Other web browsers and security issues?

Since even an Apple KB article recognizes the need for an additional browser and because of Safari's limitations and problems, I'm going to try switching to another browser (most likely OmniWeb and am looking at Firefox, Shira and Opera also though perhaps not as a primary browser) but I'm wondering about their ability to keep on top of any security issues for Mac? (and how do you keep up with security updates?)
Though perhaps unfounded, at least with Safari, I feel that Apple has a vested interest in keeping on top of security issues (for Safari and Java) and I can readily find out about security updates via software updater.

Most of the other Mac browsers have their adherents. They are all good browsers (I have 7 browsers installed to test various web sites and for change-of-pace usage). They all have their strengths and they all have their weaknesses. Only iCab and OmniWeb are still shareware, the rest are now or always have been free (Opera just recently stopped charging for its browser).
I have settled on Firefox as my alternate browser and I use it maybe just a tad more than Safari, but I do switch back and forth between them. The Mozilla foundation is good at getting security updates out when needed. Firefox has a button on the toolbar to check for updates. One nice thing about Firefox is that you can install free extensions which enhance the features available. I have one to supplement tab features, one to control iTunes from Firefox's status bar, one to help me format messages in discussion forums, and one to block ads.
I prefer OmniWeb for doing intensive research because of the way it handles tabs in its sidebar, showing me which ones I've looked at and which ones I haven't, and giving me great flexibility in rearranging tabs, which are viewable as thumbnails or text names (I have had up to a hundred or so tabs open in OmniWeb.
Shiira is good and its fast. I have not checked for updates for a while, but the last time I updated there was still a problem with Shiira kicking you out of logged-in sites when you moved from page to page with in web site. This may have been fixed by now - they were aware of the problem back then.
Camino is a native OS X cousin of Firefox and is also fast, but is not updated as often.
I would stay away from Mozilla or Netscape unless you need all the additional modules they have and which take up hard disk space. Firefox and Camino represent the browser module of Mozilla/Netscape. Mozilla and Netscape have modules for email, irc chat, newsgroups, and for creating and editing web pages. Netscape is a branded and slightly customized version of Mozilla and is not updated as often.
Opera is a nice browser and some use it as their main browser, but I have not seen anything that really stands out for me, but that does not mean it is not worth a look.
I would stay away from abandonware Internet Explorer.
As for checking for updates, several of them, as with many Mac programs, now have a menu item that allows you to check for updates. Most of them also announce their updates on both VersionTracker and MacUpdate.
Happy Exploring.

Any website I try to visit using Firefox won't load, it just keeps saying that it is unable to connect. I tried other web browsers, and they work no problem. I tried following the proxy steps provided, but did not help.

Did you check your security software (firewall)?
A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

If you use a Firefox 4 beta release then you should create a new profile exclusively for the 4.0 beta version and create a desktop shortcut with -P "profile" appended to the target to launch that profile.

  • Firefox started crashing a week ago and now I can't type in a foreign language (Korean) when I can on other web browsers like IE or chrome..help!

The language bar is working just fine. And, I can see that the setting has changed to the other language but it just won't type in firefox. It keeps typing in English. It works in word or other web browsers, so I'm assuming this only happens in firefox. So, then, what is the issue?

In Firefox 3.6 on Windows you can hide the menu bar via "View > Toolbars" or via the right click context menu on a toolbar.
Press and hold the Alt key down to bring up the menu bar.
Go to "View > Toolbars" or right-click the menu bar or press Alt+V T to select which toolbars to show or hide.

  • Juno and Yahoo Webmail: Firefox makes the attach file button in webmail disappear and other web browsers don't

Using Juno and Yahoo webmail (only on this computer, not my others) the attach file button loads but then disappears when creating a new email or replying. All other web browsers allow me to attach files using these two webmail sites. This does not affect other sites like school applications to upload files for class in Firefox.

As mentioned in the original post, the user IS the owner and the permissions are WIDE open for the user. I have also tried to disable the anti-virus - no luck. The problem is ONLY happening in Firefox. Chrome and IE work perfect. There is also no problem in Windows. The user can add/remove/edit files in the directory. Right now the solution seems to be to use Chrome. I'm not excited about that, but at this point, the only option.

If possible, connect to your router with Ethernet and turn off Wi-Fi. Any difference?

  • File attachment in yahoo mail does not appeare in Firefox 4, but IE & other web browsers show correctly.

