Outgoing Email Won't Send

Problem: I can't send email from Mail.app via SMTP. When sending the program attempts to make the connection, but the message comes back with an error at the top: "Cannot send message using the server smtp.east.cox.net". (That's the correct name of the server I'm attempting to use.)
The same settings work fine for Entourage, and mail downloads without issue in Mail.app. Server authentication is only username/password, though I've tried various combinations of SSL, waiting to be prompted for the PW, etc, with no success. The problem persists across port settings as well. (I even tried plugging the IP address in directly; no joy.)
Version 2.0.7 of Mail and 10.4.6 of OS X, though the exact same symptoms manifested themselves in Mail 2.0.5 and OS X 10.4.5.
I'm fresh out of ideas. Anyone have any suggestions, hints, tips, or tricks?

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
Based upon the info at the link below, it would appear your setting for the Outgoing Server authentication should be None, and no password. Mail attempts a "hard" authentication when Password is select, but since Cox authenticates the SMTP based either upon the Incoming Server or upon the IP address of the modem, the additional, separate authentication attempt on the Outgoing results in failure. Entourage can treat this differently, and has a special setting (I think) if the "hard" attempt is required. See:

  • Outgoing email won't send after iOS5 update.

After I updated for iOS5, neither my Mac, iPhone4 or iPad2 will send email. The outgoing server setting is correct but I get a "connection to outgoing server failed" notice each time I try to send an email. Seems like an Apple issue. Any suggestions.

I've had emails get "stuck" in my outbox on the phone - try restarting the phone and see if that jogs it into sending.  If that doesn't work, delete the account from your phone and recreate it.

  • TS3276 how does one select a folder for an outgoing email, prior to sending out that email?

I would like to know what I need to do to select a folder for my outgoing emails before I send them. In other words, if I am sending a message to someone, Outlook has the option to select the folder where you would like to save the outgoing email to. That way, you are able to document all of your important outgoing emails. I was wondering if Apple mail had the same option. I know you can set rules up, the challenge is that the rules do not always apply depending on the email messages.
    Thank you for your assistance.

Send Apple feedback. They won't answer, but at least will know there is a problem. If enough people send feedback, it may get the problem solved sooner.

  • Emails won't send from Hotmail account on iphone as message says password is incorrect

I recently had a problem with my hotmail account which meant it was blocked and I had to go through a securitiy process to unblock my account and change my password. I can now use my hotmail account again and changed the password on my phone settings to be able to use this account on my phone again. However, when I try to send emails from my iphone from my hotmail account, it says my password is incorrect and the emails won't send. I am also not convinced that I am receiving all emails, although some came through when I initially re-added the account. I have tried to delete the account and add it again, as well as restart my iphone, but I am still having the same problem. The password I have for the account is correct! I would be so grateful if anyone could help.
    Thanks.

For anyone else having this problem I have found a solution! You need to change the outgoing server settings as well as the incoming server password which appears on the main settings page. Go into the account in settings and select the box under outgoing mail server. Click on the box under primary server. This will take you to the settings, including the password which you can change.

My email won't send as when it was set up an extra letter was accidentally inserted in the address. I need to know how to remove the entire email address and start a fresh.

Launch Mail.app, select Mail > Preferences... > Accounts and select the account you need to edit in the left column.
The receiving information will be displayed for the selected Account, with a pop-up selector for the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) toward the bottom.  That selector shows which mail server will be used with this account; to send mail.
Click and hold on that selector, and scroll down (holding the mouse or trackpad clicked) to Edit Mail Server List... and you'll get a sheet dropping down with the mail servers listed.
Select the problematic mail server, and edit it using the Account Information and Advanced items on that sheet.

  • Emails won't send from any account

    Hi all,
Had a problem for an unknown period of time now where emails won't send from Mail on the iPad. I had a couple of people ask me why I hadn't responded and after saying I had, they told me they hadn't received anything. I checked my sent box and the emails hadn't been sent.
I thought it was just with iCloud.
I have just tested it with another iCloud account and also my Gmail account and none of them will send an email. All work perfectly on my iMac - and Gmail works perfectly on my phone.
The strange thing is that I get the sent noise as soon as I hit sent, which is why there's been confusion. It doesn't sit in drafts or fail to send. There's no error. As far as you can tell it does sent - but it's never in the sent items/outbox and never received the other end.
Any ideas? Such a frustrating problem that I've never, ever had before.
    Thanks for any help,
    Ste.

Oddly, the test email sent from my Gmail account on my iPad has just appeared (after a five minute or so delay).
The email however, is still not inside the sent folder - there's still no record of it having been sent.
Problem persists in full for iCloud - nothing sending from iPad and being received by the recipient.

