OTV as backup for primary DCI

Hello,
I am interesting if I can use OTV technology as backup DCI. I know that is not used in that case usually. But in my case I already have vPC as my primary DCI over dark fiber, and want to implement backup for it.
To achieve backup path over OTV network, same OTV site Vlan will be defined on both data center OTV devices, and OTV site VLAN will be extended over primary connection.
I have also attached simple picture of solution.
How do you think will it work ?

Thank you all for your contribution.
After testing and debugging I found that when they move their database from one server (server2) to another server (server1) the database still using the old name (server2) which you can findusing this script:
    SELECT @@SERVERNAME
so the replication can't retrieve information, unfortunately for me it is difficult to rename the server because it sis development server so they need to make analysis about side effects if we renamed it.

  • My iPhones gives me a message that I don't have enough storage to backup.  When I attempt to manage my storage it shows 1 backup for the phone I use and it's 5GB.  I have transferred all my photos to my computer hoping it would create storage but no good.

My iPHone tells me I don't have enough iCLoud storage.  When I manage my storage from Settings it shows 1 backup for my primary phone and it's 5GB.  I understand that is what Apple provides for free and I could upgrade but I don't want to upgrade.  I have transferred most all my photos to the computer and I have no music on my device.  And this was several weeks ago and I have attempted to backup since hoping it would create a new backup but no good.
I have even went in the backup and turned off Camera Roll since it's the largest but still no good.
If you have any suggestions other than upgrade your storage plan please help.
    Thanks

    Try deleting the old backup.
Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage, tap the device name and on the resulting screen, scroll down and tap on Delete Backup.

  • Oracle data guard configuration for primary and standby db_name

I am working on configuring an active data guard for one primary DB and one standby DB. I have a few questions:
    1. Can I use different db_name, db_unique_name and instance_name for primary and standby. For example: primary(db_name, db_unique_name and instance_name)=chicago. When I create standby DB with Rman backup and copy of pfile and control file from primary DB or use Grid control to create standby database. Oracle document or Grid control all keep standby db_name=chicago. Only make standby db_unique_name and instance_name=boston. Due to my application system condition, I want to make db_name=boston, not keep it as the same as primary=chicago. Is this valid configuration?
    2. In primary datafiles, application system generate datafile name like this: hr_chicago_01.dbf, fn_chicago_01.dbf. When I move datafiles to standby server, if I plan to use db_name=boston for standby DB, can I rename datafiles as
hr_boston_01.dbf, fn_boston_01.dbf? In this way, datafile name match up with db_name. but I will create standby log group and members on primary and standby identically. If in future switching over, DB will not have problems.
    3. If I don't use primary DB backup. Instead, I copy all datafiles, redo_log files (no control files) to standby. Then "alter database backup controlfile to trace" from promary and also " create pfile='/xxx/initSTANDBY.ora' from primary. Then modify init.ora and controlfile. Then run control.sql to bring standby DB up. After that, configure redo log shipping and apply with data guard or SQL. Is this a acceptable way to create physical standby DB?
Please advise your comments. Thanks in advance.

I want to make db_name=boston, not keep it as the same as primary=chicago. Is this valid configuration?NO. DB_NAME must be the same ("chicago") at both sites. The Standby will be using a different DB_UNIQUE_NAME (e.g. "boston") and can be using a different Instance name / SID (e.g. "boston").
can I rename datafiles Yes. The database file names can be changed.
If I don't use primary DB backup. Instead, I copy all datafiles, redo_log files (no control files) to standbyWhat is the difference between the first sentence (a backup of the primary) and the second sentence (a copy of the primary) ? A Copy is a backup.
Are you intending to differentiate between an RMAN Backup and a User-Managed (aka "scripted") backup ?
Normally, for DataGuard, tou can use non-RMAN methods to copy the database but there's no value add in this.
You'd still have to setup DataGuard ! (and I wonder if you'd have complications setting up Active DataGuard).
But remember that you MUST create the Standby controlfile from the Primary and copy it over to your Standby -- particularly as you are planning to use DataGuard. This is not created by 'alter database backup controlfile to trace' , but by 'ALTER DATABASE CREATE STANDBY CONTROLFILE AS 'filename''

There is request to take cold backup of primary & standby db , i am New to dataguard backups, Should i take backup of only primary db or both?

