Outlook 2010 connected to Exchange 2013 prior to coexistence

I installed Exchange 2013 into the environment (Exchange 2010 SP3) and left it at that (ie no additional config). I noticed Outlook 2010 client connected to Exchange 2013 somehow (it got a cert warning). Why would Outlook connect to the new
Exchange 2013 server like that? Although I enabled Outlook Anywhere, it is not trying RPC/HTTP first, but rather RPC/TCP.

Hi,
By design, if the user mailbox located in Exchange 2010 server, the Outlook client will connect to Exchange 2010 server automatically.
According to your description, I found that we have nothing additional configuration on Exchange 2013. So, only server name and internal services' URLs are configured automatically during the Exchange 2013 server installation.
If it has no mailbox located in Exchange 2013, it is odd that Outlook client connect Exchange 2013 first.
I suggest running "Test E-mail AutoConfiguration" in Outlook to verify which Exchange server the Outlook connected.
Thanks

• First timeout, push retry and then succesfull connect?! Starting Outlook 2010 connect to Exchange 2013

Hi!
Some info:
2x AD/DC Windows 2003 Native.
Previous Exchange 2003 installed, but now cleanly as it gets uninstalled.
Exchange 2013CU2v2 Aka Version 15.0 (Build 712.24)
Office 2010 with Outlook 2010 (Latest SP, and WU)
Outlook-prf configured for Outlook Anywhere. (i've also tried to configure manually, no difference)
Exchange: SAN Cert. GUI requested from ECP. This one covers all possible host names the server can use. autodiscover, owa, mail, "netbios"-name. Self issued from the internal CA. CA distributed to clients with GPO. I get NO certificate warnings
surfing to OWA, ECP.
Exchange: ECP/Server/Outlook Anywhere; Auth set to NTLM (not Negotiate)
Ping inside host names resolves to the Exchange server.
Starting Outlook.exe with /rpcdiag show two connections for a while. One of the type catalog and one of the type redirect.
Problem:
When starting Outlook you see "Loading profile" for about 30-40 seconds. /rpcdiag show two connections CID "9","11"; SERVERNAME "---","[GUID]@thedomain", AUTH and ENCRYPT is empty.
The the a dialog comes up that says that the server isn't available?!
Clicking "Retry" makes Outlook connect as it should. Everything from there works like a charm! /rpcdiag windows show that it has connection as it should.
Tried to click "Reconnect" in /rpcdiag. It also takes about 30 sec before it regains the conneciton. The part hanging there is the Type: Redirect.
So, does anyone have a clue for why it doesn't work and then does?
Can it be something wrong with the autodiscover?

Hello,
Do you mean the issue occurs when you select manually configure outlook exchange account or automatically configure outlook exchange account? If so, please make sure whether all users have the issue.
I recommend you check if there exists redirection on your rpc virtual directory.
I recommend you use "test e-mail autoconfiguration" tool to check if your autodiscover is correct.
Besides, I recommend you to enable global and advanced logging for outlook to check RPC trace events.

• Outlook 2010 connecting to Exchange 2013 and 2007 ... delivery fails

Hello,
we are having a problem with a few Outlook 2010 Clients that have two Exchange accounts setup in one profile. One account is connecting to the company's Exchange 2013 Server, the second account is connecting to an external provider's Exchange 2007 infrastructure
using Outlook Anywhere.
The companies Exchange 2013 was recently migrated from Exchange 2010 and this is the point where the problem started.
Some users are no longer able to send using the external Exchange 2007 account. When they try they are receiving an NDR with the following error message:
#554 5.6.0 STOREDRV.Deliver; Corrupt message content## from the external provider's servers.
When I setup a profile containing only the external provider's mailbox everything works fine until I am adding the company's Exchange 2013 back in at which point the same error appears.
We have no problems using the company's Exchange 2013 servers.
Does anyone have an idea what causes this and how to resolve it? The external provider is uncooperative in troubleshooting so we are left with the problem.
Thank you
Sascha

Hi,
The problem should be related to the External Exchange 2007.
Please refer to this kb below:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2203381/en-us
This problem occurs when the email message is a multipart/mixed MIME message which contains a text/plain body and an application/applefile body. If the corresponding body is not a real application/applefile body, the Exchange Server 2007 server considers
that the email message is invalid. Therefore, it generates the NDR. However, Exchange Server 2010 can deliver this kind of email message successfully.
To resolve this problem, you should let the External Provider install the following update rollup:
2279665 Description of Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 3
Hope this helps.

