Outgoing SMTP authentication on iPad 2

I've been supporting my father-in-law over the last month or so as he's been through the BT Mail migration.
(I'm an ex IT technician).
All working fine until a couple of weeks ago when his settings stopped working on the iPad.  SInce then whatever I've tried we've struck a brick wall getting his iPad to send...
I know the settings are all 100% - we've checked and checked; reset the master password altogether; he's spoken to BT help on numerous occasions, but still no joy.
His authentiaction works fine through the BT portal, so he can send and receive via a browser.
He's receiving fine using IMAP on the iPAD, but his credentials won't authenticate using SMTP.
Here's the mail settings:
He's used his address with and without the @btinternet.com
mail server address is set to 'mail.btinternet.com'
Port number is set to '465'
SSL encryption is set to 'ON
It's a simple set-up at home.  One laptop, one iPad, BT user with home hub, single email address which is the same as the master account....
I can do no more at this end and he can get no further with the standard help line.
Can someone more technical at BT have a look at his account and check to see if his authentication passwords need synching?
Thanks
Andy
Solved!
Go to Solution.

Try this. Delete the account and restart the iPad.
Once it has restarted set it up again
Go to your iPad home screen and tap Settings.
Scroll down to Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
Tap Add Account.
Scroll down and tap Other.
Tap Add Mail Account.
Put the name you want people to see when they get mail from you in the Name field.
Enter your username in the Address field. For example, [email protected]
Enter your password in the Password field.
In the Description field enter the name you want to use to identify the account.
Tap Next. If you get an error message at this point, tap OK.
Make sure that IMAP is selected at the top of the screen.
In the Incoming Mail Server section, change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com
Now enter 993 in the Server port and set SSL to on.
Then scroll down to the Outgoing Mail Server section and change the Host Name to mail.btinternet.com
Now enter 465 in the Server port and set SSL to on.
Tap Save.
Your settings will now be verified and you'll then see your Account screen. If this doesn’t happen automatically tap your account to access your email.

  • Has the outgoing SMTP Authentication been fixed on...

Has the outgoing SMTP Authentication been fixed on E71 because I have set up a mail account and not been able to send any emails. The error it displays offers me to input once again my user ID and pass. Can someone help me?

A poll on one particular forum suggested that around 20% of Macbook owners have had the case crack near the right palmrest.
If that were the case, there would be about 300,000 MacBook owners with this problem. That is certainly NOT the case. I've seen two or three posts here about something like that, but this is a technical support forum, you're supposed to find people with problems here! You're not going to see any posts from the hundreds of thousands of MacBook owners who don't have that problem. Even if only 10% of those 300,000 MacBook owners posted here, there'd be 30,000 people with that problem posting here. There's nothing like that going on now.

  • Outgoing SMTP Authentication Method Problem (functional option, require signin, not available)

    Hello all,
I'm trying to set up an account on my Thunderbird and I'm having a weird problem. I can receive emails on it fine but I cannot send any emails. Whenever I try to send any emails I get the error message "Syntactically invalid EHLO argument(s)".
This email address that I'm trying to add as an account on Thunderbird works perfectly fine in my Gmail Android app on my phone. The difference in the Outgoing SMTP settings are that on my (working) gmail app the Security Type = NONE and the "Require signin" box is CHECKED, whereas in Thunderbird I can set my Outgoing SMTP Security Type setting to = NONE but I do not have the option to "Require signin". All of the options that are available do not work.
    Is there any solution?
    Thank you!
    Best, Nick

Hi Toad-Hall, thanks for offering to help. Here's the text below. Please let me know if you think this could be a Thunderbird issue, or more likely with my host...

  • Mail refuses to acknowledge the real outgoing SMTP settings - no work mail

I am having trouble sending mail from my work email.
When I press "send" I get the message that I cannot send the message due to "SMTP authentication turned on in your email client".
My mail preferences clearly state that I have NOT turned on outgoing smtp authentication.
When I then open the message in the Outbox I cannot send it until I've manually pressed "Get mail" and then try to send it again.
    - Do you know how to make it work again, or why Mail behaves this way?
Other notes: I can use the same address without problems on a PC and cell phone.
I recently changed from checking for new mail every 5 minutes to checking manually.

It looks like this outgoing server uses a form of authentication known as “POP before SMTP” or “SMTP after POP”:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/POPbeforeSMTP
The way to set up that outgoing server in Mail would be setting Authentication to None in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, and either telling Mail to regularly check for new mail in Preferences > General (e.g. every 5 or 15 minutes), or manually checking for new mail before sending.
If that outgoing server works that way and you’ve stopped checking for mail regularly then, well, it should be no surprise that you have to check for new mail manually in order to be able to send...