Yes apps owner is insisting to take cold backup of both db this weekend(they are patching apps), and here are the step i had in mind to do that to stop , primary & llogical standby dbs , take cold backups ( scripts, usermanaged backups, dont have rman there) & start the dbs.
    On standby db
    SQL > set numformat “999999999999999”
SQL > select newest_scn,applied_scn from dba_logstdby_progress ; (both should match)

SQL > alter system archive log current ; ( to make sure current transactions come thru)
check tail of alert log of standby to make sure these redologs shipped & mined

no archive/ backup is perfect, HD clones can be set to make incremental additions, same as time machine however, though they are more time involved in doing so.
See the + and - of all data backup/ archives below and "spread it around".... or the "dont put your eggs all in one basket" philosophy.

Data Storage Platforms; their Drawbacks & Advantages
#1. Time Machine / Time Capsule
    Drawbacks:
    1. Time Machine is not bootable, if your internal drive fails, you cannot access files or boot from TM directly from the dead computer.
    2. Time machine is controlled by complex software, and while you can delve into the TM backup database for specific file(s) extraction, this is not ideal or desirable.
    3. Time machine can and does have the potential for many error codes in which data corruption can occur and your important backup files may not be saved correctly, at all, or even damaged. This extra link of failure in placing software between your data and its recovery is a point of risk and failure. A HD clone is not subject to these errors.
    4. Time machine mirrors your internal HD, in which cases of data corruption, this corruption can immediately spread to the backup as the two are linked. TM is perpetually connected (or often) to your computer, and corruption spread to corruption, without isolation, which TM lacks (usually), migrating errors or corruption is either automatic or extremely easy to unwittingly do.
    5. Time Machine does not keep endless copies of changed or deleted data, and you are often not notified when it deletes them; likewise you may accidently delete files off your computer and this accident is mirrored on TM.
    6. Restoring from TM is quite time intensive.
    7. TM is a backup and not a data archive, and therefore by definition a low-level security of vital/important data.
    8. TM working premise is a “black box” backup of OS, APPS, settings, and vital data that nearly 100% of users never verify until an emergency hits or their computers internal SSD or HD that is corrupt or dead and this is an extremely bad working premise on vital data.
    9. Given that data created and stored is growing exponentially, the fact that TM operates as a “store-it-all” backup nexus makes TM inherently incapable to easily backup massive amounts of data, nor is doing so a good idea.
    10. TM working premise is a backup of a users system and active working data, and NOT massive amounts of static data, yet most users never take this into consideration, making TM a high-risk locus of data “bloat”.
    11. In the case of Time Capsule, wifi data storage is a less than ideal premise given possible wireless data corruption.
    12. TM like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    13. *Level-1 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. TM is very easy to use either in automatic mode or in 1-click backups.
    2. TM is a perfect novice level simplex backup single-layer security save against internal HD failure or corruption.
    3. TM can easily provide a seamless no-gap policy of active data that is often not easily capable in HD clones or HD archives (only if the user is lazy is making data saves).
    #2. HD archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    2. Unless the user ritually copies working active data to HD external archives, then there is a time-gap of potential missing data; as such users must be proactive in archiving data that is being worked on or recently saved or created.
    Advantages:
    1. Fills the gap left in a week or 2-week-old HD clone, as an example.
    2. Simplex no-software data storage that is isolated and autonomous from the computer (in most cases).
    3. HD archives are the best idealized storage source for storing huge and multi-terabytes of data.
    4. Best-idealized 1st platform redundancy for data protection.
