Out of MTRRs at boot

It seems my laptop (an Acer Aspire One AOA150) runs out of MTRRs at boot. I've done some googling on the problem and read that people recommend turning on MTRR sanitizing to fix it, however, it still occurs. This occurs both with -ARCH and my own kernel config.
You can see that I have enabled MTRR sanitization here:

No luck with either (I already had enable_mtrr_cleanup=1, which just changes CONFIG_MTRR_SANITIZER_ENABLE_DEFAULT, but booting with  mtrr_spare_reg_nr=2 doesn't fix it either). The error from drm has now disappeared, but this still remains:

    Those kind of stripe comes out before bios screen for like 0.1 sec really really short period of time.
    it doesn't cause me any problem in normal use cuz it happens only when booting the laptop in the twinkling of an eye. however it nerves me sometimes.

  • ACD 23" Alu not displaying out from a fresh boot

    my cheesegrater MacPro recently died on me so I've "relegated" the ACD to work with my rMBP through the thunderbolt port with an Apple minidisplay-DVI adaptor
    Magsafe adaptor is on so the rMBP is closed and used with an external keyboard/mouse
    Everything is working perfectly if I boot up the rMBP then connect the ACD to it
    What's not OK is when I power on the rMBP with the ACD attached. it doesnt display out anything.
    The rMBP does recognise the ACD with a quick pulling out of the adaptor from the rMBP then back in again. But there is no display on the ACD. the ACD and the rMBP goes into spanning mode as the mouse moves out from the rMBP to the blanked out secondary display (ACD)
    My solution now is to connect the ACD only when the rMBP is up and running. The ACD has to be powered off from the powerplug and reconnecting the adaptor again which is silly.
    how can i use the ACD properly without hotpluggin

    i dont know if it had any thing to do with the SwitchResX app i had installed previously but i had it disabled completely and it seems fine now

  • Cant get out of SRV Diag Boot

    I have a 30gb video ipod. when I try to recharge it, the apple appears very faintly, then it pops into SRV Diag Boot (Mar 01 2006), and no matter how I reset it, it always boots back to the screen, and my computer won't recognize it. I have tried using reset in manual menu, running auto test (no problems detected), running all manual menu tests (no problems detected), performing reset (menu+select). I've also tried to both resets when attached via USB, when plugged into power cord, and unplugged. I've tried it with green eggs and ham...I am desperate. It seems to happen mostly when power is low. In the past it has finally allowed me to reset it, but this time nothing is working. Help!

    When you are stuck in Guided Access mode, you are really stuck as the typical triple tap on the home button to quit out of Guided Access doesn't work. Even a force quit won't work because the power button and the home button are disabled. The only way to get out of Guided Access is to press the Home and Power button together for 15 seconds. This will turn off Guided Access by forcibly rebooting your device. Once your device is restarted, you can then go to Settings > Accessibility > Guided Access > and turn off Guided Access if needed. I usually keep Guided Access off by default and turn it on only when I am handing my iOS device to my children.

  • Locked out of Windows XP Boot Camp control panel

    I'm getting locked out of my Boot Camp control panel under Windows XP with the following message:
    "An error occurred while trying to access the startup disk settings.
    You may not have privileges to change the startup disk. Make sure you have administrator privileges and try again."
    Likewise if I try to restart OS X from the XP icon tray, I get this message:
    "Could not locate the Mac OS X boot volume."
    However, holding the alt-key at boot up reveals both startup disks. I can boot successfully into OS X and XP using the alt-key, and I can switch startup disks successfully from the OS X System Preferences pane. Also, the Boot Camp partition is visible to Vmware Fusion and can be used to boot into Windows XP successfully. It's only within native Windows XP that the OS X boot volume is not accessible.
    I'm running Windows XP Home (SP3) with the latest Boot Camp 2.1 update. Re-running the BCUpdateXP.exe program to repair Boot Camp was unsuccessful. The OS X boot volume still can't be accessed from XP. Any ideas out there?

    Same problem, same error message now in October 2008. Running Mac OS X 10.5.5 & Windows XP SP3. Also running MacDrive and Norton Anti-Virus for Windows.
    Problem disappears upon reverting to WinXP SP2 using Windows System Restore. Imperfect fix, but it does work. Revert to last restore point when SP2 was working.

