Outgoing emails away from home

When away from home (ISP TalkTalk) I find I can receive emails fine, but I cannot send emails on Mac Mail. This happened with my last ISP as well. Is there anyway of correcting this whilst still using Mac Mail? I have tried using different outgoing servers, but there seems to be something missing.

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
This issue is totally dependent upon the internet provider at the venues you visit while away from home, and also upon whether your ISP provides a SMTP that is fully authenticated and works on a Port other than Port 25. The latter is being increasingly blocked by most providers, and SMTP that trust you at your home venue only by reference to your authentication of the Incoming Server or the IP address of the Modem provided by your ISP are likely to not work when away. This is not related to Mail per se, but any email client.
Ask your ISP is they have a SMTP that works on Port 587 or Port 465 for you to use when away from home.

i don't know how to access my email away from home.
can't find webmail or email options.

Somehow I got it to work, a whole lot easier than i thought, kind of scary how easy... but Im not exactly sure what of several things is how I got it. Scariest thing; watching my iBook I wouldn't know that I was accessing it from the MB. It's only me doing it, but still seems so easy.
If I have a WPA2 password protected wireless network do I have to worry that others can access it so easily? (not that I have anything interesting, it's just the general privacy paranoia)

  • Getting email away from home

How do I get my .mac email away from home on my son's pc-based laptop? Thx.

Go to http:mail.mac.com/yourusername and log in with your .Mac password.
From here you should be able to read your mails.
Next time you're back home and login with Mail, your read messages will still download (unless you've deleted them of course)

  • Sending email away from home

I use a iBook G4 that I have set up wireless Airport in my home. I am able to send and receive emails at home. I have DSL provided by Cavalier and use Safari email program.
I am able to pick up WiFi signals in my travels as a sales rep. and can receive emails. The problem is I can't send emails. I checked with my Internet provider and they tell me to go their web site to send emails. That works for regular emails, but I work with a Filemaker software to generate sales orders that I email to vendors. I am not able to send these emails when I pick up a WiFi signal away from home.
    Any suggestions.

Safari isn't an e-mail program, it's a Web browser. When you use Cavalier's Webmail, you do so with a browser (such as Safari).
The Filemaker generated e-mail is probably using an e-mail client, such as Mail, to send the message. When you're sending from a 'foreign', not-Cavalier network (which is what happens when you hitch on someone else's WiFi signal, unless they happen to be a Cavalier customer), The Cavalier SMTP server won't send the e-mail. Many ISPs have adopted this tactic as a way of slowing down the spam avalanche. In some cases, they have established mechanisms to require authentication and use ports other than the popular port 25. It sounds like Cavalier has decided to lock things down a little tighter and requires you to use their Webmail when you're out of network.
One thing you can do is to let Filemaker generate the e-mail, then copy and paste it into Cavalier's Webmail to send it.
Hopefully others will have some suggestions.
    Good luck

  • IPad wont send emails away from home wifi

My iPad sends and receives emails when I'm using my home wifi - but will only receive and not send emails when I am away and using other wifi. Sent messages sit in the outbox until I get home - then they go. Any thoughts?

Try changing the SMTP port from 25 to 587.  This should work when connected to both BT network and 3 network.

  • Accessing email away from home

I just switched to Verizon Fios on Friday and I am trying to access my email from my work computer.  I can see my Inbox, but when I click on the message to read it, all I get is a blank screen.  I assume that I need to try to change some settings on my work PC, but have no idea where to start. Any suggestions?

Actually their email is pretty good  and reliable (past 48 hours excepted) ... it's the web front-end that is a bit dodgy.  While I hesitate to suggest it because I personally am not a fan of the "portal" experiences offer by Yahoo! or AOL -- Verizon does allow you to "switch" experiences (under your My Account settings) to one of these two portals instead (once you do so, your email is handled thru that portal and you can't come back to the Verizon "experience").   The experience interface is no cost and you retain your verizon.net email address -- it's just that you retrieve and send your mail thru the web interface provided by Yahoo! or AOL instead.   You might want to investigate that avenue.   I do know that different areas of the country appear to have different experiences.
Optionally, the big web-based mail providers (Gmail and Hotmail/Live among them) also have the ability to configure their accounts to poll and pull in mail from your Verizon mailbox via a POP connection.   So mail sent to your Verizon address is automatically retrieved by their webmail interface and shown to you.   I know that Gmail will even let you create a "send as" capability so that you can send mail as your verizon.net account without needing to expose your Gmail account name.   Another option.   (I have my own domain, so I use GoogleApps standard -- which is free for personal use -- and do exactly this pulling in my verizon.net mail to my Gmail based web interface).

  • Using Email on iPhone Away from Home

If anyone can help with this I would be grateful. I am having issues sending and receiving emails (with a comcast email account) from my iPhone when I'm away from home. At home it works fine -- I'm guessing because it's accessing comcast's mail servers via my Airport WiFi system. However, when away from home and when the iPhone has to send/receive via ATT's Edge network, I get "unable to connect to server" messages.
Any suggestions on how I might fix this, or is this an ATT issue?

