Outboard monitor for laptop G4

I have a really old Ibook laptop. It doesn't even have a video output. How can I hookup an outboard monitor? Can I use some sort of a firewire or USB adapter? is any add-on software necessary? Please advise.

If your computer is a white iBook G4 (or an iBook G3) it would have
a mini-VGA port and that requires an adapter in order to attach an
external VGA display's plug, so it can work in the mini-VGA port.
Earlier, some had a 'composite' or 'VGA' type of port, this evolved.

If the computer is an older non-white (colors) G3 iBook, it may have
an AV port for composite video-out to a TV; this may have a mini-
port, unique in the FireWire equipped G3 (colors) and later, where it
was possible for audio and video to be shared externally. With the
correct adapter, and the presence of a mini-port for video VGA out,
you may be able to connect some kind of external display.

Since this feature evolved and the technologies changed over time,
to identify more precisely what model you have, is very important.

  • How do I use my late 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output.

May be this question has been asked thousand times. how do I use my mid 2011 iMac ( with thunderbolt) as external monitor for laptop/Xbox or other device with hdmi as output. if apple hasn't removed that feature and has just moved that functinoality to thunderbolt then how can I use it. currently there is no laptop available with thunderbolt output. no 3rd party converter available. whats the use of having feature on latest functionality if we cant use it. I wish they would have made one port has mini-dvi and other thunderbolt for backward compatibility untill some vendor comes up with converter.

    It Says :
Mac (21.5-inch, Mid 2011) and iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) and later computers support Target Display Mode via Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt cable (2 m) when the source is another Thunderbolt-equipped computer.
Name one computer model/vendor which has thunderbolt as output for display + audio. this is so stupid to move to new technology without availbility of its compatible devices.

  • EMac as monitor for laptop

Does anyone know if it's possible to use an eMac as a second monitor for a Powerbook? I'm running one of the new 15" G4 Powerbooks, and would love to put my largely unused eMac to better use.

Take a look at the post immediately below yours (at this moment, anyway): Will Woodgate, "eMac as a PC monitor?", 01:07pm Oct 31, 2005 CDT

  • Use imac monitor for laptop display?

Just curious, I've got a new mac book pro but the screen size just isn't sufficient for some applications. My 24" imac works great for it, but since this is my work laptop I'm not supposed to put these files on my home computer (not to mention the programs). So, I want to know if there is any way to use my imac monitor as a display for my laptop.
I know there isn't just a DVI in port on the imac, but there's got to be a way to do this... If it were a PC I'd say remote desktop.

christie.cone, Welcome to the discussion area!
Not directly the iMac does NOT have a video input.
However, you might want to take a look at ScreenRecycler.

  • External monitor for laptop not working

I just purchased this laptop and am trying to hook up an additional monitor.  When I install the HDMI cable laptop screen goes dark and monitor screen remains dark.  If I unplug the HDMI cable the laptop screen comes back.  If i try to "adjust" the display in control panel i can only see the laptop screen.  If I turn off external monitor and turn back on a message saying cable not attached is displayed before screen goes dark.  I'm really in dark - need help. Thanks

The F4 was the solution for getting the laptop screen back, but i'm still unable to see anything on the external monitor.  I have it recognized in the Control panel and all connections are correct.  Could it be a setting with my NVIDIA GTX 950M video card?  If so how do i change.  By the way i checked the drivers for this and they are up to date. Now only half in the dark! LC

  • Can I use an older aple desk top, about 5 or 6 years old as a monitor for a new apple laptop

  • Is it possible use an iMac 21,5" as secondary monitor for windows 7 laptop

    Hello everybody,
Recently (less than one year ago) i bought an iMac 21,5".
Now i would like to use it as secondary monitor for my laptop. (My laptop runs Windows 7).
Is it possible? (I found conflicting opinions on the web, even on the Apple forum).
What type of cable do I need?
(I will appreciate also a link to the product on some online store: preferably apple store, but also amozon, ebay, etc.)
    Thank you in advance.

