  • Deleting outdated programs

I just upgraded OS from Snow Leopard to Yosemite. Maxed out the ram.  So far it is all good! I feel I have a new machine. Microsoft Word 2004 won't run (no surprise!). Before installing updated Word I feel I need to delete the old on and maybe any other useless programs that are just taking up disc space. Is there a program for that? Can I make an appointment at a genius bar for that kind of service. Should I just ignore it, instal a new version of office and more on?
    Thank you, Andy

The ideal way when installing a new operating system is to partition the hard drive (this removes all outdated software) then re-install the operating system and install only those applications you require. If you don't want to do that; use the uninstaller that is supplied with the applications that have this e.g. Microsoft and use an application removal tool such as Appcleaner or Appzapper.

  • I have a MacBook White.  Everything worked great with Snow Leopard including Mathematica, and all Pogo games. I downloaded Lion two days ago and now neither program works.  The box states that I need J/Link, and/or java runtime.  Help.

I have a MacBook White, early 2009 model, just downloaded/installed OS X Lion.  Everything worked well with Snow Leopard - Mathematica, pogo.com games. Now, with Lion, I am getting a box that states I need J/Link, and/or java runtime.  Software update feature states all software is up to date.  Help.

What about the incredable lag time from clicking on a program to the time it opens (or the time till the loading screen starts)? I wish I could record it and play it so I could see if thats normal from other members... the icon just sitting there for over 35 second (I just counted 36 till the loading screen popped up) at first I thought it was me not clicking hard enought cuz the mouse button I have is real stiff (any ideas on that?) but no it takes that long just to get to the app loading screen... this happens every time same amount of time with the 3 programs I use the most, prolly more but I know for a fact world of warcraft, uTorrent, and Google Chrome. I would just chalk it up to slow hardware but they load real quick in windows 7 and once this bad spot is loaded the program runs so fast and nice afterword. Maybe some tweeks? I wonder if this would happen in Snow?
The coment "few outdated programs" Ive seen alot its not just a few its a lot and since games are not Apple's strong point I would think they would want to keep as many as they could...
An example of the rants you will see from a lot here. Don't be put off as these problems are generally user specific, and these same old comments come out after the release of every OSX I can remember. When Lion is upgraded  to the next OSX you can gaurentee these forums will be full of people screaming about how great Lion was. Happened with Tiger, Leopard and Snow Leopard.
So come to think of it you may be better off Googling sites that give you unbiased views on Lion, rather than expect any positive comments here. For every one complaint there are probably 100,000 people with no issues.
    Cheers

  • Dual boot windows mac mini

I got a Mac mini and in general I'm happy with it but found out that there's some software I use regularly that is just much better on Windows.  They barely support OS X although technically they do.  So I would like to dual boot Windows as it seems like this is supported and not crazy.
I followed the bootcamp and some guides I found via Google.  I have the mac mini 2014 with 8 gig ram and 1 terabyte of space.  I have dual monitors setup and a logitech mouse and a logitech gaming keyboard G110 - both USB.  (I also own a wireless apple keyboard which I occasionally use with my iPad).  My first problem was a DOS screen telling me I can't boot up on the specified disk but I did get some help off Google telling me to hold down option while booting (this should be in the guides ;p) but it was easy to fix.. however I'm stumped on what's happening now.
When I click the Windows partition, it starts booting up Windows 7 Premium 64 bit setup and all looks good.  Then a screen pops up asking me what language/region I am.  The default is United states (perfect).  On this screen my keyboard and mouse are useless.  Or it's frozen.  I think the former.  I think the computer just can't recognize them.  And I cannot figure out a way around this.  If anyone can - please help I will be very thankful.
I've tried booting up using the Windows 7 DVD I own and an ISO installed on a USB flash drive per the Bootcamp installer.  Results are the same.

