Out an install disc on the "crossgrade"/"upgrade"?

Maybe a silly question, but I'm wondering - if I send Apple my FCP4 install disc - and I decide to wipe the machine and re-install everything, will this "upgrade"/ "Crossgrade" work? Or is this strictly an upgrade to what is already on the machine? I don't want to be out an install disc....

I can't answer your question officially and I've yet to receive my upgrade discs but I'm pretty sure the upgrade disc is a full upgrade. If it was a partial upgrade, it would require your old discs and you have to send those in.
Upgrades are available even as far back as FCP 1, IIRC, so requiring that you have a working install prior to upgrading would be very difficult.

  • Pre 10.5.6 Server install disc and Unlimited users upgrade.

    Hi,
Has anyone attempted to upgrade a 10 Client license to Unlimited using an old pre 10.5.6 OSX Server install disc on the latest generation Mac Pro's.
I'm aware of the pre 10.5.6 install disc issues with the latest hardware.
    Thanks

If your existing 10-client license is for 10.5.x then there's no issue - just enter the new serial number in Server Admin and you're done.
If your existing license is for 10.4 then you have the typical upgrade issues to deal with.

  • What is the meaning, or significance, of the greyed out word "installed" next to the iBooks app icon in the iTunes list of apps on my new iPhone6, or slightly older iPad mini, retina display?

What is the meaning, or significance, of the greyed out word “installed” next to the iBooks app icon in the iTunes lists of apps on my new iPhone6, or slightly older iPad mini, retina display?  Both devices have iOS8.0.2 installed.  Both are having problems downloading some books that had been purchased previously for other devices.  And, before installing iOS8, the full list of had been downloaded to the iPad mini with iOS7.
Finding out what the greyed outness means may help me figure out how to get all my books loaded on both devices.  Any suggestions how to do that also would be appreciated.

Thank you.  Your explanation of why the word "installed" is greyed out makes sense.  But that raises the further question of why then is it shown at all.  There are other apps on both devices that can not be removed, and they are just not shown.  This is the only app that has the greyed out "install" notation.  All of the other apps shown are either identified by "remove" meaning it is installed and can be removed; "install" meaning it is not installed but can be; or "update" meaning it has been replaced by a more current version which can be installed.
All of the books that I want to install have been on an iPhone4 that was replaced by the iPhone6, and were on the iPad Mini with iOS7 before iOS8 was installed.  Installation of iOS8 on the iPad removed all of the books and only a few of them were later added by syncing with iTunes.  Since most of the books I am interested in are free or of small cost, I would be happy to delete all of them from iTunes and then reinstall the ones I want directly on the devices.  But I have not been able to delete them and when I try to install them on a device I am told that they already have been downloaded.  Very frustrating.

  • HT4561 Has anyone had trouble updating from 10.6 install discs to the combo 10.6.8 v1.1 using software update?

I've been having all manner of issues with my system, seemingly out of the blue. I just had a third party install a new HDD for me, and I used my snow leopard install disc (the one I bought many years ago, right after it launched), and when I tried to run the software update and install four updates all together, I got a notice that the file didn't download properly and may be corrupted. I'm wondering if this could have caused my system crash after the last clean install.
I'm downloading manually instead of using whatever is in software update just to be safe this time, but I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience?

It's interesting that you were connected via ethernet yet still had a similar issue. I wonder if perhaps our hardware issues that prompted the clean install may have been similar?
When I attempted to run software update again, it seemed to think that it had completed the download for the 10.6.8.v1.1 update, even though it listed it at over 1Gig, and had "completed" after mere seconds. I know my wifi setup isn't THAT good, and even if it were, I've never seen a wireless connection allow for download speeds of that magnitude.
I wonder if there is something missing from the original install discs that causes trouble with network connectivity? This is conjecture, I really don't have a solid working knowledge of the Mac OS X network tools. When i downloaded the intaller package from the website it seemed to resolve all my issues.
My clean install was done on a brand new HDD with a new partition, my unit seems to be functioning normally (for) now. Fingers crossed...I'm a teacher and my system crashed the day before labour day, taking with it a LOT of things I had prepared, and not backed up due to my foolish weekly backup schedule on Time Machine.
Thanks all for the suggestions and the help, interesting things to discuss!

