"Other" taking up 1 gig of space!

As you know the catigories for memory are-
-Audio
-Photos
-Other
This "Other" is taking up too much space and I'm not happy about it. I don't know what's in other or what I'm stuffing it with but, I know that this is bad. Please help!
iPod nano 1st generation 4 gigabytes   Mac OS X (10.4.9)   finder says it's empty

If there's nothing on the iPod which you want to keep that isn't in your computer, use the instructions in this article to restore the iPod, and then transfer the music, videos, and other files back to it.

  • VAR and Swap Files - Taking up 3 gigs of space!

My 60 gig HD has been getting close to its size limit so I ran DiskSweeper to see if there were some unneeded files etc. that I could throw away. I discovered that the VAR folder was using 1.95 gigs and in the VM folder, the swap files were taking up about 1 gig...
I guess these are essential system files and can’t be deleted or reduced in size, or can they?
    Thanks in advance!

To clear the swap file(s) restart your computer. I've never had more than two swap files, but then I have enough RAM for what I do. If your system keeps creating large swap files then it is a sign you need more RAM. If you can't get more, you'll need to limit the number of RAM hungry programs you have running at the same time. Because of the things that get dynamically created as you work, such as swap files and temp files, you should have a minimum of 10% of your drive free, and 15 would be safer. If I were you I would make sure I always had 10GBs free. You might look into getting an external drive, and move some of your files over to it. For instance, you can move your iTunes music library to another drive--I've done that because my startup drive is also a "mere" 60GBs.

  • I have a Mac book pro with 750 gigs of space but when I check the memory available it's telling me that I have 1.5 gigs of available space and that my scratch hard drive is full. When looking in the color code of storage it's all other consuming the space

Ok so I have a MacBook Pro that has 750 gigs of space but I keep getting an error message that my scratch hard drive us full. When I look at the storage it's saying that I have 1.5 available gigs of space and when I dig deeper it shows that it's not video, audio or document but it's other. What can it be and what can I do about it?

See here for answer about the OTHER which is taking up space:

  • What is the "Other" taking up all my iPod disk space?

I have the 80GB Video iPod. I thought I had plenty of free space judging just by how little room the music and videos were taking up, but then I noticed that a large percentage of the remaining space was actually marked as "other" on the colored bar in iTunes rather than "Free Space". But I have no idea what all that "Other" is. I'm talking about 35.7GB of "Other", while my 3.3days of Audio and 17.5 hours of video is taking up less than half of that.
I go through the different tabs in iTunes to see what's on my iPod, but it seems like it would all fall under either music or video (I had about 20 photos, but I stopped synching those up until I solve this mystery). What on earth could the "Other" be? As far as I know, that's all I've loaded on this thing is music and videos. I want to reclaim that space!

I have the same issue. I know a restore will fix it, but I want to know what is actually taking up that space and why.
Any ideas why gigs of space are taken up by "other", gigs of space which could be used for media?
Apple, any answers or a fix here?

  • Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.

Ok, What is all this "other" taking up space on my iphone and how do I get rid of it? It's taking up almost half the space on my phone.

"Other" includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It should normally be about 1 GB.  Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.
Unfortunately the best solution to fix your issue is a restore. Back up your phone, then restore it using iTunes.  Follow this guide:http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

  • What is the yellow, "other" category which is taking up 1.90gb of space?

    Hi there,
    I have a 6g nano, 16gb.
In iTunes I can see that out of the 14.98gb capacity, 12.4gb is audio, 0.75gb is free, and 1.90gb is "other". It shows up as yellow in the bar down the bottom in the capacity window.
My question is: what does "other" consist of?
I don't sync any photos, I don't sync any iTunes U. I don't have "enable disk use" checked, and I never have.
Anything I try to transfer off the ipod (eg podcasts, music, even audio books) decreases the audio content, but not the "other". So, what IS taking up 1.90gb of space on my nano?

How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • 'Other' taking unusual space in my iPhone 4s

Recently i erased all content and settings on my iPhone 4s and set up it as a new phone because it had taken more than 1.4 GB of space for 'other' category according to iTunes. But after the set up process (As a new phone) i noticed that it's taking more than 400MB of space for 'other'. I have iOS 7.0.6. Is it possible to erase all 'other' data from the iPhone or at least reduce it, it kinda bugs me now. Thanks in advanced for any help.

Generally, anything under 2 GB is considered the normal amount of "other". You cannot eliminate it. It is the basic data needed for the built in apps. If it goes over 2 GB, it usually indicates corrupted data and the only way to fix that is to do a restore through iTunes then reload your most recent backup.

