Other wireless routers

my airport extreme went dead in less than 2 years. I want to get another wireless router that doesn't cost as much this time seeing as the airport doesn't have any more of a warranty as any other product.
What other wireless routers are out there, and am I able to hook a printer up to it and print from both my mac and my husband's 2 PCs?

so to clarify, there are no wireless routers out there that will allow you to connect a USB printer to them so you can use them from all the wireless computers in your network?
I'm sure there are a few out there, but I don't know of any off-hand that I could recommend. On the other hand, as I originally replied, an alternative is to use a wireless print server, like the Linksys WPS54GU2. You would connect your USB printer to this device, and, in turn, this device would connect to wireless network.

  • I have a macbook air that is not connecting to the internet correctly.  I've had it connected for three weeks, it went into sleep mode, and will not reconnect.  It will connect to other wireless routers (I've tested it) but not the one at my apartment.

The problem is not happening with any other device that I have.  My iPad, iPhone and another laptop all connect fine.  In fact, it's not even the connection.  The computer will connect to the net.  It just will not open any page.  It starts to open and then hangs and hangs.  It will not move.  Weird since it worked great for three weeks and then all of the sudden, nothing.  Click on Safari and I have short hope that it will move and NOTHING!  Any thoughts why it would hang up like this and only with this specific network?

This is a known Lion issue, hopefully solved in 10.7.3. But may not be solved immediatly after updating, that was my case.
To make it work i followed those steps.
    1.- Restart
    2.- Lion 10.7.2 Update
    3.- Uninstall netwokrs
    4.- Shut down
    5.- SMC reset
    6.- Reinstall networks
I dont know whether all the above steps are necessary, but for me the update didn't work properly before SMC reset. (I am running a MBA mid2011)
    Hope it helps,

  • AirPort Express vs. 3rd Party Wireless Routers

    I'm confused!
The AirPort Express is just a wireless router, right. What is the benefit of the unit over other wireless routers?
I am basically trying to find the cheapest way to connect wireless to a DSL modem.
I have always used standard dialup and am looking into High Speed DSL service.

Your not confused, Airport Express, and Airport Extreme both are Wireless Base Stations.
If you are looking for the cheapest way it probably won't be using Apple products.
But on the other hand if you are looking for ease of set-up and reliability, and if you will READ THE BOOKLET that accompanies either one them, then you will be more than satisfied with Apple Products.
I realize that Dial-up,, sometimes is the only choice.
But using DSL, or Cable is like trying to comparing a Turtle to a Cheeta.
Reliability, Speed is so much better, depending on your Internet Service Provider.
I suggest, if you are hung on cheapest, go to your local computer store and talk to one of the associates. I fear you might be overwhelmed by the myrid of choices. All Manufactures have good products it really boils down to what exactly it is you are trying to do.
Not all Stream Music as well as other features that Apple does. Have a look at these 2 links.

    And

    Good Luck with your choice.

  • After a Windows 8.1 automatic update yesterday my other wireless devices like smart phones, tablets, etc can't use my routers wireless signal unless my laptop is turned on

Hi guys, please help, I'm desperate.
After an automatic update to my windows 8.1 yesterday none of my other other wireless devices like smart phones, tablets, etc. can join my wireless network unless my laptop is turned on.  If I turn my laptop off, after a couple of minutes my iphone,
my wife's iphone  and my Galaxy Tab lose connection and are unable to join my router's network. When I turn my laptop back on, all the other devices are able to use my router's wireless internet without any problems.  How can I fix this???
    Thanks.

    Hi,
First, I suggest to reset the router, meanwhile disable the network card and enable it again, because it is obviously network issue.
Then, as you post this happened after windows update, try to find the update that was already installed on your computer
Restore your computer by following the way listed below:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/restore-refresh-reset-pc
Hide the  update if it is not an important one and related to wireless internet according to this article:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/ff382716.aspx
I hope it works for you .

Linksys wireless routers have many configurations, i would like to know how to do everything on these wireless routers...where can i get a full tutorial about every function, setting and everything there is to know about these wireless routers??? Thanks

As per my knowledge there is not one complete tutorial for how to configure wireless settings in the router .....
But one thing you can do is to log in to http://linksys.com/kb ...... it provides all the information related to all products of Linksys ......
Just type the Model number of the router you want to know about ....& it shows different answers .....
Give it a try .... & see it is helpful or not .....

