Out of storage ?

I have a late 2010 27" i3 iMac upgraded to 12gb RAM and running Yosemite.  I got a message telling me that my HD ( !TB) was full  -i'm pretty sure this isn't the case. I checked under " about this mac" and it showed 500mb free(!)  I ran verify disk, and repair permsissions, restarted by holding down Comand & R , and repaired the disk ( not an option available under normal start up) and it showed 200gb free - having done all that, I've restarted in normal mode, and once again - I have no storage available- 1gb free -
Does anyone have a (simple) idea of what is going on?

Here are some general tips to keep your Mac's hard drive trim and slim as possible
You should never, EVER let a computer hard drive get completely full, EVER!
With Macs and OS X, you shouldn't let the hard drive get below 15 GBs or less of free data space.
If it does, it's time for some hard drive housecleaning.
Follow some of my tips for cleaning out, deleting and archiving data from your Mac's internal hard drive.
Have you emptied your Mac's Trash icon in the Dock?
If you use iPhoto or Aperture, both have its own trash that needs to be emptied, also.
If you store images in other locations other than iPhoto, then you will have to weed through these to determine what to archive and what to delete.
If you are an iMovie/ Final Cut user, both apps have their own individual Trash location that needs to be emptied, too!
If you use Apple Mail app, Apple Mail also has its own trash area that needs to be emptied, too!
Delete any old or no longer needed emails and/or archive to disc, flash drives or external hard drive, older emails you want to save.
Look through your other Mailboxes and other Mail categories to see If there is other mail you can archive and/or delete.
STAY AWAY FROM DELETING ANY FILES FROM OS X SYSTEM FOLDER!
Look through your Documents folder and delete any type of old useless type files like "Read Me" type files.
Again, archive to disc, flash drives, ext. hard drives or delete any old documents you no longer use or immediately need.
Look in your Applications folder, if you have applications you haven't used in a long time, if the app doesn't have a dedicated uninstaller, then you can simply drag it into the OS X Trash icon. IF the application has an uninstaller app, then use it to completely delete the app from your Mac.
To find other large files, download an app called Omni Disk Sweeper.
http://www.omnigroup.com/more
Also, Find Any File
http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/
Download an app called OnyX for your version of OS X.
http://www.titanium.free.fr/downloadonyx.php
When you install and launch it, let it do its initial automatic tests, then go to the cleaning and maintenance tabs and run the maintenance tabs that let OnyX clean out all web browser cache files, web browser histories, system cache files, delete old error log files.
Typically, iTunes and iPhoto libraries are the biggest users of HD space.
move these files/data off of your internal drive to the external hard drive and deleted off of the internal hard drive.
If you have any other large folders of personal data or projects, these should be archived or moved, also, to the optical discs, flash drives or external hard drive and then either archived to disc and/or deleted off your internal hard drive.

  • Message: You will run out of storage when your downgrade takes effect

In my email, I received a message today with the subject
You will run out of storage when your downgrade takes effect
I looked in my account and don't see anywhere where I've set it to downgrade. It's still set at the correct level. I checked the credit card to make sure it hadn't expired.
Any thoughts of what else I could check?
    Here's the email:
As requested, your iCloud storage will be downgraded to 5 GB on 02/27/2015. However, you are currently using 6 GB.
Unless you take action before your downgrade takes effect, backups to iCloud will stop, and apps will no longer be able to save documents to iCloud. You can either free up storage or cancel your downgrade to keep your current storage plan for another year.
To continue using these iCloud features without interruption, you can cancel your downgrade by selecting a different storage plan:
    1.
On your iOS device, go to Settings and tap iCloud
    2.
    Tap Account.
    3.
Tap your current plan, then choose from the options presented
For more information on managing your iCloud storage, please read this Learn how to manage your iCloud storage >.

Sounds to me like you're not the original owner of the device.
Did you buy it secondhand? From where?

I am trying to edit my music list and then sync it to my iPhone 5 so I don't run out of storage space. However, I see the check marks on the iTunes library but am unable to uncheck them? How do I manually edit what will be synced to my phone? (the check marks are not bolded, does this mean they are not in my library but only on my phone?)

