'Other' taking unusual space in my iPhone 4s

Recently i erased all content and settings on my iPhone 4s and set up it as a new phone because it had taken more than 1.4 GB of space for 'other' category according to iTunes. But after the set up process (As a new phone) i noticed that it's taking more than 400MB of space for 'other'. I have iOS 7.0.6. Is it possible to erase all 'other' data from the iPhone or at least reduce it, it kinda bugs me now. Thanks in advanced for any help.

Generally, anything under 2 GB is considered the normal amount of "other". You cannot eliminate it. It is the basic data needed for the built in apps. If it goes over 2 GB, it usually indicates corrupted data and the only way to fix that is to do a restore through iTunes then reload your most recent backup.

Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.

"Other" includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It should normally be about 1 GB.  Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.
Unfortunately the best solution to fix your issue is a restore. Back up your phone, then restore it using iTunes.  Follow this guide:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

  • Other taking up space with a brand new iPhone

other taking up space with a brand new iPhone, never used or plugged in. 1st time conecting and it says 564.8mb other. WTH??

I'm sorry, I don't understand your comment. Any computer program has at least 2 divisions. A Code division and a Data division. When we talk about the size of a program or operating system we mean the size of the Code division. The Data division will be of variable size, and can change dynamically. So the size of iOS when you download it is the size of the code. Other includes the data division of iOS, plus the data divisions of all apps that come bundled with iOS, plus the Safari cache, plus all email messages, plus all texts, plus all contacts, plus all calender events, plus all notes, plus all reminders, plus the music catalog, plus album art, plus data used by the iTunes & App stores, plus data used by the Genius feature, pus data used by Game Center, plus data used by Apple Maps (but not Google maps if you have it), plus a few things I've probably forgotten about.
Immediately after a new phone is activated, or after it is restored as new, Other still contains the data divisions of iOS. And if you have logged in to the iTunes and App stores during setup it contains the information from your account for those apps. And if you have logged in to iCloud it contains all of your iCloud contacts, calendar events, notes, reminders and email.
I've explained this several different ways. I'm not going to try again.

  • HT4914 I have iTunes Match. Why is music still taking up space on my iPhone?

I just purchased iTunes Match. Why is my music still taking up space on my iPhone?

If you have iTunes Match, yes the idea of that is that you have access to all your music from anywhere. If you access it though you will be downloading it, in order to play the music you have chosen to play, once downloaded, that music will stay on your device unless you delete it.
Music that is on your phone will show up as normal, music that is only in the cloud will have a cloud icon next to it, when downloaded the cloud icon will disappear, if you delete it again the cloud icon will disappear again.
In the example below, all my albums by Matt Schofield are on my phone, the others would need downloading.
Photo's are different they kept on your device and only synced to the cloud so they can be pushed to other devices.

  • Why is Photo Stream taking up space on my iPhone? I don't even use Photo Stream?

I was just going through my pictures, seeing how much room they're taking up on my phone, ect. when I notice Photo Stream is taking up space on my phone. I don't use Photo Stream... As far as I know. It says it using 3.9 KB, but I have no idea where that number is coming from. How can I view what's taking up that space, if it's possible?

This is what I mean. I'm seeing the 3.9 KB usage for Photo Stream under General>UIsage>Photos and Camera, nothing to do with the storage on iCloud and I have Photo Stream and everything to do with iCloud and photo sharing off. However, I may have had Photo Stream on before for a few weeks before I turned it off long ago. Could that data/used space just be a few photos that were once in Photo Stream before I turned it off if I've had it on before?

  • On my iPhone summary there is over 10GB of "other" taking up space on my phone. Why is this even there if I have an unused 20GB of iCloud?

I don't know what the data is that in in the "other" category or how to move it off of my phone but it is taking up almost all my space. What do I do? I have all possible things stored on iCloud, or so I believe.

Other includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It should normally be about 1 GB.  Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.  To fix this, back it up, then restore it using iTunes.  Follow this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

  • Ways to get rid of/reduce the "Other" storage taking up space on my iPhone?

I didn't really know where to put this question and I'm sure this is a common one but I have 3.78 GB being used up in the "Other" catagory. I know that deleting texts helps, do you guys know of anything else that could help give me back some storage? Oh and same with "Documents and Data", not really sure what that even is to be honest.

    Very welcome.
If restore from backup does not solve, then restore as new.

  • Why is my shared photo stream taking up space on my iPhone when I have turned off photo sharing?