    SOrry to say, but no.
The 2011 iMacs can only be used as a second display via a Thunderbolt-to-Thunderbolt cable.
The other way around (from Thunderbolt-to-DisplayPort) would work.

  • Using new iMac as a monitor for PC Laptop

    Greetings,
I am trying to use my new iMac as a monitor for my work laptop (compaq). Can this be done? If so, how do I do it? Thanks in advance for any help.

As tintinlad says there are software solutions that use VNC connections (link). Hardware solutions exisit but only at Standard Definition TV quality.

BTW, Apple stopped selling iMac G5s in Jan 2006. Your new iMac is presumably an Intel iMac instead.

  • Use iMac as monitor for a PC laptop

Can i use my iMac (2009) as a monitor for a Windows 7 Laptop?

If you cannot hard wire the iMac to your PC as a monitor, you can try using Windows Remote Desktop (RDP) to connect to it if it's on the same network.
Works almost the same, except you are managing your laptop from your iMac.
You can download RDP here: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/remote-desktop-client

  • Use 2008 iMac as second monitor for pc laptop

I have a 2008 iMac and wish to use it as a second monitor for my wife's laptop.  I originally bought a mini display port to vga adaptor cable and realized that it would not work.  I have to go back and buy the mini DVI to vga adapter cable to use it.  But in scouring the google links - I saw that it might not work.  It had said for 2011 and above it might, but did not mention earlier models.  I could use some direction.  If it not possible, I would rather not go and buy a new cable and try.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks  .

You need to set up Virtual Network Computing.

  • Use laptop as second monitor for hp touchsmart 310-1020

Product name: HP TouchSmart 310-1020 PC.
    OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
Can I use my laptop as a second monitor for my HP? It doesn't have an hdmi port, so is there any software or converters someone suggests?

Sorry to say, but it won't be possible - any video ports on your notebook will be output only.
Actually that's not what the OP asked, and it's incorrect since you're not answering the question he asked. There are software packages out there that will let the OP do what they want between multiple PCs. Multiplicity by Stardock is a quick example http://www.stardock.com/products/multiplicity/ and it's only $30

  • Can i use 21.5 mac as monitor for windows laptop

Would i be able to use the new 21.5" imac as monitor for HP elitebook 2560p?  i have docking station for laptop.  I went to the apple store and received nothing but confusing/contradictory information.  Please help.

In the current lineup, only the 27" iMac supports a miniDisplayPort input.
There are other differences too - the video processor, CPU options, disk options.

  • Monitor or TV for laptop

    Hello,
I am looking to buy a bigger monitor for my work computer, its a laptop, compaq presario F700.  I am hoping to get something around 32" or bigger.  I saw a good deal on 32" TV's on the website but I'm not sure if they will work or not.  I use 2 monitors right now at work, the laptop screen and an additional computer monitor (this is the one I'd like to be bigger).  It doesn't have to be high definition, just big.  I stare at the screen for many hours a day and my eyes get tired by the end of the day.  So my question is what do I need to look for on a TV that would work with my laptop and/or what is the best deal on products you have that would give me the most size for the buck that will work with this laptop.

well thats where I'm having trouble.  I'm trying to find a product that i can buy online without going to the store and physically looking at the TV to see if has a VGA input.  The pictures on the website don't show all the inputs and outputs.  I am looking at a TV and it says it has a component video input and a composite input, I don't know what these are or if they'd work.  It also has 2 HDMI inputs.  No mention of VGA and the chart that shows what all inputs it may or maynot have does not include VGA.  Soooo..... how do I tell which TV have a VGA?  If they don't, is there some sort of adapter I can get?

  • Compaq Laptop as monitor for a Mac Mini

I was wondering if it would be able to use a Compaq laptop as a monitor for a Mac Mini because I want to be able to easily switch between Mac and PC for as cheap as possible I would like to use the laptop as a monitor for the Mini.
    Thanks a lot,
    Alex

    Richard,
Unless the Compaq has a video
    i input
this is not possible. However, you can use VNC to control your mini from your Compaq. If this is an option for you depends on the intended use for your mini.
