Outer Glow issue in Illustrator CS4

I have a file with a very large logo. probably 4 feet wide by 2 feet tall. I am trying to put the Outer Glow on it so that the logo will show up nicely on a dark background. This however seems to lock up Illustrator, and or, cause the file to be huge. Any suggestions to get the 'glow' I am referring to without this happening?
Thanks.

Not to belabor this, but since you're planning to re-do it (was not my intention to convince you to do that):
Especially given the overall size, involving a single full-span background raster image, and the simple content, this is my typical practice for that kind of thing:
1. Build the background image in Photoshop, as I think you already have.
2. Set up the full-size AI document, with guides at the panel edges, any necessary bleeds, etc. (It's good to mark where the panel seams are, even if you are not going to build individual files for the separate panels. That often lets you tweak the position, for example, of text so that the seams occur between words.)
3. From Photoshop, save a low-res version of the background image (or just take a screenshot) to use "for position only" on a background layer in Illustrator.
4. In Illustrator, position the vector objects and text without raster effects. Also draw a temporary, small, filled, unstroked square aligned to two opposite corners of the whole layout's guides. (Assuming the EPS logo you mention is simple vector content, I would Open it, not place it as a link.)
5. Copy any objects created in step 4 which require a raster drop shadow, glow, etc. and the two small squares.
6. Switch to Photoshop. Paste. Select Rasterize in the resulting dialog. Proportionally scale to the corresponding guides in Photoshop. (The two tiny squares ensure proper position of all the other elements.) You can do the scaling and positioning while it's still selected; it doesn't actually get rasterized until you "nail it down."
7. Apply the drop-shadows, glow, etc. as a Layer Style. In the Layers Palette, split the effect(s) as separate layer(s). (There's a comand for that.) Delete the pasted content. That leaves the original background object and the raster effects.
8. Flatten the layers. Now you have one simple background raster image, with the shadows, etc., part of it. Delete any unnecessary alpha channels, etc. Save as TIF.
9. In Illustrator, delete the low-res FPO. Place the TIF in Illustrator. The vector objects and text are still in their intended positions and their shadows, glows, etc., are actually part of the background image.
10. Save the Illustrator document. Save a Copy... as print-ready PDF. Send the PDF to the vendor.
Some will argue that is rather old-school, and go on about so-called Smart Objects and "why don't you just apply the live effects in AI?" yadda, yadda, yadda. Well, it is somewhat old-school, but it is also rock-solid reliable. No automatically generated clipping mask, no automated slicing, no unpredictable stitching artifacts--no ugly surprises. Just a clean, efficient file that you won't lose sleep over. And the behavior of Illustrator doesn't slow to that of cold molasses.

  • Need help!  I have a plug-ins issue in illustrator CS4 after updating my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE

    Hi,
My Adobe CS 4 ran perfectly find up until I updated my MAC OS from Mavericks to the new YOSIMITE. When I launch illustrator CS4 I get a window message the reads   "some plug-ins in the additional Plug-ins folder are conflicting with application or user plug-ins. It will skip loading plug-ins from additional plug-ins folder."  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading process, then a second window will appear reading  "Error loading plug-ins.  PhotoshopImport.aip"  there is a OK button that I must click on to close the message window and then illustrator will continue loading and launch.
The problem is when I open a current file that has a psd link I will get a window message reading  "could not find a plug-in to read the link file _______ choose repair to locate the missing file, replace to select another file, or ignore to leave the link unchange."   When selecting a psd link /file it is greyed out which I cannot select it.  I can not select, choose, import or open any files/links that is a psd.
Would someone please help me resolve this issue please!!!

I have the same issue! Did you get a solution yet?

  • Sizing Issues with Illustrator CS4

When I drag the ellipse/rectangle tool in Illustrator CS4 on Windows XP, instead of just resizing the object when I drag, it creates multiple ellipses/rectangles until I have reached the size I want. How do I get this to stop so that there is only 1 object?

  • Sclaing issues in Illustrator CS4

When I try to scale items, text etc in proportion while holding down the shift key it doesn't work.
Is there some preference that needs ticking or other obvious solution to this (other than using the scale tool in the menu bar, which works fine)
    Thanks for any help

A: did you turn off your bounding box?  Command shift b will toggle it, or look in the view menu for show bounding box.
Otherwise, if the shift key isn't working right, that's usually caused by another program getting in the way of the keystroke.  Usual suspects include entourage, quicken and VPN programs.  Install anything lately?

  • Printing to PDF from Illustrator CS4

    Hi,
I have been having serious issues with Illustrator  CS4, working on my files and then at the end going to print to PDF and the message reads; "can't print the illustration" ... It is happening even if I have a blank document containing nothing. Could someone please shed some light on this, as I am working on such large files and the 'save to pdf' is not really a great option as it barely reduces the file size.
    Thanks!