I have an iPhone 5c with iOS 8.3. It's only an 8GB iPhone, so I only have about 5.2GB of space to use. So I have to be very picky about what stays and what goes on my iPhone. Photos is one of those things that don't stay on my phone long. I have deleted all of my pictures out of my albums (both camera roll and recently deleted) and there can be no photos found in my library. In settings, I turned off all photo sharing capabilities, so I shouldn't be getting shared photos from family members on my phone and stuff. So why does my storage say that shared photo stream is taking up 54.6MB? I would like it to say 0MB. Am I missing something? I've included a couple screenshots to help clarify things. Thanks for your help!

How can I bulk delete contacts from my iPhone 4S? I've imported them from gmail and hotmail and there are many more than I need. Deleting them one by one will take ages, there must be a quicker way! Also, do contacts take up space on the phone or are they stored remotely?
    Thanks.. J

You should be syncing your contacts with an app on your computer or cloud service (iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, etc), and not relying on a backup.  If you haven't been doing this, start now and then restore your old backup.  You will then be able to sync the new contacts back into the phone.  However, you will lose all messages, etc newer thant the backup.

  • My messages are taking up space on my iphone even after I delete them.

I delete my text messages and afterwords they are still taking up the same amount of space when I check my usage on my phone. I have turned of spotlight search, synced to iTunes and none of that has worked.

The only option I see is to restore your phone as new to removed the save message in usage.
I have about 6.7 gb of saved messaged, I've done all the troubleshooting steps and only a restore will get rid of it.

  • "Other" Taking up Space!!!

I know it's most likely vital to my iPod's operation, but the "other" category, under capacity when I plug my iPod into iTunes is about 550 MB. It doesn't seem like a lot compared to my 30GB max, but since my iPod's almost full, every MB counts.
Is there any way to minimize this "other" category? I have already removed all calendars, notes, and contacts and there is nothing but music actually on my iPod.
    Thanks,
    Geoff

That makes sense, about the album art. On the iPod, it is stored separately from the song file. You can probably check to see if this is the case by going to the iPod's pane in iTunes and, under the Music tab, uncheck the +Display album artwork on your iPod+ checkbox. After syncing, if this frees up a good part of that space, you've found your source for the "other" space being occupied, and you can decide if you want the album art or not.

  • Photos are taking up space on my iPhone, but I have no photos.

When I sync my 16GB iPhone 4 to my MacBook Pro, the bar at the bottom shows that it is currently holding over 5GB of photos. I have only a few hundred from the camera, and none from iPhoto on my Mac. This is preventing me from syncing music and other files to my device, and it's becoming extremely inconvenient... Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue or ideas about why this might be happening? Thanks in advance.

Do you have any lengthy videos in your Camera Roll that could be causing your problem?
If not, the issue may be a software glitch that could be resolved by updating your software to the newest version, 4.2.8.
    I hope this helps.

  • How can i clean up the "other" taking up space on my ipod touch?

How can i clean it up?

This is also where apps store their information on your ipod, along with emails.  If you have a lot of emails on your ipod or some have large attachments, cleaning this up can also reduce the file size.

  • When I sync my ipad and iphone it says I have 9gb of "other' taking up mememory. What does this mean?

When I sync my ipad mini it says there 9gb of "other" taking up space. How do I find out what this is so I can delete files????

Most likely there is corrupt data on your iPad.
Restore and see if that helps.
Next try to restore as new.
If neither of those help take it to Apple.

  • I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) but the messages are still there.

I deleted some of my text message histories to get rid of 'other' space (6.33 gb). They were gone from iMessage, but they still showed up in search, so they were still taking up space on my phone. I synced my iPhone (4s) with iTunes but the messages are still there. How can I get rid of these texts for good and have more space on my phone? 6.33 gb of other space is way too much, thats almost half of my overall available space (13.5 gb.) I don't want to reset my phone and lose all my other texts/ app progress/ photos. I do have backups, but when I restore from the backup the other space comes back along with everything else. What can I do to get rid of this other space and the 'deleted' text messages? (I'm running iOS 6.1.3 if that helps)

But once again, I do not want to lose my other texts, app progress, and photos. I could sync the photos but i would still lose the app progress and texts. I would only restore if it was the only option left, but the other space, as already stated, isnt the main concern. The main concern is those 'deleted' texts. If they go, then a good size chunk of the other space goes. I know you CAN delete texts for good. It worked fine before. All i want to know is why its not working for me now, and how to fix it.
I also know that when you delete texts on your iphone, they get marked for deletion, however they stay on your device (thats why they show up when you search for them.) then when you sync your device with itunes, the texts marked for deletion should disappear. When i synced they didnt disappear. Thats what i need an explanation/solution for. Why the texts marked for deletion didnt get fully deleted after the sync.