• Outlook 2010 disconnects from Exchange 2013

One of the users running Outlook 2010 (14.0.7108.5000) randomly gets disconnected from her mailbox on Exchange 2013. The disconnect lasts about 5 min and then connection reestablishes. While outlook gets disconnected, computer does not have any problems
accessing any other network resources. Event 25 gets logged on the client when outlook disconnects and states the following. "Network problems are preventing connection to Microsoft Exchange."
Other users in the same mailbox database don't experience or notice the same issue.
The error message states that the mailbox database is offline, but it's probably misleading as the database remains online and mounted while the disconnect happens. The problems seems to follow the user no matter what mailbox database she is in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

After reviewing the entire RCP Client log on the server, I am ruling out the client PC at this moment.
The disconnect seems to be getting triggered by a Healthmailbox check that starts right before users gets disconnected.

• Unable to connect to Exchange 2013 using Outlook 2010/2013 with latest patch

Dear All,
I'm setting up Exchange 2013 CU2 coexist with Exchange 2010 SP3. Since we are still planning and testing, the internet is still pointing to 2010 for send/receive mails.
The 2013 environment are:-
2 X CAS server with MS NLB configured
2X MBX server with DA
Internal NLB/licent access: excas2013.int.my.domain
External access (current set on 2010 as well): webmail.my.domain
Certificate with valid subject name has been import to 2013 and 2010:
CN: webmail.mydomain
SAN: excas2013.int.my.domain
SAN: excas.int.my.domain (for 2010)
I am able to connect to my Exchange 2010 user thru 2013 CAS server and proxy to exhcnage 2010 by outlook. However, I cannot connect to Exchange 2013 user by outlook. During mail profile create of Exchange 2013 user by autodiscover (pointed to exchange 2013),
the process looks good:-
Establish network connection (checked)
Searching for [email protected] server settings (checked)
Log on to server
The process stop at "Log on to server" and a windows prompt, saying:
The action cannot be completed. The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action.
Clicked OK, I can see:-
MS Exchange Server:
[email protected]
Mailbox:
=SMPT:[email protected]
WHen I click "Check Name", it said The name cannot be resolved.
I have no idea of what is going on. Just want some help~

I have checked the iis log:-

• Unbale to install November update on Outlook 2007 SP3 for connecting to Exchange 2013

Hi
I was trying to upgrade my outlook 2007 clients for connecting to Exchange 2013 environment. First I have installed Office SP3 (kb2526086). Outlook version after that is 12.0.6607.1000. Later I tried to install nNovember 2012 update which is a
prerequisite for connecting to Exchange 2013 clients (support.microsoft.com/kb/2687404/en-us) but it shows me a message "Expected version of the product was not found on the system". No idea how to proceed now, expecting help.

I recommend that you post this in the Outlook Forum: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/outlook/threads

• OUtlook 2013 can not connect to exchange 2013 after exchange maibox member of DAG failed.

hi ALL
OUtlook 2013 can not connect to exchange 2013 after exchange maibox member of DAG failed.
Exchange environment contains 2 Exchange Mailboxesserver ,( one Failed , virtual Machine)
2 cas Servers
first databases could not be mounted but after we run the below command , users can use OWA but outlook could not connect
Start-DatabaseAvailabilityGroup -Identity DAG -MailboxServer MBX1
please support
thanks

Hi,
According to your description, I understand that Outlook client cannot connect to Exchange server 2013 while one member of DAG failed.
If I have misunderstand your concern, please do not hesitate to let me know.
I want to double confirm whether all account store in MBX1 experience this issue, users in MBX2 works fine.
Please run following command to double check the database status:
Get-MailboxDatabase –Status | select Name,Mounted,MountedOnServer
If it works in OWA, the issue may be related to Outlook side. Please run “Test E-mail AutoConfiguration” and “Outlook Connection Status” to get more details, expecial the setting of proxy server, it’s more helpful
for further troubleshooting.
Additional, please try to recreate a profile for testing. Besides, please move active DB back to MBX1.