Use Boot Camp!! Sounds like you have the install disc. Make sure you completely erase a USB 2.0 Thumb Drive format it as one MS DOS Master Boot Record partition. Download Drivers to it. I checked this box in boot camp only.
Having install disc and driver thumb drive ready. Insert Windows install disc and plug in Thumb drive.
Open Boot Camp uncheck first 2 boxes. Continue
Size the BOOTCAMP partion you want it to be by sliding the bar. Or split your HD is an option.
After that is complete. You will be asked where to install. Select BOOTCAMP partition
Click Drive Options (advanced).  Click Format. Click OK. All goes well you click Next and it will format as NTFS
Follow instructions to to install, set up and configure Windows.
GO TO APPLE  SUPPORT no where else. PRINT BOOT CAMP Installation & Setup Guide. It is in my binder with my Windows 7 Professional Disc. You'll need this, I'm afraid, to have on hand. When Windows is up and going, Antivirus 1st, Install Windows express updates only. Do not update Apple drivers for Windows. Running Windows 7 Pro on my Mac Mini since I bought it in August. Use it for those outdated programs I can't run on Mac or Windows 8. Love it.
GET THE MANUAL Please. Have fun with it.
Oh, try left clicking your USB Mouse to make it work. If not use keyboard strokes. i.e. I  a ccept the license agreement (note that the a is underlined. hit "a" on the keyboard to check box.

VirusBarrier needs to be uninstalled using the original installer. That installer will have a button that allows you to uninstall the software. If you no longer have the original installer, you will need to re-download it.
BitDefender must be removed using the uninstaller provided by the developer. That uninstaller is found on the .dmg file that also contained the original installer. If you no longer have that, you will need to re-download it.
Do not try to locate and remove these items manually! They must be removed using the uninstaller!
Note that it's a bad idea to have two anti-virus programs like these installed and active at the same time. That can easily cause all manner of problems, including serious performance problems. For more information about protecting yourself against malware, see my Mac Malware Guide.
You also have SpeedIt installed, which is a badly outdated program that has been discontinued. The developer is no longer in business. I would be surprised if it wasn't causing problems. Unfortunately, because it is so old and the developer's site is gone, I cannot find any uninstaller or uninstallation instructions. See if you have a SpeedIt uninstaller somewhere. If you still have the SpeedIt installer somewhere, that may include the uninstaller.
If removing those programs doesn't fix the problem, the only other third-party kernel extensions you have installed are:
    com.markspace.driver.Android.RNDIS    1.2
    com.roxio.BluRaySupport    1.1.6
You'll need to remove those using the uninstaller provided by the developers (markspace.com and roxio.com).

  • Bridge CC, unsuccessful manual installation for output module.

I have manually installed the Adobe Output Module for Bridge CC.  I followed EVERY STEP in the directions from http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/install-output-module-bridge-cc.html
After installation, I am receiving the "I/O error".  I have googled this error, and it appears that many are having this same issue, and no one has a solution to fix the problem.  I am currently taking an online graphics course, and this first assignment should only take 1 hour...I am now up to 8 hours of trying to troubleshoot this and figure this out...and I'm wasting my Labor Day.  I'm so frustrated and almost to the point of canceling my Creative Cloud membership AND my online class since I'm already running into problems with Assignment #1.  I do have the CS3 program, but I do not want to go through this class with such an outdated program.
Does Adobe know if they are working to fix this problem, or if it will ever be fixed?  If they are in the process of fixing it, do they know approximately how long it will take?  Can someone please offer a solution or shine some light on the topic.  I am working on a MacBook Pro laptop, Mac OS X version 10.6.8.
    Thank you!

No, I can not get older versions.  I would have to pay $999 for CS6
This is not true, you should be able to download CS6 for free with your CC subscription:
    From the FAQ of CC:
Do Creative Cloud members have access to previous versions of Creative Cloud apps?
Yes. Creative Cloud paid members have access to a select set of archived versions of the desktop apps. Starting with CS6, select versions of each of the desktop creative apps will be archived and available for download. Archived versions are provided "as is" and are not updated to work with the latest hardware and software platforms.
You just have to dig a bit deeper in the Creative Cloud download center.
    Try this link:
    https://creative.adobe.com/products/photoshop