If you don't tell us about your system and your fonts and all that stuff and what you are doing then there is no way of seeing what is going wrong being as vague as is humanly possible is not helpful.
Tell us about the OS your application fonts, telling us what is important and not important is not a good idea if you do not understand what is going on.
For instance Mylenium's posting suggestion it is not necessary to save to print to pdf because Illustrator is native to pdf. It means you can open an Illustrator file in Acrobat no need to even save it as a pdf unless someone requests it. Or if you turn off the pdf compatibility option.
So if you tell us what information you like and don't like or what information you want us to know and not know we can't help.
By the way even if the you do not use fonts in a document there still may be a problem with the fonts and font cache, even if that does not make sense to you.

  • Illustrator CS4 can´t sometimes use some fonts

Hello I have a strange issue with illustrator CS4 under Adobe Creative Suite CS4 Design Premium, which is driving me really crazy. If I am trying to write some text using for example Titilium Font, Olijo or some other ttf and otf fonts, I can see them in font selection, but whe I change to them Illustrator automaticaly switch to Myriad Pro. Few minutes ago I have sucesfully written a text with Olijo font then I restarted computer and Illustrator refused to use the font next time. I do not know what is causing it because other programs Word, Excel, Photoshop, InDesign, Flash can use them font without any problems. This issue is happening randomly with random fonts only in Illustrator. It also happened once with Myriad Pro font Family. Anyone knows how can I solve this?
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 and my custom fonts (bought and downloaded) are in the folder C:\Fonts, system fonts are in the folder C:\Windows\Fonts. For font managing I am using Bitstream Font Navigator.

  • Illustrator CS4 big files

    Hello,
I've encountered issues with illustrator cs4 when creating banners or posters of 1mx2m, especially when exporting to jpg it says not enough memory.
There are a number of problems with blurs even on small file sizes such as A4 documents.
I never had these problems with CS3.
    System specs
    Mac Pro Eight-Core 2.8
    Snow Leopard
    12gig of Ram
    360gb main drive
    1Tb secondary drive
Now I don't think its my system and another thing I've noticed when using activity monitor to see how much of the system is used, it's virtually nothing, very low, 0.8%, etc, thats the cpu, physical memory is hardly none, vm isn't much either with many other apps open, it hardly uses any of my system, so where is Illustrator taking it's power from, as its not using much from my system?
    Thanks

Check effects >> document raster effects. For some large scael graphics(eg: tradeshow) you don't need 300 dpi.

  • Outer Glow not appearing in Illustrator CS5.1

I am working in a file in Illustrator CS5.1 and when I try to add an Outer Glow effect to text or an object, it does not show up.  As I'm applying it with the preview option selected, or even after I apply it.
I also can't seem to get the blur option to work on drop shadows.  All drop shadows appear with a hard edge.
The odd part is that when I open a CS4 version of the file, I can see the outer glow on the text and objects, but once I manipulate that file, it dissappears.
Is this some setting I am missing in Illustrator that was previously set default in older program versions????

5 in what units. Inches then it is too high and that is why you see nothing it is overblurred.
Can you post a screen shot, use the caemra icon (3 left of the smily face). tyr putting in these amounts.

  • Illustrator CS4 "out of memory" exporting to PSD

illustrator CS4 "out of memory" exporting to PSD.
settings to write layers at 300 dpi.
worked fine a week ago, suddenly no memory?
even tried with a 3 inch square and it would not export to Photoshop.
Works fine in CS6, but I don't always have access to CS6.

Impossible to tell without actualyl knowing what your settings are. I stil lthink that this issue could be related to your color management or you inadvertently attaching soemthing odd to your graphics because you may have accidentally defined something as the default appearance and it now messes up the simplest object you draw... Perhaps you can provide soem screenshots....

  • Illustrator CS4, new Pantone color books, color channel issue

Since I installed the new Pantone color books, I've been running in a major issue which will affect our whole production line.
If an Illustrator CS4 file contains a Photoshop CS4 image which is using an "old" Pantone color in a color channel, it cannot be opened and I get an error message "File is unreadable". If I replace the "old" Pantone colour with its new equivalent in the color channel in Photoshop, the file can be opened normally.
In our work environment, this means going through all our images to check which one is using a color channel. A painful and time wasting procedure. Furthermore, if one of our suppliers doesn't have the new color books, they won't be able to open any of the files, both Photoshop and Illustrator, so they have no way to revert back to the old Pantone.
Is there another way to fix this?
    Thank you