  • Open Firmware Can't boot my WinXP install disc (although the OS sees it)

So I've been unable to play ANY games on my MacBook Pro under Crossover (games that worked fine under my old 1.8Ghz MacBook Pro) because I get all sorts of weird graphical rendering issues.
So I thought I'd reboot into windows, install the games there, and see if the problems were related to Crossover or not.
So I launch Bootcamp Assistant to install Windows XP. I pop in the Windows XP disc (under MacOSX) and I see the disc and all the installer files, and I click to reboot into the Windows installer.
The laptop reboots and when it comes up I can hear it trying to read the cd. I can hear it switching speedings up and down and moving the read headers. But it never starts the installer, instead it spits out the disc and prompts me to insert a bootable disc.
Problem is I know this disc works. I've used it many times. And back over under MacOSX it reads the disc just fine.
So I know this "new" laptop I got from work was actually refurbished, and I think they messed with it. Specifically I wonder if they mess with the open firmware. Because again, MacOSX (the software) could see and read the disc just fine. But when I'm in the open firmware loader it can't read the disc.
Also, if I hold down Option at boot time, I get the option to select my WindowsXP disc because it sees it, but again, it can't load it...
Is this a 32-bit/64-bit issue? I don't know. All I know is I can't boot my XP CD to install XP....
Is there a way for me to reinstall the open firmware?

I've now tried my buddy's WindowsXP SP2 disc and the first time, it loaded the windows installer (boot and held down Option and selected the disc) but the install failed. On reboot the windows partition will not boot.
So I tried again, and now his disc and responding the same way my disc responds.
I reboot, hold down Option, select the Windows XP disc, and then the screen goes black. I hear it trying different speeds to read the disc, then finally it stops and spits the disc back out and tells me to insert a bootable disc.
So that's two separate WindowsXP install discs. Both are known to work.
So why can this drive see the disk and files just fine under MacOSX -but not- under the EFI bootloader?? And yes I've tried resetting the NVRAM/PRAM.

  • IMac drive spits out Apple Install discs...

All of a sudden, out of the blue, my iMac won't accept my Apple install discs, or my iLife '06 discs. It will accept some other discs, like Office 2004, but won't touch the Apple install or ilife discs.
I tried the same discs on my mini, and they all work. I spoke with an apple tech, and have tried various things, like resetting nvram and pram, without any luck.
I'm now going to try to boot in safe mode, an startup manager and try. If that doesn't work, I'm just going to request a new drive.
Anyone else ever have this happen?
    Bryan

    Hi Bryan,
I'm afraid I don't know which brands of drive cleaning discs are available in your part of the world. I've used various 'dry" cleaning discs over the years though without any problems. Most have a little "brush" on one section of the disc.
I'd look for a good quality product that specifically says that it is Mac compatible , if possible, though as many can even be used in audio or "stand alone" DVD situations, this shouldn;t be all that critical.
Be wary of any "wet" cleaning systems , or ones which look as if they may have problems with a slot loading drive though.
Its not a bad idea to run one of these every now and then BEFORE problems arise. You can get to a situation where the drive becomes so dirty that it can't even read the necessary info on the cleaning disc itself. I run one every three months, just to be on the safe side.
    Cheers

  • To run Apple Hardware Test: Original Install Disc or Snow Leopard Upgrade ?

To run AHT should I use my original install disc (10.5.5) or my SL upgrade disk?
    I am currently at 10.6.1.

You will need to run AHT from your original install disc.
AFAIK, you can't find this program on any retail disks, i.e., the SL upgrade.
This makes some sense, I guess, since the hardware test would be very machine specific.
This seems to be the latest support document on AHT:

  • New computer - lost TC Install disc in the move. What do I do?

    Hey all,
I had a G4 that I was able to successfully backup with the Time Capsule wirelessly. Unfortunately, that computer died after 8 years of hard work.
Anyway, I recently moved and got a refurbished machine (at around the same time). Unfortunately, I can't for the life of me find the disc that came with the TC. So there it sits, blinking orange. I tried plugging it in with the ethernet hoping that it would just pop up like a regular external drive, but no.
Is there a download that I can find somewhere? Is there something else that I could do to get around this issue?
Also, the G5 came without an airport card installed. Am I screwed?
    Thanks all,
    Tim

D'OH! So even if I hook it up via ethernet, I still need to access it via wireless?
    No.
There must be some confusion here. You can access Time Capsule with an ethernet connection. Wireless is not required. However, TC is basically and AirPort Extreme Base Station (a wireless router) with a built-in HDD. If you've purchased a TC, but don't need wireless networking, you could have easily picked up a USB/FW HDD. Having said that, I do use the wireless network on my TC, but still have my Mac connected by ethernet since the Mac sits right next to the TC.

Please update Firefox to 3.6.17 a.s.a.p. the reason being that there was a security breach at Comodo which is an SSL certificate provider recently whereby a number of fraudulent certificates were inadvertently issued. These allow a hacker to impersonate any site including online banking and the Firefox version you're running at the moment will not warn you that the site is a fake. The fraudulent certificates were blacklisted in v3.6.17 and beyond.

  • Upgrading eMac 10.2.8 to Panther - Are eMac OS 10.3 install discs prefered?

