Our Businessman's Radio Interrupts our WRT54G Router

My husband is a farmer and has a businessman's radio that he uses to communicate with his hired hands.  He hooked one up here in our home office, but when he did, our Linksys WRT54G Router stopped, and therefore we don't get Internet.  I tried moving the radio to a different place in the room, but it still interrupted the service.  I'm sure there's a different frequency or something that I can change, but I'm not savvy enough to know how or what or where!  Advice?
Thanks!
norobin

My guess is that your radio uses the same 2.4 GHz band as your WRT54G router.
If the above is true, then the solution is to get the radio and the router to use different channels.  There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band.    Check the radio manual and try to verify whether or not it is using the 2.4 GHz band, and determine what channel the radio is using.  Then (assuming the radio does use the 2.4 GHz band) set the radio and WRT54G to different channels, preferably at least 5 channels apart.  For example, if the radio is using channel 9, then set the router to any channel 1 thru 4.
If you cannot determine the channel that the radio is using, then try setting the router to a different channel.  This is a matter of trial and error, to see what channel in the router will work best.  Usually channels 1, 6, or 11 work best.
Some radios will use all the 2.4 GHz channels, and cannot be restricted to a single channel, or a few channels.  In this case, the radio and the router will not be able to be used together.

  • Macbook Pro will not reliably connect to our wifi router  - any suggestions?!

    Hi
My partner has recently bought a second-hand (but fully functional) Macbook Pro running OS X 10.5.8 to set up in our home office.
Our wireless router is not in the same room (it's in the living room via the hallway) but no other computer or device in the house has any problems detecting and connecting to the router.
My partner's pc netbook and my iPhone 4S connect fine all through the flat. My iMac (located in the office) also has no problems.
We have managed to get the Pro connected to the internet wirelessly a couple of times in the living room (although not all the time) but as soon as it is moved into the office the connection cannot be found or successfully connected to.
Can't help but think that there's some little setting or something that we've not done that is causing the problem - seems odd that all the other devices connecting have never had any issues! I'm not completely technically minded, but have had enough experience with computers to feel fairly confident on them - just wondered if anyone might be able to suggest anything?
The Network Preferences pages don't seem to be any help to me - I've tried several things in there that would usually help to rectify a troublesome connection.
Any help or advice would be so much appreciated - my partner bought this Macbook Pro to replace her netbook and a reliable online connection is paramount as she is designing websites etc. with it!
    Thanks,
    Jimbanzee

    Hi JohnTh
Thanks for your suggestion (and apologies that it's taken forever for me to try this out and get back to you)!
I think I've done what you suggested but I think my lack of computer knowledge is letting me down as it did not work.
I went to Network in System Preferences whilst connected to the internet via Ethernet cable, and managed to connect to my router, I then locked the changes, removed the cable and then restarted but straight away upon logging in, it had lost the changes and was unable to find the wireless connection.
To be honest, it will not always find it when the ethernet cable is plugged in - in fact, I've witnessed it go from green light connection, having found the router and getting an ip address to amber without the ip address to not being able to locate the router (all whilst still plugged in on ethernet) within the space of about two minutes!
I'm a bit hazy on the details of your suggestion when you say:
Go to the wireless setup from here, and change the name to something that you can recognise. Make sure that it is password protected. Save it so that it'll write itself to its flash memory (your network will briefly not work).
I went to the Network page of System Preferences straight away - is there somewhere else I should do the wireless setup? Our wireless connection is (as it is on my iMac which connects fine wirelessly) protected with a WPA2 Personal password.
How do I save it so that the setup will write itself to it's flash memory? Sorry not sure where this is!
I have also tried to remove the 'remembered' network from the advanced airport settings using the '-' button and then adding it '+' back in, but this also does not seem to work.
We are planning on upgrading the operating system from 10.5.8 once we can get a secure connection - my partner is happy that she can connect to the internet via Ethernet cable but she is wanting to sell her PC netbook (in order to part fund the purchase of the Macbook Pro) and she's not happy to do so until she can connect wirelessly successfully!
Finally, thanks for all your help and suggestions - really appreciate it and hope to find a solution!

  • Linksys WRT54G router--Why doesn't it work with my Macbook?

