Outlook Express mail vanishes

My email is supplied through Outlook Express. All was fine this morning. I opened up to check my email later on and found a totally blank page except for the default categories found on a new computer. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone have any idea what happened to my mail page? More important, can I retrieve it, or is it gone forever?

Hi, maryliz -
There are a couple of things that could explain that, and from which recovery is relatively easy to do.
The first is that somehow a second account (identity) got created, and Outlook Express has entered that one. Check in OE's menus (I don't recall which one it is) for an item Identities... - select it and see if there is more than one choice. If there is more than one, check the others to see if your email reappears,
The second is a bit more complicated.
Older versions of OE kept the email archives files in a folder named Main Identity in a folder named Identities in the program's folder. Newer versions of OE keep those files in a similar folder located here - (hard drive) >> Documents >> Microsoft User Data >> Identities >> Main Identity.
If your current version of OE is one that had been updated from an older version, OE may have kept using the Main Identity folder in the program folder; and then, for reasons unknown, decided to create and use one in the Documents folder.
Check to see if there is a Main Identity folder at both locations; and, if so, whether the one in Documents is about 144K in size, and the one in the program's folder much larger. If so, copy the entire contents of the Main Identity folder in the program folder to the one in the Documents folder - you will need to okay the replacement of same-name files.
Do the preceding with OE not running. If it works, you should be able to access your old mail as soon as the copying is finished and you run OE.

One thing in there jumps out - the long time taken to connect to the internet after NetProtect was installed. McAfee is a notorious resource hog and that behaviour is typical of the symptoms which persuaded me and others to look for another AV. Microsoft Security Essentials has a light touch and many would recommend it, though there are several other effective, free AVs available. If you do uninstall NetProtect you should make sure to run the McAfee Removal Tool also.
I would advise you to get NetProtect out of the way and return with an update for advice on the email issues.

  • Downloads to Outlook Express mail from Google now (since Mozilla update) incomplete. ¿A Mozilla problem?

For years, download to Outlook Express of mail in three Gmail accounts worked fine.
New problem, not all of the mail at Google gets to Outlook, and what's missing disappears.
This problem appeared after recent Firefox update. Is this a possible cause?
I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium

It an Outlook Express thing Firefox has nothing to do with it. But after saying that, if you view your mail with a browser and then open Outlook Express, it will not see it as new mail and leave it on the server.
Also OE is really limited you should use Thunderbird mail

    or something else.

  • Outlook Express mail to Mac Mail

I hope this is the right forum for this post, I don't see one that looks more appropriate .....
I have a brand new iMac. I have an older XP PC with a lot of email in Outlook Express (not Outlook). I want to move it.
I've googled how to migrate the mail, there are lots of responses about using 3rd party utilities, etc.
My question is, is there an Apple "endorsed" method? What's the best method? I'm not keen on installing random applications from other countries to convert all of my mail, etc.
    Any tips/advice would be appreciated!

If you are accessing your Comcast POP account with Outlook Express on your Windows PC, create your .Mac account as an IMAP account with OE.
Create a .Mac server stored mailbox for Comcast received messages and another for Comcast sent messages.
Copy the messages from the Comast Inbox and Sent mailbox to the designated server stored .Mac mailboxes.
After doing so, when launching the Mail.app on your Mac, these server stored mailboxes created with OE on your Windows PC and the transferred messages will be available.
Create two "On My Mac" location mailboxes - one for the transferred Inbox messages and one for the transferred sent messages. Transfer the messages from the server stored mailboxes to these "On My Mac" location mailboxes. This process will store the messages locally on the hard drive and remove the messages from the server at the same time.

  • Lost outlook express mail boxes and failed transfe...

I have just joined BT from orange (I had a wanadoo email address).  I've lost the previous contents of OE mail boxes. Any ideas how I might recover. Also followed the instructions for transferring contacts and got message 'cannot read file' or words to that effect. Help please?

    1. If you are lucky your old OE files may still be in the recycle bin on your C: drive so look there first.
I suspect you used the BT disk or similar to setup access to BT and it may have screwed up your existing settings.
If they are there I can tell you how to restore them.
If they are not there look at
    c:\documents and settings \{your username on PC}\local settings\Application Data\Identities\{ an identifier}\Microsoft\Outlook Express
where the bits in {} are unique to your machine.
You should find a file for each of your email folders.
Let us know how big the Inbox.dbx file is and any other Inbox.xxx file.
    2. Waste of time.
    3. I strongly recommend that you use Outlook Express to get your emails from BTYahoo. If you want help here let me know. Note that you can still use OE to get emails from your old provider.

