Outgoing mail intermittent (new in 10.5)

For some months I have been having intermittent problems with outgoing mail on my private smtp server (the university server via VPN is fine). I get the usual 'cannot send mail using....' message, either immediately or after 20secs or so. I had originally supposed an intermittent problem at my ISP, since the issue seemed to come and go randomly, but in fact I now find that the issue ALWAYS goes away if I quit Mail and re-start (Mail, not the machine). Queued messages then go out normally. The fast fix has always been to set up the VPN and use the university server (which works fine for the same messages), but this is a bit irritating.
I cannot see this exact problem in the discussions, though others have outgoing mail problems newly in 10.5.
I have used Mail on the same servers for many years without this problem. FTR incoming mail is POP and from two different servers (and seems fine).
I note that the message is the same as that from the very annoying Mail behaviour whereby one cannot control the outgoing server directly, but have to wait for a 'fail' message and then re-select the correct server from a pop-up. Yes I have begged Apple for a fix for this silly process allowing me to directly (or via location switch) control the outgoing server instead of having Mail pointlessly attempt to contact a known-to-be-unavailable remote server! However, Mail has always done this and this new effect seems different.
All suggestions welcome! (I have tried deleting & re-creating the accounts and server entries).

I am having this same problem. That being Mail fails to pick the correct outgoing server when I am in different locations, using a different ISP. Mail goes through a long attempt to send, then gives you the message that it cannot send on server xxx, and gives you the choice to choose the one that is required from your present location. It is very annoying and time wasting! I have no problem when I am at work. If I go to my apartment where I have a different ISP (because it is my only choice), I cannot send an email without going through this hassle. When I go to my home where I have another different ISP, I have the same problem. If I am in a hotel, same problem. The problem goes away after Mail fails to send and I pick the correct outgoing server (sometimes it fails twice). However, if I quit mail and then go back to send email again, I have to go through this inconvenience again. We need the ability to choose the correct outgoing server to match the location and ISP that we are using at the time. Surely it can't be that hard to fix this.

  • What is causing very slow outgoing mail on new iphone 5?

Hi, I just got the new iphone 5 and set up mail with the auto options that the iphone gives me. It's for Gmail and yahoo. I can receive just fine on both, but both have issues sending. It will take 5-10 mins to send an email. I've done everything I've read that is supposed to fix it... delete accounts, set up again, shut down phone, restart, etc, etc. I've scoured the interwebs and can't find a solution.
If I set up gmail through the microsoft exchange, it works, but why won't it work through the pre-set up gmail account? Any ideas? Is it something to do with the SMTP?  HELP!
    Thanks...

Another way to continue using assistive touch and reducing the lag completely is to go to Settings>General>Assistance>Increase contrast>On
This solved it for me but I am hoping its just a part time fix as I enjoy the translucent visuals. Increase contrast basically takes away the layering found across the OS. My lock button is broken so I am forced to use assistive touch and this is really the only thing I can do rightnow. Try it out it should work well for you if you're willing to make a small sacrifice.
However, Apple should adress this issue as the iPhone 5 should be able to handle this kind of load from the OS without any issues especially considering that the 5C, which comes preloaded with iOS7 has the same internal hardware.
Hope this helps you, for the time being until Apple, hopefully, fixes this issue.

  • What is my outgoing mail server for setting up a new account in Mail?

Hi, I'm trying to set up a new account in Mail so that I check my school e-mail from that application and I've figured out what my incoming mail server is, but what where would I find the outgoing mail server if I want to send through Mail?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Ask the company providing you internet juice to get online. If it is Comcast, it typically is smtp.comcast.net or mail.comcast.net. If it is Verizon, it is outgoing.verizon.net. If it is someone else it is some SMTP server that is assigned by the company that you pay your bills to get online with.

  • What is incoming and outgoing mail server on adding a new emial account???

What is incoming and outgoing mail server on adding a new emial account???

The servers your email provider uses to route incoming and outgoing messages to and from email accounts.  If you are trying to set up and email account on your phone you need to get the required information for these settings from your email provider.

  • Trying to add my thunderbird work email account to my new iphone, how do I find my "incoming mail server" and "outgoing mail server" host names?

