Out of Perm space

I'm getting out of perm space in an uncertain condition.
The problem can be reproduce with all those settings:
Tomcat 4.1.27 , J2SDK 1.4.1_02 , SunOS 5.8 sparc.
Tomcat 4.1.27 , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
Tomcat 5.0.16 , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
Tomcat 5.0.16 , J2SDK 1.5.0-beta , Windows 2000 pro.
Resin 3.0.5 , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
oc4j 10g (9.0.4) , J2SDK 1.4.2_01 , Windows 2000 pro.
I've used VisualGC to monitor the Memory used by the JVM.
The problem is hard to reproduce but occur when class contained inside a war file (WEB-INF/lib or WEB-INF/classes) are loaded into a classloader.
Normally when a web application is loaded into an servlet container a new classloader is created and the class from WEB-INF/lib and WEB-INF/classes are loaded into the classloader when needed. When a class is loaded the code and symbols are stored into the permanent space. Normally when the classloader is garbage collected, the perm space are release.
The problem occur for certain web application. When some classes are loaded into the classloader a certain condition prevent the JVM from flagged the classloader as collectable. Those class are not constant. I've used the -verbose JVM option to see the class loaded and found nothing in common between the problematic .war files. This problem leads to an increase of the Perm Space size on each reload of the guilty web application. And this leads to some OutOfMemoryError when the perm space reach 64M (this is the default). Increasing the Perm Space is just a temporary solution since the JVM will have to be shutdown and restarted when the Perm Space is full.
My next step is to try other JVM implementation.
Thanks for any help.

I can't figure out how a class can hold that reference. The problem can be reproduced inside a web application that use sun's web service developper pack. Here's a short description of the application.
I've created a smaller application of the original which is a simple servlet that only have a init() method.
Inside the init method I create a client stub with the scope local to init() method. So at this time the classloader loads a couple of classes inside the classloader related with a client jar that contain stub created with wscompile (a tool from the web sevice developper pack used to create soap client stubs) and jaxrpc-impl.jar.
The problem is not just related to this application it can be reproduce with another app that use struts (a framework for building web presentation).
The problem came up when we use the servlet container with a bigger application that was in development that use sun's soap implementation. After for example ~ 12 reloads (which means unreference the classloader and creating a new one) of the application the JVM start to throw OutOfMemoryError.
If I increase the size of the Perm generation it only push back the problem.

    Hi !
We are currently experiencing a problem on both JRE-1.5.0_15 and JRE-1.6.0_7. We have a JEE application running with EJB2 on JBoss 423 that we have migrated to EJB3 on JBoss5. The server is Windows 2003 SP2 server running in 32 bits mode (with /3GB option in boot.ini) is set up with 4GB memory and 4GB paging.
Before migration, this app runs perfectly on JBoss 423 compiled on JDK5 with runtime JRE5 and JRE6 (not at the same time though) up to 50 simulatneous users on a single JBoss instance.
After migration to EJB3, we are experiencing this error as of 5 simultaneous users :

We also have created a file with the list of methods we want to keep out of the JIT. With this option, the server runs longer but it eventualy crashes.
So we reckon this is a JIT issue on the App Server. I have posted a thread on JBoss forum but they recommended me to open one here.
So I have modified the JVM options to increase the Perm size :

Any recommendation to fix this issue ? Many thanks in advance for your help !

I recently experienced a similar issue on HP-UX 11iv2 with WebLogic 9.1 and HP JDK 1.5, and we were also using the CMS (Concurrent Mark Sweep) GC. I was able to resolve the issue by forcing the size of the Survivor Area using the -XX:SurvivorRatio=n parameter. By setting this to a value lower than the default (I think 25) it forces the Survivor Area to be a larger percentage of the New Generation, and hence larger in size. I found that I needed at least 8MB, but we have a pretty large application, so you might get by with significantly less.
As it stands, your New Gen will be 25% (default, I think) of you Xms, and I think the default SurvivorRatio is 25. The tricky part is the calculation using the SurvivorRatio. Since there are two Survivor Areas, if -XX:SurvivorRatio=25, then each Survivor Area will be 1/27 of New Gen. Anyhow, it's confusing, but you can easily verify these numbers online, and do the math yourself, but hopefully you get the point.
Obviously, I can't guarantee anything, but you might want to give it a try since my symptoms were extremely similar.

  • [nQSError: 46118] Out of disk space.