You uncheck the music in your iTunes library on your computer and along with sync only checked songs and videos selected under the Summary selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes, only checked songs in your iTunes library will be transferred to your iPhone or remain on your iPhone and the unchecked songs in your iTunes library that are currently on your iPhone will be removed when syncing.
Or make use of iTunes playlists and choose selected playlists, albums, artists under the Music selection for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes and select the playlists below that you want transferred to your iPhone.

How to Remove “Other” Data from iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch
    http://www.igeeksblog.com/how-to-remove-other-data-from-iphone/
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Ran out of storage space

Recently ran out of storage space on my laptop, where I have been storing all music/videos purchased from iTunes. The music library points to a location in the hard disc of the laptop. Now that I have no more space on the internal hard disc I acquired an external 250 GB disc. What's the best way to move forward with iTunes? I don't really know what to do.
    1. Should I copy all existing music/videos to the external drive?
    2. Should I point the library to the new location on the external drive?
    3. Should I delete all existing music/videos from internal storage and leave them on the external drive?
    4. How to avoid double entries of each song/video?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Macbook air running out of storage

I am relatively new to the mac world.  I have a macbook air 128g and am running out of storage space.  I am wondering if I can use icloud as a primary storage for my media files (Photos, music, video, etc).  Then I could potentially remove from hard drive to free up space.  I am concerned if this is possible and what the cons would be.  I am thinking that Itunes library and photos would not be as quickly accesible as it would be using the hard drive.  Please help...

iCloud can't be used for storage in that way. I believe sugarsync allows you to keep files online without having to have them on your hard drive.
A slightly fuller explanation here, you can keep files without having them on your hard drive by using SugarSync's 'Web Archive' Storing them in any other SugarSync location will cause them to be synchronized with your computer, a bad thing if you want to delete them from the the local storage.

The only way you can do that is to import them into your library first, but you may have done that already.
The easiest way to tell is to select a photo from the photostream album in iPhoto and ctrl-click on it, if it gives you the option to import it isn't in your iPhoto library, if it offers you the option to show in library it has already been imorted.

  • I am receiving a notification that says that I am running out of storage space. I backed up time mating to an external hard drive. Can I delete some files to make room?

I am receiving notifications that I am running out of storage space. I backed up my mac book using an external and time machine. Can I delete some files to make room?
    If so,
When I want to restore from my time machine, can I pick and choose, say certain songs, photos or documents?

About TM "Backup Drive is Full"
Alert TM only deletes older files if they have been deleted from the source and when TM needs space on the backup drive for a new incremental backup. Time Machine "thins" it's backups; hourly backups over 24 hours old, except the first of the day; those "daily" backups over 30 days old, except the first of the week. The weeklies are kept as long as there's room.
So, how long a backup file remains depends on how long it was on your Mac before being deleted, assuming you do at least one backup per day. If it was there for at least 24 hours, it will be kept for at least a month. If it was there for at least a week, it will be kept as long as there's room.
Note, that on a Time Capsule the sparsebundle grows in size as needed, but doesn't shrink. Thus, from the user's view of the TC it appears that no space has been freed, although there may be space in the sparsebundle.
Once TM has found it cannot free up enough space for a new backup it reports the disk is full. You can either erase the backup drive and start your backups anew or replace the drive with a larger drive. You can also use the Time Machine application to selectively remove files, but that may be ineffective if you have to free up GBs of space.

  • I install Lightroom, and I get an "startup disk out of storage", I install Lightroom, and I get an "startup disk out of storage"

One year old Macbook Pro with 256 GB SSD.  Not power users by any stretch as it's not a work computer (family computer for 3 kids).  We've enjoyed iPhoto and iMovie to process a single flash drive with~32 GB of pictures and movies. 90% of the kids work is done through Google docs so it's not like we've got 200 GB of docs.
As we become more photo enthusiasts, today's project was to explore LIghtroom, PhotoNinja and Nik Effects suite.  I installed PhotoNinja, Nik, and Lr.  As I begin importing a 32 GB flash card into Lr, the system crashes and I am unable to log in using my account.  I boot it in safe mode, and delete Lr, I get about 6 GB of available storage back.
    1.  Why am I almost out of storage?  This device is designed for graphics professionals.  What did I do to burn up 246 GB of storage for casual use?
    2. Is there master app that allows me to see which users are using how much storage?  Is it possible my daughter burned this much storage loading movies from iTunes?  Is it 5x iPhoto that is killing us with 2 photo users and 1 moderate user?
    3.  What can I do to install Lr in the future so that I don't hit this wall?  I thought Lr served a portfolio mgmt role, and I can't believe that it died after downloading <1,000 images.