Got a new Iphone 6 and I need to add my work thunderbird email account onto the phone. It is asking me for the host name of my incoming and outgoing mail server and I have no idea what this means- please help!

First off there is no such thing as a Thunderbird email account. Email providers issue email accounts and Thunderbird is email client software and not a provider.
You can look at the server settings in Thunderbird to see the settings it is using or you could get a list from your provider.
In Thunderbird go to the menu bar and select Tools-Account Settings-Server Settings to see the Inbound settings and Tools-Server Settings-Outbging Server(SMTP) for Outbound settings.
No menu bar with Tools showing? Press the alt key.

  • I have just set up a new email host. The settings seem simple until i get to outgoing mail port. I don't find a place for that. Advice on Apple support says to click to continue, but there is no click to click. Any help?

In mail settings, how do I find the window or box to insert the outgoing mail port designation?

I am on 10.7, so Mail interface may look a bit different, but here a couple of screenshots - on the (Preferences) accounts page, look at the bottom for outgoing mail server and then choose Edit:
    In the resulting window:
enter the information needed; also click on Advanced and enter any info/port numbers given to you (unless it does it automatically).

  • Mail Intermittent Outgoing Mail Server

I have had issues with mac mail and my imap email account since upgrading to maverick's. My incoming mail is fine, but randomly when sending an emailI get this message:
The server “avery.zephyrstudio.com” cannot be contacted on the default ports.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.
So these emails then sit in my outbox. Sometimes I quit mail, relaunch and all the messages in the outbox all fly out at once. Sometimes that does not fix it and I either reboot, or quit/launch again until they send.
Any idea what the issue is? I can send email using squirrel mail, and on my iphone when mac mail is doing this, so it appears to be a maverick's mac mail issue.
    Thanks

  • Slow SMTP (outgoing mail) on my iPad

I am encountering an odd problem on my iPad. It takes a long time, thirty seconds to two minutes for outgoing mail to be sent. This is especially odd because I am using exactly the same SMTP settings as on my iPod Touch and MacBook and they don't have the problem. I have tried all other available port numbers for the SMTP server; this hasn't helped. Anyone have any suggestions?

I am having intermittant problems with sending email. When an email or two 'sticks' in the outbox, it seems to freeze all Mail comms, stopping incoming email traffic. Mail however also keeps on trying, so that the recipients are receiving multiple copies. Which is unfortunate as in a curious organisation, people are seeing the 'sent by iPad' tag line and understand that my new machine is causing problems.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • My MacBook pro has stopped connecting to the outgoing mail server smpt (Tiscali) server, still receives mail fine, and connects to the web. Any suggestions welcome.

My MacbookPro has always worked fine, receiving and sending emails through my server,Tiscali.  I took it to France for a few days, and was able to receive emails and use the web (through the wireless router and server in our accomodation), although as usual when away from home, I couldn't send emails. I tried to set up a new outgoing email route using O2 (as suggested by a web article), but it didn't work, so I deleted it, and used Tiscali webmail to send emails.
When I returned home, I selected my usual outgoing server (Tiscali), but found to my great surprise, that I could no longer send emails - Mail timed out, 'unable to connect'. I noticed when clicking on: Mail - Preferences, that in the outgoing mail smpt box, Tiscali appeared, as usual, but now was followed by (Offline)
Receiving emails and web connections have remained fine.
I've checked with Tiscali, and they can't find any problem with their server or my settings.  Grateful for any suggestions about possible causes for this problem, and how to fix it.
    Joe

I have just tried attaching the ethernet cable to the MacBook to see what happens. The system is fine, but when starting Mail, it never opens and locks up. You eventually just have to force quit out of the program.

  • Can I set my iCloud email as the outgoing mail server for my google apps email account in Mac Mail?

