Other Wireless Systems in area???

A while ago I got a new iMac G5 with Airport Express and iSight and the whole sha-bang. Love it. I noticed that sometimes the icon which evidently reflects the amount of connectivity power. If I click on this icon, there is always one which is checked, Apple3467 (something like that) and at times there are two or three other choices with names like "belkin24" or "linsys". I tried changing my "check" mark and I assume I hooked to another connection.
I called Apple, who were most helpful, and walked me through changes in my settings to prevent others from accessing my connection/service - Thank You Very Much!!!
My questions are:
Is there anything else I should do to secure my system from nearby wireless users?
If I were to connect to one of the available other systems listed on my iMac, can that user know I am connected? Would that enable that other user accesst o my computer even though I have my settings set to prevent that?
If another one of those connections happens to be operating at a faster speed at any one time, is there any reason why I should not use that connection?
Thanks so much - looking forward to any suggestions and/or advice from all you WiseMacs - Mike

Is there anything else I should do to secure my
system from nearby wireless users?
Make sure your account is protected by a good password (long, a mix of letters, numbers, and special symbols). Protect your network with WPA encryption; In the System Preferences/Sharing panel uncheck any services that you do not know you need (the computer will tell you if it needs a service that you have disabled); turn on firewall.
If I were to connect to one of the available other
systems listed on my iMac, can that user know I am
connected?
Yes, if they look. The routers do display every computer that's connected to the network. But if they don't look for that they may not notice.
Would that enable that other user accesst
o my computer even though I have my settings set to
prevent that?
Depending on what services you are running in the Sharing control panel, it can be possible, but is not trivial. The choice of your user account password makes a big difference. Also if you have an uprotected guest account they could log into that.
If another one of those connections happens to be
operating at a faster speed at any one time, is there
any reason why I should not use that connection?
Formally speaking, you would be stealing the bandwidth that you didn't pay for. There is an opinion that anyone who has not protected their network with a password does not mind unauthorized connections, but I personally do not subscribe to that opinion.
If their connection works faster for you, you can try to find out who they are and ask to share the connection and split the cost.
Also, being on someone else's network, you expose your computer to attacks from that direction. Whether they will try to attack - nobody will be able to tell.

  • Will airport extreme card work on other wireless systems

will airport extreme card work with other networking systems such as time warner cable with a router?

Note, Airport Extreme on PowerMacs is limited to 802.11g.  If you find you get a router that is 802.11n, and have devices that need 802.11n speed, they should be on a different wireless network.  Otherwise you can set the network to be 802.11n and 802.11g for both 'n' and 'g' devices to hook up to it from the router in question.  Be sure the PowerMac in question does support Extreme, and not just the original Airport by visiting this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1621
And identifying your Mac in this article:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3082
If you can't find your Mac on the article, go to Apple menu -> About This Mac and tell us the Machine ID. If it is a notebook, the name of the machine is on the screen frame. If it is a machine with a display and a built-in optical drive that has no name, it may be an iMac.  That is significant as well.  Since you posted in the PowerMac forum, without telling us your machine, we can't help you further until you do.

  • Compatibility between ECC 6.0 EHP4/NW 7.01 and other NW system

Our system landscape consists of ECC 6.0 EHP3 SPS 03 /NW 7.00 SPS 17 (Dual stack) and other Netweaver system like BI, GTS, Portal 7.0 SPS 17. We are thinking of upgrading ECC 6.0 only to EHP4 SPS08.  Will it lead to any compatbility issues with other netweaver system? are there any dependencies? Do we also need to upgrade our BI, GTS and Portal system ?
    Thank you
    Dhirendra

Thanks Sunny for the info. I checked  with upgrade dependency tool and it did not find any dependency.
However, according to note 1297231, SAP NW 7.0 should be at SP 22 to be compatible with EHP
6.0 EHP 4 SP08. Note 1165438 references 'hub' and 'sidecar' systems. In this case, do we need to update our "hub" and "sidecar" (BI, Portal, xRPM) systems to be at Netweaver 7.0 SP22 so that "thereby both
applications are synchronous?" The notes are not clear.
Do we need to patch our Portal, BI, and xRPM (currently at NW7.0 SP17) systems to NW7.0 SP22 as per the above notes?"

  • The cruise ship which we are traveling says that safari browser does to work on their wireless system and that Firefox should be downloaded to act as the browser. Is this possible on an ipad2?

Is there a Firefox browser that can be downloaded to my ipad2?