I have a perfectly functional Apple MacBook (Unibody, late 2008) running Leopard 10.5.6. I have used it to connect to public Wi-Fi but it is unable to connect to my home Linksys WRT54G router. I called Apple Tech Support, and they suggested that I change the wireless channel and/or temporarily remove the WPA encryption. I did both, the computer still could not connect. In System Preferences on the MacBook, it tells me that "AirPort does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the internet." The tech support guy tried to help, but in the end basically told me that the router just plain might not be compatible with Apple products. (My iPod Touch cannot connect either.)
I can buy a new router, but this one works perfectly for the rest of the computers in the house (PCs) and they're expensive--and there's no guarantee that those will work either.
So: Does anyone know any solutions short of buying a new router that would make my Linksys compatible with my Macbook AND our home PCs? Or, failing that, a good, WPA-encrypted router that WILL work with both?
I have a Snow Leopard disk (I just received the computer on Thursday). Would upgrading to Snow Leopard be of any help? I'm planning on doing it anyway one of these days.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Sola Gratia

You are in the wrong forum but I'll try and help anyway. That model of Linksys router has a long history of not getting along with Apple products. That is not to say it will never work, but it does require that you download and install the latest firmware for the exact model of router that you have. There are multiple sub-models of that router so make sure that you get the right one.
Once you have done the firmware update, restart your router and try it again. WPA-psk should work but for troubleshooting purposes, turn off encryption and see if you can get your MacBook and touch working. You might want to use WPA2-psk instead of WPA.
I would hold off on Snow Leopard until you get WiFi working. Nothing like changing to too many things at one time to really mess things up.

  • Seeing Vista resources using a wrt54g router

I currently have 2 wireless xp machines that work fine sharing resources through the wrt54g router.  My wired vista machine (through the wrt54g router) can see the 2 xp machines but the xp machines can not see the vista machine.  The 2 xp machines the network name is "krizmanic" (that is the name of our wireless network) on the vista machine the network name is "network" (don't know where that came from).
How can I get the wireless xp machines to see the resources on  the wired vista machine?  Do I need to change the network name of the vista machine (if so how do I change the name)?
    Thanks

  • Having trouble with multiple wireless users on WRT54G router

Basically, there are 3 of us wirelessly sharing the internet via a linksys WRT54G router. I have our router password-protected, to avoid randoms stealing out broadband. I am a Mac user (3 year old computer), the other 2 are on PC laptops.
At the moment, I have an excellent internet connection, and it's working just fine. However, if my room mate connects with their laptop (a fairly new model), my internet connection stops working. I still have a signal, but it just really slows down/often stops working entirely. It's  as if their wireless connection takes priority and ignores mine (essentially nullifying the router's purpose).
Has anyone come across a problem like this before? Your assistance would be super helpful and appreciated.

Hi, perhaps you may try the following steps to improve the performance of your router:
    • Upgrade the router’s firmware
    • Reset the router after the firmware upgrade
    • Optimize the router’s wireless settings
    • Use a wifi analyzer like http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ to set a non overlapping channel to the router
    • Relocate the router on a more central location for better wireless coverage
    • Avoid placing the router on a glass or metallic surface

  • Online Games Problems With WRT54G Router

    Hi There ppl,
I have a Lan House with 50 comps working, and most of my costumers are looking for online games entertainment (Cabal Online, Ragnarok, Dota, CS, 9 Dragon etc). We have an 8 Gb DSL connection and another one of the same speed for back-up (not running simultaneously at the moment). We should be having outstanding results for online gamming (and we were before installing the new router) but we are having several problems since we install a new LinkSys WRT54G router here. Our physical configuration is the modem, followed by the router, than three DLink Switches(24 ports) and my main computer. Everything cable
What we noticed is that the Internet connection looks normal (even using the command "ping", nothing strange appears, no timed out at all!) but online games (specially the above mentioned) have an intermitent connection. (Some times they connect, some dont)... Looks like it happens usually when I have the house crowded, but already showed also with it empty.
Another issue is that I am using the LinkSys Advisor to help identifying this problem, but I am getting even more confused, because its giving new information each time I refresh the "my network" window. Also happens when showing "My Network Settings" on the Support Tab.
Im using Firmware 8.00.0, what I think is the newest.
I didnt try any forwarding port issue yet, as I would like to receive more information about it (never needed to configure anything related before). Concerning the MTU value I already tryed withou any significantly result.
Please If anyone had the same problem, or have any idea of other possible tests, i would appreciate a lot.
Thank you and have a great day all

    Hi there Helm,
Tks for your attention and reply to my issue!! Yesterday right after posting here (when we closed the doors and I could be able to work on it) I did get the latest one (8.00.2) and also set up manually the MTU value to 1500 (standard is automatic). I also unckeck the "anonymous internet request bock", "Multcast filter" and "Filter NAT forwarding", all of them were checked as standard. I also checked the "HTTPS Internet Access" (standard is only HTTP).
At a first moment I could get a very low sensitive better result (but the Lan was closed, so I had the entire 8Gb for my requests). I came back to work right now, and we have about 30 ppl in, mostly using the Internet, MSN and so... I am trying yo connect to Cabal Online, and GG-Esports (Warcraft, Dota) both of them giving the same problems as always... I am really getting tired and disapointed with LinkSys, I really though I would have much more than I am having right now.
Anyway I gonna keep trying each night to see what I cant get. I do post here If I find any solution (or if I really decided to move to another brand)
Thank you a lot and have a great night out there