  • I have 1 Internet Connection and I need to hook 2 wireless routers help.

I have one internet connection.  I need to use 2 wireless routers.  What model of linksys router should I purchase and how should I hook them so we can use both at the same time.

Remember that both wireless routers will not communicate wirelessly you will have to connect both the router's together with Ethernet Cables...
What will be the approximate distance between both the routers ?
Do you wish to establish communication between the computers connected to Router 1 and computers connected to Router 2 ?
Do you wish to have a separate network for both the router's ? Look at this link
You can go with Wireless - N draft Router's(WRT310N, WRT320N, WRT350N, WRT400N, WRT600N etc) as they will give you a good range to connect to a distant wireless clients...

  • Connecting two WRT54G wireless routers - how to configure

    Hi All,
I have two WRT54G wireless routers. One is currently providing wireless access for several users at a local law firm. I need to connect a second wireless router for a user who works for another company in the same office. The second wireless router is basically going to be used for Internet access. The Office Manager at the law office does not want the user from the other company using their wireless router directly, BUT they will allow me to hook up the second wireless router for Internet access. I realize this doesn't really make sense in terms of security, but this is the scenario I must abide to. So I am wondering how to configure the second router. I am thinking that I connect a CAT5 from one port on the first router to the Internet port on the second router. I am also guessing that I need to assign the the second router a static IP with a different subnet such as 192.168.2.1. I am not sure if the first router still has the default 192.168.1.1. If the first router does use 192.168.1.1 would I need to change the IP on the second one to one on another subnet? Thanks.

You will need a setup like this:
    Modem  ---  new WRT54G  ----  existing WRT54G
                     192.168.2.1              192.168.1.1    ( "Local IP address" )
Modem connects to Internet port of new WRT54G.
LAN port of new WRT54G connects to Internet port on existing WRT54G.
SSID:  different on each router  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  enabled on both routers
encryption:  recommend WPA2, or at least WPA  (can be same or different on the two routers).
    passwords:   different on each router.
channel:  try to stay at least 5 channels apart.  Usually channel 1, 6, and 11 work best, but any two different channels can be used.
Any "port forwarding" used by existing WRT54G must also be done on new WRT54G.
Both routers need a real login password (not "admin" )
New WRT54G will need "Intenet connection type" set to whatever is currently on existing WRT54G.  Internet connection type for existing WRT54G will need to be set to DHCP.

  • Wireless routers on only 80211b or g instead of mixed as fix to connection

I posted before that setting an Airport Extreme base station to run only on 802.11b or only on 802.11g instead of mixed b/g fixed many connection issues on my MacBook Pro. Well, it seems it is also a fix with other routers. I just tried it on two Lynksys and Netgear wireless routers and now connection is perfect.
Can anyone please confirm if this works for them?

I forgot to include the link to the original post. Here it is:

  • Reset password for Wireless routers

How to reset the password for wireless routers? Do I re-setup again? I lost my CD and manual, what can i do?

Hold the reset button on the router for 15 seconds and the router will be restored to factory defaults setting.
Then type the router's IP 192.168.1.1 in your IE address bar and hit the Enter key, you will receive a login promot, you will leave the username field blank and type admin in the password field to gain entry.

  • Third party wireless routers incompatible with PowerBook airport

Hello there. I'm not having success with my problem so I thought I'd ask if anyone knows anything about incompatible wireless routers. In Mac help under Airport there is a curious statement that some hardware may be incompatible with Airport. As I travel through Chile, I have encountered several public Wi Fi hotspots to which I am unable to connect. I have all the TCP/IP settings entered correctly (IP address, router address, DNS, sub-net mask, everything) yet still unable to connect, including the Wi Fi at my hotel. They have provided me with all the necessary information, entered in the TCP/IP tab in the Network prefs pane, yet still unable to connect. DHCP this is not. I have never encountered this anywhere. I suspect the wireless hardware they use will not communicate with an Apple product. Could this be true? Has anyone run into this?
    Thank you,
    Michael

Thanks for your help. I tried all the encryption methods using the password given to me by the hotel and the coffee shops. Wi Fi appeared to be a complete mystery to them, although they seemed to have enough of a clue to suspect the encryption to be WEP. (Wi Fi has only recently arrived to Punta Arenas). I tried all the WEP and LEAP and any WPA, although some of the WPA methods wouldn't accept the password (the "OK" button was grayed out). It's got me stumped.
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Adding Wireless Routers

I have been using a WCG200 modem/router on a home network for some time with no problems.  I'm trying to add a WRT54G router  to the network, so I can add a printer to the network.  So far i cannot make this work.  Does anybody have any experience with this?