Before I install Firefox 4, I have been use Firefox 3.6 and when I was checking my yahoo mail, there was not any problem to view or download file attachment.
After installing Firefox 4, when I receive a new mail with file attachment, like as video, or document, I can not see the attachment to download it. but with other web browsers like IE, I can see the attachment of the email.

    Hi!
People using a Trend Micro virus scanner should disable some webmail function. You can find the solution [http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-33677-can-t-download-attachments-on-my-yahoo-email here]
I do not use Trend Micro, but have the same issues. I just found my "AdBlock Plus" add-on was stopping the attachment download. What you should do to see if this is your problem too: disable AdBlock Plus, restart firefox and see if your problem is solved. Now enable AdBlock Plus again and restart Firefox.
To fix this problem: In Firefox, click on Add-ons, go to AdBlock Plus, go to Options, click on Filters--> reset statistics. Go to your attachment, click on the attachment (it will fail to download of course). Go back to AdBlock Plus and sort the statistics for "Hits". Now you can see which filter is blocking your attachment download. Disable this filter and you problem is solved!
    Regards!

When I navigate web with Firefox my Thinkpad trackpoint center button is not working. With other web browsers it works well. Where is the problem in firefox, how to enable TrackPoint center button?

I have exactly the same settings in Options (in both computers)
for history, these 2 add-ons and all other stuff in Options. The only difference is that on 1 pc sessions can be saved and closed tabs can be reopened, on other main pc they stopped to work. + no any other add-on that does similar things works on this pc.
It is also interesting that I can reopen closed visited sites from History Panel, but not by pressing the Button. For now I only manually bookmark links to a temporary folder.
Recently (some 2 month ago) I pressed x and Firefox closed all tabs without saving them without displaying save & quit pop up.
    so I changed 4 settings in about.config
    browser.tabs.warn on close true
    browser.warn on quit true
    browser.warn on restart true
    browser.show.quit warning true
but the problem with sessions appeared only 1 week ago.
So I guess the problem is not with the History settings or other settings. Seems that something responsible for button or for storing info about tabs/sessions got corrupted. :(

  • Safari compared to other web browsers

I'm relatively new at the computer game and have received some great
    advice at this site.
I many of the discussions, other web browsers are mentioned and today Firefox has released a new beta version. At least at this point I am relatively happy with Safari (although I do have to quit at times to get the page I want).
Could some of you with more experience tell me the major advantages of other browsers such as Firefox and if I should try them out??--Or should I just stick with Safari until I gain more experience?
    Thanks

Safari is an excellent browser, but it does have its quirks (as do all browsers). Ninety-eight percent of the sites I visit work fine with Safari, including the particular banking sites I use. Other people have more problems. Everybody has problems with web sites built with Windows-only technologies, regardless of which Mac browser they are using.
There are several people who have their favorite non-Safari browser. Firefox, Opera, OmniWeb, and iCab all rank high on this list. They are also all very good browsers and each have their strong and weak points.
If you are brand new to computing, you might want to stick with Safari until you are comfortable using the Internet. If you run up against a site that Safari chokes on you could then try an alternate browser.
Once you are comfortable with Safari and if you want to try out other browsers, download them one at a time and use them as your main browser for a while to get a feel for them, then try a different one if you like.
I switch back and forth between Safari and Firefox myself, but I have several browsers installed so I can see how different web sites appear in different browsers.
And don't be afraid to ask questions about how - or can - I do this or that. There are lots of people here willing to help you out.

  • On bbc.co.uk website I am unable to set my local / postcode, although I used to be able to do this and can with other web browsers. Am unsure how to re set this so it works.

I normally use Firefox as my preferred browser, and have bbc.co.uk as one of my home pages. I used to be able to set my location 'portsmouth' on that web page top receive local news. However, I can no longer do that (Ithink i cleared cache and browsing history recently) and since then it cannot set my location.
Other web bro0wsers are working fine with this, but I wold rather use Firefox.
What vsetting do I need to change?

I am using MAC OSx 10.5.8 (9L31a) as my operation system.  The TV says "No signal.  Check connected device's power, cable connection and source selection."  Seems to me that that goes in hand with what the Samsung tech said about the Mac needing to be forces to use the external display.  But how do I do that?

