Outdated Online Adobe Reader Fixes - An Opinion

With a company as huge as Adobe, and the fact that this company has been online for many, many years, maybe that's why any current "fixes" for the current up to date Adobe Reader have been ignored...?  Perusing through these so called fixes when the reader installed on my computer crashes, all I see is reference to IE 8, 9, and sometimes 10, but nothing referring to the latest up to date IE browser IE 11 (11.0.9600.1710715 (11.0.8 (KB2953522)))...  My operating system is an up to date Windows 8.1 64-bit system, but from what I am reading, the reader works better on a 32-bit system...  And, even though I have the latest up to date Flash player "built-in to IE 11, I still get error messages from Adobe, or IE, that my Flash player is "out of date" when attempting to play online video at various sites...
Sifting through the countless "support" FAQs and "community" boards is an extremely time consuming process and it isn't a guarantee I will find a solution to my problem...
The impression Adobe has left me is one of a huge corporate giant, in the software field, that is more concerned with its bottom line and stock holders...  Whatever Adobe software, as is true with 99% of the software out there, is what is new today, it is antiquated and out-of-date by the end of the next day - at least one would think so with the enormous amount of advertising  "you just have to have this new and better" updated Adobe program even though you just installed that "newest and better" program just yesterday...!
I seriously doubt that the answer as to why the current and up to date Adobe Reader XI (11.0.07) installed on my computer keeps crashing - in spite of "repairing" the installation - can be found here or anywhere Adobe has an online presence...  When a software company wants to lay the blame of their software program not working at the feet of the browser community, then I can only imagine they are not really that serious about helping the consumers who use their products...
I know this missive is but a whisper amongst the roar of "business as usual" for this software behemoth and it will go totally unnoticed to any tech person worth their salt to post a real solution as to why Adobe Reader crashes when using Windows 8.1 and IE 11...

Pat... It's been a busy time, but just wanted to update you with my situation with Adobe Reader...
Ended up uninstalling everything Adobe and only reinstalled what I only needed for reading PDFs and watching flash videos - Adobe Reader and reinstalled Flash...
I have given up on IE 11, which has been part of the problem, and now use FireFox, which so far seems to be holding up...  (No more MS-Outlook, either; now I use Thunderbird (Mozilla) for my email system)
The latest SNAFU situation - a long story I won't bore you with - concerns Microsoft and their licensing policy..
Seems the license key I had for the MS-Office Pro Plus program I had installed on my computer back in 2012, using the DVD purchased from MS via my work place, who set up the deal with an outside vendor, who offered the software at the unbelievable price of $9.95, also unscrupulously re-sold the same license key at least four other times...  So, after two years my installation of MS-Office Pro Plus started acting wiggy...
Microsoft told me I had installed it four times according to their records, which I hadn't...  Microsoft (a Costa Rican rep) said I could pay $100 to buy a new license key and said the key could only be purchased through one of Microsoft's many outsourced support centers around the world, but not in the United States...  I told him MS could put that offer where the sun don't shine...
Okay, so much for sparing your the "long story"...
Anyway, my Adobe problem seems to have been fixed and IE will very soon be but a memory on my computer (hmmm, maybe not; that could still cause problems)...
Thanks again for all your feedback to my earlier "rant"...  Appreciate it...

Is there a compatibility issue with Adobe Reader XI 11.0.10 and the pdf scan program fro an Epson WF-3540 All In One?  Is it an Epson Problem?  Is it because the "source" shown in Properties from an Epson is a PDF 5.xx file?  I can't understand why I can e-mail the item and get it to appear in the online Adobe reader, but if I try to save it to my computer drives it comes out with blank (gray) pages again. Is it a Win7 problem?  Help I have a lot of scanning to do and only know everything was fine until about ten days to two weeks ago.  Don't know if an update for Epson, Win7, or Adobe might be problem.

Thank you very much.! Two weeks of very frustrating uninstalls, reinstalls, cursing, moaning and  thinking about buying a new scanner all solved with the check in the box.  I have no idea how it got unchecked, as I never mess around with things that work.  Incidentally, I got a "Fraud Detection Alert" on ~grafitti's message.  When I went to the Adobe page and read the answer, I could not find the "Correct" button anywhere.  Please see that ~grafitti gets some more points.