  • How do I import Outlook Express message files into Outlook 2013 without using LiveMail

I bought a new Windows 7 computer and have copied the Outlook Express .dbx files from the old XP computer onto the new one. Outlook 2013 's import facility does not have a .dbx option.  I  do not want to use Windows Live for anything. How do
I import my Outlook Express mail files into Outlook 2013 ?

    Hi,
It isn't only to Outlook 2013, other versions of Outlook cannot access the .dbx files directly.
In the situation, Windows Live Mail is needed to transfer the mail data to Outlook.

  • Reading 'pdf' attachments to Outlook Express Email

I can't read 'pdf' attachments to my Outlook Express mail. I get an Error Message "This message does not have a program associated with it"
However, I can save the message to my computer 'My Documents' and it then opens fine with Adobe Reader. Adobe Reader is associated with 'pdf' files in Control Panel - Folder Options.
    Computer: Compact Presario
    System: Windows XP
    Outlook Espress 6
    Adobe Reader 8
    Thanks,
    Darleen

all versions of MS operating system handle this sort of differently but here is the general approach
    (windows 7):
control panel -> associate file type or protocol with a specific program -> scroll down to PDF
if you have successfully installed ADOBE, you should see that as a choice, click on it and your system will update so now in OUTLOOK all PDF files will be opened by ADOBE, simple but not very straight forward.

  • How to drag and drop an email from Outlook Express (with example code)

    Hi,
It is possible to drag a mail from Outlook Express and drop it on the desktop, and the file created is a .eml, which is a text file.
If I drop it into a Java application, no DataFlavor is provided to make the data transfer possible.
As the data to transfer is a text, it should be possible to drop it.
How to make a DataFlavor available and recover the text as a stream of characters?
    Example code
The small application below shows the MIME type of the data that is about to be dropped. If you drag an icon from the desktop, a type will be displayed; if you drag an Outlook Express mail, no type will be displayed.

It might just be Microsoft not using standards? I remember having a similar situation - I had an application that could have a zip entry fron 7-zip drag-and-dropped into it (came over as plain text, or maybe an InputStream, can't remember), but when you drill into a zip file with Windows (Vista at least), and try to drag-and-drop a zip entry from Windows Explorer, Java shows no dataflavors available. I just assumed Microsoft wasn't exporting the zip entry in any standard format (such as plain text).
Sorry, I know that wasn't very helpful, just thought I'd share a similar experience. :)

  • From Tiger to Leopard: outlook express "lost"

I just upgraded from Tiger to Leopard. When I click on Outlook Express Mail, it won't work.
Are all my thousands of old emails lost forever?
    Thanks.

    Welcome to *Apple Discussions*!
Outlook Express Mail is not a Mac application. Therefore:
    a. You were using Outlook Web Access (OWA) through the web, in which case the alias is broken
    b. You had an alias to a virtual application running within Windows. You may need to check your application such as Parallales, Microsoft Virtual PC, or VMWare Fusion

  • Router & Outlook Express Issues - help!

I'm losing my mind and pulling out my hair. I have a Dell desktop and recently purchased a Linksys WRT54G (version 5) router and a brand-spanking new Dell wireless notebook (Inspiron E1505).
After installing the router on my desktop - we noticed some server issues with our email system (Outlook Express). I'm not having connectivitity issues as we can connect to Internet Explorer fine. BUT, when I go to Send/Receive in Outlook express to send/receive emails it is 'acting quirky'. This is on both desktop and notebook computers but more on the new notebook. It inconsistently pulls mail. Sometimes it works great and sometimes it has a server time out and just hangs on. Mostly getting that 'PoP3 servers is not responding. Would you like to wait for 60 seconds'. If I shut down Outlook and retry, sometimes it pulls/sends mail - sometimes not. I've been on the phone with my DSL provider (Alltel, now Windstream) and Linksys. Additionally the modem we're using is speedstream.
Suppposedly there is a conflict with the version 5 model of Linksys routers and Outlook Express. I heard this through my DSL provider - Linksys didn't really own up to this 'conflict'. I've done tons of troubleshooting with Linksys tech (opened Outlook Express ports, updated firmware, adjusted MTU...) Nothing working. Email will work 'ok' for an hour but then back to quirkyness...not pulling email great. Not 'connecting to server great'. When I click SEND in Outlook it just keeps saying 'connecting to pop.windstream.net and then a pop up window saying "Your POP3 server has not responded in 60 seconds....would you like to stop/wait'.
I'm considering returning my router and getting another brand but don't want to jump the gun until I'm 120% sure that it's a conflict with the new Linksys router and Outlook Express and I cannot do anything to fix it. My next door neighbor is in the SAME boat. Same router, same DSL provider, new wireless notebook -same Outlook Express mail issues. Thank you for any thoughts you might have - again, I've done extensive trouble shooting with my DSL provider and Linksys - to no avail. .....

