You may also find like I did, that you not only have duplicates of the System Preferences on your hard drive but also several old duplicates of the entire Applications folder buried on your hard drive. if that is the case you should compare each folder and make sure there is nothing in the old duplicate Applications folders you still need.  You will probably find that all of the latest versions of your applications are in the main Applications folder where they should be.  If so then trash all the old duplicate Applications folders as well.  Keep only the main Applications folder on the top level of the hard drive.
Trashing all these extra old Applications folders that held old duplicates of all my applications in them on my hard drive solved a bunch of other problems I was having with some of the applications as well.
For the technically minded:  Why does this happen with Mavericks and not with Mountain Lion?  I suspect that the old Applications folders and old duplicate System Sreferences applications didn't matter to Mountain Lion because it searched for the System Preference application under the Apple menu differently than Mavericks does.  I believe Mountain Lion seached all the top levels of the Application folder before drilling down into any subfolders to find the System Preferences application.  Mavericks apparently does it the opposite way.  It searches the first subfolder in you Applications folder and drills all the way down in that subfolder first before going to the next subfolder and drilling down in that subfolder all the way to the bottom.  So it searches all the subfolders before searching the main level of the Applications folder for System Preferences.  Since my old duplicate System Preferences applications where in subfolders with titles that were earlier in the alphabet than the main System Preferences application it searched those subfolders first, found the old System Preferences application in the those earlier folders and loaded the old System Preferences first in the subfolders instead of the correct one further on in the main Applications folder.  If any one else has a better idea let me know.

  • Just installed 10.6.4. Now clicking on Print&Fax crashes system preferences

    Hi all,
Just installed Snow Leopard 10.6.4 and then couldn't print from my Kodak EasyShare 5300 printer. I installed updated software and firmware from Kodak. Still can't print and when I click on Print & Fax in system preferences it crashes system preferences. (Other system preferences options don't make it crash.)
I've repaired permissions and I've unplugged USB and power to printer and replugged and restarted computer and still no luck.
Help! Thanks so much, guys. You're an awesome bunch of folks who have been so helpful in the past. Hoping you can advise me here.

Tried that and it still crashed System Preferences when I clicked on Printer&Fax. But thanks for replying! Still looking for solutions. I know it's tough when I'm asking at the start of a holiday weekend!

  • System preferences freezes

When i open my system preferences, it freezes. i have done a force quit, restart, shut down still freezes. When it opens all it says is loading images.

This morning (Sydney EST), I clicked on to System Preferences and seems to be working OK now.
Not sure what changed between yesterday and today, though I had left system preferences in "Hang" last night (in other words I didn't do a forced quit when it seemingly froze).
This morning was able to change wallpaper no problem and was able to go into other system preferences and have a play around.
I hope someone with more wit than I can make sense of all this.
    Thanks - mfbe

  • Where have System Preferences gone???

After re-installing the operating system, because it was no longer possible to log on to my iMac, suddenly there are no more system preferences. I select "System preferences" in the Apple menu and nothing happens.
Any ideas what to do or try to get access to system preferences back?
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Hi Michael!
Is System Preferences still in your Applications folder?
Does it appear in the Dock?
Computer > HD > Applications: HERE?
In Another Of Your Posts, your computer specs state that you are running iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.3.5).
This post states iMac G4 Mac OS X (10.2.x).
What type of install did you do, to go from 10.3 to 10.2?
Is there a Previous System Folder on your HD?
When you discovered your Memory Problem, which OS X were you using?
Have you tested the new RAM?
Sorry for all of the questions, but I'm trying to lay some groundwork, to assist readers who may be able to help you.
When posting a question, it is best to divulge as much background info as possible.
All of your problems, seem to me, to be somehow related.
    Good Luck!