  • Query By Example and security issues

    HI,
I have started looking at security issues in our ADF application.
Is the default implementation of Query By Example (QBE) on a table safe from Cross Site Scripting and SQL Injection?
In other words, can a user enter some value in a QBE input field that can either:
    - execute a malicious script (CSS)
    Or
    - somehow change the underlying will change the SQL query
I am more worried about SQL Injection as QBE takes input from a web user, and makes a corresponding SQL query to the database.
Are there any ways to prevent any of these?
    Thanks

    Timo thanks for your answer.
So far I am confident on the following (based on responses and other reading):
    1) default implementation of Query By Example (QBE) (e.g. search fields) is "safe /safer" from/on SQL injection issues.
    2) User entered data  via non QBE fields (I assume this is "For other input text you" Timo mentions) should by checked against special characters (> < etc) to "prevent " cross side scripting.
However, should I do 2) for QBE filters on alphanumeric columns (default implementation) ? I can do it, but if I do it I would loose some searching functionality
as >, < are valid wildcard characters.
    Thanks

  • Firefox 5 opens mutiple web browsers and does not display homepage-white page only

I use windows 7 starter. When I start Firefox 5 it keeps opening firefox web browsers, up to 50 at a time. I did try the sugestions in the help area of firefox, but it still happens. The browser also opens on a white page with nothing on it. I was asked to upgrade to firefox 6 but I refused becuase I use NoDoFollow and seoquake and the system said that those adons are not compatible with firefox6.

It is possible that there is a problem with the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
Delete the files sessionstore.js [2] and sessionstore.bak in the Firefox Profile Folder.
    * Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Open Containing Folder
    * http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox
If you see files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js then delete those as well.<br />
Deleting sessionstore.js will cause App Tabs and Tab Groups and open and closed (undo) tabs to get lost, so you will have to create them again (make a note or bookmark them).

  • Journaling and Security Issues

I am adding a 750GB external HD to my system as a scratch disc and as a backup for my files. I plan to use PGP to protect sensitive data on the drive. If I enable journaling, won't this create a copy of the data that is not protected? Is it best to keep journaling off to protect sensitive files?
And, if journaling is enabled, how large is the journal and how long does the data remain in the journal? Is there any way to wipe that data after a while or is it constantly replaced with new data?
Finally, is it more likely that a drive will fail without journaling turned on as implied by some of the Apple documentation?
    Thanks for your input.

Depending on what program you are using, in most cases the performance will be better leaving the scratch space on the internal drive.
That's not quite how Journaling works. It's not a backup of files but rather a log of changes made to the volume directory. This is how Apple explains it: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107249
No. Journaling shouldn't have any affect on a drives physical attributes but it does help prevent directory corruption.
Now Time Machine on the other hand does pose a security issue.

  • At a hotel, can see 3 other Macs in Finder - Security Issue??

I'm at a hotel that has wi-fi and am connected to the internets. In Finder, I can see 3 other Macs under Shared. Why are these appearing?? File and Printer Sharing were checked in System Preference (they are for home use). I unchecked File Sharing but could still see the other computers. One of them displayed as connected (VPN).
What are the security issues here? Is it normal to "see" other Macs this way? Does this mean someone was snooping around my files? How can I prevent this? Please advise and thanks.
    Message was edited by: xtrailer

If you don't want to share anything with others while in Public spaces then uncheck File Sharing options.
It sounds like they are allowing others to share/see their Mac's but that's no worry for you

  • 802.1x multipoint authenticator and security issue

    Hi everybody
Let say we have following set up:
    host1
    host2   ) ----------------hub------ f1/0-switch( authenticator)-------------------------Radius server.
    host3
The switch is configured as follows.
    Switch(config)#interface FastEthernet 1/0
    Switch(config-if)#dot1x port-control auto
    Switch(config-if)#dot1x host-mode multi-host
Let  say only host1 has valid credentials and the rest hosts i.e h2,h3 are  rogue hosts.  host1 sends authentication request and successfully  authenticated and switch transition its port to an authorized state.  But does it not mean  the other hosts h2 and h3 which were not  authenticated but yet are able to access network ?
thanks and have a great weekend.

This board is more for Wireless Security not LAN. but I would think it's because you are connecting through a hub instead of a switch. Hubs share the data, so when the switch gets the auth for the valid client it turns that port as it should.
Now an invalid client connects and because the port is already thinking the client is valid, it passes all the traffic.
    Make sense?