I have a google apps email account from an old client, all my work emails have been going to it for years. As I'm no longer affiliated with this client I'd like to make a transition to using my iCloud account for work. I asked people to use my iCloud address but as they've been using my google apps address for years it's what automatically comes up when they type my name.
I figure the easiest way to make a transition is if I reply to all the emails that arrive at my old address from my iCloud address and gradually they will start using my new address without realising it. But I can't find a simple way to do this.
In Mac Mail preferences > accounts > Google IMAP (my old account name) > Account information > Outgoing Mail server (SMTP) I'd like to set my iCloud SMTP server. But although my iCloud account uses its own outgoing mail server for its own account , it is not in the server list when I select my google account. I've tried to add it to the server list as smtp.mail.me.com but it caused my whole iCloud account to give me error messages until I force quit Mail...
    Any ideas?

In iCloud/Mail, have you tried going to Preferences (select with gear at lower left)/Composing and setting a Send from address there?

  • How do I fix my iPod touch's problem with hotmail outgoing mail server?

I have just received a new replacement iPod touch 8Gb.
On my old model I used the house wifi network to connect to HOTMAIL in the mail app it would set the account up immediately and work perfectly.
This time, when I tried to set the account up I had a long delay while it verified account details. Then after opting to set up account without using SSL an account was generated with an error message to say I may not be able to send or receive mail.
Incoming mail is OK, outgoing is not working.
The error message told me that I needed to configure my outgoing mail server.
My default outgoing server is set to smtp.live.com and works on port 587.
I have an additional server set to 'on', which is also smtp.live.com working on port 465, which was set up when I tried to alter the port number on the default server. Still no outgoing mail.
    Any suggestions?

Followed your instructions and again, account verification failed using SSL.
I chose to create without SSL and got the following message:
'The SMTP server 'smtp.live.com' is not responding'. I accepted the details,
the email Inbox populated, and everything looks normal.
    Same error is occuring:
'Connection to outgoing server 'smtp.live.com' failed. Additional outgoing mail servers can be configured in settings>mail, contacts and calendars'
    The settings are as follows:
    Incoming mail server
    Host Name: pop3.live.com
    username: is correct
    password: is correct
    Outgoing SMTP:
    Primary server
    host name: smtp.live.com
    username: is correct
password: is correct (has been re-entered just in case)
    Use SSL: OFF
    Authentication: password
    server port 587
I have duplicate SMTP servers listed under 'Other SMTP servers' with exactly the same details as above so it seems as if the iPod is retaining some settings even after I delete account.
Also, I wonder if there is anything I need to get the network administrator to do, because he did ask for the Wi-Fi address of my previous iPod touch could it just be a case of allowing it as a specific device on our network?

You say you have the pse 5 disk?
I guess you do't have a dvd drive on your new windows 8 computer?
Do you have access to another computer with a dvd drive?
Anyway if you can find another computer with a dvd drive you could copy the pse 5 install disc to removable device like a camera card or flash drive.
You can also buy cheap usb dvd drives.

  • Relaying Outgoing Mail Doesn't seem to work

    Hi,
I am a subscriber to Comcast ): and because many mail servers reject my mail from a non-static IP address, I use the option under Server Admin - Mail called "Relay outgoing mail through host: smtp.comcast.net

How can I get this working so all server like AOL accept my mail?

    #relayhost = $mydomain
    #relayhost = [gateway.my.domain]
    relayhost = smtp.comcast.net
    #relayhost = uucphost
    #relayhost = [an.ip.add.ress]
    # REJECTING UNKNOWN RELAY USERS
    then i did this:
    empco:~ james$ grep /etc/postfix/main.cf relayhost
grep: relayhost: No such file or directory
    Couple of things...
    1. Sorry, I got the grep command wrong way round! It should be...
    grep relayhost /etc/postfix/main.cf
All it does is show the lines in the file which contains "relayhost" - easier than listing the whole file.
    2. The GUI normally adds the options at the end of the file - so if grep lists another 'blank' relayhost, remark out your old one and edit the entry at the end. (just in case an existing blank entry at the end is overwriting your edited one).
    3. You can actually edit main.cf whilst the mail services are running. Just execute the reload command in Terminal afterwards...
    sudo postfix reload
The sudo prefix runs the command as root, so it will ask for the root (admin) password.
Any changes made like this should automatically show up in the Server Admin GUI. Click the 'refresh' button.
I've confirmed the above works on my test system, so here's hoping!