  • Other taking up space with a brand new iPhone

other taking up space with a brand new iPhone, never used or plugged in. 1st time conecting and it says 564.8mb other. WTH??

I'm sorry, I don't understand your comment. Any computer program has at least 2 divisions. A Code division and a Data division. When we talk about the size of a program or operating system we mean the size of the Code division. The Data division will be of variable size, and can change dynamically. So the size of iOS when you download it is the size of the code. Other includes the data division of iOS, plus the data divisions of all apps that come bundled with iOS, plus the Safari cache, plus all email messages, plus all texts, plus all contacts, plus all calender events, plus all notes, plus all reminders, plus the music catalog, plus album art, plus data used by the iTunes & App stores, plus data used by the Genius feature, pus data used by Game Center, plus data used by Apple Maps (but not Google maps if you have it), plus a few things I've probably forgotten about.
Immediately after a new phone is activated, or after it is restored as new, Other still contains the data divisions of iOS. And if you have logged in to the iTunes and App stores during setup it contains the information from your account for those apps. And if you have logged in to iCloud it contains all of your iCloud contacts, calendar events, notes, reminders and email.
I've explained this several different ways. I'm not going to try again.

  • On my iPhone summary there is over 10GB of "other" taking up space on my phone. Why is this even there if I have an unused 20GB of iCloud?

I don't know what the data is that in in the "other" category or how to move it off of my phone but it is taking up almost all my space. What do I do? I have all possible things stored on iCloud, or so I believe.

Other includes data such as iPhone settings, contacts, calendar events, Safari bookmarks/cache/cookies, email and email attachments, SMS/MMS/iMessages, notes, app data, Safari cache, cookies and bookmarks, stored passwords, search index, home screen organization, wi-fi network data, etc.  It should normally be about 1 GB.  Yours in an indication there may be corrupt data on your phone.  To fix this, back it up, then restore it using iTunes.  Follow this guide: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414.

  • Over 6 gig of space being taking up by emails

After purchasing the new 5S, my two email acounts download over 10,000 emails.  I subsequestly deleted 95% of them from the inbox and the trash and junk folders.  However, my phone still says I have 6 gig of space being used for emails even though there are only about 100 emails for both accounts.  No pictures either.  I even reset one of the accounts to delete the emails off the server when deleted from the inbox, and changed the setting in Outlook to remove from server when deleted from deleted folder... but according to the iphone, I still have 6 gig of space being used for emails.  Any suggestions as this is overly using my memory on the iphone.

Thanks for your suggestions.......FYI........I turned off the features that are connected to the iCloud and miraculously got over 2 gig back. Guess that answers the question. I do not restore my phone unless absolutely necessary. I didn't always use the cloud so i thought maybe turning it on had caused the space problem and it was. Haven't connected to itunes yet to see if "other" has gone down but I'm sure it has.

  • When looking at "All My Files" Other category has 110 gigs?

I am attempting to clear out items from my iMac for Mountain Lion. When looking at the "All My Files" section, its says that 110 gigs of my hard drive is used by "Other".  I have no idea what could be taking up all of that space.  I used to use Time Machine but shouldn't those backups just be on the external HD?

Part of other is going to be OS X itself which could be about 10-20GB. To find out what else is stored there you may need a tool such as Disk Inventory X. You can Google it to locate it.

  • How can you retrieve information from a iCloud backup on a previous iPhone? Backup from old phone is taking up a lot of space, would like to save pics to computer before deleting. How can I open up the backup from previous phone that is now on the iCloud?

I originally had an iPhone 4 but switched service carriers back in June.  When I bought the new iPhone 4s, all my information from the iPhone 4 was saved as a backup on the iCloud.  On my new phone in the iCloud settings, Storage & Backup, it shows the backup from the iPhone 4.  This backup is taking up a lot of space on my phone and I would like to delete to avoid having to purchase more space.  However, I know I have pictures on this backup from the iPhone 4 that I would like to view and save on my computer if at all possible before deleting.  Is it possible to view the photos from this backup? If so, how? Thank you in advance for any assistance.  I hope this makes sense, lol, I'm not very computer literate.

Unfortunately with the issues I mentioned above I don't even think I have enough space for that on the computer!  I have literally moved all moy pictures, music, etc. to another drive and all that's left are some small docs and applications.  I don't know how to find any more space on the thing and can't get things updated until I fix this...
