Outlook 2010 and Authentication to Domain Controllers

I apologize for what is probably a dumb question, but not being an Exchange Administrator and having received some conflicting information, what I want to know is if there is any requirement that the client be able to authenticate to a domain controller.
The reason why I am asking is because we are working on a restricted VPN realm but we would like Outlook (not OWA) to work. As long as we have a domain controller directly accessible from the client, Outlook works. As soon as we restrict connections to that
domain controller, Outlook stops working. I thought that the mail server having the Hub Transport Role would mean that the client did not authenticate directly to the DCs for Outlook but via the mail server. Again, I'm not an Exchange admin so I could be misunderstanding
this.
One person's thought was that maybe an add-in needed to authenticate and that might be what is causing the issue, but we're running low on ideas and I figured I would see if I could get a definitive answer here.
Exchange version is 2010.
Thanks is advance!
WB

Hi,
According to your description, I am still not quite sure about your issue. If possible, could you please provide more information about "we have a domain controller directly accessible from the client" and "restrict connections to that domain
controller"?
Generally, when the client user setup Exchange account in Outlook by using auto setup, the Autodiscover service in Exchange server would be authenticated and connect to Exchange server. Then this service would retrieve other Exchange service from server
side automatically.
If your Outlook client for VPN users can't connect to Exchange server in Outlook, please make sure your VPN is configured correctly firstly. Then check whether the internal domain user can connect to Exchange account in Outlook.

  • Today all of our outlook 2010 and 2007 clients are repeatedly getting asked for their password. This problem just appeared today at both of our locations with exchange 2010 server.

Users on the local network can open outlook and it immediately connects and they see their e-mail.  After a minute or two a box will popup asking for their password.    Even if it is entered correctly it keeps asking over and over.  Closing
outlook and re-opening it solves the problem but only for a minute.   Remote users using HTTPS over OWA to connect can't get their outlook clients to connect at all.   This does not have any effect on ios devices just outlook 2010 and older.

I would suggest that some virtual directories configured to use Basic Authentication. EWS, OAB or Autodiscover for instance.
Also check Outlook Anywhere configuration. If it was changed from NTLM to Basic it could cause such credential's prompts.
But if you believe that configuration wasn't changed recently then another possible reason for this behavior could be NTLM bottleneck:

I am using Outlook 2010 and I also use a Iphone 4s. I use Outlook to correct all my contacts and them it sync with my phone BUT I get different variations of the contacts.  Almost as if there is another file it is going to.  Can I check to see which file it is reading from??

  • ICloud , Outlook 2010 and Windows 8 synchronization issues

Everything was working fine under Windows 7.  Outlook 2010 and IPad Contacts and Calendar were syncing perfectly.  Once Windows 8 was installed problems arose.  If I entered or updated a Contact or Calendar item in Outlook 2010 it synced perfectly with iCloud and the IPad.  However, if I entered data for a Contact or Calendar item on the IPad, it found its way to iCloud but did not update the item on Outlook.  I've tried reistalling iCloud software with no success.  Any ideas???

I have exactly the same problem with Windows 7.  The Sent folder has lots in it on icloud and my other devices, but is empty on the Outlook client on my PC.  The sent folder is a "special" foder for iMap and is permenantly selected for syncing.
I switched off the iCloud mail in the control panel and then added it again with now luck.
Did you manage to get it working?

  • Outlook 2010 and Adobe Acrobat 9

I just purchase 3 licences of Adobe Acrobat 9 two days ago, and i notice that i can't create PDF with all methadata, and all attachment on it (like what i was able to do with Adobe Acrobat 9 + Outlook 2007 and 2003).
So my question is : Is there a fix somewhere, or coming that will make this work ?
I purchase these licence for three 60yrs old user that can use the little "Adobe Icon" on Outlook to create PDF, but will be completly lost if i ask to "print" and choose where...
Also, it as been purchase for legal issue : it keep all metha data and all attached document, in their native format.
So my latest question is : do i ask for refund (Adobe will do it, because i purchase that from them) or this will be fixed soon, and i only need to wait ?