[email protected] - this is email on my notebook
[email protected] - this is email on my desktop

This worked for myself...(Thanks Isy B)
    * Go back to the router's 'Setup' page (192.168.1.1). and to the 'Advanced' tab
    * Click on the 'Forwarding' tab
    * Under the 'Customized Application' type: Outlook 3 times.
    * Then on 'Ext. Port', type: 25 to 25, 110 to 110 and 113 to 113.
    * Put a check in 'Protocol TCP' and one in 'Enable' at the end
    * Click Apply button at the bottom of page
Now in Outlook Express (may be different if using outlook)
    * Tools and then Accounts - a window will open, make sure you are on the mail tab
    * Highlight mail account and hit Properties
    * Goto the Advance tab
    * Verify Outgoing mail (SMTP) = 25 &Incoming mail (POP3) = 110
    * Make sure nothing else is checked
    * Hit o.k.
This worked for myself, hope it's helpful for some others as well...

  • Switching from Windows XP to Tiger (Outlook Express problems)

    http://www.apple.com/getamac/files.html
That page claims that moving emails would be easy: "Email? You can transfer all your years’ worth of Microsoft Outlook email messages over to your Mac with just a few steps.".
However, I doesn't tell you how actually do to it. I found that the only method to move emails from Outlook Express (which is what most people use) to a Mac to by dragging and dropping them into a folder and then copy the folder to the Mac. Don't know how to import the messages into Apple Mail.
Outlook Express cannot export otherwise except to Outlook and Exchange (but it won't mention where it put the exported mails for some reason).
Outlook Exporess' address book can be exported into a comma-delimited text file but Apple Address Book claims the file is not a comma-delimited text file after all (I looked at it, it is).
What's the easy method to move Outlook Express mails and address book to Mac OS X?

Since you have access to a .Mac trial account (good for 60 days) with your new Mac, a .Mac type account is really an IMAP account and behaves in the same way.
A .Mac type account is the default selection when creating an account with Mail but you can create/access a .Mac account as an IMAP or POP account with Mail and as an IMAP or POP account with another email client on your Mac or with another email client such as OE on your Windows PC.
What the link briefly refers to is creating/accessing your .Mac account as an IMAP account with Outlook or you can do the same with OE.
You can transfer messages from your existing account's Inbox and Sent mailboxes to your .Mac account's Inbox and Sent mailboxes which are stored on the server by default.
When launching Mail on your Mac, your .Mac account's Inbox and Sent mailbox will be synchronized with the server and these transferred messages will be available.
Create a new mailbox or mailboxes - one for the account's Inbox mailbox and one for the account's Sent mailbox. At the menu bar go to Mailbox and select New Mailbox. Select "On My Mac" for the mailbox location (which is stored locally on the hard drive), enter a name for the mailbox and select OK.
Transfer the messages from the account's Inbox and Sent mailboxes to the appropriate user created "On My Mac" location mailboxes. This process stores the transferred messages locally on the hard drive and removes the messages from the server at the same time.
Does OE support exporting address book contacts in vCard format and if not, how about forwarding selected contacts or all contacts as a separate vCard file for each attached to a message as does Outlook?
If no to both and the Address Book does not recognize the exported file as being comma-delimited, try using Address Book Importer.

  • How can I sync Outlook Express email with Nokia 58...

    Hello -
I'd like to know if/how I can sync my works outlook express emails with my nokia 5800?  Not via a web browser but setting up the sync in the messages area.  All the sites/manuals I've searched are too vague and don't seem to offer any explanations on what I need to do specifically for outlook.
    Can anyone help?
    Many Thanks

In general you don't sync with a mail client's local message store (such as the Outlook Express message store on your Work PC).  You generally sync to a mail server.
So what you can do is find out which server your Outlook Express mail client is configured for on your PC, and then use the same server settings on your Nokia Phone.
For further questions, you may want search in, and post to the Mail, Messaging & Browsing discussion forum.

I can't provide a solution with or without the error message, but without an error message, you are making everyone guess at what you see. I have no idea what you see, and I think someone who might be able to help you solve your problem would need to know what that message says. Is "Outlook Express" (Windows Live Mail) your default email processor, if not what is?
