  • Need to take out battery to shut down MacBook

After installing 10.5.3 my MacBook shows instead of shutting down a small rotating wheel on the screen. I can only stop this by taking out the battery. When I start the MacBook and shut it down immediately whithout using the applications, it works normal. Has anybody an idea?
    Thanks.

    Hello Thierry,

The kernel shutdown freeze problem occured less often, but it is still existent.
I have Virus barrier since I bought the MB, so far no problems.
I do not understand why Virus barrier could be the origin?
As you suspected already, an additional discussion: "no viruses on a "rootless" Unix system". So far there are no viruses around, but in the future I assume that there will be viruses also for macs.
What do you mean with rootless?
    Hello Wolfgang,
I tend to believe that you have a "strong" windows background ... and fear ... Google Desktop ... VirusBarrier ...
"rootless" means that the "root" user is not enable. No one can log in - or attempt to - on your system.
The big difference between Windows and Unix (MacOSX), is that on Windows, there is an Administrator user/group that has full control on the machine. On MacOSX, there is no "root". You are a user who is temporarily allowed to grab root privileges through a grant obtained through a user input.
A virus is a system that penetrates another system and replicates with the objective to infect nearby systems.
On Unix, a virus can modify - and infect - a system only if it runs as owned by root. If your Unix system doesn't have a root user, then that virus program cannot alter root owned files.
The only way for a virus software to gain root privileges is to run as a kernel extension. The command I've made you type is run actually every night on my Mac and sends me a mail with the result.
So, it's not because "one day there will be viruses also for macs". There will never be viruses: they can't replicate! and if there don't they can't be viruses.
Now, there are existing other threats: Vulnerabilities and Trojan Horses.
Vulnerabilities are failures or loop-holes that exists in some software that can allow a system to get past and above the program that presents this exploit and execute its code in the workspace of the application above that has loaded (spawned) the faulty software.
Usually, Virus Protection software databases are updated no faster than Apple or Microsoft, or HP or SUN or IBM when such exploits are revealed to the public (CERT group). Your VirusBarrier won't be of no help here. Just run regularly Software Update.
Trojan Horses are software - malware - that get installed luring the user believing the software in question does wonderful (good) things. Lately, there was a **** site that gave away some video player meant to play **** clips for free. Of course, this was a malware, fooling name resolution and directing browsers to phishing sites. Well, customers to these hoax look like easy preys.
A Virus Checker can help detecting "known" Torjan Horses. But you're not getting to let a TJ come into your system if you're not interested in free ****!!!
A Virus Checker, on the Mac, is only useful to check if you're not going to e-mail to your PC friends an attachment that is in fact a software that uses Windows design flaws to do harm to its owner.
There is no risk on a Mac to browse the web and get a malware, spyware, badware installed inconspicuously.
So, make sure of what software you install on your Mac, where it comes from. Turn off all Sharing services. Turn on Firewall when you're on a network you don't control (Wifi hot spots, hotels, bars, airports). For the rest, you don't risk zip.
Get rid of that Virus Barrier stuff.
When I'm in an airport lounge, I always have fun listening to music of "others" who have left the Sharing on on their iTunes (Macs + PCs). You don't even have to pay for accessing the Hot Spot.
    Cheers,
    Thierry

  • MacBook will not log out, restart, or shut down

I know there have been tons of posts on this topic but I still do not know how to fix this. My MacBook has never had any trouble shutting down, restarting, or logging out before and now all of a sudden it will not do any of these three things. I have not installed anything new in quite some time. Whenever I try to shut down it says that Finder will not quit and to quit the application, I do this and the Mac just sits there at the desktop without the dock and the hard drive symbol. Is there any solution to this problem?

I'm very new to the Mac World so I don't know what you mean!
I did read to repair the permissions and this is what I got when I did that about 2 minutes ago:
Permissions differ on "private/var/log/secure.log", should be -rw------- , they are -rw-r----- .
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.usbmuxd.plist", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are -rwxr-xr-x .
Group differs on "private/etc/cups", should be 0, group is 26.

  • Bright Fade Out when I Shut Down Popcorn Time App

    Hello,
I have a Lenovo A7600-F Tablet, and when I used Popcorntime to see a film, all works fine. But when I shut down this app, the bright goes down, although the bright level bar seems perfectly fine. I can fix it when I touch this level bar, but I don`t modify the level, I only have to touch it.
    Any idea?

