Outgoing mail (SMTP) won't work

Setting up mail in new Imac and having problems with outgoing mail. Using SBC Global.net, (AT&T) have previously not had problems on prior system. Lost all previous settings, etc. on other so could not just transfer. Incoming mail seems to work find, but when trying to send keep getting msg. that the smtp server rejected the password. Have went to keychain and verified password, checked settings mail preferences, nothing seems to work, any ideas appreciated!

I think I may have just figured out a part of this puzzle. I have more than just my att account set up in Mail. Even though all of my accounts are setup to use the ATT SMTP server only (with the appropriate ATT login info) I am getting the same rejection notices as everyone else.
I noticed that in the rejection notice though, that it was saying I was sending mail from my other main account, not my sbcglobal (ATT) account. I thought that was strange since I set up all my accounts to use the SBC (ATT) login info for ATT's SMTP Server. So obviously it is a problem in Mail. Mail is somehow confused and sending some wrong piece of info to the SMTP server. When I changed the sender from my other account to my SBCGLOBAL account, the mail went right out with no other problems.
So this isn't a solution for those of you who are struggling with only an ATT account, but I think it points to a possible problem within Mail. The answer might be to delete the accounts in Mail and set them back up again. It's looking like Apple might need to make a tweak to Mail to fix this if indeed this is the correct cause. Hope this helps someone.

  • Outgoing mail server won't work! Help

I've had a perfectly working .mac email account for over a year. Suddenly Mail refuses to send my outgoing email from the default <smtp.mac.com:my.name> server. I have to use a server from my other email account to get the mails out.
Has something happened? I have not received any info about changed preferences.
    Please help, it is annoying.
    Thanks!

Very likely that your ISP has changed policy with regard to allowing third party SMTP on Port 25. Switch to Port 587, and test -- see:

When I updated to OS 5.0 my old apple id which was not an e-mail address won't work anymore, how can I fix this?

There is no way to consolidate iTunes accounts.
Setting up an iPhone has never required creation of a new Apple ID.
You've apparently purchased content with both Apple ID's.  Sign into the device with the correct Apple ID and sync the content.

  • Mail.app won't work properly after installing Yosemite

My "new viewer window" in Mail.app won't work after installing Yosemite. I can not access the viewer window and thus none of my email.
    How can I fix this?
    Mail.app v 8.0

some updates on this issue, Mail application uses the same proxy that has been set on your system (system preferences==>Network==>Advanced==>proxies). People usually use HTTP/HTTPS proxy for surfing the web. You should make sure to set SOCKS proxy as well. Mail application works with SOCKS proxy. Note that port number for SOCKS proxy is usually different from the port number for HTTP and HTTPS but the IP address of  your server (apparently) is the same.
    Hope this helps

  • Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server

Trying to test/setup send email at EMDBControl to my email [email protected], wondering what i should put in
    outgoing Mail (SMTP) server box?
after setting up notification when i press test button, getting erro, [email protected] : Failed to connect to gateway:smtp.gmail.com sending failed

As far as I'm aware, GMail isn't running a public SMTP server. Assuming you're running this on your home machine, does your ISP have a SMTP server you could use?

  • Mail server stops IMAP and POP services, SMTP won't work

    Hello fellow Lion Server users,
I am trying hard to get my mail server productive. I want to fetch mails from my ISP's IMAP mail server and distribute it to all my devices via my own mail server. Also the mails shall be sent via ISPs SMTP.
After managing it being able to send and receive email in the way I want I realized that web server was down. Because I want to use the integrated web mail and Wiki server I had to fix that. After restoring to default values in httpd.conf and others I got that problem solved just to realize that I am not able any more to send and receive email. I would be grateful if you could help me out.
The current status is that Server admin app claims the mail server still running, but POP, IMAP stopped whilst SMTP is running. In my mail.app I can send Emails successfully but they never reach the addressee. Receiving is just not possible at all. The connection doctor in integrated in Mail.app won't find a problem. It claims SMTP and IMAP connections I used before are working.
I use a dyndns forwarding to my server at home. Lion server is up to date. Port forwarding in the router is enabled (for each port Apple suggests).
Even in local network (with this very machine) it is not possible to successfully send or receive emails using localhost. My guess is that something went wrong in the configuration files but I don't know where I have to look and for what exactly.
I also tried a program called MailServe after running into the first problems with the mail server which did so far a good job in configuring of Postfix, Dovecot and Fetchmail but now I am stuck.
Do you have any hints for me, your help would be highly appreciated. Thank you.

  • Outgoing mail suddenly won't send

For years I've had a POP account, using Mac Mail to send and rec ATT/Yahoo mail. In the past week or so, my account has decided it won't send anything and says the server can't be accessed. However, incoming mail works fine, and my wife's POP account on another log-in with ATT/Yahoo mail also works fine sending and receiving. I tried deleting my account and starting over, which allowed me to send one email successfully. Next time I logged in, though, it was back to balking. Any ideas?