Win7, Outlook 2010 and Acrobat Standard 9 are working on one of my laptops. I was helping someone else install who is having an issue with Outlook 2010 crashings.  I was looking for the difference.  On my laptop, I did not have the .dll add-in installed in Outlook, so when I print, I print to the Adobe printer.
I went to the non-working Adobe printer on the other laptop.  I went to change to get a new driver.  When the driver windo popped up, I noticed there were 2 options available.  One of them was a newer date and said that it was for a 64 bit operating system.  I selected that driver and it fixed my issue of not being able to print from Outlook to the Adobe printer.  It will now allow me to print and save the .PDF file during the printing process.
I do not know how Outlook 2010 is supposed to work with the add-in as I have never got that working.  So I do not know the difference.  So if you do have the add-in in Outlook and you are crashing even when it is disabled.  I would first suggest going to the re-install option when you boot from the installation CD and select modify.  Then go in and remove the Outlook add-in.  Then do what I have described above.  It works printing to the Adobe printer.

  • Windows 7 (32bit), Outlook 2010, and Tungsten E2 problem

I have a new machine with Windows 7 (32-bit), Office 2010, and a Tungsten E2.  When I try to HotSync I get a message that says the session completed with errors.  The Date Book, Address Book, To Do List, Memo Pad, and Media all are shown as "synchronized successfully".  The error occurs in the "Backed up some files successfully".  The files that are marked "Failed to backup" are PmTraceDatabase and StatusBarResources. I went online and tried some of the suggestions to correct.
The MAIN problem is that the desktop (I am syncing to MS Outlook 2010) and the Tungsten will not synchronize.  Appointments I enter in Outlook 2010 don't show up on the handheld and vice versa.  This is even though the log says the sync was successful.   I checked the settings on the HotSync Manager and they are correct.
    Thanks for any help,
    Jann
    Post relates to: Tungsten E2

I just experienced the same problem on my Windows 7 64 bit HP computer.  Everything was working great, hotsync worked to get all of my old info from my Z22 to my new E2 through the bluetooth, until yesterday.  I did a hot sync, got the message it was successful, but the data on the handheld did not get onto the desktop, new data from desktop (calendar and contacts) did not get to the device.  Huh?  Don't know how it could be "successful" but not transfer the data.  I was going to get the dbfixit mentioned in other posts, but that program does not seem directed to a problem where the sync is supposedly successful, but really is not because nothing is transferred.  If anyone has any idea how to fix this new glitch, PLEASE HELP!

    Hey keiichi-san,
Yes, It is possible. You can merge contacts, calendars, and bookmarks between multiple computers.
When you sync the contacts and calendars to your iPhone from the new computer you'll see the option to Merge or Replace, just choose Merge.
These articles provide more information on syncing options:

  • Bandwith usage while calendar sync Outlook 2010 and MOSS 2007

    Hi,
we have some remote users which are only connected through a thin shared DSL line. We plan to use calendar sync for Outlook 2010 while the server side is MOSS 2007.
As far as I know the SPS protocol is used.
Can we expect a high network usage (traffic) when using calendar sync with Outlook 2010 and MOSS 2007?
    Thanks

  • Configuring iCloud email with Outlook 2010 and Gmail

    Hello All,
I have created a new iCloud email (@me.com) and I want to know how I can use it NOT only on my iPhone and iPad but also on my outlook 2010 and on my Gmail account.
I use Outlook 2010 in my office and home, I use Gmail when I am on the go. My Gmail is also configured in my Outlook so basically I have all my accounts on Gmail and I just use Outlook's interface.
I want my iCloud to be on it as well. Obviously I want it to be and IMAP type of configuration so I can see all the emails on my iPhone, iPad, Outlook 2010 and Gmail!!!!
Can you please tell me where I can find relevant information on those configuration?
    Thank you,

  • Delayed received emails Using Outlook 2010 and Exchange Server 2010 SP3

    Hi,
Some of our users are encountering delayed emails. When our clients sent email to us, some of our clients received this an hour late, sometimes they will received this the next day.
Our users uses Outlook 2010 and our Exchange Server is 2010. We have already patch this to SP3 as it says that the delayed emails was already fixed in this SP3 but we still encounter the delayed emails.
    Thanks.
    Collins.

