Outboard drive / loosing songs / slow performance in iTunes

OK- I have xp and I have 65,000 songs using up 400gb of a terabite drive.
I have iTunes on my C:/ drive and all the music on my (72000rpm) (E:) TB drive.
1) I get arbitary skips on playback. I have the itunes buffer set to large.
2)on launch of itunes I get nothing, re-launch, re-launch, re-launch etc... sometimes it will launch or I re-load a new itunes from the site and start over. I did do the set to headphones out so well see on that.
3) BIG THING is I need to reload the music all the time into itunes and I loose songs! down from 65,000 to 57,100??????
Any help would be great!!!

Biggest caution to be aware of when using external drive is to have it plugged in and mounted before starting iTunes. Otherwise iTunes defaults library to default location.
This doesn't help with issue 1. Playback from external is limited to bandwidth of your interface. If you are using USB, I would expect problems due to the bandwidth sharing nature of USB.
Issue 2 should be able to be avoided by making drive available before starting iTunes. Doing this I have never had library problems. I don't know what headphones would have to do with it. Why are you meaning with that?
Issue 3 is strange. I have only had to do this once and that was after program update.

  • Airport Express and USB Hard drive and extremely slow performance

    HI Guys,
I seem to having a lot of trouble with an Airport express and a Lacie 1TB drive. While I have solved several problems by updating firmware and enabling journalling on the Lacie, I am still having problems with extremely slow performance with my macbook, particularly using itunes and Firefox.
Any ideas and any further information needed?

I formatted it using the Lacie setup program for Mac and later enabled it for journalling using Disk utility. This seemed to solve a lot of the recognition problems I was having, however the I-Tunes and firefox performance is still atrocious. If I do Need to completely reformat it using Disk Utility, will I lose my files on the disk now?
not if you move them to a temporary location before you start.
yes, you are better of formatting the drive with DU.

  • Slow performance of iTunes store with TV show favorites?

I am wondering if anyone else has been seeing performance problems with the Apple TV when using the iTunes store and TV show favorites? I am having issues with the iTunes store account when I log into my 'Favorites' for TV programs. It takes a LONG time to log in and bring up my favorites list (like 2 minutes sometimes!), and sometimes it will fail and say the iTunes store is not available.
Yet browsing around the store without loading my favorites everything is peachy. Usually once I get into the favorites and load a show, it will play, although sometimes it thinks I have not purchased an episode when I have a season pass, and ask me to purchase it. If I click purchase, it tells me it is already purchased and would I like to download it, and then it plays.
I have a lot of shows in my favorites list now, so I think the system is getting overloaded or something and is having issues due to the number of shows I have in my favorites list? It was always way faster when I had less shows in my favorites list.
Also, when I start having connection errors if I restart my Apple TV it usually works much better (but still slow). Rebooting my router makes not difference (Apple Airport Extreme) and both of my Apple TV's exhibit the same problems in the bedroom or living room.
None of this is running on WiFi either; it is all hard cabled.
Honestly I think the iTunes store servers are getting overloaded when trying to deal with customer accounts that have a lot of favorites in the cloud? Has anyone else been experiencing the same problem?

I would guess that the Singapore itunes store does not sell these things.  If they did, then you would see them.

  • Is this slow performance when importing CD's into iTunes ?