Sorry, Mozilla doesn't make a version of Firefox for iOS. Apple's SDK requirements are too strict.
Find out if that wireless system supports Opera, which does have a version for iOS, used on the iPhone and iPad.

See if the iPad will accept the password after you restart it. It's worth a try.
Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
You could also try a reset as well.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

I have 10.6 8 Snow Leopard and trying to download yosemite by it keeps failing.  Are there other operating systems in between that need to be installed first?

Before embarking on a major OS upgrade, it would be wise, advisable and very prudent if you backup your current system to an external connected and Mac formatted Flash drive OR externally connected USB, Thunderbolt or FireWire 800, Mac formatted hard drive. Then, use either OS X Time Machine app to backup your entire system to the external drive OR purchase, install and use a data cloning app, like CarbonCopyCloner or SuperDuper, to make an exact and bootable copy (clone) of your entire Mac's internal hard drive. This step is really needed in case something goes wrong with the install of the new OS or you simply do not like the new OS, you have a very easy way/procedure to return your Mac to its former working state.
Then, determine if your Mac meets ALL minimum system install requirements.
To install OS X  10.8 Mountain Lion, 10.9 Mavericks (free upgrade, but currently unavailable) or OS X 10.10 Yosemite (currently available free upgrade) you need one of these Macs:
OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion purchased emailed download code here.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later),
    MacBook Pro (15-inch or 17-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    Your Mac also needs:
OS X Mountain Lion, Lion, or Snow Leopard v10.6.8 already installed
2 GB or more of memory (I strongly advise, at least, 4 GBs of RAM or more)
8 GB or more of available space
    Next,
If you run any older Mac software from the earlier PowerPC Macs, then none of this software will work with the newer OS X versions (10.7 and onward). OS X Snow Leopard had a magical and invisible PowerPC emulation application, called Rosetta, that worked seamlessly in the background that still allowed older PowerPC coded software to still operate in a Intel CPU Mac.
The use of Rosetta ended with OS X Snow Leopard as the Rosetta application was licensed to Apple, from a software company called Transitive, which got bought out, I believe, by IBM and Appe  could no longer secure their rights to continue to use Rosetta in later versions of OS X.
So, you would need to check to see if you have software on your Mac that maybe older than, say, 2006 or older.
Also, check for app compatibilty  here.
    http://roaringapps.com/
If you have any commercial antivirus installed and/or hard drive cleaning apps installed on your Mac, like MacKeeper, CleanMyMac, TuneUpMyMac, MacCleanse, etc. now would be a good time to completely uninstall this apps by doing a Google search to learn how to properly uninstall these types of apps.
These types of apps will only cause your Mac issues later after the install of the new OS X version and you will have to completely uninstall these types of apps later.
Once you have determined all of this, you should be able to find the latest versions of OS X by clicking on the Mac App Store icon in the OS X Dock and then login to the Mac App Store using your Apple ID and password and if you purchased a download code, input that code.
You can then begin the download and installation process of installing the newer versions of OS X from the Mac App Store.

  • TS1398 have been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any idea

my ipad 4 has been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • HT1695 i bought a used ipod touch and reset it to the factory settings via itunes and now i'm trying to set it up like new and it won't let me sign in with an apple id it says it can't connect to the server.  Other wireless devices are working HELP?!

I am trying to set up  my daughters ipod touch after resetting it to factory settings.  So I am trying to sign in using an apple id.  It says won't connect to the servier, but I have other wireless devices connected, so I know my wi fi is working. What now? Thanks

Return it and get a refund. Without the prior owner's Apple ID and password that device is useless. Find My iPhone Activation Lock- Removing a device from a previous owner’s account. You were screwed by the ignorance of the pawn shop owner.

  • How can I add additional airport expresses to my system that are not being recognized by Airport utility?

I recently purchased time capsule to upgrade my wireless system. I have 3 airport expresses in my network; I was able to reconfigure one, but the other 2 won't reconfigure.  They are not recognized by Airport utility after being reset; the time capsule and one reconfigured airport express shows up.  I would like to use the other two airport expresses to extend my wireless system. I would appreciate any help and suggestions.

Unfortunately, you will have to use Apple's WDS setting for all of the devices on the network....Time Capsule, new AirPort Express and older AirPort Express devices.
That is going to slow things down tremendously on the network.
WDS only operates at "g" wireless speed, so you lose any "n" speed advantage of your newer devices.
Worse, the bandwidth is cut in half on the entire network for each device that is set up as "relay" or "remote" on the system.
So, the first "remote" (or relay) cuts wireless speed from 54 Mbps down to 27 Mbps. The second cuts everything down to about 14 Mbps and the third drops everything down to about 7 Mpbs. That is much slower than the old wireless "b" systems.
Compare that to "n" speeds of 130 Mbps or up to 300 Mbps (if you are using 5 GHz) and you can easily see that you are losing more than 90% of the speed capability on the network.
Do you even want to consider doing this?