  • No Internet when connected to wrt54g router

I've seen that I'm not the only person to have this problem, unfortunately it doesn't appear that the question is answered satisfactorily in the forum. My laptop was connecting fine to an ambient wireless network in my apt building (yes I had wired internet but the computer would say "Wireless Connection Found!" or somesuch, so I know it was connecting to something). Eventually someone either lost the connection or secured it, so I lived with the wired connection for a while. Then a friend of mine gave me the WRT54G router & wished me luck. I have had nothing but trouble with this router - my computer says that it is connected to the router, I can even use the browser utility to do things like upgrade the firmware and change my settings. My computer works FINE with the wired connection, but the minute I try to route it through the wireless router, Internet is history. I have Verizon DSL, I would love to connect to my service wirelessly so I can listen to internet radio in other rooms without creating a massive safety hazard by stringing Ethernet cable through my entire house. I've tried everything that I could find online, including downloading a network diagnostics tool, but nothing is helping. I've done everything your site says, everything in the user guide, even things friends suggested to me. No luck. Any ideas? I'm almost ready to throw the router into traffic!

Thanks for the links, but these are both things I've looked into, and don't understand. I'm something of a newb when it comes to technical stuff on computers - I can use them, and screw around successfully with some of the system stuff, but unless someone explains to me what each odd abbreviation does, I'm lost. I've done the ipconfig /all in command prompt and come up with a bunch of stuff that I'm not sure will help me, I've played around in the router's actual configuration mode, it connects to my computer, and has the Internet light on, just my computer won't go online with the wireless router connected (with or without wires attached). It's like there's a little wall inside the router that won't connect my computer to the DSL modem. DSL modem works fine - all cables work fine, internet works without the wireless router in place. There's just something not connecting somewhere, and I don't know what. Everything externally is perfect. Everything internally SHOULD be perfect (everything's supposed to be automatically configured, right? Usually?). It's just not working.

  • Wrt54gs router to internet cable modem connection drop

With the wrt54gs router set at auto dhcp and mostly on default settings, after some time of inactivity the connection between the router and internet cable modem drops out.  That is, when there is no activity (no transmission to/from internet) the connection drops and the wireless connections shows "local only."  Any suggestions/comments on why this is so?  Thanks!

Have you tried to connect the Modem to the computer and checked if you are facing the same problem or not?
On your Router setup page, change the MTU size from AUTO to Manual and change the Size from 1500 to 1350 and click on Save Settings..... Then click on the Wireless tab and below Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Click on the sub tab under Wireless "Advanced Wireless Settings"

  • Lag Spikes with WRT54G router

I've recently noticed that while playing numerous MMO games (Aion, Champions Online, and World of Warcraft), I've been getting lag spikes for the last few months, at first I thought it was because Aion and Champions were in beta stages, but I kept getting them in World of Warcraft, when I went back.
I bought a new WUSB600N USB adapter, because I built a new system and my old PCI card does not fit, nor does it nativly support vista or Vista 64 (which I am using).  So I am not sure if it is the USB adapter, or my old WRT54G router.  My fiancee is also having the same problem with her wireless G adapter in her laptop, so I bought her the WPC600N adapter and is still getting the same issue.  When I connect via a cable I seem to be okay.
I also have all the correct ports forwarded, for World of Warcraft.
Now my question is, is it because I am trying to game with a wireless connection, or is it because of my router?
I was thinking of buying the WRT160N to see if it will fix the problem.  Is there a better solution?
I am only about 10 feet from my router,  so distance is not an issue.
    System Specs:
    Intel I7 920
    Intel DX58SO motherboard
    6 GB memory
2X BFG GTX275OC (running in SLI)
    Creative X-FI Fata1ity PCI-E
    WUSB600N USB adapter
    WRT54G wireless router.
    any suggestions would be helpful.

Having trouble setting up a linksys WRT54GS router with verizon DSL using a westell 6100F modem. the modem works fine by its self  but the router will not connect  to the internet when installed like the cd tells you to.
online help and phone help has been less than helpful,  anyone have any Ideas?

I have a linksys WRT54G router that we use as a base. I want to use Airplay using Airport Express and hook up my stereo to it. How can i set up my Airport express without a PC/laptop? I just downloaded Airport utility on my iphone and ipad, will that work? And one more thing about the setup, the linksys router shich acts as a base is in a different room as the airport express which i wanted to use for airplay. So I'm hoping to hook up the Airport express via wireless signal. If i can set it up, can someone pls help me out by posting detailed instructions. Thanks so much!