    Hi,
My new iMac 20" arrived this weekend. Since then I've been getting acquainted, being new to Macs. I wanted to build up my iTunes library, so I grabbed a box of my CDs and began importing them one by one. I was expecting my new iMac to really fly through them after reading the reviews of how much faster the new Core 2 Duo are over previous iMacs. I remember a table of stats in the MacWorld reviews, and for iTunes test, these machines were clocked at under 2 minutes for whatever it was they ripped in iTunes. YMMV certainly applies, but I was setting my expectation that my iMac could rip a CD in 2 - 3 minutes.
Umm, my experience is way off that. In fact, I would say my iMac took about as long to rip a CD as my 7 year old Dell PC with 256 MB of mem and a first gen Pent 5.
I decided to pick a CD and time how long it takes to import on my iMac, then take same CD and time how long it takes to import into iTunes on his new PC.
CD - Rush, Moving Pictures, 7 songs, 39.8 min, 403.1 MB
    Encoding - AAC, 192 kbps
My rig - iMac 20", 2 GB RAM, 256 MB VRAM, Core 2 Duo and 250 HB with latest version of OS X
My son's rig - intel D955xbklkr socket 775 atx mobo, intel pentium D840 3.2 GHz processor, Corsair twinx pc5400 DDR2 667 Mhz mem ( 2 x 1024 mb ), HD - Seagate 250 GB SATA2 7K with 16 MB buffer, Pioneer DVR-111D DVD burner, and XFX 7600GS extreme graphics card, Win XP Pro, SP2 ( we built this beast with gaming in mind, with his own money ) * the CPU and memory are NOT overclocked and no other tweaks. just build it, install it and run it.
    The results:
    iMac - 7 minutes
    PC - 2 minutes
I ran the import twice on each machine and came up with the same results.
Neither machine was running anything else at the time.
Granted there are some differences between the machines that should account for some differences, especially on the hard drive, with SATA2 and a nice 16 MB cache ( it's one sweet HD ) on the PC, but this difference is huge. We're not talking 20, 40 or 60 % faster on the PC. This was > 3x faster, so basically over 300% faster.
Anyone have an idea ? Without digging into the specs, I'd say the DVD drives should be able to read equally fast, the Core 2 Duo 2.1 GHz with 4 MB cache should be equal if not superior to the older, D 820 3.2 GHz, the memory is the same speed, but I'm not sure about system bus speed on the P C ( 800 MHz ? ). Graphics cards don't factor into this equation, but the HD probably plays a big role, and I think the Seagate in my son's PC has the iMac beat hands down.
What are other iMac C2D owners seeing for average import times ?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    Trevor,
When you say your superdrive rips, the import speeds are typically around 20x, what encoding method and bit rate are you using ?
I imported another CD and watched for what import speed numbers were displayed. Routinely, they hovered around 8x and sometimes up to 12 or 13x, but never higher. I was told by someone at our local user's group meeting that ripping at AAC 192kbps was a double-pass, I think that was the words they used, and therefore slower. ( Many members thought 7 minutes to rip was typical ) I'm not so sure if that means the drive will only spin at half it's rated max speed ? Anyway, I walked over to my son's PC with the CD and ripped it at AAC 192kbps to his iTunes library. The numbers I saw were from 18x to frequently 23, 24 and sometimes briefly to about 26x. His drive has a max of 40x. By my reasoning, anything that would cause iTunes to rip this CD at a slower speed, whether due to the encoding rate or the CD's surface condition, should affect both computers equally, yes ? Yet the drive on the PC performed on average at twice the rate of the iMac. I think it's safe to say the rip speed is comfortably within the operating margins of both drives.
I'm not yet fully convinced this is normal for an iMac. My CD are in excellent shape. I'm the only one who uses them and I handle them with about as much care as the old audiofiles used to when they handled their vinyl LPs ( well, at least not as far as wearing cotton gloves and sweeping the dust off ). Most of them have absolutely no visible scratches or oily finger prints on their surfaces. I might experiment and see what rates I get if I use MP3 or a lower bit rate for AAC.

  • ITunes 10.1 (64-bit) slow performance

    Hello all,
I have recently bought a new pc, a very fast machine (see details below), but I'm experiencing bad performance with iTunes 10.1 (64-bit) for windows.
I don't have a lot of stuff in iTunes, I have about 120 apps, 500 songs, 1200 photos, couple of ringtones and 0 videos in my library. The whole iTunes interface responds slowly. Like clicking on Music, Videos, my iPhone in the side menu makes iTunes freeze for a couple of seconds and then switches to the screen. Even after loading a screen iTunes is freezed for a seconds before it's responsive.
I've googled around for a while, and got some tips to disable some options in the preference window, so I've set all unnecessary things off, like: crossfadings songs, automatic update checking, looking for devices, automatic organizing, ping, genius, shared libraries, etc. but it doesn't speed up iTunes much.
It gets even worse whenever I connect my iPhone 3G (Fw 4.2.1, 16GB, Black). iTunes simply freezes for like half a minute and the pc makes a few beeping noises because of connecting an usb-device. Even Windows 7 slows down a lot while connecting. iTunes gets responsive once my iPhone appears under devices in the side menu.
Software I have constantly running in the backround are: AVG anti-virus free edition, SQL Server 2008, Steam and Skype. Turning off these softwares doesn't make a difference as well. There are no virusses or whatever on my pc. I let AVG anti-virus do a complete scan like once a week.
Taskmanager shows iTunes using about 240,000K of memory, followed by steam with 70,000k of memory and skype with 30,000k of memory.
Anyone else experiencing slow performance or know how to resolve this ?
    System details:
    Windows 7 64-bit
    Intel i7 950 @ 3.06GHz quad core processor
    6gigs of ddr3 (1600mhz) memory
Ocz vertex2 ssd (The O/S and all music, photos, apps are on this disk)
    nvidia graphics card gtx460