  • GeForce3 Ti-500DDR 4x AGP Video Card with TV-Out(Blanks screen at boot

    I just bought a Ti500 from a online store.
    I tried reinserting the card into the AGP slot many times.
    I've removed my original old PCI card(had to put it back in later though to USE the computer). When you turn on the computer it performs the POST and then runs the boot loader. I had some extra stuff
    to do in the boot loader(mine has a command line) so I couldn't
    get the OS booted before the card started acting up.
    First it will garble the video output(text will be messed up along
    with graphical artifacts all over). Then the screen goes black after
    a second. It does this everytime after a short amount of time
    after the computer power on(No matter what is running, it has done
    it in the BIOS setup). Is there something wrong with my system
    or is the card defective? Also, how can I tell if this is a real
    Ti500 because MSI doesn't list the card on their site.
    My system:
    400MHz Celeron
    128MB RAM
    I've read something about AGP versions supported by the motherboard..
    I have no idea who made my motherboard so I don't know its AGP
    version. The BIOS copyright displayed is to 1998. The site
    I bought the card said nothing about AGP version requirements though.
    (I have had a Geforce2 MX AGP in this machine before and it worked)
    How do I check the AGP version  in linux?

    By power supply on the low side, do you mean that my system
    power supply is too low for the card to function properly?
    So in order for the card to work, I will not only have to purchase
    a new motherboard and processor, but also a new power supply(and case)?

    I select sound to go to line out but with each new boot it reverts internal speaker. How can I "save" my sound preference??

    First, Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
    Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
    PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Running out of space on /boot

    Hi,
    A while ago I did a new installation of Archlinux, but I created the partitions in advance. During this process I made a mistake and made the /boot partition only 30MB in size. Now, a couple of months further, I'm running out of free space on this partition.
    As I'm led to believe each kernel-upgrade places some information on this partition while keeping the previous data. Is it safe to delete some of that data? If so, how do I do this?
    When I use a file manager application I don't immediatly see any kernel-specific data?

    -- and it's 5.9 MB altogether. (I'm using a generic kernel from the [core] repository.) If you're using Grub, it may need a bit more space. When the kernel is upgraded, vmlinuz-linux is simply replaced by the recent version and a new initramfs-linux.img is generated. Nothing else is added during the process. For the start, check which files are the largest in your /boot and where they come from.

  • Audio regions out of sequence when booting up

    I have experienced a problem over the last few years that I was wondering if anyone else has. After working for many hours on a mix, and being happy with the results,then closing down the computer, the next time I reboot the system, the audio files have rearranged themselves in the arrange window. Often hundreds of duplicates are made stacked on top of each other. Original regions often are no longer where they are supposed to be.
    Believe me, I am not stoned or intoxicated!
    What could be causing this problem?

  • Changed Mac HD to NO ACCESS for EVERYBODY now I'm locked out and will not boot

    HELP...I Imagine I need to enter somehow as root. and change the permissions; however, I'm limited to the OS X startup screen and OS X Utilities right now so a quick response would be appreciated.

    This is the first route I took before coming here-tried both repairing permissions and repairing HD using DU....No AVAIL...I get the first screen with Dark Apple and spinning lines in circle beneath, which then goes to an all blank screen where I am stuck: just a grey screen with my cursor arrow (which I can move, but there is nothing to select)...Basically in Mac **** right now as my backups are not doing well...the TWO EXTERNAL 1.5 TB DRIVES WERE BOTH DROPPED INDEPENDENTLY BY MY WIFE AND HER MOTHER AS THEY WERE REARRANGING THINGS IN OUR HOUSE...NOW I HAVE A CRAPPY TM BACKUP FROM AUGUST THAT I WILL ONLY USE AS A VERY LAST RESORT, IT SIMPLY ISNT COMPREHENSIVE ENOUGH TO COVER THE 500GB OF APPS AND DATA I USE NEARLY EVERY DAY IN SOME WAY SHAPE OR FORM.  ANY HELP (AND THE QUICKER THE BETTER AS I HAVE COURT FILINGS ON THAT MAC AS WELL THAT I NEED TO HAVE ACCESS TO W/I THE NEXT 4 HOURS).  AND YOU MAY JUST SAVE A MARRIAGE IN THE PROCESS!

  • Guys ... I have a 2008 MacPro running the current Yosemite.  I also have installed the sound amp called "BOOM!"  I have the Sound set to Line Out which should have the computer boot up to BOOM! Instead, it boots up to the Internal speaker. What's up?

    I have a 2008 MacPro running the current Yosemite. I have installed the recommended upgraded video card, but the sound is as it was new. I also have installed the sound amp/graphic equalizer called "BOOM!"  I have the Sound set to Line Out which should have the computer boot up automatically to BOOM!  and thus to the external speakers.  Instead, it boots up to the Internal speaker.  According to the folks at "BOOM!", this is happening to others who have similar Macs.  They can't find any explanation within BOOM!, so I am turning to you all.  Any ideas?