That suggests you don't have the proper version installed. This may result from defects in a system you upgraded to SL. Perhaps you should try reinstalling SL or try replacing the application from the installer DVD. First, run the Optional Installs installer located in the folder of the same name. You may be able to reinstall System Preferences without any fanfare. However, if not then do the following:
How to Use Pacifist to Replace Deleted or Missing OS X Components
Insert the OS X Installer DVD into the optical drive. Use a simple utility like TinkerTool to toggle invisibility so you can see invisible items. Alternatively, open the Terminal application in your Utilities folder and at the prompt enter the following:
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles Yes
    Press RETURN.
To turn off the display of invisible files repeat the above command substituting No for Yes.
The install packages are located in the /System/Installation/ folder on the DVD.
Download the shareware utility Pacifist from VersionTracker or MacUpdate. Use it to extract a fresh copy of the missing item(s) from the file archives on your OS X installation DVD. The file archives are in the /System/Installations/ folder (use Go to Folder option in the Go menu of the Finder.)
Here are Four Basic ways to use Pacifist (courtesy of George Orville.)
    A. Drag a .pkg icon onto the Pacifist window .....proceed to step 7.
    B. Click on “Open Package ....” and navigate to package desired and click “Open” in the open/save window.....proceed to step 7.
    C. Insert Mac OS X installer CD and when it mounts, navigate to .... Menu->Go->Go to Folder.
In the path field enter or paste ....
/Volumes/disc name/System/Installation/Packages (where disc name is the name of the CD/DVD that you inserted.
    • Click on the "Go" button .....
    • Drag a .pkg to Pacifist..... proceed to step 7.
The package you'll need will have to be discovered by trial and error, but for most applications you should start with the Essentials.pkg and/or Additional Essentials.pkg.
    D. Insert your Mac OS X install disk 1 .... and open Pacifist.
    1. In Pacifist, select "Open Mac OS X Install Packages" ... dialog may appear asking for disk 2, then disk 3 and finally disk 1 again.... {if DVD is not used)...If “Stop Loading” is selected...the procedure will stop!!!
2a. When loading is complete, a new window appears, click the triangle to display contents of each package...Select item and proceed to step 7.
2b. or click the “Find” icon in the Pacifist window and type the name of the software you need.
    3. In the list that comes back, click the top most entry for the item that you want. ..... that is the one for the English language.
    4. On the top of the Pacifist window, click “verify” .... you will probably be prompted for your password.
    5. Enter checks for.... “verify permissions” and “verify file contents.” and click “verify” ....enter password when prompted.... you will get back output which may look like this:
    20 files were scanned.
20 of 20 files were present on the hard disk.
0 of 20 files had file permissions that did not match those specified in the package.
0 of 20 files had checksums that did not match those specified in the package.
    6. Click “close”. Go to step 7.
    Extract or Install........
    7. In the Toolbar (upper left), you now have the option to extract or install. Click a file in the lower list and those two icons will be enabled.
    8. If “Extract to...” is selected.... navigate to the location where the file will be placed, select “choose”, select “extract” in new dialog that appears, authenicate , if prompted, click “OK”.
    9. In the next dialog, click “Extract”.
    10. If “Install” is selected... dialog will appear with the location/path of the installed software. Click “Install”
    11. Type in your password, click “OK”
    • Pacifist will begin to extract files.
    12. In steps 8/10ß.... you also have the choice to “cancel”
    Notes.....
    • Pacifist may find that a file it is installing already exists on the hard disk. Pacifist will present you with an alert panel....
    Stop
    Leave original alone
    Update ..... Default selection
Replace .... Replace option should only be used on full install packages

  • System Preferences quits when iCloud selected

When I select iCloud or Mail/Contacts/Calendar in System Preferences, the system Preferences application quits. If I start System Preferences in 32 bit mode, the iCloud application starts without System Preferences quitting, but when selecting Mail/Contacts/Calendar the System Preferences still causes System Preferences to quit. I assume that i should be running System Preferences in the 64 bit mode, but 32 bit mode does't solve the Mail/Contacts/Calendar problem. I have searched for a solution but still haven't found an answer. The Calendar application works, but I haven't entered any contacts yet to see if Contacts works.
I am running OS10.8.5 in my 2013 MacBook Air.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • System preferences crashes as soon as I try and open it and safari opend automatically as soon as I switch my MacBook on, do I have a bug?

Whenever I try to open my System Preferences it takes a long time to think about it then crashes, below is the error report.
Also noticed that Safari opens automatically when I turn my Macbook on. About 6 weeks ago I had trouble with the Macbook picking up our wireless connection at home so I went and fiddled with some things in System Preferences (ill-advised as I know nothing about these things) so have I just unticked something important or do I have a bug? Any help is appreciated!

I've tried the link and deleted com.apple.systempreferences.plist from the various lists such as:
    Users/yourname/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.xxxxx.plist
Still can't open System Preference still crashes and cannot be opened. Whenever I  spend too long looking around in the Users/yourname/Library/Preferences folder the whole Macbook freezes and I have to force switch it off.
The reason I asked about QuickLook is because there's something in the Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/ called com.apple.quicklookdaemon.plist that keeps returning evening when you trash it. Thought this might be suspicious.

  • System Preference crash when editing built-in configuration

My built-in ethernet is working fine, with a static IP. However, now whenever I try to edit the built-in ethernet configuraiton the System Preferences crash. (I have sent a report to Apple on the crash.)
I have tried reinstalling the System with keepting the previous users. It appears the configuration is brought over into the new configuration but System Preferences still crashes.
I also get the same problem if I try to edit the Locations.
Also everytime I open the network panel, I get a warning that a new port has been detected - Bluetooth. That happens whether bluetooth is turned on or not.
I can edit the airport configuration or my VPN definitions.

I suspect it is an incompatible configuration from my previous Macbook G4 17" as well.
Any ideas on which specific files I should try to change? I have been digging around but can't seem to find the relevant files yet.
    Thanks.

  • Nothing comes on the monitor when I press "system preferences"

What do I need to do if nothing happens when I select "System Preferences"?

Is System Preferences still in your Application folder?  If it is will it start if You open it from there?

I trashed and empty-trashed a link to system preferences, and now am unable to access it...the previous "lightswitch" icon had a question mark on it and "disappeared into dust when i tried to move it. I can't open it from the little blue apple in the top left corner, and I don't know if I will lose all my other info if I reload Tiger. Any ideas?

    Hi Jonny,
Was it the icon in the Dock, or on your Finder sidebar?
Do you still have System Preferences in your Applications folder?
Is System Preferences still in your Application folder? If it is try this:
    Delete these files:
    ~(YourHome)/Library/Preferences /com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    ~(YourHome)/Library/Caches
    ~(YourHome)/Library/Preferences/By Host/com.apple.systempreferences.xxx.plist and com.apple.PrefPane.Network.xxx.plist (the X's will be numbers)
    Now launch System Preferences.
If you have tossed the app itself and System Preferences is not in your Applications folder you can use You can use Pacifist to extract and install just that application from your install disks.