  • Outgoing SMTP for Mac Mail Authentication (none or password)?

i have had to set up a test account due to some corruption issues and i have a new temporary password for iCloud.
and i am in the outgoing SMTP > ADVANCED section of mail.
does anyone know if i set up a SMTP server for Mac Mail as having an authentication set to "none" or set to "password" and whether this password should be my new temp pass?

If your ISP requires POP before SMTP authentication which requires checking the account's incoming mail server for new mail before being able to send with the account's SMTP server (checking the account for new mail should be required once per session only), then authentication for the SMTP server should be set to None.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the account information tab for the account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Setting button below.
If Password is selected for SMTP authentication, change it to None and test if this resolves the problem.
If None is selected and your ISP requires password authentication for their SMTP server, select Password and enter the account's user name and password required for the authentication.

  • Outgoing mail without smtp authentication

My mail account uses an outgoing smtp server which does not require any authentication but IOS5 does not have this option (only various forms of authentication) - how do I set up an outgoing server without authentication

  • Setting up a mail client and the outgoing SMTP set...

If you switch to BT and you already have email accounts set up in a mail client such as Mac Mail, you will not find any help from BT to set up correct outgoing SMTP mail server settings. Most other ISP's are usually very helpful with this but BT have a policy that is designed to make things very difficult to use anything but a BT email account. They claim that it is "To protect our email server from abuse by spammers". However, the solution to this has potentially quite the opposite effect as you will not be able to enable SSL for it to work!!
OK so the first thing to do is create a new 'MY BT' account and then go to 'email' and create a new BT email account. Keep a note of address and password as you will need this later.
Go back to the main BT home page and click on mail. You should land on a page that has the new 'BT Mail Account' in the left column and above a purple tool bar with 'Settings at the end. Click on 'Settings'.
In the left column, underneath 'Mail' click on 'Accounts'
Click 'Add' and fill in the details of your 3rd party (Non BT) account. They encourage IMAP only but I used 'POP" with no problems as I have no intention of using the BT mail client.
In 'Mail settings' fill out the mail server details from your email provider or where your site is actually hosted. For example if you are using 000webhost.com then they will advise 'mx.000webhost.com' or may be 'mail.yourwebsitename'
The correct port to enter is the port listed in your web client. For me with Mac Mail then this is listed in preferences and if you check this then also double check that use SSL is NOT checked
Enter the email user name and password of your 3rd party account
Make sure in 'Security' that 'Requires SSL' is NOT checked
    Then save the account
Click on the 'Email' link in the purple tool bar and there now under the 'BT Mail Account' should be your 3rd party account. Click on it and it should now load your email. If it doesn't then you will have to try again the steps above as there is no point in going any further if the BT client cannot access your account.
OK if it is working then go to your email client (Mac Mail in my case) and in preference set up your 3rd party account as follows.
Incoming mail server is as the info from your host ( like as in 'mx.000webhost.com' above). Enter user name and password for the 3rd party account.
Now set up an Outgoing mail server (SMPT). I just called it BT with the server name 'mail.btinternet.com'. In the advance section click use default ports. It actually uses 465 if you do not have a default option.
    Do NOT enable SSL
    Set Authentication to 'Password'
Then in user name enter the details of the NEW BT account you opened for user name and password.
And that's it. Well it works for me! I got no assistance whatsoever from BT in trying to solve this. I asked to cancel my new BT infinity service after only 5 days when it proved so difficult to get an email client like mac mail to work. I had 4 calls from them and even the 'Tech Experts' had no idea what I was talking to them about!

    Melski wrote:
Ah yes Thank you Oliver that is a better solution. However all the settings in the BT client have to remain as no SSL. If you change to use SSL there you will not be able access the 3rd party email account.
Your email client cannot handle SSL for SMTP (BT) and non-SSL for POP3 (000webhost)?
    Oliver.

  • Is there a way to bypass having to use an outgoing SMTP server?

    Hi all,
I'm always mailing from different places with my MacBook, and it's a drag that I have to figure out the outgoing SMTP server the whole time.
You don't have to fill in outgoing SMTP servers if you're using Thunderbird or Entourage, but I prefer working with mail because of it's Address Book & iCal integration.
Is there a way NOT to have to fill in a local SMTP server, without transferring to a paid .mac account etc?

Sounds like you've got it solved, but just for future reference, Google Mail (Gmail) allows you to use their outgoing mail servers for any email anywhere. I've got a Mac email, so I use the MobileMe Mail Server for that.
But I've also got another email that's non-Mac that I use for a vacation rental property. It uses a domain I bought. Then all I did was create a Gmail email account and then I can use Gmail's outgoing mail server (smtp.gmail.com) for this other email that's neither a Gmail or Mac account. You need to create a Gmail account to make this work cuz it uses authentication (Gmail email and password) to allow access to Gmail's outgoing mail server. But you don't need to use the Gmail email at all.
Hopefully this isn't too confusing. The bottom line to all this is I can use Gmail's outgoing mail server for any email address I have from anywhere in the world. I never have to change it.