    Sorry, I guess I didn't state the problem very well.
    I don't want the computer to boot up to the internal speaker.  I want it to boot up to the external speakers.  However, even though System Preferences is set on Line Out, when the computer boots up or reboots, it erroneously goes to internal speaker.  So, every time I boot up, I have been going to System Preference/Sound and clicking on Line Out.  From that point on, everything is OK until the next boot up.  It is a small annoyance, but annoying all the less. The simple explanation seems to be that when the computer is shut down, it does not hold the setting for Line Out and resets itself to Internal Speaker.  How do I change that behavior and get it to go to Line Out whenever it boots up? 

  • Macbook wouldn't boot, somehow sorted itself out, but unsure of the cause

    Something happened to my Macbook that I read about in the forums here: It kept making a clicking noise, wouldn't boot, showed a question mark in a folder on a grey background. As per the advice given to others, I decided to put in the system software CD. Since there was already a disk in the drive, I held down the trackpad button then booted it again. The disk came out, and awesomely it booted like normal. I'm not sure what did it, but it's working fine now. My question is, why did it happen and will it happen again? What can I do to keep my hard drive alive?

    Either your hard drive is dying and it tried to boot from an unbootable optical disk,
    or your optical drive is going bad
    or the optical disk you had in the drive is bad.
    Regardless, it probably will happen again at some point.

    Nothing, they all die eventually. The 2.5" hard drives in notebook computers usually die after about 3 years. My last hard drive died after 2.5 years.
    You do have good backups, don't you?

  • Grub-BIOS UUID-base Arch/LXDE fails to boot completly 2/3 of times

    Hi,
    I have a GRUB-BIOS systemd based Arch/LXDE fresh installation (latest 2/2013 image).
    About 2 out of 3 times I boot the system freezes after  displaying that the  /dev/sda2 (my root) is clean.
    Yet, about 1 out of 3 trials, boot completes without problems.
    In either case I don't add any parameters, and just wait for Grub's timeout.
    The same happen with the Linux fallback as well.
    This is a single drive (sda) netbook installation.
    From the journalctl (see below) it seems to me that the alleged stuck boot almost completed!
    I'd appreciate any help!

    I had the exact same problem. For me the problem was the user groups. Apparently usergroups is not necessary for most use cases with systemd. And my user was in a lot of groups :-) . So I backed up my /etc/group and removed my username from almost every group.

  • Mac Pro boot failure

    Hello everybody. I recently bought a new Mac Pro (2x Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 2,4GHz, running OS X 10.6.8) and just encountered a very strange error at bootup. 1 out of 10 system boots take up much longer and end up in having the desktop with a light blue layer on the screen, being able to move the mouse cursor but not click on any item. I'm using the magic mouse + trackpad + wireless keyboard but have also tried to use a cable mouse with no success. The only way to shutdown the system is to force a power down. Then the computer will boot up fine again several times. Then again, the same error occurs. This is what the kernel log says. Have a look at the bold line: this is where the system hangs much longer at startup (I'm using verbose mode at startup).

    Okay, I just came a step further with troubleshooting but still hope someone may help me out of this.
    Everytime I shutdown the system before the error occurs again on bootup, the shutdown messages contain something like "AppleBluetooth ..." after unmounting all disks - unfortunately I cannot find this message in the logfiles but it's there on shutdown (using verbose mode) just before the system halts. Then, the next boot will lead to the mentioned problems. If I shutdown the system and the message does not appear, everything's going to be fine on bootup.
    There must be something wrong with the wireless keyboard + magic trackpad:

  • System boot failure after upgrade from linux3.13.8-1 to linux3.14.6-1

    I have tried to update the kernel again from 3.13 to 3.14 again, but no luck.
    My arch system boot failure with black screen, tried [ctrl]+[alt]+[F1-6] and nothing happen, no any recure shell prompt out.
    Then I boot with kernel debug parameters
    systemd.log_level=debug systemd.log_target=kmsg log_buf_len=1M
    althrough the screen was black, when I reboot and chroot into my system,
    I entered the following to find any error messages, please see the link below:

    I searched on internet, I think this is caused by my graphic card(ATI 5750), but I have no idea to solve it
    I don't know my system boot failure due to these error or another things.
    my PC specs:
    motherbroad - gigabyte GA-P55A-UD3 (bios ver - F11)
    cpu -  i5-750
    display - ati 5750
    os - arch 64bit
    Currently, I have downgraded back to 3.13.

    As there are errors associated with ntpd, I would temporarily disable the ntpd service and also ipv6.
    If they are not the only problem, at least your logs would be easier to examine for other problems.
