Out of the box MBP 13" will not shut down

hello all
whenever I attempt to shut down/restart my laptop it stays in the grey page with a spinning wheel. having read tens of threads it appears a lot of people are having the same problem that I am having, but most are related to conflicting/badly written 3rd party apps whilst my MBP is almost minty. (in fact I have only installed onyx and microsoft office and activity monitor shows that neither are affecting shut down)
I have reset PRAM, verified and repaired disk permissions, ran some scripts as suggested by some forumers but they all failed to resolve the problem. Worse still I am currently in a country that does not have an apple store and the hotline technician hardly speaks any English.
HELP!

That log extract spans less than one second, and doesn't show anything remarkable.
Let's take a different tack. Launch the Terminal application, copy or drag -- do not type -- the line of text below into the window, and press return:
kextstat -kl | awk ' !/apple/ { print $6 $7 } '
Post the lines of output (if any) that appear below what you just entered (the text, please, not a screenshot.)
Next, do the same thing with this line:
sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|com\.vix|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
That's one line, not two. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning.
Next, this command:
launchctl list | sed 1d | awk ' !/0x|apple|edu\.|org\./ { print $3 } '
Again, one line. Finally, one more:
ls -1 /Library/{InputManagers,StartupItems}
Remember, this is all drag-and-drop or copy-and-paste, whichever you prefer -- no typing, except your password.
You can then quit Terminal.

  • Out of the box Mac mini will not startup

Hello all, just set up a new mac mini(meaning I plugged everything in and turned it on) I get the startup chime then nothing. My screen shows a system folder with flashing ? I tried everything in the manual, and then some(except calling Apple) Checked cords, unplugged wait plug back in, etc. Can anyone help?

Unfortunately, it sounds like you may have gotten a "bad apple". You should call AppleCare Support or take the Mac mini in to an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple retail store.
To get your disk out, restart the Mac mini and hold down on the mouse button. This should eject the disk.

Ipad 3 Fresh out of the box today, simply does not charge. Thoughts? (other than take it back to apple)

If it is just out of the box, I would take it straight back to Apple and ask them to fix it.
Why should you have to mess around with fixing a device?

My mac mini will not shut down or restart.  I need to manually shut it off with the power button.

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post any other kind of report — it will be very long and not helpful.

  • MBP will not shut down after installing patches

Over the last week I have installed all of the suggested patches, but now I find that my MacBook will not shut down! To shut it down I have to hold the power switch for 10+ seconds to force it.
Is this a known issue? if so, what is the solution?
Sorry if this has already been posted, I am at work on a really slow WinTel box.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello Terry,
Your problem might be some internet connection issue. If the pathes were not fully downloaded, the mac will not let you shut down or some error there etc. This will not happened frequently.

  • MBP will not shut down

    Hi
I have an MBP Core 2 Duo that will not shut down.  Shutdown is selected from the apple menu and it gets to a blue screen with a spinning segmented circle but never completes the shutdown...well within about 15 minutes, anyway.  Pushing the power button for about 4 seconds will shut it down and the subsequent restarts appear normal.
    Please help...

You reboot your Mac. Is FCP trying to open automatically (the icon bouncing)? Or is it just visible in the Dock?

Unplug it and let unit go dead. Then hold your Home button down and plug the USB power cord back in. iTunes should see it and then restore.

My iphone 4s will not shut down?  Please help??

Basic troubleshooting steps outlined in the user guide are restart, reset, restore from backup, restore as new device.  Try each of these steps until your problem is solved. If these steps fail to solve your issue, then you'll need to bring your phone into Apple (or an authorized service provider in your area) for evaluation.

My mail is stuck, and the computer will not shut down and the Mail is not responding. What should i do?

    Hi Clinton,
This happens to all the time and this is what I normally do. (Press and hold the pwer button until the computer shuts down) but, this doesn't seem to answer the real issue. Its just like you cut of the power to shut it down.
    Kind Regards

  • IMac will not shut down or restart using the apple menu

I have an iMac running 10.7.3 that will not shut down or restart using the apple menu.  The only way to get this machine to shut down is to hold down the on/off button on the back of the computer.  This has been a problem for quite some time and may have started with Lion, but I’m not sure.  Any help is appreciated.

    Hi...
Before you shut down, make sure you "quit" all open applications. Applications are running if you see the small blue reflection under the app's name in your Dock.
If necessary, you can force quit apps... several ways to do this.  One, from your Apple menu > Force Quit or using the Activity Monitor located in /Applications/Utilities.
If it's not a question of open applications, try Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC)