The first message that AirPort Utility will display during the auto setup will be that the Express will be confgured to "extend" the network. When AirPort Utility analyzes the network further, and sees that the Express cannot "extend" the 3rd party network, the next message will indicate that the Express is being configured to "join" the wireless network.
Once the Express is configured, if you later go into AirPort Utility to check the settings under the Wireless tab, you will see that the Wireless Mode is indeed "Join a wireless network".

  • WRT54G Router - Internet connection issues using the Ipod touch

Ok, first - here is my setup. I've got the router hooked into the modem, with the desktop computer hooked directly into the router.  I've got my laptop running off wireless internet, and I've got an ethernet cable connecting through my laptop to an xbox for xbox live connection.  I recently just got an iPod touch, and I've come to realize that whenever I'm on the iPod, it messes with the internet on the desktop computer and on the xbox, but not the laptop really.. it makes the internet really slow, or sometimes it doesn't work at all, especially on the xbox.  Is there anything I can change to make these all work at the same time?  Or is this too many connections or what? Please help. thanx.
(running windows vista home premium, WRT54G router, pretty much beginner status, though I can follow directions easily : ] )
Also, the internet always works on the ipod, it seems as though the ipod is 'taking over' the internet.. it doesn't lose it while in the area, yet the other computers and xbox does at times..
Message Edited by jmaxey0122 on 12-16-2009 05:27 AM

You might be facing the problem, because the Ipod and your Desktop computer must be having the same IP address thats the reason whenever your IPod is connected to your Network, your Desktop must be getting disconnected. Check the IP address of your IPOD and of your Desktop Computer.
First thing which you need to check, if the Physical connections are done properly. Connect the Modem to the Internet Port of the Linksys Router and then Connect the computer to the LAN Port No.1. On your Desktop computer login to the setup page of your Router and click on the Status tab and check "Internet IP address"
If required you can Re-Set your Router and Re-configure all the settings on your Router from the scratch.

  • How do I set up WRT54G router with 4 computers and WVC54GC Wireless Camera

Can anyone please tell me how to set up my Home Network with full security turned on?
I have at least 4 neighbors that show up on my wireless connections list. I have a daughter that loves music and is constantly downloading viruses but only on one wireless connection. The rest of us want to be protected from that computer. My system consists of the following:
    One Linksys WRT54G Router
Two Linksys WMP54G Wireless PCI adapters,
Two Linksys WVC54GC Wireless Cameras  (Possibility four if the 1st two ever work OK.)
Two Linksys LNE100TX PCI Ethernet Cards,
    One HP Ethernet Printer
Three computers were connected by Ethernet cable and one was wireless. I did not change the admin password and I thought everything was working fine for a couple of years until I found that the wireless computer was acting as a “drone” and slowing everything down to a snails pace.  It could even turn itself on.
I changed one of the Ethernet computers to wireless and decided that it might be time to also change the password and increase security.  Setting up security completely shutdown the wireless drone computer. I was OK with that, at least until I can reformat that harddrive.
I then decided while I was at it, I would add a wireless camera (WVC54GC). I set it up using the software and Ethernet cable that came with it. After 6 tries I finally got the camera to work with the cable attached, but it does not work wireless and now none of the other computers connect any more. Is there a limit on how many connections? Should I reset the router and if so, do I disconnect the DSL modem? I’m afraid of the “drone” computer because I found some very bad malware on it. One in particular caused me to replace a hard drive.
I’ve read page after page of network stuff on the Internet and I guess I just don’t know how to ask the right questions. I’m tired of fooling with this.

hi , when u talk about security , are u referring to the "viruses" your daughters PC may be propogating to the rest of the network , or are u referring to external attacks on the router or your wireless PC"s ???
In case u are referring to the "virus" attacks , the best you can do is install a good antivirus software on all PC"s and keep the virus definations updated....
In case u are referring to the wireless security , i'd suggest that your use WPA2 personal. you can select WPA2 by going to the "wireless security" option.
let me know if u need anything more.

I have a Win XP SP3 desktop that is wired (not wireless) to WRT54G router  (v 3.0 router with latest firmware version 4.21.1).
The PC repeatedly freezes when I connect to internet using IE or Firefox and has to be re-booted using power button. The following are the 2 error messages from Event Viewer:

    Other details:
    1) Vonage adapter also connected to router
    2) This PC used to be connected to same router via a wireless-G adapter WUSB54G. That has been disconnected, Linksys software uninstalled and PC is now wired to router. The problem used to happen at that time also.
    3) Router is setup with WPA-PSK security with TKIP and mode G-only.
Any help is greatly appreciated. I am at my wit's end.

I also would like to suggest that you download and experiment with another browser, Google Chrome or Opera and see if they are affected also. Their installation may refresh or reload the missing dll's.