    Hi Collins,
In order to narrow down this issue, please use OWA to send and receive a test email, see whether the delay will still happen or not.
From your description, the issue happens when certain users receive emails from internal. I recommend you use message tracking log to determine which step delays.
Here is an article for your reference.

  • OWA receives mail long before Outlook (Exchange 2013 with Outlook 2010 and 2013)

I recently upgraded my Exchange environment to Exchange 2013 SP1. The Outlook users are now experiencing a delay when receiving email. When they do arrive they appear in batches, often 20-45 minutes after they were sent, from a mailbox on the same server.
Additionally, the mail appears instantly when you monitor the inbox using OWA. The users are experiencing this on both Outlook 2010 and 2013 clients configured in both cached and non-cached modes. This appears to be a problem with Outlook connecting to Exchange.
Any suggestion about how to correct this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    Hi,
From your description, when users use OWA, they can receive emails normally. But if they use Outlook 2010 or Outlook 2013, there is a delay in receiving emails.
I recommend you use the Outlook safe mode to determine whether the problem is caused by add-ins. Also, please make sure users have installed the Outlook latest Service Pack.
If the issue persist, please create a new profile and check the result.
    Hope it helps.

I updated my iphone 5 to  ios 7 two days ago and I synced with my computer for the first time yesterday. Most of my calendar appointments and events were wiped off my phone but are still on the computer. I use outlook 2010 and a pc running windows 7. Rebooting the phone and the computer failed to remedy the calendar sync problem.

Easy solution for restoring lost calendar informaiton, thank goodness.  On your iPhone, go to settings, then to iCloud.  If your Calendar selection is turned off,  turn it on.  Your info should restore.  If your Calendar selection is turned on, then turn it off.  Choose to save calendars when asked.  After it shuts the Calendar off, turn it back on.  Your info should be restored.
Thank you to Apple support for walking me through this.  Shame on you Apple for not just telling people about this easy fix rather than making us go through all of this pain and worry.

  • Office 365 email deployment using Outlook 2010 and PRF files

    Hi,
I've been struggling to get Outlook 2010 setup with a new Office 365 deployment. I would like to use custom PRF files to get the new Outlook profiles configured. I have more than 100 users.
One of PRF files I'm using is shown at the end of this message. Each user will get a custom PRF file with his/her information already configured (mailbox, server name, etc...). I've obtained the corresponding Exchange server using:
    Get-Mailbox <email> | select ExchangeGUID
I've attached the domain at the end of the GUID and then that's the Exchange server. It matches what you get with Outlook using Autodiscover.
Using these PRF fies I'm able to create a new default profile and set all the parameters as if I had create the profile manually. Two problems here though:
    1) I don't know what to change in the PRF file to set the Logon Network Security to Anonymous Authentication under the Security tab (Exchange account properties)
    2) When Outlook asks me for the username and password, it won't take it, and I know I'm using the right credentials. If I create the profile manually (not using Autodiscover) and I use the same configuration parameters in the PRF file, everything is ok. I have
already run all the updates and tools that come as part of Setup Desktop in Office 365. Actually I get the same results with Outlook 2013.
I'm looking for some help here or ideas how to roll Office 365 without having to go user by user and creating a new profile and waiting for Autodiscover to finish :)

Wow, even if we were to find out what to add to the PRF, it turns out each user mailbox has it's own unique server name (aka Virtual Connection Point). I cannot believe two departments of Microsoft aren't talking to each other!!!! ..... wait, that always
happens. 1 week later and probably 100 hours later I am just going to create a simple how-to for each user.
Here is the link I just found explaining the "virtual connection points". http://www.blackmanticore.com/2c209fbaa93ae6cf8f8dac5b50281f2e
I'm sure NEXT YEAR Microsoft will catch up with itself and add this option/feature in the Office Customization Tool to create PRF files that will actually work with their services.