  • Moved from DC to NC now smtp authentication with Cox won't work on roadrunn

I just moved from DC to NC. I have a cox.net email I prefer to use. Cox allows smtp authentication over other ISPs. I had RCN in DC and it worked perfectly. But now, with Time Warner (RoadRunner), it doesn't work. (Incoming still works fine, this is just about outgoing/smtp.) The smtp authentication is set up EXACTLY as it was in DC, but the connection just times out. Oddly, it works fine when I am connected directly to the cable modem. BUT, it does not work when I am connected to my wireless network using an airport extreme. I have deleted the smtp server a hundred times. I have selected SSL and unselected SSL a hundred times. I have tried no authentication. I have tried removing the "cox.net" after my name in the outgoing mail settings. I have reset the airport extreme to factory settings and set the network up again. NOTHING is working. Why would this work directly connected to the modem but not through the EXACT SAME WIRELESS NETWORK and settings I had with RCN??? Any tips/help is greatly appreciated. Oh, and all of my other non-RoadRunner smtp authentication accounts work fine. And my me.com email works fine.

Thanks again, Bob! Here is the error I'm getting for all three usual ports (25, 465 & 587):
    CONNECTED Apr 07 08:26:51.776 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNegotiatedSSL] -- host:smtp.west.cox.net -- port:465 -- socket:0x116c00450 -- thread:0x116f54800
    READ Apr 07 08:26:52.090 [kCFStreamSocketSecurityLevelNegotiatedSSL] -- host:smtp.west.cox.net -- port:465 -- socket:0x116c00450 -- thread:0x116f54800
    554 fed1rmimpo03.cox.net bizsmtp connection refused from 71.77.138.209
It looks to my untrained eye that the cox servers are refusing me. Is that correct? So I should call cox, right? And how do I find the IP address that I'm being refused under?
Sorry to be so ignorant, but your help is greatly appreciated!

  • AMAVIS blocking outgoing SMTP despite main.cf settings

My mail server, which has been running without issues for years, suddenly started silently dropping outgoing emails sent from my personal account. After some digging I have found that my outgoing mail is being tagged as spam and being silently dropped without being sent. The emails are being tagged as spam because my home dynamic IP is listed in SORBS DUL.
Here is an example line from my amavis.log file:
    Oct 19 09:29:13 Server.local /usr/bin/amavisd[1181]: (01181-05) SPAM, <[email protected]> -> <[email protected]>, Yes, hits=6.722 tag=-999 tag2=5 kill=5 tests=ALL_TRUSTED, AWL, BAYES_50, DNSFROM_RFCWHOIS, RCVDIN_SORBSDUL, quarantine spam-3a4766c00e2107263ba8c8adadbba3c3-20071019-092909-01181-05 (spam-quarantine)
This has never been a problem for me before, and I assumed I was safe from this issue because I have the following lines in my main.cf file:
smtpdclientrestrictions = permitsaslauthenticated permit_mynetworks permitsaslauthenticated permit
    smtpdrecipientrestrictions = permitsasl_authenticated,permit_mynetworks,reject_unauthdestination,permit
My server is set to reject any outgoing mail unless you log in with a valid username and password, and I have double checked that I am authenticating for outgoing SMTP in Entourage.
Can anyone help me understand why spam checks are taking place when these settings are place as well as how to resolve this issue?
    Thanks!

Your main.cf settings only tell Postfix to avoid any further checks on authenticated users and accept mail into the queue. The content filter (amavisd) on OS X Server is configured to be a "post-queue" service. As such amavisd will examine any mail being passed on from the postfix queue.
There are many ways to prevent this. The simplest being the use of an additional submission port for authenticated users which makes no use of content filtering at all.

  • SMTP authentication disabled in Outlook

    Hello,
Was a security or outlook update recently released that disabled SMTP authentication in Outlook 2003/2007?  I've had several users report that this has been disabled; all are using various flavors of Outlook and Windows.

    Hi,
“SMTP requires authentication” option is set when using a POP3, IMAP or HTTP account in Outlook. If you are using Outlook 2007, we need to follow these steps to configure it:
    1. On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
    2. Select the account you want to change.
    3. Click More Settings, and then you can change the following:
    4. On the Outgoing Server tab, you can specify whether your outgoing SMTP mail server requires authentication. This is almost always required if your ISP allows you to send e-mail messages through your ISP e-mail account when you are not
directly connected to the ISP network, for example, if you want to send an e-mail message with your home ISP e-mail account and you are away from home connected to your work network.
For more information about it, please refer to the following article:

  • SMTP authentication description

    Hi everyone :
I don't know what is Ironport SMTP authentication feature after reading the Adv-UserGuide.
Is it the smtp authentication use to authen the user connect to email server and How it work between email server and client if it is , As we know Ironport is email gateway , How Ironport can control the user connect to email server ?
Is it only work for Outgoing email authentication ?
    thx thx !