Did you ever use iPhoto? If you did and you copied images to your hard drive and then imported them into iPhoto, iPhoto made a second copy of them. This might be where all you disk space went, or part of it.
The best thing to do now is get an external drive and install OS X on that then start the system from that external and move some of your files to the external. Then you might be able to boot back into the internal drive.
To install OS X on an external drive you'll need to boot the system from the Recovery HD. At startup hold down the Commadn + r keys. Have an external drive connected before you boot to the Recovery HD. Once in the Mac OS X Utilities use Disk Utility for format the external Mac OS Extended (Journaled) with a partition table of GUID. Once you do that exit disk Utility and select Reinstall Mac OS X and point the install to the external drive.

  • My MacBook Air is running out of storage. Will an external hard drive work for me?

Good afternoon, Apple support forums! I recently made a BootCamp partition, and now my MacBook Air is running out of storage (about 13 GB left), and I realize that I cannot expand the storage on my Macbook Air without some DIY technical work. I looked into alternatives and came onto external hard drives (I'm looking at the LaCie Porsche Design P'9223 USB 3.0 Mobile Hard Drive - 2 TB, but this question is for external hard drives in general). I was wondering, just in case, if I could use it not for backup (as I already have an Apple AirPort Time Capsule) but as added on storage for my Mac. Also, would I have to keep the external hard drive plugged into my Mac 24/7 to have access to the files stored on it? Thanks in advance for any help!!

    1. Yes, you can.
    2. You only need to have it plugged in when you're accessing data on it.

I transferred my 3GS photos onto my new iphone 5 ust to look at them. Now I am running out of storage. I need to save them to a computer so I can delete them from my phone. How can I do this?

    Hey bizteacher,
Thanks for the question. Do you still have access to the iPhone 3GS? If so, follow these steps:
iOS: Import personal photos and videos from iOS devices to your computer
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4083
You could also follow these steps on your new iPhone 5, so long as the pictures are stored in your Camera Roll (as opposed to being synced to your phone).
    Thanks,

  • I purchased a 10 GB plan on my iPhone and now I have total capacity of 15 GB. My iPad 2 told me I am out of storage space this morning ? Why?

I hope that the added/purchased iCloud memory applies to all my apple products

The additional storage is on the iCloud server, for email, contacts, calendars, Documents in the Cloud, etc, and as such is available to any signed in devices.
However your iPad is probably telling you that it is running out of storage - this is the built-in memory chip in the iPad which cannot be upgraded - iCloud storage is on the server, it does not apply to devices. No iOS device can have its memory upgraded.

    Hey guys,
My account has been out of storage space for almost a year now. It says I am using 9.2 GB of data in my email, but I do not have any email in any folder or trash. I have contacted apple support multiple times they always tell me they will call me back and never do. It is very frustrating, I get the out of space messages  a lot. Is there something I can do to reset my account? Or Is there any Apple dude here that can help?
    Thanks

  • After loading my photos from my iPhone to my mac iPhotos it prompts me to delete photos from my iPhone.  When I agree to this my photos never delete.  my iPhone is out of storage due to I can't delete photos.  What am I doing wrong?

After loading my photos from my iphone to my mac iphoto it gives me the option to delete photos on my phone.  When I click to delete the photos do not delete from my phone.  I am out of storage due to I can not delete photos from my iphone.

That problem is probably with your iPhone and not with iPhoto.
But try to download again to your Mac, this time use "Image Capture" instead of iPhoto.
Launch Image Capture from your applications folder.
Connect your phone to a USB port.
Select all the photos in your camera roll  to be deleted.
    Then press the "delete" key.
If there are photos on your iPhone that have been synced with iTunes, they can only be deleted by syncing again and deselecting the albums:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4236
If even Image Capture cannot wipe your Camera Roll, you need to trouble shoot your iPhone. Try the three R's, reset, restart, restore. http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3281