This can happen if adware is installed without your knowledge.

  • Can't get the desktop app to work - forced to sign out and it shuts down

I was unable to install the most recent update for Adobe Story, so I uninstalled the app, went online and re-downloaded. Now, when I try to launch I get an error that user preferences weren't found, and it forces me to sign out, so I can't work offline.
I've tried a system restore, but it did not fix the problem. At this point, I am unable to use Adobe Story on my computer, just online.
    Please help me fix this.

I solved this myself by creating a second Adobe ID, sharing my project files with myself under the new ID.
The app works with the new ID I created.

  • Firefox does not save my tabs or sessions when I shut down my computer

    To be more clear:
Yes, I have set my options to "show windows and tabs from last time".
No, I did not check "clear memory on shut down" or "start private session"
Also, it saves my tabs when I restart the browser, but when I shut down my computer and start up again, Firefox does not show my tabs from last time. The same thing happens with sites I've logged onto before; it logs me out after I shut down my computer.

Did you check the "Clear Recent History" settings to be sure cthat you do not clear the Browser history and the cookies?

  • HT1222 iTunes won't quit and won't allow the computer to be shut down

Does this update fix the fact that once iTunes is launched I can no longer quit the program (it automatically restarts) and it won't let me shut down the computer (or force quit) or restart. This problem just started. Once launched, you can't quit iTunes and you can't shut down your computer. You can't install software or perform any function that requires iTunes to be closed. I have searched the web and have found other users with the same issue but no real solutions (or reasons why it is happening). It is weird that iTunes has a mind of its own and can just cancel shut down or restart. It immediately relaunches if you force quit. I no longer can listen to my music because I am afraid to launch iTunes! I was able to choose restart once and then shut down from the restart screen the first time it happened but after that it would not even let me restart. Once it worked by logging out user and shutting down from that screen but then the next time it wouldn't allow it. It is like it learns how you are working around iTunes to shut down your computer and then it figures out how to cancel it. Eerie and annoying. Any ideas? I should say that I am running an iMac with OS 10.6.8. Thanks.

  • Lion shut down

I have been following some of the discussions re Lion not shutting down, and have the same problem for the past three months or so (never had a problem with it before - it just suddenly started with the grey screen and the icon turning and nothing further). So I have been doing a 'manual' shutdown since the problem started. I suddenly however also developed major problems with Parallels and Windows 7 - too numerous to begin to mention here - have to get on-site support (again!) for that whenever I have a day that I don't need my Mac. One of the problems however seems to be that whenever I have shut down my iMac the previous day after work and restarted it again the next morning, Parallels and Windows have stopped working altogether, and then it takes me day of reinstalling everything etc. So, I have essentially developed a mortal fear of shutting down my iMac.
Sorry, long sad story, but all I actually really want to know: how important is it to shut down the iMac? Can I keep it running until I have eventually sorted out all the Parallels and Windows problems, even if it may be a week or more? Or should it be shut down every now and then? I think you will gather than I am just a regular user, so sorry if the question seems a bit basic....

I leave my iMac running 24/7.  But you should be able to shut it down when necessary.  Have you tried repairing permissions and running a filesystem check?  Have you tried logging out first, then shutting down?  Repeated forced shut downs aren't such a great idea.  You may want to check in Activity Monitor and see if there's a hung process before shutting down.

  • Shut down with multiple users logged in

Is there a way to shut down the Mac with other users logged in, or do you have to log out each person individually? Any shortcuts to log out everyone and shut down?

    Hi Peter
Just shut it down, then you should get a message saying that you need to enter administrator name and password because others are still logged in.Enter name and password press ok. It should shut down then
    Skip