Same with me! I recently bought a new laptop, and iTunes 9 was working just fine. It takes like 5 seconds to scroll down one line. Clicking on different tabs and things takes forever as well. I am not sure what is causing it yet, but like you, I have disabled all sorts of iTunes settings which has not helped yet. Hopefully Apple will fix this problem soon! Let me know if you find a way to solve this.
My PC Specs which are well above the minimum requirements:
    Asus UL80Jt
    Windows 7 64-Bit
Intel i3 330UM Dual Core Processor @ 1.2GHz (ASUS Overclocking to 1.7 GHz)
    4GB RAM
    1.3 GB Dedicated Video RAM

  • How to fix iTunes extremely laggy/slow performance?

Hi, does anybody know of a way to fix iTunes' extremely slow performance?
Just about every action in iTunes takes ages to perform. Below are two YouTube movies demonstrating the problem.
    Examples:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AGSQZ50GPa0
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDFHRejnA4A
    Thanks in advance,

ps. iTunes used is the newest iTunes 8.0.1.11

Definitely NOT a Windows only problem! It happens on my PowerBook G4 (I've even added more memory with no improvement - it's beginning to drive me mad!) It's specifically an iTunes 8 problem (iTunes 7 was absolutely fine for me - no problems at all). Unfortunately I can't reinstall iTunes 7 because I updated my iPhone firmware which then locked me into using iTunes 8...so essentially Apple locks you into using iTunes 8 even though it's crap and slow.

  • My computer crashed and I lost my hard drive. I have downloaded the itunes to my new pc.  How do I sync my Iphone without loosing everything??

My computer crashed and I lost my hard drive.  I have downloaded the Itunes on my new computer.   I am afraid to sync my I phone as I don't want to loose everything on it and my I Tunes is blank - not what I had previously. ????  Can someone advise?

Prevent automatic syncing one time, without changing settings:  Open iTunes. Then, as you connect iPhone to your computer, press and hold Shift-Control (on a PC) until you see iPhone appear in the sidebar. Then, use iTunes File menu > Transfer Purchases from XXX's iPhone.  This will transfer your purchased items.
For your other stuff you will need a 3rd party utility.  Find  discussion of them here
Unlike music and video purchases, iTunes Store Apps can be downloaded again without charge.  This explains how: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519

  • Backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

Help! My husband backed up my songs from itunes onto a hard drive and now my playlists in itunes are gone from my library! How do I retrieve them back to the way it was before?

    Hello Nataroo007,
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities!
There is a file in the iTunes library folder that contains your playlist information is the iTunes Library.xml file.
Try and find the file, usually located in one of these locations depending on your OS:
    Operating System
    Default location of iTunes Folder
    Mac OS X
    /Users/[your username]/Music
    Microsoft Windows XP
    \Documents and Settings\[your username]\My Documents\My Music\
    Microsoft Windows Vista
    \Users\[your username]\Music\
    Microsoft Windows 7
    \Users\[your username]\My Music\
Then you can import this file to your iTunes Library like this:
    1. Choose File > Library > Import Playlist.
    2. Navigate to the "iTunes Library.xml" file
    3. Windows users: Click Open.
If your Podcasts list in iTunes is empty after following these steps, learn how to add them back into iTunes.
Note: information in this post comes from article:

  • My hard drive crashed and i lost my itunes and all my songs...

as the title says my hard drive n my laptop crashed again and i lost my itunes and all of my songs on that cpu. however, i still have all of my songs on my ipod nano....when i get my laptop back from being fixed does anyone know if i will be able to put the songs back onto my itunes because i dont want to have to pay for them again. thanks

Go here for an iPod to PC step by step instructions using 3rd party software http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/articles/comments/copying-music-from-ipod-to-co mputer/
Then soon as you do this back up ASAP by going here http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/musicstore/backup/
If your harddrive ever crashes again, and you connect your iPod to that empty iTunes library, or your PC crashes and your iPod starts acting up you will be screwed if you don't have a backup

I store my itunes library on an external drive shared between 2 computers and itunes on computer A isn't seeing or showing the songs I added using itunes on computer B. How to fix this?

I don't know if this is me adding files to iTunes when the external wasn't connected
    it is.
is it OK to just keep deleting that library on the Air?
    i wouldn't - at least not until i
    mount the external
point iTunes media folder location back to the external via preferences > advanced
consolidate my library via file > library > organize library
The ntfs hasn't seem to be causing any problems, but I've always wanted to know.
in order for your Mac to write to NTFS drives, it needs some help by installing e.g. the NTFS 3G driver. apparently that or something similar is installed on your Mac already. preferably, it would be formatted for Mac but then windows machines would need to have e.g. MacDrive installed to recognize the drive.