    5. *Perfect primary tier and level-2 security of your vital data.
#3. HD clones (see below for full advantages / drawbacks)
    Drawbacks:
    1. HD clones can be incrementally updated to hourly or daily, however this is time consuming and HD clones are, often, a week or more old, in which case data between today and the most fresh HD clone can and would be lost (however this gap is filled by use of HD archives listed above or by a TM backup).
    2. Like all HD-based data is subject to ferromagnetic and mechanical failure.
    Advantages:
    1. HD clones are the best, quickest way to get back to 100% full operation in mere seconds.
    2. Once a HD clone is created, the creation software (Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper) is no longer needed whatsoever, and unlike TM, which requires complex software for its operational transference of data, a HD clone is its own bootable entity.
    3. HD clones are unconnected and isolated from recent corruption.
    4. HD clones allow a “portable copy” of your computer that you can likewise connect to another same Mac and have all your APPS and data at hand, which is extremely useful.
    5. Rather than, as many users do, thinking of a HD clone as a “complimentary backup” to the use of TM, a HD clone is superior to TM both in ease of returning to 100% quickly, and its autonomous nature; while each has its place, TM can and does fill the gap in, say, a 2 week old clone. As an analogy, the HD clone itself is the brick wall of protection, whereas TM can be thought of as the mortar, which will fill any cracks in data on a week, 2-week, or 1-month old HD clone.
    6. Best-idealized 2nd platform redundancy for data protection, and 1st level for system restore of your computers internal HD. (Time machine being 2nd level for system restore of the computer’s internal HD).
    7. *Level-2 security of your vital data.
    HD cloning software options:
    1. SuperDuper HD cloning software APP (free)
    2. Carbon Copy Cloner APP (will copy the recovery partition as well)
    3. Disk utility HD bootable clone.
    #4. Online archives
    Drawbacks:
    1. Subject to server failure or due to non-payment of your hosting account, it can be suspended.
    2. Subject, due to lack of security on your part, to being attacked and hacked/erased.
    Advantages:
    1. In case of house fire, etc. your data is safe.
    2. In travels, and propagating files to friends and likewise, a mere link by email is all that is needed and no large media needs to be sent across the net.
    3. Online archives are the perfect and best-idealized 3rd platform redundancy for data protection.
    4. Supremely useful in data isolation from backups and local archives in being online and offsite for long-distance security in isolation.
    5. *Level-1.5 security of your vital data.
    #5. DVD professional archival media
    Drawbacks:
    1. DVD single-layer disks are limited to 4.7Gigabytes of data.
    2. DVD media are, given rough handling, prone to scratches and light-degradation if not stored correctly.
    Advantages:
    1. Archival DVD professional blank media is rated for in excess of 100+ years.
    2. DVD is not subject to mechanical breakdown.
    3. DVD archival media is not subject to ferromagnetic degradation.
    4. DVD archival media correctly sleeved and stored is currently a supreme storage method of archiving vital data.
    5. DVD media is once written and therefore free of data corruption if the write is correct.
    6. DVD media is the perfect ideal for “freezing” and isolating old copies of data for reference in case newer generations of data become corrupted and an older copy is needed to revert to.
    7. Best-idealized 4th platform redundancy for data protection.
    8. *Level-3 (highest) security of your vital data.
[*Level-4 data security under development as once-written metallic plates and synthetic sapphire and likewise ultra-long-term data storage]
    #6. Cloud based storage
    Drawbacks:
    1. Cloud storage can only be quasi-possessed.
    2. No genuine true security and privacy of data.
    3. Should never be considered for vital data storage or especially long-term.
    4. *Level-0 security of your vital data.
    Advantages:
    1. Quick, easy and cheap storage location for simplex files for transfer to keep on hand and yet off the computer.
    2. Easy source for small-file data sharing.