  • ICloud email won't send (it tries to send and then freezes, send button grayed out)

I can recieve email just fine. I can draft an email just fine. But it won't send.  When I hit the send button, the email window goes away and a message box appears and disappears so fast I can't read it.  The email window reapears with the "send" button grayed out.  Once this happens, I can't close the email window.  I have to quit mail.  When I open mail back up, the email will still be there and I can close it.  The send button is no longer grayed out, but if I hit send, the same thing happens (i.e., screen flashes and the send button is grayed out).
I've tried deleting the acouunt and reforming it.  Didn't help.  I checked to see that my outgoing server is "iCloud" and that it send on port 993 and the SSL check box is checked.
    Any ideas?

I'm having the exact same problem on one of my Macs but no the other.
Did you ever get this resolved?

  • IOS 7.1 emails won't send

I use IMAP and have tried all the fixes so far;  deleted accounts and reentered etc.
When I enter my password in the outgoing server (optional) - it won't stay entered....it disappears each time I save the info.....and mail still won't send.
I can't get the password to stay in the field - or there is really another issue!
HELP!!  I run business that requires I be able to send emails on the fly and I can't!

    Rudegar
I probably phrased my question wrong.....I just meant I use imap verses pop.
When I go into SMTP settings, it has "optional" password, which is supposed to solve the issue
with not being able to send emails, but no matter how many times I enter it and save the settings, it's gone when I go back in (because the emails still won't send).
    And other ideas?

  • @me emails won't send

Just like the thread title states.
I'm using my @me email address on my iPhone 4 with iOS 7.1.2, Outlook 2013 on a windows PC and in Mail on a Mac with Mavericks 10.9.3. All three of these won't send emails. They will receive fine, but sending is impossible unless I type my message on the iCloud webmail app. My focus is on Outlook for the moment, since that's what is on my main PC and also what I use for my academic Exchange account. Originally I let Outlook find the server settings, then tried to enter them manually, with no luck, and finally have resorted to using the iCloud control panel, which has also been fruitless. This has been the case for well over two years, and since I just used the webmail app, was never of much concern to me. However I'd like to get it fixed if possible.
If anyone has any suggestions as to what may be the problem they'd be greatly welcomed.

Enter the account manually. use these settings
SMTP information for the outgoing mail server
    Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
If you receive errors when using SSL, try using TLS or STARTTLS instead.
    Port: 587
    SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
Username: Your full iCloud email address (for example, [email protected], not emilyparker)
    Password: Your iCloud password
IMAP information for the incoming mail server
    Server name: imap.mail.me.com
    SSL Required: Yes
If you receive errors when using SSL, try using TLS instead.
    Port: 993
Username: The name part of your iCloud email address (for example, emilyparker, not [email protected])
    Password: Your iCloud password
Note that the logon for the IMAP server is different than it is for the SMTP server

  • Sent emails won't send!

Does anyone know if there is an issue in having too many emails overall (including sizable attachments) in the mail app, even though they are not in my Inboxes or other folders within Mail? For example, I periodically take out maybe 6 months of emails at a time from my InBox and Sent boxes, and put them in storage folders within the Mail program (in the "ON MY MAC" folders). Is there a size issue in the Mail app that would affect my outgoing mail, even though the emails are in a separate folder (but still in the Mail app)?
    Thanks for your help.
    Michael

    yes
Some mail servers have a size limit per folder. So lets say your size limit was 2GB per folder, and your sent items was full. When you go to send an email, it might send the message OK, but the email will stay in the outbox, because it cannot be moved to the sent items folder because of the 2gb limit.
You should check with your mail admin and ask what the limits are.
    Hope this helps

  • Google domain email won't send mail though apple mail

I just setup a new goole domain email address and have been fully varified with my domain. I set up the account on my imac & macbook pro, both running off Mavericks. I can receive email but not send and I keep getting asked for my email password. It's been entered in correctly. The mail just sits in the outgoing mailbox. The strange thing is that the same email account send emails perfectly from my iPhone. I have searched the issue and it seems to be a common issue with Mavericks however I haven't been able to find one solution that works. Can someone please office some advice? Feeling very frustrated right now! Thanks

I just fired up a new macbook air and had the same issue - set up my google domains email account and received emails but could not send. Strange as we have many Apple devices and they all work fine. Here is how I sorted it.
In summary the username used in the STMP server list (which was automatically populated with data on set up) was incorrect. It needs to be set to your full email address - mine just showed my name and no @domainname.com . See below if you need  step by step instructions on how to change it.
Open mail and in the main menu bar at the top of the screen click on mail then preferences. Click on accounts in the menu at the top of the panel that opens and then select the offending account in the list on the left.
In the section labelled Outgoing Mail Server there is a menu which is usually defaulted to gmail - click and open this and then select Edit STMP Server List.
In the new page that opens about half way down you can select advanced. When you click on this there is a panel near the bottom marked username. This was the problem. It had automatically set itself to the first part of my email address without the @nameofdomain.com. When I reset this to read my full address all worked fine.
I hope this sorts your problem as I know what a total pain in the *ss this can be!