  • I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) Would it let me get them back?

I had all my iTunes music backed up onto a hard drive; but the hard drive was stolen along with all the files I backed up onto it. However, the songs I had in iTunes still show up (I just can't play them.) If I were to use iCloud, would it still take those songs and let me listen to them (and maybe re-download them?) Or am I out of luck?

Open iTunes, go to the iTunes Store, and then go to Purchased on the right hand side under Music Quick Links.
You can re-download all the songs, apps, or books you have previously purchased.
I'm not sure if this is a requirement, but just in case, make sure you download the latest version of iTunes (v10.3) too.

  • Very slow performance; external boot drive the cause?

    Greetings.
I bought a 500 GB Hitachi drive for my iMac intending to install it myself. But, alas, I have an iSight iMac and I think it's beyond my ability to do the job. A Mac dealer nearby can do it for me, but wants the computer for two or three days, even thought the installation takes about an hour. They will not make an appointment for me to come in with it and wait.
So I installed it the drive in an OWC Mercury Elite case, cloned the original drive, and have been booting from the Hitachi via Firewire 400. Just about everything is running at well under previous speeds. Lightroom now takes as much as two to five minutes to spool a large file for printing and sometimes does not even send the file to the printer (in fairness, the latter issue happened sometimes with the internal drive – I wrote about it here before – but at least it didn't take a long time to spool the file, which has to happen each time I click "print" until at last it actually goes to the printer).
I'm getting slow performance from Safari (4.1.3), Mail (2.1.3), Lighroom 2, Photoshop (CS3). I can't say I've noticed problems elsewhere, but I rarely use other applications.
I have done all the usual maintenance tasks, besides those the computer does automatically. Repaired permissions. Emptied caches. Burned sage. Etc.
If this is the inevitable result of running from an external disk, then I'll have to brave the installation or pay someone to do it (which I would do immediately if I knew someone who would do it "while-u-wait").
If, however, this sounds like booting from the external drive should not be the problem, and there is something I might do to speed things up, I'd be grateful for your suggestions.
    As always, thank you.
    Leonard B.

Too bad about the site redesign. I had a draft of this message started, then got busy. Now I have no idea where to look for it. (And what happened to the Preview function?)
ANYWAY…  I talked to a tech person at Other World Computing about the problem. He was of the opinion that the iMac SHOULD be showing some slower response if booted from the external drive, but that maybe the sluggishness in this case was excessive. He had me run a hardware scan to see whether there were any bad blocks. After 24 hours, Speed Tools reported no problems. So now I have run every diagnostic and repair tool I know of and every one that was suggested (every one that I own, that is), and the computer is still hesitating so much that I just have to get up and walk away from it sometimes in order to stay sane.
I am booting from the original hard drive when I have to do extended internet research (Safari being the biggest speed offender), but run the iMac from the external drive when I have to do photo editing, since all my preferences, Lightroom libraries, etc., are located there. If I had the time to figure out just where the essential, and relevant, system and application files are located, I suppose that I could copy them and move them onto the internal drive. Then I could just use the external for storage of the image files (can't do that on the internal; there's not enough space). However, if what is going on (slowness issue) is indicative of a faulty drive, I'd rather not use it at all, even as a storage or backup drive.
Any thoughts? Do you suppose this might be a problem with the computer, not with the new drive? I'd hate to ask OWC to exchange it (even if they would do that) and then find out I've got the same trouble.
    Thanks again in advance.
    Leonard

  • New laptop, windows 8. iTunes stored on external hard drive. Songs are synching fine. But no playlists?

Hi. Bought  new laptop, with windows 8. Always keep my iTunes library on an external hard drive which I hooked up to the new laptop. Downloaded iTunes. Pointed iTunes at the iTunes folder on the external hard drive. Songs synched up fine, but none of my playlists show up. They are still on my iPod classic. So I do not want to synch the ipod to itunes for fear of losing them. Would the playlists not still be on the external hard drive? Went to File: Library: Import playlist and tried several folders  within iTunes folder, but this does not work. Anyone know which folder exactly I should import from? At a loss, any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

When you put your library on the external drive did you put the whole iTunes folder there or just the music files? If you put the whole folder on the external then your iTunes library file should be on there too. Try holding down the Shift key in Windows when opening iTunes. In the resulting dialogue you will get the option to create a new library or navigate to an existing one. Look in the iTunes folder on your external drive for the library file (they have the extension .itl) and open it: How to open an alternate iTunes Library file