• Exchange 2010 coexist with exchange 2013

Hi All ,
Planning to have a coexistence scenario in my environment which is mentioned below
Exchange 2010 - ambiguous url in place - OA enabled
For mapi/rpc traffic - mail.domain.in - exchange 2010
For https traffic - mail.domain.in - exchange 2010
mail.domain.in will get resolved in to cas array in exchange 2010 .
After coexistence On our side we are not going to move the mail.domain.in namespace to exchange 2013 , Instead of that we are going to use a new namespace in exchange 2013 for internal outlook anywhere and it will be outlookmail.domain.in and for the remaining
exchange 2013 services like pop, imap, owa, active sync url's,external OA will be having mail.domain.in as same as exchange 2010 namespace.
just consider outlookmail.domain.in is available on the san certificate installed in exchange 2013.
Note :
On my ide I would assume Internal outlook 2010 mapi users will connect directly to exchange 2010 servers on the namespace mail.domain.in
Likewise i would assume Internal outlook anywhere 2013 users will connect directly to exchange 2013 servers on the namespace outlookmail.domain.in
Services like pop, imap, owa, active sync ,external OA connections for both exchange 2010 and exchange 2013 from the external world will be routed from firewall to exchange 2013 servers .Then https traffic for exchange 2010 mailbox users will be proxied to 2010
exchange server via exchange 2013 server.
question : I would like to know above mentioned scenario is possible or not ?
On my side I know in my environment i am having ambiguous url's in place and at the same time i don't want the exchange 2010 internal outlook users to connect via exchange 2013 rpc over http even though OA is enabled on exchange 2010.
So simply i can say i need my internal exchange 2010 mailbox users has to connect via tcp/ip.
All of you tell me your valuable suggestions.
Regards
S.Nithyanandham

Hi,
Going Straight to the point... and answering your question...
The scenario above IS possible For a while... But going ahead in the migration process, You'd face problems once the Exch2013 doesn't know how to handle MAPI connections:
As per Exchange Team...
In this scenario where both the MAPI/RPC and HTTP workloads are using the same FQDN you cannot successfully move the FQDN to CAS 2013 without
breaking your MAPI/RPC client connectivity entirely. I repeat, your MAPI/RPC clients will start failing to connect via MAPI/RPC once
their DNS cache expires after the shared FQDN is moved to CAS 2013.
As their recommendation, and I would tell you too by experience, the best option is to really use different internal and external URLs for the clients to connect to.
change your design to use a specific internal-only FQDN for MAPI/RPC clients. If you are in the middle of a 2010 deployment using an Ambiguous
URL I recommend you change your ClientAccessArray FQDN to a unique name and update the mailbox database RpcClientAccessServer values
on all Exchange 2010 mailbox databases accordingly. Fixing this item mid-migration to Exchange 2010 or even in your fully migrated environment will ensure any newly created or manually repaired Outlook profiles are protected, but it will not automatically
fix existing Outlook clients with the old value in the server field.
So the overall for this first point is to enable the OA for all internal users, so as to ease the migration process in the future, even if for the time being its not necessary.
Also another point you should take into consideration is the version of yours OLK versions, as the minimum supported are as per below:
Outlook 2007: 12.0.6665.5000 (SP3 + the November 2012 Public Update or any later PU)
Outlook 2010: 14.0.6126.5000 (SP1 + the November 2012 Public Update or any later PU)
Outlook 2013: 15.0.4420.1017 (RTM or later)
I don't know the size of you network, but it might be necessary for you to use an inventory tool in order to identify that.
As advised, its really worthy to have a look at the following article, thus to clarify your view about this issue.
Ambiguous URLs and their effect on Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 Migrations

Are you sure that you don't see something like this: [email protected]
That is what you should see when connecting to Exchange 2013.
Outlook clients no longer connect to a server FQDN as they have done in all previous versions of Exchange. Outlook uses Autodiscover to create a new connection point comprised of
mailbox GUID, @ symbol, and the domain portion of the user’s primary SMTP address.