  • NB200 - Notifications in system tray area

Every few seconds I get an annoying pop-up notification in the system tray area that informs me of 'Blocked Events' These are all IPv4 TCP or UDP events. I'd really like to turn off these notifications but despite extensive internet searching I can't find out how to do this. I've tried the Action Centre and tried the obvious Firewall settings but nothing will stop them. I find them intensely annoying.
I have a NB200-12W running Windows 7 Home Prmium (a recent upgrade from Windows 7 Starter Edition). - the issue occurs under both versions. initially I used the installed McAfee security suite but uninstalled that and I'm using F-secure 2009 Internet Security suite for which I have a currently valid license.
The system is wirelessly connected to my BT Home hub router and is connected via the HomeGroup to two PCs. The other two computers are connected via ethernet cables to the router and both run on Windows 7 Home Premium with Avira internet security. I don't get the pop-ups on these machines.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
    AE

What program is generating the alerts - are you sure its f-secure or could it be the widows firewall or mcafee? I don't know anything about f-secure (other than I couldn't find a 2009 manual on their web site) but I would suggest that it will keep a log of events and that when you get close to the "option" that displays (and I would expect clears) it you will also find an option about displaying the event.
Re my comment about what program is generating it - are you happy that you have removed all traces of mcafee? Have you run msconfig and looked at the services and startup tabs for any trace? Also look in task manager for any traces : in the services tab click on description to sort and look for mcafee starting the description similar in the processes but I think you would only ever have had 1 mcafee entry.
I think this should have been the first para. Have you created/amended any firewall rules? The log file should give the ip address of the source event and is that in the range of ip addresses of your home network? and since you are bt internet customer do you have a bt vision pvr and is that the source?

  • My imac says wifi not configured all other devices in house are working please help

how can I reset the wifi card in my imac

If the wireless card or circuitry in the iMac appears in the hardware profile, then it exists
and could be used by the system; the configuration of Network in system preferences is
part of that. Also the AirPort setup to be able to find & use available wireless networks
    is usually not difficult.

    •Network configuration for Mac OS X 10.4:
    https://lapserv.maths.cam.ac.uk/docs/osx104.html
However, not knowing what iMac model build version or OS X system version your have
makes choosing how to reply to a general and vague question such as this. Since a Mac
does not run an iOS (an iDevice, not a Mac product, would use iOS system) what OS X
does your computer use? And if the hardware utilizes a core 2 duo or other Intel based
processor, then you don't have the vintage old iMac version this discussion area is about.
The answers change, depending on the hardware, since the later OS X versions do not
run on old hardware. So there is a gap between what you have, and what you said...
Even so, the general settings for Ethernet, Wi-Fi and other connections for networking
are in the system preferences; you can also choose to change options in there.
    Good luck & happy computing!

The wireless system has detected a possible intrusion attack by signature detection for a specific attacker. Immediate attention is required.
I'm trying to find more information on this and am wondering if this is a false/positive.
    Thanks for help in advance.

I would point more towards a false positive alert here.
NULL Probe Response - Zero length SSID element:
Some frames are permitted to carry a null (zero length) SSID, called a broadcast SSID. For example, a station can send a probe request that carries a broadcast SSID; the AP must return its actual SSID in the probe response. Some APs can be configured to send a zero-length broadcast SSID in beacon frames instead of sending their actual SSID. However, it is not possible to keep an SSID value secret, because the actual SSID (ESS name) is carried in several frames.
As far as how to modify the IDS sensor in the WLC:

Can't connect to the internet on a wireless system at school, but fine when I'm at home. All semester, there was no problem getting on the wireless system at school.  I had a problem, put in my school log-in and password and saved it in keychain.  Since, that time I have been unable to connect to the wireless system at school.  I delete this action out of "Keychain" and went to "Preferences" and deleted the "Keychain" action, but today at school I couldn't log in.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.  MacBook; OS 10.5.8

I think your best bet is to go to technical support at your school (hopefully you have one) and they will help you out. The only reason I can come up with as to why you are not getting wireless access is that your settings are wrong (need to turn airport on) or your computer is not registered into the university.
    Good luck.