You should be able to receive mail fine, whether you're on WiFi or Edge...
for your outgoing server try adding :587 to the end of the server address.
Put your username and password in.
Go to advanced and make sure SSL is turned off, and authentication is set to "password".
That worked for me with my provider, and I had used the suggestion based one what someone using comcast had said!

  • Using Outlook 2007 I want to receive emails on my iPhone 4 only when Outlook is NOT open on my computer, as when away from home or want to quickly check email when computer is not turned on. Either ALL emails come to my iPhone or none at all.

Using Outlook 2007 I want to receive emails on my iPhone 4 only when Outlook is NOT open on my computer, as when away from home or want to quickly check email when computer is not turned on. Either ALL emails come to my iPhone or none at all. Is the setting I need to change in Outlook or on the iPhone or is it somewhere else?  I used to have this setting but transferring Outlook to a new laptop somehow turned it off.

No. You really can't do that. Not easily at any rate. You would have to set them both up to use POP3, but even then there is no way to guarantee that the phone won't poll the server prior to your computer doing so, pulling down the message from the server.

  • How do I get my emails when I am away from home .

When I use another computer when away from home how do I access my emails.

Use your email providers webmail page. Go there using an Internet browser and log into your email account.
Thunderbird has nothing to do with this.

  • Why can't I get my email messages when i'm away from home?

My Blackberry gets emails when i'm at home via our wireless network, but when I'm away from home, I don't get any email messages or text messages at all.  We have both the home WiFi wireless network "on" and the Mobile Network is on.  What should I do so I can get emails when I'm away from home?

Without a Blackberry Data Plan you can't get email pushed to your Curve.  While on your wi-fi network you are able to access your email, but away from that link you need a data plan.

  • Is there any final answer to why emails will not send when away from home IP?  Have san diego road runner.  emails send fine from home, but do not send when using another IP.

Is there a final answer to why emails do not send from iphones when away from home IP?

This is a common anti-spam technique for ISPs to prevent mail from being sent from anywhere other than your service location. Ask Road Runner if there are any specific settings you can use to circumvent this.

  • I suddenly can't get email or internet access on my I-phone 4G when I'm away from home. how can I fix this?

Yesterday, I suddenly lost the ability to access email and Internet on my I-phone when I'm away from home (where we have Wifi).   Is there a simple way to fix this?  I have gone into Settings and can't figure out what to do.

if you're away from how do you access data? through your network? check if you turned off your data. Go to SETTINGS>GENERAL>NETWORK
turn on Cellular Data if it's OFF
3G should also be ON for faster access.

  • Smtp-server unavailable away from home

    Hi,
My POP email works fine when I am home - I get mail and send mail with no problem. When I am away from home, even at work, I cannot send mail - it sits in the outbox and I get various messages that it can't contact server or server rejected messages, etc. This happens whether I'm on Edge or another Wifi server.
I was on vacation and sent several emails. They all sat in the outbox for several days and when I got home and connected with my wifi router, they all were sent without me doing anything.
    Very weird.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this?
    Thanks!

There are two ways (at least) to get reliable SMTP service when you are not directly connected to you internet provider. One of them is free and one costs $24 per year.
The free service is Google Mail. When you sign up for a GMail account, you get access to their SMTP server for your other POP accounts. Look in the NY Times Technology section for an article by David Pogue on how to do this.
The $24/yr service is www.authsmtp.com. It will send you outgoing e-mail, authenticate it, and it will appear to have been sent from your regular address, so that spam filters on the receiving end don't block your mail. Directions on setting this up are at the Authsmtp site. It covers your iPhone, your laptops, and several e-mail addresses.
There is also a (less desirable) option. You can use AT&T (or Cingular's) outgoing SMTP server, but it is EDGE only. If you are connected to WIFI it will still use edge. The first two options above can use either WIFI or EDGE.

  • Sending pop and other mail away from home...

WHen i am away from my home it seems like i can only send email through MAIL with my .mac account. it never goes through with my optonline accounts or my gmail or AOL which are all connected through mail. i can get incoming mail anywhere but can only send .mac mail from anywhere.
is there a reason for that.?

Yes -- when you are away from home, and connected, you are subject to the restrictions and policies of the ISP of that venue, and they are, as is common, blocking the use of other SMTP. Usually such locations permit you to use an Authenticated SMTP, however, which smtp.mac.com is one. With the Authenticated SMTP, the local ISP will relay because this Authentication tells them you are a known and approved sender for the provider of the SMTP.
We need to check some things in Mail Preferences for the selection of each account's Outgoing Server, after clicking on Server Settings below the name of the SMTP seen at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Account Information for each account you have. Please review them, and report the Port number assigned to each.
The smtp.mac.com, for example, can only be used when sending from the .mac address.
Since, as best I remember from other topics, the optonline SMTP is not separately Authenticated, then you will likely never be able to send with it when at other venues. When not separately authenticated (something that may be a required setting) the name of the optonline SMTP will NOT have your username appended. Those SMTP that are authenticated by Password WILL have your Username appended to the full name listed.
    More info, please.