  • Recommendations for cloud backup for both Mac + PC

My company wants to begin cloud backups for both our Macs and Windows machines. I'd like input on anyone's experiences with any of the companies that provide this.
Ideally, I'd like it *similar to* the ~$60/yr plans (as for one computer); I'll have to compare pricing for multiple units once I have at least a couple of recommended programs.
    Thanks,
    CB

    Mozy
    CrashPlan
    Carbnite
I've been using Mozy on my MacBook. Mostly it works OK, but every once in awhile, they put out a new release, and it break my Mac Mozy backup (I think they focus on the PC side of the business more). The customer support has been responsive (assuming you get someone that is not PC centric, which is easy to do if you ask). Then again, I've had to reload all my stuff from scratch twice because of Mozy hick-ups. This is too bad for me, as I consider Mozy a secondary backup for off-site protection, not my primary backup solution.
I know Mozy has a corporate backup solution, however, I do not know how much they charge.
I also do not know if Mozy pesonal edition will get through a corporate firewall. If you are a small company without a corporate firewall, then that is not a problem.

  • Taking RMAN backup of primary and standby databases.

    Hi,
I am going to setup a Standby for Primary two node RAC to single node standby.
My doubt is, in standby both primary and standby will have the same db_name. So how can i take the RMAN backup of both primary and standby by using a single catalog.
That is, we can register the primary DB with catalog using it's db_name. But how can we register the standby with catalog using same db_name as it is already registered.
    Thanks,
    Mahi

Are you using a physical or logical standby?
If its a physical standby why do you need to back up both databases? backup the standby and you are done, the backup from the standby can be recovered to either the live serever or the standby if needed, andt hen the archivelogs used to bring it up to date.
If its a logical standby then change the database name for the standby and you can back both up to the same catalog, or alternativly cretae a new catalog for the standby, either as a new database or a new schema in your existing catalog.

  • [solved] missing latest backups for iPhone after getting replacement phone

Thought I would share this one in case anyone else runs into it.
My the speaker on my wife's iPhone 4 on Verizon had stopped working for phone calls for the second time and a restore didn't fix it, so she returned the phone and they gave her a new one at the store. We had made several backups over the last few days, the most recent was this morning.
So tonight we hooked up the new phone to iTunes and got ready to restore it, but iTunes said the restore was last updated in FEBRUARY. What?! My wife freaked out thinking all her photos etc. were now lost for good.
I held off on the restore and decided to do some checking around before doing anything. I found the folder where the restore files are, and sure enough I found files from today. I copied that folder just in case. I also checked in iTunes itself and the backups were listed. So what was up?!
It finally occured to me that we had recently upgraded her phone to iOS 5, but that the new iPhone 4 from the store was probably still on iOS 4 -- maybe iTunes was not smart enough to see this situation and tell us about it, and maybe it won't listed iOS 5 backups for an iOS 4 phone.
Well that turned out to be the case. But what to do to fix it? I figured if I could get iOS 5 onto the phone, we would be all set. But I didn't want to tell iTunes to label it as a new phone either -- I'm not sure if that would be permanent or what. So I took a leap of faith and held down the power button and home button simultaneously for a while, past the power off notification, until the phone prompted to be connected to iTunes to be restored.
Then I plugged it back into the computer (this is Windows 7, by the way). Sure enough iTunes said it detected a phone in recovery mode, and would I like to have iTunes restore it to factory settings and put on the latest iOS? I sure would, so I did that and waited...
After that was done, iTunes wanted me to active the phone with Verizon. We had already done that an hour earlier over the phone, but tried it anyway, and it failed. We ignored that failure and went into the phone in iTunes -- it now asked if it was a new phone or if we should restore it -- and the backup from this morning was listed. Phew!
Finally completed the restore. I noticed that all of the passwords for all apps were lost -- unlike with a normal restore/backup on the same phone -- but everything else (pcitures, apps, etc.) was there. Thank goodness!
So, if you have upgraded the iOS version and have to replace your phone and the nreplacement has an older iOS verison, then that may explain why your backups appear to be missing...

Yes, I tried. But nothing is working. I am feeling bad as such a costly phone stop working in 1.4 year ?
I am just sharing my experience.
I am not ranting but yes angry as I am eligible for upgrade in Nov 2012 so don't want to pay $149 for replacement as I can upgrade to iPhone 5.
Apple expert please help me how can I fix it. It's completely software issue.