    Hello,
I'm having this error: [nQSError: 46118] Out of disk space. after launching several (heavvy) reports.
The software configuration is an oracle bi 10.1.3.3.3 and oracle 10g db.
What does it mean? I know it means that there isn't space left but where? In the db machine or in the bi server (presentatio? server?) machine?
Is it a db problem? I don't think so beacuse there isn't an ORA-XXXX error code so i think is not an oracle error caught by the BI server and we discovered that clearing all cursors from the administration prevent this error to appear for a while.
Can someone tell me if is an Oracle Bi (Server? Presentation?) problem and how to solve it? Do i have to set a parameter somewhere to limit the cursors or to high the cache?
    Thank you
    Maurizio

Are you on Windows or Unix? If unix, what flavour?
If you're on unix, try this:
    1) Just before running the reports, enter this command:
    while [ 1 -lt 2 ]; do date;ls -lrt;bdf;echo "";sleep 5;done
(if not HPUX substitute bdf for df or whatever gives you the state of your filesystems)
    2) Run your report
You'll get a snapshot every five seconds of how much space is available on your disk eg:
Filesystem 1K-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
    /dev/sda3 18374532 8232104 9209052 48% /
    /dev/sda1 194442 11691 172712 7% /boot
    none 1037444 0 1037444 0% /dev/shm
If it were a permissions issue then I'd have thought you'd get a permissions rather than space error.
Is 10Gb the total free on the BI Server ? That's not a great deal of space. I've seen tmp files grow to 2Gb each, so you'd potentially only need a handful of users running big queries to break things.

One of the java solutions is running on Windows Server 2003.
The physical memory size about is 2 GB.
Only this solution uses this server.
However, java.lang.OutOfMemoryError happens once an hour approximately.
I set GC option and get the trace like below.
Unfortunately, I dont know what is wrong.
I think that GC works without problem.

  • Java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Perm Space in Weblogic10.3

    Hi Friends
I installed an weblogic server on my machine with 1GB RAM, windows XP sp2.
I made simple application and deployed it on the server just after few sec of usage the weblogic server is giving this error
    java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Perm Space
i deployed the application in new domain that i created and the application is using the jdbc connection in weblogic rather then the url

I am also getting the error
Weblogic 10.3 gives out of memory
    Followings thing I have done
    1) Increased the -Xms512m
    2) Increased the -Xmx1024m
    3) Increased the max perm size in setdomainenv.bat
Is there any other way to resolve this issue I have a 2 GB system .
It is a production machine and the size of the log is around 4 GB .When analysed the log I found many connection refused error

I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)

You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.

    Hello,
    Part of the HS_ERR_PID says:
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (1.6.0_01-b06 mixed mode)
Does that mean you are running CF8 without updater1 applied? If updater1 was there I would expect JVM 1.6.0_04. Give that is correct you could apply updater1 and once that is done even update the JVM to a more current version. I see Java Dev Kit 1.6.0_23 is current, I have successfully used CF8 with 1.6.0_22.
There might be some interesting detail in the coldfusion-out.log file which likely is in [CF]\runtime\logs or [Jrun]\logs pending server or multiserver.
    HTH, Carl.

    Hello,
My Application(a Desktop application) through the following exception
Can any one please help me finding what are the possible reasons and solution for the below error?
    https://forums.oracle.com/message/6443182#6443182
    https://forums.oracle.com/message/6646295#6646295
I have seen in the above discussions that reducing the the heap size (Xmx) would give a solution, can any one please suggest me how much do I have to reduce my Xmx.
    Here are my log details.

    Hi
Out of memory they can result from different causes:
    - The application is consuming too many resources inappropriately
    - The application is opening and not enough threads are closing, leaving no space for the JVM
    - You lose the connection with database, causing the connection pool is saturated, which makes the memory of the container is depleted and reaches its peak.
    - The container does not have sufficient resources or is not tuned to meet the load generated. But would recommend to discard the above before using this option, because when using this option could work around the problem but could not really be attacking the cause.
    bye

  • JVM crashes with Out of SWAP space

    Hello every body,
We have a problem in a production environnement. The JVM crashes every time with the log file below.
The application which is running don't occupate all memory and we don't understand why an outofmemory exception is raised.
It's not probably due to an allocation inside the application because the exception should be an outofmemory exception : Java Heap space.
Please, somebody can help me to understant what append or to give me some advices?
Thank you a lot for help.

  • Ran out of storage space

Recently ran out of storage space on my laptop, where I have been storing all music/videos purchased from iTunes. The music library points to a location in the hard disc of the laptop. Now that I have no more space on the internal hard disc I acquired an external 250 GB disc. What's the best way to move forward with iTunes? I don't really know what to do.
    1. Should I copy all existing music/videos to the external drive?
    2. Should I point the library to the new location on the external drive?
    3. Should I delete all existing music/videos from internal storage and leave them on the external drive?
    4. How to avoid double entries of each song/video?
    Thanks for your help.

  • How do I find out how much space OSX and applications are taking up on my HDD?

I am thinking of moving my OS and all applications to a SSD to free up space on my MBP.
My question is how do I find out how much space OSX and installed applications are taking up on my HDD so I know how big the SSD needs to be?  Also, what is the best way to move these files across to the new SSD once installed?
    Many thanks,
    Andrew.