You don't want a router. You want a wireless access point. You have wireless routers which you don't want to use as routers but only as access points. A router by definition routes traffic between multiple subnets connected to different interfaces (WAN and LAN). That kind of configuration is not what the WRT is built for and that's why support tells you it's a not a standard configuration for a WRT.
You can use a WRT like a simple access point.
Reconfigure the router through its web inteface. Wire a computer to the router first.
    1. Set the LAN IP address to a free IP address in the existing network.
    2. Make sure NOT to set a static IP on the internet connection type.
    3. On the main setup page disable the DHCP server.
    4. Now save settings. You'll loose the connection.
    5. Unplug the computer and wire one of the numbered LAN ports to your existing network.
Now you can access the web interface of the WRT on the new LAN IP address. Everything wired to the remaining 3 LAN ports and everything connected wireless has direct access to the network.

  • Will Linksys wireless routers be updated to the final 802.11n spec when its finished?

Will Linksys wireless routers be updated to the final 802.11n spec when its finished? I read that most can be updated to the final spec with a firmware update.

I can't see why they wouldn't be. There'd be a whole lot of people upset if they didn't...

  • Linking 2 wrt300n wireless routers??

I need help in linking two wrt300n linksys wireless routers.  I am setting up a retreat center with two wings 180 feet long.  One router will not reach the length of the building.  I am able to make connection with one router but the other router will not allow internet connection.  Can anyone help me?
    Dennis

With the equipment you have, the only way to "link" them together is by ethernet cable.  You cannot link them wirelessly.
The WRT300N that is connected to your modem will be your primary router.  The other WRT300N will need to be converted to a WAP (wireless access point).
For instructions on how to do that, see my post at:
    http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wired_Routers&message.id=14774&query.id=175...
The instructions are the same for your setup, except the "wired" router in the instructions is the same as your primary router.
Also note that with two wireless routers, you will need to set them as follows:
SSID:  same on both  (do not use "linksys" )
SSID broadcast:  both set to enabled
    encyption method:  same on both
    encryption key: same on both
channel:  set each router to a different channel.  You can use any two channels, but ideally they should be at least 5 channels apart.  Channels 1, 6, and 11 usually work best.

  • One cable modem tow wireless routers in my house --- is this possible?

I'd like to use two wireless routers to fully cover my house with wireless access. I have a WRT5462 v1 wireless router that I connected directly to the cable modem, and then  connected a second wireless router to one of the CAT 5 ports in the first, with the CAT 5 going into the "Internet" port in the second, which is a WRT610N v1. The first router works fine, but the second does not provide internet connectivity to the devices that connect to it.
I suspect I need to make modifications to the Internet Connection Type in the Basic Wireless Configuration - I changed from DHCP to a Static IP of 192.168.1.2, but this didn't work.  Any help and direction greatly appreciated
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thank you very much for you response. Done the set-up as you described, with 1 exception: The WRT54G2 v1 doesn't allow me to reserve an IP address in the DHCP Server settings section. Therefore, I set up its Network as 192.168.1.2-192.168.1.49
That said, the 2nd router is set up with that IP address, and I can connect to it both vie Ethernet and wireless, and it is supplying IP addresses via its DHCP server address accordingly. However, no access to the Internet (via the first router).
Now, when I set up router 2 as a static IP, I'm asked to enter an "Internet IP Address", which I've specified as the 192.168.1.2 as you indicated. I'm then required to enter a subnet mask and default gateway, and then DNS 1, DNS2 (Optional), DNS3 (Optional)
Not knowing what I should enter here, I entered 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask, and 192.168.1.1 (address of the first router) as default gateway.
Any suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?