Looks bad. I would strongly advise backing up the stuff on the other two partitions as soon as possible in case the rest of the drive goes wrong.
Beyond that, Disk Utility has limited abilities to repair disks, DiskWarrior uses a different approach and might, emphasis might be more successful. It has certainly done the job for me in the past when Disk Utility could not.

  • How can you merge multiple daily backups into one backup for that day?

Ok, so I had some trouble getting Time Machine to backup some new files and finally had a force a "deep traversal." But now I have 20+ backups for today before I did the "deep traversal" because I was selecting "Back Up Now" to get it to backup up the new files.
Because it is annoying to have so many backups for one day, which differ only by incoming and outgoing emails, I am wanting to combine all the backups for today into a single backup for today. Is there any way to do this?
    Thanks!

Yes. Wait 24 hours, and Time Machine will do it for you. It keeps all backups for 24 hours, but only one (the first of the day) for a month. Thereafter, it keeps one per week, deleting the others, as long as there's room. • Want to Use eHD for Primary Storage

    Good day,
My question basically is: How do I change over to use my eHD as my primary storage instead of using it for back up through Time Machine? AND Can anyone explain how to do it as though I just plugged in a Mac for the first time yesterday?
Background: About 2 years ago with some great advice from people who answered a previous post I purchased a 1TM OWC external HD.  I was down to 4GB left available on my internal and I find myself in a similar situation now with only 11.93GB left on my internal HD despite the 1TM eHD which is only a fraction full.
2 years ago when I originally connected my eHD I was given the option to store directly to eHD OR use it for back up through TM.  Being a novice to it all and for whatever reason, not sure why exactly but at the time I chose to back up through TM.  I was having issues with getting TimeVault turned off and was overwhelmed etc. etc.
Anyhow--flash forward 2 years later I am filling up my internal again with only the 11.93GB left that I mentioned.  According to OmniDiskSweeper a good 142.9GB of it is coming from my movies---mostly the events vs. projects of course but 142.9GB none-the-less.  I know when I import movies from my camera I can choose to direct them to the OWC but because the internal shows up first by default, sometimes I rush import without changing it to the OWC, hence filling up my internal.
Basically what I really want to do is  store everything directly to the eHD and I am not sure how to do it.  Is there anyone that can walk me through the process in simple, simple terms?  Although I feel I've come a long way in 2 years I still consider myself a novice.
Yes, I have read many posts, threads, discussions but with different suggestions so not sure what is right.  I am not familiar with this stuff such so I end up being afraid to "try" any of it for fear of losing my pics, movies forever. Or having to re-do them somehow.  I read about just moving iMovie but too many options as to how and not sure which is right.  Most forums are for people who know more than I about this already and suggest things like change events to view by volume (did it) but then I read stuff like open volume where events are stored and drag to volume you want to store it.  Well for someone like me that raises more questions than answers.  What volume?  Do they mean in my case drag to the eHD?  Will this keep everything the same as I had it?  Will I still have my dates?  Titles?  Some discussions say copy.  Do they mean move?  Etc. Etc. Etc.
Really I want to just store directly to eHD for primary.  I want to be able to open iMovie, iPhoto and have everything just like I do now but with all that glorius 1TB storage.  I don't want to redo anything---just move and run off the eHD.  Possible?  If I simply unplug my eHD and reconnect---will I get the option I did 2 years ago to store directly to the eHD?
    UGH!

    Hi BDAqua,
If it's "easy" I would consider getting another 1 to 2 GB.
I read a post before I posted here that referred me to Ken Stone's site about formatting and partitioning but I couldn't change the "Volume Scheme" like in his examples.  My real ones were greyed out so I didn't have the option to select.  And honestly--reading on it's pretty complicated (based on my lack of knowledge with this) and I'm afraid I would screw it up anyhow.  Anything else besides partitioning?
Anyone know what happens if I just turn-off Time Machine? What if I unplug the eHD and plug back in and start over?  Like a re-boot of sorts?  Too good to be true?