If you do command-click or right click on your hard drive and select get info, it will tell you how full the HD is.
there are some apps that can show you exactly how big particular apps are
    GrandPerspective

I replaced my internal drive with a SSD for performance reasons a few months ago. There are a number of ways to move your files over to the new SSD. I am a fan of the clean install, which might take a bit more time and effort but results in a very fast and trouble free mac. An easy way to do this if you are replacing your internal drive is to put the old drive in an external drive enclosure. Then you install the new SSD and install mavericks on it. In my case I used Diskmaker X to make a Mavericks installer (DiskMaker X (formerly Lion DiskMaker) . Then you can reinstall your apps from scratch, and finally move your documents over from the external drive.

Locate iPhoto Library (the default location is <~/Documents/Pictures/iPhoto Library>), select it, and choose File > Get Info.

  • "Error:Out of Disk Space" message. Why?

I've been using an Apple G4 with FCP2 to capture footage through a Sony DSR-11 deck. I've set up a LaCie 500GB 7200, with most of its 500GB available, as capture disk. As late as last summer I used this system to capture 70+ hours of footage which was then edited on another system.
This time I've met only problems. I've tried capturing 5 different DV tapes. They seem to be capturing but at the end of the hour I get the message "Error: Out of Disk Space".
Does anyone know why this might be happening? I've checked the set up and everything seems in order. (These tapes are 4:3, the ones captured last year were 16:9 DV, so the only adjustment I had to make was un-checking "anamorphic".) I even tried capturing to the MAC hard drive to see if the problem was the LaCie drive, but I get the same same message. (The LaCie I've been using had been full with last year's capture scratch and the disk had been erased through LaCie's Silverlining program, so for a while I began to think that this may be the problem; that maybe I'd have to reformat the disk, etc. but this test seems to rule that out.)
    Thanks.
    John

Since I last wrote I’ve changed hard drives, run tests on them, as well as trash my preferences, which I did earlier. Still, if I try to capture a tape (to disks with up to 460 GB available) I get the message “Error: Out of Disk Space”. The only thing I can think of doing now is deleting and then reinstalling the Final Cut software.
Here I’m kind of dumb and don’t want to make any mistakes. This Apple has been a stand-alone computer used only for Final Cut and the software was installed when I got it. The rest of my life has been conducted on a PC. So is there anything I should do before deleting Final Cut? Should I be doing anything to protect exiting project files, captured clips, thumbnail cache etc.? Will Final Cut just recognize these when I re-install? What do I do? Just open the Mac hard drive, identify the Final Cut application and drag it to Trash? Do I need to empty the trash first or should I leave it there for safety?
I look at the instructions that came with my ancient Final Cut 2 disks. Here’s what they say in full:
To install QuickTime, follow these steps
    1) Insert the Final Cut Pro CD in your CD drive. (I see I have two disks: one “Final Cut Pro 2”, the other “Final Cut Pro 2:Tutorial Media” Do I need to install the second?)
    2) Double-click the CD’s icon, then double-click the QuickTime Installer folder.
    3) Double-click the QuickTime Installer icon and follow the onscreen instructions.
    4) When the Choose Installation Type window appears, select Custom, then click Continue.
    5) In the next window, click Select All, then continue
This replaces any previous versions of QuickTime and ensures a complete installation of all components required by Final Cut Pro.
    6) When a message appears saying installation was successful, click Restart.
Is this all straightforward or might there be any potential pitfalls in the above instructions for someone unfamiliar with installing software on a Mac (In my case old software and an old Mac – a G4)? I guess I should also ask if you folks out there agree that re-installing Final Cut may be the answer to my problem, that this error message is the result of a glitch that has arisen in the installed version of Final Cut.
Thanks in advance for any help.
    John

  • My mac is runnug out of disk space. Do /i need to by external drives?  how much memory should i get

My imac is running out of disk space. I download a lot of media from itunes. The HD movies and TV shows use so  much space. Should I switch to the cloud, clean up my memory or buy an external memory drive? If i get an external drive how much memory is suggesyed? 1TB, 2TB or more?

Buy an external hard drive on which to save your media. The drive should be large enough to handle your entire iTunes Library plus how much you would anticipate adding to the library over the next few years. Then backup your existing library to the external drive: iTunes- Back up your iTunes library by copying to an external hard drive.
After you have backed up the library to the external drive you can configure iTunes to use the library on the external drive in iTunes > Preferences > Advanced. Change the path to the external drive. Once you do that quit and relaunch iTunes. It should now be using the library on the external drive. Now you can delete the library on the internal hard drive to free up the space.

  • How to find out how much space is left

    Hi,
I know Oracle XE has a 4GB user data limit, and a 5GB overall limit. Using APEX you can find out how much space is left via the administration section.
I'm going to upgrade to APEX 3.0 for testing. However APEX 3.0 will not show me how much space I have left since it's not explicitly written for Oracle XE. What query can I run to find out how much space I have left?
    Thanks,
    Martin

The following should give you the same results as XE administration => storage :
    select total, allocated, 100 - allocated / total * 100 percent_free
from (select 5120 total, sum(bytes)/1024/1024 allocated
    from dba_data_files
    where tablespace_name != 'UNDO')