The icon bounces once, then the little triangle disappears. This problem started around August 24th. This is on an eMac (PPC). No new software of any kind has been installed on this mac, and in fact the only changes to the system were automatic updates from Apple.
No apple-branded applications have been affected (eg. mail, safari, preview all still launch fine).
This is making me leery of automatic updates. Can I trust Apple not to bork my machine after this?

  • Adobe Reader X Problem signing online PDF

This issue has started a couple of weeks ago. Users are running Windows 7 and Adobe Reader X.  When accessing a PDF online users are unable
to digitally sign with certificates. When trying to sign it asks them to save the document. If they save the document then it will allow them to sign, However
they are no longer working with an online document, but rather the one they saved on their desktop. They need to be able to sign on line because the form
needs to be submitted on line.
I have already checked the preferences for internet and it is selected to open pdf in a browser. When going to the security configuration the certificates from the CAC card are available and selected as sign with.
Anyone have any ideas? Our support for this issue is on another network and they are not having this issue so they are blowing us off.

When opening a pdf document in Adobe Reader the font of the original document is changed....It becomes a mix of the original font and a new different font. How can i fix this

This issue occurs with most of the PDFs that I open up. I am using the latest version of adobe reader on my windows based machine and it is a general PDF. I saw a similar post online stating that if you look at the fonts used in the document and it doesn't say (Embedded) next to it, then Adobe Reader will try to pull the font(s) from your computer and if it doesn't find that font then it will replace it which makes it look funny.

  • How to resolve issues when using Adobe Reader DC with LEED Online?

This morning I downloaded Adobe Reader DC however now I am no longer able save the PDF in LEED Online.  How do I resolve this issue or revert back to the older version of Adobe Reader?

Before the DC version we were able to save our passwords from University of Phoenix and when opening the document saved to our computer it would unlock automatically.  This new version DC will not allow this even when you say Yes.
The Right Column in previous versions would allow to disable until requested to appear this version it opens regardless.

  • Can I obtain a CD-ROM with the latest revision of Adobe Reader for a Windows XP system w/ Service Pack 3. I do not want to go online with this system. I have dedicated it to read all of my PDF Files only.

I have 4 computer systems, 2 of which run under Windows XP w/ Service Pack 3. I have dedicated these systems to the task of reading all of my PDF Files which I have collected from my recent college career. The desktop system I want to use is an old Dell Optiplex GX240 with Acrobat Reader 4.0. The other Windows XP system I have is an old HP Laptop with Adobe Reader 8.1.4 installed. I want to update both systems to the latest version that is available for Windows XP w/Service Pack 3 installed. So, because I do not want to place these system online, would it be possible for me to obtain a copy of the Adobe Reader software I need on a CD-ROM? - Ken DeWitt, a 68-Year-Young Vietnam Veteran and recent college graduate...Summa Cum Laude.