I would say that SMTP Authentication is most commonly used for a segment of your end users that are traveling on business or work outside of the internal company network and can't be connected directly to the company mailserver to send out their outgoing mail.
Since a user outside the network may not be able to directly connect to the corporate mailserver, what mail administrators try to set up is the IronPort appliance to do smtp authentication against an Active Directory server for example and then if the sender authenticates, they'll be able to relay using the IronPort appliance.
If you run into any problems or questions, feel free to post the issue here and we'll try to iron it out.

  • SMTP Authentication Function

Hi, i want to ask the function of smtp authentication in ironport. Is it used to authenticate with the exchange server or per client using LDAP? When i configure the smtp authentication, is it used for incoming or outgoing connection ? Thanks.
    Regards
    Alkuin Melvin

    Dear Alkuin,
For SMTP authentication configuration, you can configure SMTP auth profile under 'Network'-'SMTP Authentication' (LDAP, forward and outgoing).
In my opinion, you can choose to enable SMTP AUTH in mail flow polic(ies) of existing listener (port 25) and/or a new listener using another port (say port 8025). The reason to use 'port number other than port 25' is that some residential ISP or hotel internet connection will block outgoing port 25 connection (due to antispam reason - blocking botnet/malware infected hosts to send spams and ISP IP address gets blacklisted).
For existing listener, you can configure SMTP AUTH "Preferred" setting in default mail flow policy, and then users can authenticate and then relay emails through IronPort from public IP address (configure email client's outgoing SMTP gateway with IronPort public IP address and port 25). One point to note is that if the user is sending from a poor reputation IP, their SMTP connection may be blocked or throttled.
For listener using port number other than 25 (e.g. 8025) , you can configure to have just one sender group with default mail flow policy configured with SMTP AUTH "Required". The email client needs to configure with outgoing SMTP gateway with IronPort listener's public IP address and specific port number (say port 8025). In this way, only authenticated user can relay emails through this listener and they can avoid port 25 blocking issue or sending host's reputation issue as mentioned above.
    Cheers,
    Tommy

  • TS3276 I cannot get my outgoing SMTP server togo "On-Line" and cannot send out emails.

I cannot get my outgoing SMTP server togo "On-Line" and cannot send out emails.

I had this problem too but I fixed it today.
Go to the mail menu preferences.
    Click on account in question.
Select the outgoing SMTP mail server (the one offline), this has a drop down list, click on the edit server list.
    Click on the advanced button.
Make sure use default port is checked.
Make sure SSL is unchecked (unless your provider requires it, mine does not work with it checked).
    Have authentication set to password.
User name should be your email address for that account.
Make sure correct password is entered (for some strange reason my password box was blank on this account).
    Push the ok button.
For me the SSL box was checked and the password was missing. This is strange to me considering I have unchecked the SSL Box on the mail preference advance page. Also, I went through the complete set up account when I first created the account, why was my outgoing server password box empty?
    I hope this helps.

  • X6 - Is SMTP Authentication Impossible?

(I am only interested in POP!)
I want to use an SMTP server which is not provided by the operator (network or broadband)
The only form of authentication catered for seems to be "POP before SMTP" where you have to authorise sending using the same login as you first receive with.
    Settings I see are:
Incoming : there is no field for remote mailbox address - weird?
Outgoing: there IS a field for remote mailbox address - why? The username and password fields provided seem to relate to this remote mailbox address, not to the SMTP server. (Anyway, they already exist in incoming settings!)
E.g.. I can receive from my remote mailbox fine. That's "[email protected]"
I can't authenticate using the "smtp.o2.co.uk" server to send using my address of "[email protected]" as there is nowhere to enter my o2 authentication details. (I can send unauthorised to o2 addresses)
The above example works fine in Profimail email client and with Profimail I can send emails carrying the "[email protected]" address with o2 authentication via the o2 SMTP server by either t-mobile network or by tiscali broadband WLAN to any of various test addresses.
Am I doing it wrong in the native client or is it impossible?

I think you have ran into constraints of Nokia Email/Messaging Service. You should be able to bypass this service and use your Tiscali mail accout directly by switching your phone to offline profile before creating a mailbox.
However, some network providers might deny access to SMTP servers other than their own to reduce outgoing spam. If you can access third-party SMTP server from your desktop, it doesn't necessarily mean you could access them from the mobile network too. Outgoing SMTP server should always be that of your current network operator and any proper operator should allow sending mail using third party sender address at least on authenticated SMTP. On unauthenticated SMTP, sender addresses might be limited to domains and/or addresses hosted by operator.
