Out of harddrive space? How to free it up?

I am a long time PC user that just recently got a MacBook Pro so I am a newbie.
I am out of space on my hard drive and not sure exactly what is eating up all the volume? I went to About This Mac and looked at the Macintosh HD and it says I only have 28GB out of 499GB available. The piece that is using up lion's share is all yellow "Other".
How do I find out what is causing this? Is there an easy way to determine what file is chewing up my hard drive?

not sure exactly what is eating up all the volume?
Movies & videos can eat up all of your storage space.

  • Running out of harddrive space - here's a fix.

Twice now I've run out of harddrive space on my t500 with a 160GB harddrive installed. The first time I called the IBM support people who were as useful as a chocolate teapot.
This time I turned to the Microsoft forums and finally got it figured out. I don't know if this will get to IBM's tech guys, but perhaps they may want to look into it for their build.
Vista uses an amount of the drive for Restore points and shadow copies of files. Typically this amount is limited to 15% of the drive space. On my copy of Vista, the setting was UNBOUNDED, which is why it gobbled up the entire harddrive.
In XP, this setting was controlled by a UI, in Vista, MS took a huge step forward and implemented a command-line utility to ocntrol this setting. (/sarcasm).
These are the commands to list and set the amount of storage consumed by Vista for restore points and Shadow copies.
    vssadmin List ShadowStorage
    vssadmin Resize ShadowStorage /on=C: /For=C: /MaxSize=5GB
Note that I set mine to 5GB which is substantially less than the default 15% of the harddrive. If you use this, use your own discretion.
The question of course is why I received a system with this set as follows:
    C:\Users\Mike>vssadmin List ShadowStorage
vssadmin 1.1 - Volume Shadow Copy Service administrative command-line tool
    (C) Copyright 2001-2005 Microsoft Corp.
    Shadow Copy Storage association
    For volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5bc3}\
    Shadow Copy Storage volume: (C:)\\?\Volume{a589e9af-cf02-19dd-bec8-001c259b5b
    c3}\
Used Shadow Copy Storage space: 6.656 GB
Allocated Shadow Copy Storage space: 9.108 GB
Maximum Shadow Copy Storage space: UNBOUNDED
Not that I expect IBM will 'fess up, but what the hey.
Edit: My apologies for the random smilies, I couldn't find an option to turn of interpreting some character sequences as smilies.

  • I am running out of disk space, how do I free up some memory?

I am running out of disk space. I think most of the memory is taken up by iTunes with music and TV shows. How do I free up some memory?

    Allendb,
If you are either new to the Mac OS, or like me, are a non-techie, just a small thing to understand. Memory in all ways, denotes RAM, while storage space is your SSD/iHD.
There can be a problem that you are moving out your stuff from the iHD to external device, yet the storage continues to shrink. It is because of a temporary Trash folder, that may not be accessible othrwise. Its always a good & harmless idea to clear it, to have surplus storage space. Refer to http://http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=835768 for a quick 2 minute resolution to this problem. This will, for sure, do the trick.
    Enjoy!

  • How much free space does a 4GB ipod need?

why does it keep saying i dont have enough free space? i already decreased the space to 3.85 GB, and its still saying i dont have enough free space. how much free space does it need?

This is more likely a matter of Apple specifying 4G as 4,000,000,000 byte rather than 41024*10241024 byte like your computer counts.
Using the "1000 notation", your 3.85GB would require 4.1GB. Try trimming your library down a bit more (to around 3.7G). I don't have my Nano yet, so I cannot verify if the device actually uses any of those "4G" for things other than storing your data.

  • My mac is runnug out of disk space. Do /i need to by external drives?  how much memory should i get

My imac is running out of disk space. I download a lot of media from itunes. The HD movies and TV shows use so  much space. Should I switch to the cloud, clean up my memory or buy an external memory drive? If i get an external drive how much memory is suggesyed? 1TB, 2TB or more?

Buy an external hard drive on which to save your media. The drive should be large enough to handle your entire iTunes Library plus how much you would anticipate adding to the library over the next few years. Then backup your existing library to the external drive: iTunes- Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
After you have backed up the library to the external drive you can configure iTunes to use the library on the external drive in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Change the path to the external drive. Once you do that quit and relaunch iTunes. It should now be using the library on the external drive. Now you can delete the library on the internal hard drive to free up the space.

  • How to set the limit for the warning 'running out of disk space'

I am wondering if there's a way to set the number of GB before I get the system warning 'running out of disk space'.
I saw this question asked in 2010 and it did not get an answer. It was archived so I am asking again. I know how to monitor the available space on my startup disk, and how to empty the trash to clear up disk space. I am looking for an OS X setting that I can change.

My guess is that you want to lower the limit. IMHO I think the limit is alreay too low.
If you are seeing this warning regularly then your disk is severely overfull and needs to be replaced with a larger one.
Running the free space low eenough to get the warning greatly increases the chances for disk corruption. Once the disk gets corrupted then then next thing that happens is data lose.
You have a serious problem with your Mac that should be dealt with immediately.
Backing your data up would also be a good idea if you are not already doing that.

  • How do i find how much free space my iMac has? Its running MAC OS v10.6.8

I can't see anywhere where I can find out how much free soace my iMac has, any help much appreciated!

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You have different ways to do it. First, you can use Disk Utility (it's in /Applications/Utilities). Open that application, choose "Macintosh HD" in the sidebar and free space will show up at the bottom of that window.
If you have Lion or Mountain Lion, open  > About this Mac > More Info > Storage.
Another way is using Finder. First, open a Finder window, select Finder menu (on the menu bar) > Preferences > General, and mark "Hard disks". Then, Macintosh HD will appear in the desktop, so choose it and press the Space key

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • How much free space do I need to have on my 32GB iPhone 3GS?

How much free space do I need to have on my 32GB iPhone 3GS for optimum performance? I have only 4 GB left and I am worried that performance will soon be degraded.

Apple allocates space on the flash memory for cacheing proposes. You shouldnt worry. You can fill it up with out preformance problems.

I'm running Snow Leopard 10.6.8 and want to upgrade to Yosemite, which requires about 5.7 GB. When I go to About this Mac, I see that I have 4GB memory. But to upgrade I think I need 5.7 RAM. I don't know difference between GB in memory and RAM. How do I find out how much free space I have and if it's enough to download Yosemite? I have 2.4 GHz processor speed for my MacBook 7.1. Also, first time I tried downloading, I ran out of gigabytes from my broadband account. I bought more ( 6 GB) and then the downloading stopped and never completed? Could I have run out of gigabytes on broadband account again?
RAM is different to disk space. Niel's #2 instruction tell you how to check disk space. That is where the installer will be saved when you download it.
Make sure the disk has well over 20-30GB free, the OS can perform badly if you fill the disk too full.
Since you have 6GB a 'cap' on your downloads I'd strongly suggest that you do the following if you ever manage to download the installer…
Wait for the download to complete, when the large window pops up prompting you to install OS X click Cancel.
Now open the Applications folder, find the installer (called 'Install OS X Yosemite'). Copy that to another disk for safe keeping.
When copied you can open the installer application from the Applications folder & continue to install OS X.
The reason for making a copy is because the installer will delete itself after installation. If you ever need to re-run it you will need to download it again. This is not good when you have a download limit on your internet connection.
Do you have access to any other internet connections? A friend, relative or business that has no download cap? It could be expensive to keep hitting your cap.
P.S. The installer may restart instead of resuming the download, so it is possible that the entire 5.7 GB will need to be downloaded again.