My original eMac came with the Jaguar 10.2 installed (and included the eMac 10.2 installation discs).
I have since upgraded as far as 10.2.8, but am considering upgrading to 10.3+ (possibly 10.4+ eventually).
Would I still be able to keep the Apple OS 10.2 "Classic" (OS 9.2) installed after doing the upgrade to Panther? Or would installing Panther make the "classic" application not function any more under Panther?
My real question is: would it be better to get may hands on the actual original eMac Panther (10.3+) installer discs .... or will any Panther 10.3+ installer discs be just as effective for upgrading the eMac. I would assume it would be better to obtain the original Panther instalation discs for the eMac (from eBay, etc.)?
Also, would there be any problems finally installing Tiger (10.4+) on an older eMac. I have the 880 mhz (1 gb RAM) eMac version (2002 - 2003), and I am wondering how far I could upgrade this eMac without pushing the limits of it's capabilities?
Any suggestions or comments would be appreciated. Thanks

    800 mhz eMac/Superdrive Mac OS X (10.2.x) (2) LaCie External Hard Drives (120 -320), 1 GB RAM

A 800 MHz eMac with 1 GB of RAM will easily run Tiger, and Classic will continue to run. If you're upgrading, since you'll need the retail (black label) disc as roam as already noted, by bother stpping at 10.3.x? Just go direct to 10.4, following the guide in Gulliver - Tiger Upgrade Guide. You'll need about 5 GB free space on the hard drive to do an archive & install update; you can lower that by doing an upgrade install and/or using the installer option to select only the language support you actually need (e.g., if you only use English, you can save about 1 GB but leaving the other languages out, or by running Monolingual if you've already done the upgrade). Note that besides the OS, you'll need to update any third-party disk utilities as well (see Only use Mac OS X 10.4-compatible disk utilities with Mac OS X 10.4 volumes).

  • Can't Upgrade Bootcamp With Leopard Install Disc

    Hi Everyone,
I just installed Leopard and wanted to upgrade my Bootcamp partition. However, when I start up in Windows and then try to install the new version, all it does is hang at Marvell Ethernet (which is the first driver to be installed). Now, one thing may be the problem--the drive that I am currently using to start my Mac-let's call it Drive 2, is not the same drive that Bootcamp is installed on, which is Drive 1. I wouldn't see how that could be a problem because I'm starting up in Windows, not from the Mac. Anyway, any suggestions? Thanks.

That isn't the original install disc as the one that came with the computer would be Grey in color, a very drab looking disc, however, if that was purchased from Apple and not a copy of another disc with just a label stuck on it, it should work.  However, if the disc were damaged then you would have the same problem you are having.  I would try to see if you can get another disc and try that (If you know someone that might have one).  If that doesn't work, then take it to a Genius Bar and have them look at it, they may be able to help you out.

  • Windows 7 only works when install disc is in the drive

    Background:
Macbook Pro 7,1 (13 inch, bought in early 2011)
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 (10K549)
Boot Camp Assistant 3.0.4 on Mac
Boot Camp 3.3 on Windows 7
Windows 7 is burned to a DVD. It was downloaded as an ISO through my school's Academic Alliance with Microsoft (a.k.a MSDNAA - Microsoft Development Network Academic Alliance).
    Story:
I've been trying to get Boot Camp to put Windows 7 on my Mac for some time now. I've followed the manual/guides for my computer, which in short followed these steps:
    Partition drive
    Insert Windows 7 disc
    Start installation
    Install Windows
    Download and install Windows updates
    Insert OS X install disc
    Install Boot Camp
    Upgrade Boot Camp to 3.3
That all seems to work well and fine, but sometimes I would have problems where upon restarting I would have to hold the Option key to choose to load Windows, instead of Mac OS - that's fine. I would see the Windows drive and chose it, but then it would always freeze. Eventually I tried leaving the Windows 7 install disc in the disc drive and when I held the Option key I would see the Windows Install disc as an option to boot as well. I tried booting with that chosen, and everything would work fine. That's how I was able to do steps 5-8 in my above list (because whenever my computer had to restarted, I had to choose the Windows Install disc).
Now, with everything installed and updated, and with no disc in the disc drive, I started up my Mac and choose to boot Windows, but it freezes within 10-30 seconds of logging in (just like before). However, with the Windows 7 install disc inserted, and choosing to boot through it, it works. This doesn't seem right.
Anyone have any idea what's going on and how I might resolve this issue?
Thanks in advance; and let me know if I can provide any more information for you.

    bought in early 2011
Those Macs do better wtih Lion drivers. Even if you install Lion not on internal drive but elsewhere.
A lot/most burned ISO like yours can even install but are bugged with problems if you didn't also do the burn at the slowest burn speed. Which sounds likely.
Last two: Windows partition was too small and doesn't have the free space for all the updates.
Finallhy, test RAM with memtest either Windows DVD which is a good way really, or from Terminial in OS X (where you can run dozens of little concurrent memtest windows and make short work even doing 5 loops x 256MB memory at once)