More on the Pantone PLUS saga, hoping to get some input from the users of this forum. I find their silence deafening, to say the least. This is a serious issue, that will cost our agency hours and hours of work if it isn't addressed. And we've already wasted hours of troubleshooting and discussions on how we could resolve it.
We're actually testing a workaround: using both the old and the new libraries in Illustrator. After consulting our suppliers, we've learned that this is what they also do. For them, it's a one shot to get the file to print. For us, it means cheating with files that will get edited again in the future. And the Pantone installer removes the old Pantone books from the Adobe folders for a reason which is mentioned on the download page:
The reason that the PANTONE Color Libraries that had been built into Illustrator need to be removed and replaced with the PANTONE PLUS Color Libraries is that, in Illustrator, a PANTONE Color can only have one data point with which it is associated. In the short term, in order to benefit from the new colors and data associated in PLUS, the PANTONE Libraries that are installed with Adobe Illustrator are removed and replaced with the new PLUS Libraries.
    http://www.pantone.com/pages/Pantone/Pantone.aspx?pg=20721&ca=1
I worry this may lead to another bunch of issue, knowing how easily AI files get corrupted. What I need to know is:
What is the exact meaning of the Pantone warning about the "one data point per color?
What are the long term implications of using both Pantone libraries in an Adobe file? Or in the Adobe app?

  • Illustrator CS4 in Snow Leopard Issues

I have a logo file that I created in Illustrator CS4 on an iMac running Snow Leopard and it does not display some of the text layers when saving for the web or saving as an Illustrator CS3 file or copying and pasting into Photoshop CS4. Basically the text layers are just standard text using Adobe Garamond Pro (Italic and Regular) fonts and white text on a black background. In the original file both text lines look fine but when I try to save using one of the other methods above I no longer see the 2nd text line. So, in effect I can't create the JPEG or GIF that I need from this logo. Anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks
    Steve

Maybe not a cs4/snow leopard issue but an overprinting issue?
Is the white text that goes away set to overprint?

  • Photoshop CS4-Outer glow changes specs (spread, size etc) when dragged into another ps file of similar size

Hello. I'm trying to add an outer glow to multiple photoshop images that have (at least one) of the same file dimensions as the original photoshop file. I'm doing this by dragging/dropping the original file's outer glow into the new files. But the size/spread/etc. of the outer glow changes once in the new file. Trying to automate this process and have to redesign the drop shadow for every batch of images I get. Anyone have any advice on why this is occurring? Or any advice on how to automate if this method does not work? I'm trying to keep the look of the outer glow consistent with every new batch. Thanks for looking! Yea, I know, still working in CS4 unfortunately.

    Try resetting the printer subsystem.

  • Issues with eyedropper in illustrator CS4

I've just moved onto Illustrator CS4,a nd ahve discovered several glitches with the eyedropper tool, in that you will try to sample a fill and stroke from another object, and it will show in the stroke and fill boxes that it has taken on this appearance, but the object itself doesn't change. Or sometimes it will take on the stroke, but not the fill. the only way i've gotten around this is to use the pathfinder tool to divide the object by itself, and then the eyedropper seems to work. major pain though.
does anyone know if there is any way to stop this happening?
    thanks

Check your graphics driver configuration and install a new one/ different one. Also check your color profiles, should you be using any. Since sampling is done at the preview level, there may simply be an issue here where it sometimes cannot correctly "see" what's beneath. Also of course look for invisible layers or visible layers with seemingly nothing on them. Some of them may have appearances applied that would "block" everything. Sometimes a drop shadow on a stray line or point can have the weirdest effects... Other than that I'm not aware of standing issues with this, but anything is possible.

  • Solved my Illustrator CS4 (Can not save file) issue (same as with Illustrator CS3)

Using Illustrator CS4, if the OS default printer is turned off, Illustrator will crash when saving the file to a name/format other than what it was opened as. I tested this and it's true, the bug exists in Illustrator CS4 (and was referenced in a ticket in this knowledge base on the CS3 product).
You'd think ADOBE would figure out how to DOCUMENT this feature!!
Set your default printer to ADOBE.PDF and all will be fine!

You do have to have a default printer how you were able to run Illustrator is a mystery unless they change this behavior in CS 3 which I was not aware of but perhaps it is something I forgot.
But I for one am glad you discovered the cause and cure and that you posted it, I don't have the problem but thank you.

  • Is there a patch for Adobe Illustrator CS4 for the issue described in APSB10-29 for CS5?

APSB10-29 acknowledges a problem that affects CS5 and ALL earlier versions, however only makes available a patch for CS5. We tried using the patch on our CS4 installation, but it says it isn't applicable to our installation. Is there an applicable fix for earlier versions such as ours?

We use the Nessus vulnerability scanner to check for potential OS and applications security issues, and it's picking up on this vulnerability in our Illustrator CS4 installattion, and it's suggesting we apply the 15.0.2 update, which we can't. So is this likely just a false positive? Do we know for a fact that this issue is strictly a CS5 issue? If that's the case I'll just note it as such and move on. Thanks.