Hi,
Please temporary remove all the OAB objects then try re-install the CAS server again.
After installing CAS server, we can re-build the OAB on Exchange 2013.
More details in the following articles:

I have existing Exchange Server 2010 Hybrid Deployment - Do you have Exchange 2010 and Office 365 in a
hybrid setup now ?
Are you trying to upgrade your on premise Exchange 2010 servers to Exchange 2013 ?
Or Are you trying to migrate your on premise Exchange 2010 to a different forest to Exchange 2013 ?
You can try the below suggestions-

• Internal outlook client connectivity in exchange 2010 when coexist with exchange 2013

Hi all ,
on my side i would like to clarify few queries.
Say for instance i am coexisting exchange 2010 with exchange 2013 .Unfortunately if all of my exchange 2013 servers goes down .
Q1 .On that time will the internal outlook users having their mailboxes on exchange 2010 can be able to connect mailboxes without any issues ? In case if they face any issues what kind of issues will they be? Because why i am asking is we should have pointed
the autodiscover service to exchange 2013 during coexistence.
When an user closes and reopens the outlook after whole exchange 2013 environment failure ,outlook will first query the autodiscover service for the profile changes to get it updated on users outlook profile. In such case autodiscover service will not be
reachable and i wanted to know will that affects the internal client connectivity for outlook users having their mailboxes on exchange 2010.
Q2. Apart from outlook internal users connectivity ,what kind of exchange services(i.e owa, active sync, pop, external OA and imap) will get affected when whole exchange 2013 environment goes down during coexistence ?
I have read the below mentioned statement on this awesome blog but still i wanted to clarify with you all on my scenario.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/03/12/client-connectivity-in-an-exchange-2013-coexistence-environment.aspx
Internal Outlook Connectivity
For internal Outlook clients using RPC/TCP connectivity whose mailboxes exist on Exchange 2010, they will still connect to the Exchange 2010 RPC Client Access array endpoint.
For internal Outlook clients using RPC/TCP connectivity whose mailboxes exist on Exchange 2007, they will still connect directly to the Exchange 2007 Mailbox server instance hosting the mailbox.
Please share me your suggestions and that would help me a lot .
Regards
S.Nithyanandham

Hi Winnie Liang ,
Thanks a lot for your reply.
Scenario 1 : for internal outlook connectivity
We have below settings for exchange 2010 autodiscover.
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for internal autodiscover URI for all the exchange 2010 cas serves
We are going to have below settings for exchange 2013 autodiscover.
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for internal autodiscover URI for all the exchange 2013 cas serves
During coexistence mail.domain.com will be pointed to exchange 2013 cas servers . I mean to say if we try to resolve the mail.domain.com it will get resolved in to the exchange 2013 cas servers.
So on such case if anything happened wrong to the new environment or else if entire environment goes down .Do we face any issues while outlook users connect to existing mailboxes in exchange 2010 ?
Because why i am asking is ,on the below mentioned article i have read all the autodiscover request will go via exchange 2013 cas servers during coexistence. That means all the existing mailboxes in exchange 2010 will also have to query exchange 2013 cas
servers for autodiscover request.During the whole exchange 2013 environemnt failure whenever the user tries to close and open outlook .Outlook will first queries the autodiscover service for any changes happened on that particular mailbox and it will try to
get it updated on user profile.
http://blogs.technet.com/b/exchange/archive/2014/03/12/client-connectivity-in-an-exchange-2013-coexistence-environment.aspx
Would it be possible to make the exchange 2010 mailbox users to query only the scp points which belongs to the exchange 2010 cas servers for autodiscover request ?
Scenario 2: For exchange services
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for all the exchange 2010 services (i.e owa, activesync, external outlook anywhere, pop, imap)
mail.domain.com - will be the namespace for all the exchange 2013 services (i.e owa, activesync, external outlook anywhere, pop, imap)
What about the above services will it get affected during whole exchange 2013 environment failure ?
Note : We are not facing this issue , i hope everything goes well in my environment while doing coexistence i am just asking this question on my own interest?
Regards
S.Nithyanandham

• Outlook 2010 prompt for credential when connecting to Exchange 2013 mailbox

I have 4 server Exchange 2010 with DAG and one server Exchange 2013, i've migrated some mailbox to the new 2013 server.
I'm having a problem with some Outlook 2010 that sometimes (not always) requires credential to connect to mailbox in a server Exchange 2013, but only
when Cache mode is enabled.
The client ask for credential and dont connect to mailbox until I change in online mode.
In Online Mode, everything works fine.
I don't have Public Folders, so the check box Download Public Folder is not selected and the authentication mode is "Negotiate".
Thanks in advance.
Elisa

Hi,
As far as I know, by default, shared mail folders not public folders are downloaded in Cached mode in Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982697/en-us
Please check if there is shared folder in the problematic Outlook 2010 client and try to check if the issue still exists with the same account on other Outlook client.