I have a MacBook Pro laptop bought in 2010 using Snow Leopard 10.6.8. 4 GB of Memory and 2.66GHZintel core i7.  I have also partitioned the drive with VMware to use a windows application.  If I have backed up all personal photos documents, music, movies etc and I don't mind if I lose all the info in the partition VMware, is it ok to
update to Yosemite. Is there anything special I need to do, like uninstall the VMware first?  Also do I need more than 8GB on my hard drive?
Any one done anything similar and if so were there any issues?
    thanks for any help,
    musemhp

  • Officejet J6480 All-In-One Printer

I just bought a new Dell tower with Windows 8.1.  When I was installing the printer's software, it told me that I needed new software for a 64 bit computer, which I found online.  Everything seemd fine for the type of documents I first printed.  However, when I attempted to print a document created with Microsoft Works, I would get an error message telling me to clear a paper jam, even though the printer would kick out a blank sheet of paper.
I would always check to make sure there wasn't a jammed piece of paper, even though I knew there wasn't one.  Three times I unplugged both the power and USB cords, and still it would not print.  I finally created a new document from a blank letterhead page, then copied and pasted the content of the first document.  That new document printed.  However, this afternoon, when I attempted to print another Works document, I got the same paper jam message, even though it kicks out a full sheet of paper.  I tried my same fix, creating a new document, but this time, I got the error message.
This afternoon, I downloaded HP's Install Wizard and Print And Scan Doctor.  Both told me nothing was wrong.  I then uninstalled and reintalled the printer's software.  Again, I get the same paper jam error message, though the paper does not jam.
I am able to print documents created with Quatro pro though, with no problems.  Thinking the problem has to be with Works, yesterday, I uninstalled and reinstalled that program, which did no good.  A thought did occur to me right now, I use Works 9, an outdated program (I know, I'm probably the only one still using Works and Quatro pro).  Could this be the problem?

Hey there @GnirpsNevets , welcome back to the community
Yes, using Microsoft Works could very well be the issue.  You have tried all of the troubleshooting for the printer that I would have suggested to you in hopes to have it working for your however, it's discontinued and support on it seems scarce.
Check out this alternative from Paul_Tikkanen to see if that helps:

  • Is it still possible to buy Photoshop CS3 Extended?

I first learned Photoshop on this version as a student back in 2008 and after seeing newer versions I still prefer this older one. Does Adobe still sell CS3? There are copies on Amazon for ~ $2,000 which 1) is crazy for an outdated program and 2) I want to make sure I have a legitimate copy.

There's only one "post CS6" version - CC.
But as far as layouts go...

  • Mavericks Calendar Open File Alarm Scripting Failure

    Hi all,
I just recently upgraded to 10.9 from 10.8.5. Part of my daily routine is to download an excel file, gather information from that excel and, using applescript, add information from that document to an icloud calendar found in Apple Calendar, and create an alarm that opens an application after the specified event time.
The upgrade to Mavericks did two things, first it stripped away all of the "Open File Alarms" from existing events on the icloud calendar, and now when I attempt to create new events with the below applescript, I get an error  "There was an error saving calendar data. Calendar encountered a critical error while saving to the database, and recent changes may be lost. More information may be available in the console." If I strip away the code for adding the open file alarm, the events add properly. If I manually add an open file alarm by clicking the event and selecting the necessary info, the calendar and event save fine. I've checked the applescript dictionary for Calendar in 10.9 and I don't see a difference in how Open File Alarms are handled.  Can anyone offer any suggestions? Below is the snippet of code that grabs the data from excel and loads it into the event in Calendar.
    --opens data in excel
    tell application "Microsoft Excel"
      activate
set theDoc to "Mac HD:Automatic User:CSV File From Form:Re-Hire Form.csv" as text
      open file theDoc
--get the outdate programmed for iCal & expiration function
set eventFirstName to the value of range "B2" & " " as string
set eventLastName to value of range "C2" & " out" as string
set eventname to eventFirstName & eventLastName
set targetDate to the value of range "I2" of active sheet
      quit
    end tell
    --add outdate events to calendar
    tell application "Calendar"
if class of targetDate = date then
set newTargetDate to targetDate + (1 * days)
set outDate to short date string of newTargetDate
              end if
              set theoutdatecal to "Show_trans"
              tell calendar theoutdatecal
                        set deactivate_date to make new event with properties {start date:targetDate, summary:eventname, allday event:true, status:confirmed}
              end tell
              tell deactivate_date
                        make new open file alarm at end with properties {trigger interval:1440, filepath:"/Automatic User/Workflows/deactivation.app"}
              end tell
    end tell
    Thanks!