Hey, I found a fix for Mac who use ATT / UVerse / Yahoo!!
The directions that are given by ATT are only good for setting up an ATT e-mail account on a Mac. If for some reason you need to use another provider (gasp!) their settings will NOT work. The workaround is to have an agent open up port 25 so that you can use another outgoing smtp server. In my case, my provider is fatcow.com (really!). So once port 25 was opened up I could add smtp.fatcow.com as an outgoing mail server. In that case, they do require password authentication. Your case may be simpler and you may not need authentication at all (Inisight, WOW, RoadRunner etc.)
So it is possble, despite the dearth of information on ATT's UVerse web site. : P
    Cheers,
    : )

  • Outgoing mail server doesn't work

    Hi,
2 hours on the phone with Verizon and they couldn't help me....
I moved to a new apartment, and from Comcast to Verizon. Now, it's not recognizing my Outgoing Mail Server.
I changed it to the SMTP that Verizon recommended - nothing.
I tried the solution suggested elsewhere in this board, for changing the port from 25 to 587, and - nothing. Same problem.
Any ideas? I'm at my wits end here.

Huh, I don't know what just happened....I tried your suggestion by instead of just having my verizon username as the outgoing username, having the entire email address ([email protected]). Still didn't work, but then i tried removing the password authentication -- which I'd already tried before -- and the mail sent. Very strange...Glad that's working now!
Now I need to get my AirPort to work with Verizon - the other one of my challenges...See my message under AirPort express, if you care to offer any thoughts

  • My outgoing mail servers aren't working

Most of my outgoing mail servers, including one of my iCloud accounts, are not working. This has been an ongoing problem, and as I've gotten the error message, I've just redirected the outgoing message to use a reliable outgoing server.
Now, however, I've gotten a new computer, and the "reliable" outgoing server won't work anymore.
I've gone to every ISP's website and copied the settings exactly, but I'm getting the same error message on both of my computers, that the message could not send using ______ server.
On some of the ISP's message boards, I've seen the same issue from many Mac Mail.app users, but no satisfactory answers. (Most people just say, "you must have copied the settings wrong" and have no back-up answers if this isn't really the problem.)
Any thoughts? I hate using webmail!
    Thanks!

I forgot to mention, I think, that this problem exists in Mail.app.
I just downloaded and tried to use Thunderbird, and the problem doesn't exist there!
This may be a temporary solution, although I prefer the Mail.app UI, where I can see all of the messages from every inbox in the same window.

  • Outgoing mail server won't save

Just updated to cable modem and new provider. In Mail, Preferences I reset my Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) with the settings from my new provider. This server is the only one in the list and I checked the box "Use only this server."
However, at least three times a day for the last couple days since I set this up, I am unable to send a message. This is not always when I restart Mail; it has happened when Mail has been open and I have already sent something.
The error message asks me to select a server. When I look at the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) section in Account Information, it is set to None.  If I go in and reset it, the system prompts me to save it, and I can send that message (and many after it). But this has happened several times; it seems to occasionally forget that I selected this server. I am not sure what else to do.
    OS X 10.7.3
    Mail 5.2
    Advice eagerly sought...

My problem is similar.  Every so often (random, no pattern) out of the blue the SMTP server is forgotten. I don't have multiple outgoing servers, so it just asks me 'which one' I want to use.  And of course there's only one listed, so I use that, and it sends just fine.  WHY does it keep forgetting to use the one server I have listed?  Makes no sense.

  • My apple mail application won't work on my macbook, iPad, or iPhone.

About a week ago, my apple mail (aol and google accounts) stopped pulling. They won't work on any of my apple products. It keeps saying unknown error. It will add my contacts for google and calendar, but nothing for AOL.
I have erased my computer and reinstalled the new operating system thinking maybe something was missing (component wise) but it still won't work. I don't know what to do. Please help.

This is what I am seeing on my screen. It won't let me even add a google or AOL account. It keeps saying there is a connection error.

  • Yahoo mail messenger won't work in FF, but will in IE. What gives?

'''bold text''" Okay so what is the deal? I have Yahoo mail messenger working fine on FF one week, the next it won't even show me my received messages? Now it's working fine on IE but I hate using IE and would prefer to use that for one site only. Why isn't not compatible anymore with FF? I've already changed settings on Yahoo so it's not them. Please help?

I posted this problem a couple of days ago. I have 50 or more groups, some with several hundreds of names & these groups no longer import. I have gone to apple genius bar & they are clueless. Apparently apple opted to make maverick work for gmail but now it won't work for mac mail.