  • Conflict between Adobe Acrobat and Adobe Reader and how I fixed it

For the past 5 years, I have owned Adobe Acrobat version 9, and recently installed Adobe Reader as well (version 10.7). I was previously able to set up Firefox to use Acrobat to display PDF files in the browser without downloading them, but I recently noticed that this was no longer the case. Instead, every PDF file I tried to view was being downloaded instead. I came here to find a solution, and discovered that many other people are having similar problems. I followed the instructions given here (https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/view-pdf-files-firefox-without-downloading-them), but found that they were actually UNhelpful. They tell you to turn off the Firefox PDF viewer by editing about:config to disable the file pdfs.js, which is the native Firefox PDF viewer-- but that will cause the PDF file type to disappear from the Tools/Options dialog, so you can't assign it to another program (whether Adobe or anything else). This makes it impossible to assign the Adobe plugin to open PDF files. I did figure out a solution on my own, and wanted to post it here to help other users with the same problem.
I ultimately learned, through trial and error and a lot of research both here and on Adobe's website, that the root cause of my problem was a conflict in Firefox between Acrobat and Reader. I was able to solve it by upgrading Acrobat, getting rid of Reader and enabling the Firefox PDF viewer so that I could assign the PDF file type to the Acrobat plugin within Firefox. Here are the details of my problem and how I solved it:
    1. Acrobat and Reader conflict with each other in Firefox, but this isn't totally Firefox's fault. It's mostly Adobe's fault, and they pretty much admit it. Specifically, they say that Acrobat and Reader can't coexist on the same machine unless both are version 10 or higher. They tell you to upgrade to solve the problem--but I can't afford to pay for a new version of Acrobat. If you have to keep Acrobat 9.x, Adobe says the lowest version of Reader that will work with it is Reader 11. I couldn't upgrade to this because I have Vista, and Adobe hasn't issued Reader 11 for Vista (and doesn't plan to). I did cheat and download the Win 7 version of Reader 11, but it didn't help.
    2. If you have both Acrobat and Reader, you can choose a setting in Reader to make it the default PDF handler--but Firefox ignores this information and defaults to Acrobat no matter what. (This is the part we can blame Firefox for.) If you have a version of Acrobat which is below 9.5.5, Firefox actually blocks it as a security risk, so the plugin won't work at all, regardless of version number. That's why PDFs are being downloaded through your standalone program instead of being displayed in the browser. If you want to view PDFs in Firefox and keep Acrobat on your computer, you MUST upgrade Acrobat to version 9.5.5 or above.
    3. Unless you can upgrade Acrobat to at least 10.x, GET RID OF READER. As long as you can access Acrobat 9.5.5, it will work fine in Firefox and there's no need for Reader. I never used to have Reader myself, only Acrobat, but it must have been downloaded automatically when Acrobat was blocked by Firefox (which I didn't even realize).
    4. IF YOU NEED TO UPGRADE ACROBAT 9.X TO 9.5.5, YOUR LAST CHANCE IS TODAY--6/26/13. Adobe has announced that today is the "end of life" for the Acrobat 9.x platform, and all support and upgrades will cease after today.
When I searched for updates by going to Adobe's website, it told me there were none available--but when I checked for them FROM THE ACROBAT PROGRAM ITSELF (Help/Check for updates), I was offered a 300 MB upgrade that took me all the way from version 9.0 to 9.5.5 in one step. (It did take a very long time to download and install.)
    5. Once you have Acrobat 9.5.5, this is how to enable it in Firefox:
    a. INSIDE ACROBAT, set your preference for "Internet" to "view PDF files in browser." Close Acrobat. Close Firefox if it's already open.
    b. Reopen Firefox. Check Tools/Add-Ons/Plugins to make sure the Acrobat plugin is there. Enable it if disabled. Close Firefox.
If the plugin isn't there at all, repair your Acrobat installation through Control Panel. Then return to Firefox and enable it. Close Firefox.
    c. Reopen Firefox again. Go to Tools/Options and check the list of file types. For the names that contain "Adobe" and "Acrobat," Acrobat should be set as the default program to open them. Select it from the drop-down list if it's not. Continue to scroll through the alphabetical list--you should see another entry called Portable Document Format. If it's there, the default will be "preview in Firefox." You should be able to change this to "Acrobat (in Firefox)" using the drop-down menu. Do NOT pick the option that says "Acrobat"--this is the standalone program and will cause your PDFs to be downloaded.
If you don't see "Acrobat (in Firefox)" as an option, this means your plugin is not working. Go back and fix it using the instructions above (including repair of Acrobat if necessary).
    d. If you don't see a file type for "Portable Document Format" at all, that means the Firefox PDF viewer is disabled. You must enable it by editing the about:config file. To see it, type about:config in the Firefox address bar. You will get a warning message--just click OK and keep going.
This file is a long list of statements in alphabetical order. LOOK FOR A STATEMENT THAT SAYS "pdfjs.disabled" with a Boolean value of "true." Select this statement and right-click. A context menu will offer you choices including "Toggle." Select that one, which will change the Boolean value to "false." Exit about:config. Close Firefox.
    e. Now return to Tools/Options, scroll through the list of file types, and you should see "Portable Document Format." Select "Acrobat (in Firefox)" as in the instructions above. Close Firefox.
    f. The first time you try to open a PDF file in Firefox, you may get a dialog box which offers you choices of how to open the file. The first will be Acrobat, but DON'T CHOOSE THAT--it will cause your PDF to download. Instead, go to the choice that says "Open as application/pdf." You don't need to change the program that opens this file type, because your settings are already correct. Your PDF should open in the browser, with the full-featured Acrobat menu (including the option of editing or saving the file).
I hope other users can benefit from the truly painful experience I had figuring all of this out. Good luck.

