Outgoing SMTP server is offline

MacBook Pro, Using OSX Yosemite, apple mail client, gmail address
IMAP addresses are online but SMTP outgoing is offline.   I have tried Connection Doctor and get the red dot everytime.  Cannot try diagnostics as it is light grey. Please advise asap.

Hi Suzie9,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
It sounds like you're not able to send email from Gmail on your MacBook Pro after updating to Yosemite.
There could be several causes of the behavior. I would start with the troubleshooting steps in the "Mail Connection Doctor shows one or more red dots in the account Status column" section of this article:
OS X Mail: Troubleshooting sending and receiving email messages
This article contains a variety of steps that can help resolve an issue like the one you're seeing.
All the best,

    Hello Jeba1969
Use Connection Doctor to see what is causing it to be offline, like a incorrect password or a different setting for authentication. Check out the article below to get a start on troubleshooting your issues with sending mail.

  • Outgoing SMTP server says "offline" can't send e-mails

Set up new iCloud e-mail. Incoming mail works. Outgoing SMTP server says "offline." Can't send e-mails from this account. Need info on how to set it up. Thanks.
    M

You might want to try signing out of your iCloud account, then back in.  Go to System Preferences>iCloud, click Sign Out, choose Delete at all of the prompts, restart your Mac, then sign back in.
This deletes the account and your iCloud data from your Mac, but not from iCloud.  It will reappear on your Mac when you sign back in, after a brief delay as it redownloads.

  • TS3276 Outgoing smtp server 'offline'

My outgoing smtp server is correctly configured yet shows as 'offline'. How can I put it online?
    Thank u.

Assume you've solved the problem yourself or it corrected itself but if not try going into your mail preferences and the account settings.  For each account you can edit the outgoing SMTP server list.  Go into the advanced settings for the account showing offline.  Even if there is a password stored, retype the account password and click OK.  The account should go back online.

  • TS1307 my "outgoing Mail server is offline and I can't get it back online

I can send  and receive emails from my iphone, ipad and online mac account, but can not send emails on my mail from my macbook, it stopped working suddenly a few weeks ago and says all my outgoing smtp's are offline, how do i get them back online?

Thanks so much for the quick response.
I did repair permissions and tried Mail again, then decided to double check the Mail Prefs of my MB Pro (where Mail works fine) and the iMac (G5 I think?).  And do I feel stupid:  the outgoing mail server on the iMac was smtp.mac.com whereas the server on the MB Pro was smtp.me.com!  So I changed that and now Mail can be sent from the iMac.
Thanks so much, I love these forums.  Whenever I have a problem, I check the forums first!
    Cheers,

  • TS3276 I cannot get my outgoing SMTP server togo "On-Line" and cannot send out emails.

I cannot get my outgoing SMTP server togo "On-Line" and cannot send out emails.

I had this problem too but I fixed it today.
Go to the mail menu preferences.
    Click on account in question.
Select the outgoing SMTP mail server (the one offline), this has a drop down list, click on the edit server list.
    Click on the advanced button.
Make sure use default port is checked.
Make sure SSL is unchecked (unless your provider requires it, mine does not work with it checked).
    Have authentication set to password.
User name should be your email address for that account.
Make sure correct password is entered (for some strange reason my password box was blank on this account).
    Push the ok button.
For me the SSL box was checked and the password was missing. This is strange to me considering I have unchecked the SSL Box on the mail preference advance page. Also, I went through the complete set up account when I first created the account, why was my outgoing server password box empty?
    I hope this helps.

  • SMTP server going "offline"

I have a Cox email address set up in the Mail application, and have been having some trouble sending mail. Receiving is fine, just appears to be a problem with the outgoing mail servers.
I am using smtp.west.cox.net for my outgoing smtp server. But, no matter what I do, it keeps going "offline".
I've made sure my account information is 100% correct, and double checked it 1000 times.
I've run the Mail Connection Doctor and it says that:
    1) Mail was able to connect to the internet
    2) It could not connect to thins SMTP server.
What is going on, and how am I supposed to fix this?
    UPDATE:
Also, for some reason, there is a constant Apple spinner not stopping, next to the "Sending..." label on the sidebar on the left of the Mail app.
How can I make that stop?

  • Cannot edit outgoing SMTP server list in mail.app

Did a fresh install of Snow Leopard on a new 13" Macbook Pro unibody and was trying to add an IMAP email account. After failing to connect, I was trying to specify the outgoing port and realized that I could not edit the outgoing SMTP server list.
    Steps to reproduce error:
    1. Open mail.app
    2. Go to Mail > Preferences
    3. Select "Accounts" tab and select any mail account
    4. Select "Account Information" tab and click Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) drop down menu
    5. Select "Edit SMTP Server List..."
After that point the instead of opening the list of servers with their settings, it simply returns to the "Account Information" screen. I'm a bit confused because I've never had this happen before in any other version of mail app. I cannot edit or delete any outgoing mail server accounts because of this. Any help will be much appreciated. Thank you for your time and consideration.

This should not happen. Had you migrated back to the fresh install the Mail folder in User-Library? Or is this a clean setup? I would go to User-Library-Preferences, and drag the com.apple.mail.plist to the trash, then open Mail and try again.

  • Is there a way to bypass having to use an outgoing SMTP server?