As a side note, I have also tried unlinking and relinking the icloud account (to clear the calendar data), and creating fresh calendars "On My Mac" to the same result.

  • How do you make an X cursor?

I googled a lot, and all I can find are sites that have guides to make big X cursors, or involves the use of strange/outdated programs. (Which doesn't help.) I tried ubuntu and gentoo wiki and neither of them were very helpful. I have made a set of animated cursors a long time ago, but I completely forgot how to, and I can't seem to find the guide I used.
Does anyone know how to make a cursor? Okay, I know Linux doesn't use "cursor files", but if I have a set of images I drew that I want to use as cursors, what would I do? Where does it go? What is the syntax for editing the configuration files? Lucky I don't want to make an animated cursor so it might be a little easier.
I'd prefer it if it doesn't require the use of strange programs. I remember I was able to do it all by the commandline when I did it.

Install them in a directory in /usr/share/icons and add in your ~/.Xdefaults :
    Xcursor.theme: redglass
    Xcursor.size: 16
Just replace redglass by the directory where you placed your cursors (redglass is one of the theme from  xcursor-themes).
That would work if I had cursors. I just have hand drawn pngs. How would I arrange them to be cursors. Obviously putting a few pictures in a folder wouldn't work.
I could try copying the syntax of the cursors already there. I'll do that when I get the chance to go on my other computer. This computer actually runs debian, but my other computer is my main, running Arch. I want my cursors on both of them. I don't think there is too much of a difference per distro, but debian doesn't have any cursors in /usr/share/icons for some reason.

  • Creating Enhanced CD

I'm interested in making an enhanced CD for a personal project. Ultimately I want it to look something like this:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQJrmBiCYlA
My knowledge of flash is fairly basic, but I'm somewhat comfortable working with the program and have already finished pieces to this project.
I've made a compilation video from recordings and music videos that I would like to use as the intro. I've imported it to Flash already and it plays in it's own scene, just confused on how to create buttons and link from scene to scene. I've also got the player/jukebox working properly.
I've been googling for tutorials for the last hour to no avail; so I decided to try my luck here. If anyone knows of any tutorials or would be kind enought to at least get me started that would be great.
    Thank you in advance!
    -Kevin

While you are right that your project is perfectly doable with Flash, you realize that there are tons of freeware porducts out there that specialize in that kind of requirement ?
Apart from being a not-so-useful exercise in learning an (outdated) programing language version: expect some trouble when you actually burn that CD and want to distribute it to your firends or add it to an online portfolio.
    Just saying.

  • Safari and Firefox stalling on certain sites

Certain internet sites like the New York Times and ESPN seem to make Safari and Firefox stall completely. Anyone have a solution for this?

Try using the Activity Window when visiting one or two of the problem sites. I found that one site was loading two flash files, each over 1 megabyte. Instead of loading the rest of the site, these files stalled the entire site, or Safari, until they were loaded. In the Error Console I'm seeing lots, more than two dozen on one site, of Javascript errors. Again, I think it's a combination of bad/outdated programming on some sites and something broken in Safari.
I think the issue boils down to sloppy programming on some sites and changes to the recent build of Safari. I don't know if the recent OS upgrade broke Javascript and I wish there were a way to reinstall it alone to see if that fixes part of the problem.
I also notice that with OS 10.5.6 and Firefox that same problem sites are also slower to load, but not nearly as slow as when using Safari. Logging in with Tiger and its version of Safari is definitely a better experience.