  • Adobe Reader won't open automatically when clicking on online form link

I created a form in LiveCycle Designer, reader-enabled it, and then it was uploaded to a university website for students to access to apply for graduation from an advanced degree program. However, when students click the link, the dreaded "Please wait...If this message is not eventually replaced by the proper contents of the document, your PDF viewer may not be able to display this type of document. [...]" appears. In the top right corner of the browser, a little button that says "Open with different viewer" is also displayed, which has to be pressed and then Adobe Reader has to be manually selected to open the form...the problem is that students are not aware of the button in the corner and simply believe the form is not working properly. To avoid the many frantic student calls as they get the "error" message, I was wondering if there is a way to upload a form to default to the Adobe Reader, without having to set this on every machine individually. I don't know much about the website portion of this project, so any ideas or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. If this is something that could be set on the form end itself (although I am not sure how you would), please also let me know. I have attached the screen shots with the first error message and the button in the top right and the selection for the viewer that comes up after pressing the button (once you select the reader in this step, it opens just fine). If there is any additional information I should provide to solve this problem, just let me know.
The form is linked online at http://www.uccs.edu/Documents/graduateschool/CORRECT%20Application%20for%20Admission%20to% 20Candidacy%208_22_14.pdf
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on the issue.

You are using either the built-in Mozilla PDF Viewer or the built-in Chrome PDF VIewer and have a LiveCycle Designer XFA form being viewed.  You need to configure the web browser accordingly.
XFA-based PDF forms on Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome
There are are probably registry entries available for setting this up in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER registry hive for both Mozilla Firefox and Google Chrome, but I don't know them and have not seen them posted on any vendor site.  Then again, I haven't looked either.

  • My Firefox Plug-in for Adobe Reader, says it's outdated. I have tried several times to download the latest version, and it still says it is outdated, can you help me?

'''bold text'''I have found out that I need to disable my Firewall, and stop my pop-up blocker, before downloading the new Adobe Reader. Now, I have uninstalled it and re-installed it several times, because on the Checl Plu-In Page, it still says it is outdated. I don't know what else to do.

    Bill,
Thanks for getting back to me.  I am very frustrated.  Initially I called to ask questions about what software version I needed and got my questions answered.  I received the messages with registration/sign in info and the link to download.  Then I got the screens shown on the attachment.  I did this several times on Friday and then called for assistance, which put me into the Forum area to leave my question.  This morning I have used your link and gone to the same place and got the same results.  I am beginning to wonder if this is what I want.  We need software that will let us edit pdf text and drawings files.  Can you confirm that I am trying to get the correct software and what I need to do to complete this download?
I don't believe it is a system problem because I have 215 GB of free space on my hard drive.

  • Adobe Reader won't install in any of the website-given ways. How can I fix this?

I've been trying to install Adobe Reader 11.0 on my Windows 8 computer for about an hour now. When I download the regular installer, the first thing my PC does is give a security warning. Strange already, but the website mentioned this could happen, so I said "download anyway". Then when I execute the installler file, I get a small error window titled "Host" which tells me "the certificate could not be verified". The only thing I can do is press "OK", which makes it go away, but the installer still does nothing, of course.
So I tried the other "direct" download which is given as a possible solution. The AdbeRdr11000 file I get from that downloads without any security issues.
When I execute it, it asks me if I give this installer permission to run. I say "yes", the window dissapears and then nothing happens. At all. I can wait all I want, it's like I never clicked anything to begin with.
So how can I fix this. I really feel like downloading such a widespread product shouldn't be so difficult.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When I follow your link, after filling out the information (operating system, language), I still can only choose for version 11,0.
This is the same version the "direct" download gives me (the one that doesn't do anything after executing).