    Hi all,
I'm always mailing from different places with my MacBook, and it's a drag that I have to figure out the outgoing SMTP server the whole time.
You don't have to fill in outgoing SMTP servers if you're using Thunderbird or Entourage, but I prefer working with mail because of it's Address Book & iCal integration.
Is there a way NOT to have to fill in a local SMTP server, without transferring to a paid .mac account etc?

Sounds like you've got it solved, but just for future reference, Google Mail (Gmail) allows you to use their outgoing mail servers for any email anywhere. I've got a Mac email, so I use the MobileMe Mail Server for that.
But I've also got another email that's non-Mac that I use for a vacation rental property. It uses a domain I bought. Then all I did was create a Gmail email account and then I can use Gmail's outgoing mail server (smtp.gmail.com) for this other email that's neither a Gmail or Mac account. You need to create a Gmail account to make this work cuz it uses authentication (Gmail email and password) to allow access to Gmail's outgoing mail server. But you don't need to use the Gmail email at all.
Hopefully this isn't too confusing. The bottom line to all this is I can use Gmail's outgoing mail server for any email address I have from anywhere in the world. I never have to change it.

  • Why has mail suddenly started saying that my outgoing mail server is offline?

Why has mail suddenly started saying that my outgoing mail server is offline?
I can receive mail from my ISP using Apple Mail but as of this morning I can't send via my ISP.
When I check Mail preferences, they say that my ISP's outgoing mail server is "offline".
I haven't changed any settings, so  what's gone wrong? I need a fix. At the moment I'm having to use Gmail.

If your email is hosted by Google then there are several known issues with Apple Mail under Mavericks accessing Gmail.  Using a web browser is a good backup.  In Apple Mail you can goto the menubar, choose Mailbox and choose take all accounts offline.  Then bring them back online.  Worst case you may need to delete and readd the account (usually if something was setup wrong) Menu bar - Mail > Accounts.
If you have turned on 2 step Google Authentication then you'll need to issue a specific email password for Apple Mail to use to bypass authentication.  Google the steps.
Best of luck in getting your mail server online.  Hopefully you can specify multiple servers in settings.

  • How does Mail decide which outgoing SMTP server to use?

I have Mail setup with two accounts - one for home use and one for work.  Each has its own outgoing SMTP server.  My question: how does mail decide which outgoing server to use?  I don't want to mix work and home stuff.
Specifically, what happens in these three scenarios?
    1) I compose a new mail.  Does it always use the first account's outgoing SMTP server or does Mail look at the recipient's domain and base its decision on that?
    2) I reply to a work email.  Is Mail smart enough to look at my domain or the sender's to know to use the work outgoing SMTP server?
    3) I reply to home email.  Is Mail smart enough to look at my domain or the sender's to know to use the home outgoing SMTP server?
    Any information is much appreciated.
    Tom

    Hi Juergen,
Thanks for the suggestion - I had to "Customize" the viewable header to include the "From:" ("Von:") line to see who I was sending as.  As far as the "use this SMTP only" checkbox is concerned - they're checked on both my accounts - so I'm not sure how much of an impact that has.  To be honest, I thought this checkbox was meant to limit your outgoing mail (for that account) to this mail server only.  I thought that if it was not checked, Mail will try to send the mail via another SMTP server if the one for this account is not reachable.....after all, why else would Apple allow you to check both servers' "use this SMTP only" checkbox?
But this is good enough for me - now I can see who i'ms ending as.
    Thanks,
    tom

  • TS4002 Outgoing mail server is offline

Two out of three icloud accounts show the outgoing server offline.  Any suggestions?

Same here: I keep on getting the same message from Apple Mail, only for 1 of the 3 accounts set. The only way to send emails from that account is by using the web interface.
This is the error I get:
Connections to the server “p06-smtp.mail.me.com” on the default ports timed out.
Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent.

  • Mail.app: Select outgoing (SMTP) server per message?

    Dear community members,
I'm looking for a solution to the following problem:
I do have multiple e-mail accounts which are configured in the following way: One of them is the master account (let's say [email protected]) added to Mail.app as a POP account. The other ones (let's call them [email protected] and [email protected]) are on different servers and are configured to forward all incoming mail to [email protected] They are, however, not added to Mail.app as additional accounts. That is because it's not necessary for receiving mail with these addresses, since all incoming mail is forwarded to [email protected], anyway, and therefore immediately available in Mail.app.
The problem arises when sending e-mails within Mail.app. I can easily add all three addresses in the "Mail" > "Settings" > "Accounts" settings window by entering them in the e-mail-address-field separated by comma (e.g. "[email protected], [email protected], [email protected]“). This allows me to select the desired outgoing address on a per-message basis in the compose window.
There is, however, a problem with this: This setting means that mail from all three addresses is being sent using the same SMTP server. This can cause problems for domains that do have SPF-records, for example. Therefore, I'd very much prefer to not only select the outgoing mail address on a per-message-basis, but also the SMTP-server I'd like to use. Since Mail.app allows me to add multiple SMTP servers in the account's settings window, I believe there has to be a way to select which one to use on a per-message-basis? Whenever there's a problem with an SMTP-server, a window opens up asking me which of the alternative SMTP servers I'd like to use, instead. This indicates that this function exists – it's just far from obvious for me where to find it in a normal usage scenario.
Does anyone have an idea? Any hint is welcome!
    Thanks
    Nick

That has nothing to do with it. I ended up working around the problem by changing the account name.
But I still think this is a bug, so I won't mark the topic as answered (a workaround is not the solution).