  • T 61 will Not shut down

A two week old Type 6459 T61 with Vista Business will not shut down. It will sleep and hibernate but will not shutdown or restart (and I am telling it specifically to shutdown/restart). After a bit all disk activity stops and it just sits there telling me it is "shutting down" when it is not doing anything. For as long as I let it sit that is what it is telling me. I must use a hard shutdown, such as the power button (so programmed) or unplugging and yanking the battery if i actually want it to shut.
Any clues?  If I shutdown before I log in then shutdown will work. But if i log out and then shut down this will not work.  If i restart uing safe mode (after forcing the shut down) then the machine will shut down. Have tried all sorts of variations of shutdown.exe to no avail. Have run with and witout Aero. I am running only Lenovo/MS supplied or branded software in services and processess and disabled all else. I have disabled all startup apps via msconfig except antivirus (presently the Norton that came with the machine) and winamp agent (to maintain file associations) and Lenovo's on screen display. No help.
There are about 50 (I am not exagerating) services and processes runnning when I try to shut down that are not running in safe mode when the machine shuts down properly. I am hoping someone has a suggestion other than to disable each of the service/processes in turn and see if machine will shutdown or restart.
And I do not want to reinstall Vista. Too many commercial apps (MS office, Adobe 9 Professional etc.) that I would have to reinstall.
Have tried with and without Sidebar; no change. Have tried with and without NVidia helper apps; no change. Have not yet used Roxio (supplied by Lenovo) .
So, I hope someone "out there" can think of which processes are the "bad" ones. There seem to be many threads about Lenovo's shutting down when they should not; I have not seen other posts where people are having trouble shutting down when they want to shut down. I would like to think the problem is not with Windows Vista or with the Lenovo supplied software (then it should happen with everyone, right?) but what I would like to think may not count . . .
    TIA
    Bill

    Hello,
Bill please activate your windows services, except may be indexing, they eat not much memory and cpu power.
Vista will need one or two weeks, after you have your programs installed to get fully performable.
I would recommend to uninstall Norton and may me Winamp, if necessary.
Antivir or AVG are much smaller and faster, but also safe.
    Regards
    Andreas

  • Mac pro restart after shut down

hey i have mac pro 4.1. i have 10.9.1. and always that i press the "shut down" the mac just doing restart. i tried log out and press shut down but still restart. need fix..
    thanks

I kept having this problem until I noticed my Apple trackpad was running low on battery power. Since replacing the batteries I have not a single  random restart. (Of course, when I shut down later it could reappear just to make a liar of me!)
So...could it be a Bluetooth issue - polling with low battery power or some such?

  • Thinkpad X201 usually suddenly shuts down!

    Dear all!
I have two problems with my Thinkpad x201.
1/ When I use it with battery and charging then I plug adapter out, it suddenly shuts down. I take it to my office or repair service and do the same but it not suddenly shuts down.
2/ it has been running fine but always suddenly shuts down in an instant, as if somebody turned off the power switch when temperature CPU up to about 55 degree C (using battery only or adapter or adapter + battery). But I take it to my office to use or take to repair service, it not suddenly shuts down. => Use it at home suddenly shuts down when CPU up to about 55 degree C. Use at office or somewhere else not suddenly shuts down whatever temperature CPU up to about 55 or 60-70!
I find some topic talk about this problem but haven't got any good solutions. I would like hearing all idea. Thanks all!

Had the same issue with the X1 carbon. send it in as it likely has a bad motherboard.

  • MBP not shutting down or restarting

    Hello guys!
A few days ago, I came across a strange problem on my macbook pro: I wasn’t able to log out, restart or shut down using the apple menu, nor using the power button, which just won't respond.
When I try to restart, nothing just happens. No spinning wheel, nothing. The only way to restart is to use sudo reboot in the Terminal.
This problem started short after I installed a program called “FontForge”, but uninstalling it didn’t help, nor did recovering the system from an older Time Machine backup (from the time before I installed the FontForge).
Finaly I thought it could be something about the SMC and I reseted both it and the PRAM, but without any success. Then I did a re-installation of Mac OS X Lion using Lion recovery, but still no difference and now I’m beginning to feel quite clueless.
Although the problem isn’t life-threatening, it’s very annoying and I’d really appreciate any help. Thanks in advance.
(Just so you know, I’m running Mac OS X 10.7.3 on a MacBook Pro 13” mid 2010)

There could be a couple of things going on here. First, I would start the cpu in recovery mode (cmd+R). Select disk utility and repair disk as well as repair permissions. After, I would start up in safe mode (hold shift) and then remove user library cache and sys library cache folders. Restart CPU, if should now shut down and restart without a hitch.

  • Mirror Agent not shutting down - what is this?

Hello - Does anyone know what Mirror Agent is? In the last week when I try to shut down a time out pops up w/ - Mirror agent has failed to log out so the shut down is canceled. This is probably not the right forum but can anyone direct me to the correct forum? Thank you in advance. Tami

Mirror agent is the "sync" feature of iDisk.
A mirror is a "reflection" of the files your are trying to "sync".
You can turn synching off in the MobileMe System Preference pane / iDisk tab.
