Outlook Express message database

Hi all,
After moving my Utilities folder (which contains the OE database) to an external hard disk, and then moving it back again (had to free up some space temporarily), Outlook Express starts as if for the first time: no preferences set, and what's worse, no messages in the Inbox and Sent Item folders.
The messages, all 1 GB of them, are still in Utilities: Documents: Microsoft User Data: Identities. I just can't get Outlook E to find them.
I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions or shared experiences. If I've lost my e-mail archives I'm up the creek...
Tomas
Pismo   Mac OS 9.1.x

Hi, Tomas -
Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
Outlook Express expects its database files to be in one of two places.
In cases where an older version of OE was updated to 5.x, they may be in an Identities folder in the Outlook Express application folder (where the older versions kept them).
Otherwise, OE expects them to be here - (hard drive) >> Documents >> Microsoft User Data >> Identities. In the Identities folder should be at least one folder, Main Identity - that's the default account (identity). If additional accounts have been made, there will be additional folders in the Identities folder, one for each account.
OS 9 does not like having the Documents folder inside any other folder, and will usually create a new Documents folder if an existing one has been moved elsewhere.
If OS 9 has created a new Documents folder, move the Microsoft User Data folder into it. Any folder by the same name in the new Documents folder should not contain any old info, so replacing it should not cause any problems.
If OS 9 did not create a new Documents folder, try moving the old one out of the Utilities folder, so that the Documents folder is at the root level of the drive (same level as the System Folder and the Applications (Mac OS 9) folder). Then restart, and try OE again.
You may need to rebuild the desktop - not a bad thing to do when a lot of files have been moved around, or after installing a bunch of stuff.
Note - although OS 9 and many of its programs (MS apps, AppleWorks, etc.) use the Documents folder for some of their support files, you do not need to use that folder for the documents you create.

  • How do I import Outlook Express message files into Outlook 2013 without using LiveMail

I bought a new Windows 7 computer and have copied the Outlook Express .dbx files from the old XP computer onto the new one. Outlook 2013 's import facility does not have a .dbx option.  I  do not want to use Windows Live for anything. How do
I import my Outlook Express mail files into Outlook 2013 ?

    Hi,
It isn't only to Outlook 2013, other versions of Outlook cannot access the .dbx files directly.
In the situation, Windows Live Mail is needed to transfer the mail data to Outlook.

  • How To Archive Outlook Express Messages (Mac OS 9.1)?

I've searched the net and have not found an answer to this question, so I'm asking here.
I'm getting "Disk Full" error messages with OE 5.06 (the messages file is 1.98 GB). I need to keep my old messages and be able to find old mail using the OE search function (search by title or body).
    How can I do this?
I've searched the net for archiving software. One says it will save the mail as text files. I can't search the mail if it's in text files with anything that I know of.
The only other thing I can think of is to move the OE files to an external drive and run OE from there when I need to read the older mail. If I do that, will the OE on the external drive mess up the OE files on the computer?
    Thanks.

    Hi, Richard -
The file may have grown too large for OE to access. Try doing two things -
    • Increase the Preferred memory allocation for OE; adding 20 or 30 thusand, or even more if there is enough RAM to support that, is not excessive.
Article #18278 - Assigning More Memory to an Application
    • Compact the database (archive) files OE uses. To do that, with OE not running hold down the Option key and start up OE. A message window should open, asking if you want to compact the database files - click okay and follow the prompts.
Note - the email archive file for OE can be reduced in size a lot if the attachments to messages are removed. Usually, once the attachment is extracted to the desktop there is no longer any need to have it remain as part of the email; and attachments add a lot to the size of the archive file. Unfortunately, the archive file will not auto-reduce in size when emails, or their attachments, are removed. Once you've removed attachments, compact the database files again to reduce the file size.
The only other thing I can think of is to move the OE files to an external drive and run OE from there when I need to read the older mail.
If you would rather do something like that, it would be better to create a new identity (account) to handle new email traffic, keeping the old (original) email account just for access to the old messages.
Since OE keeps its database files in the Documents folder (Documents >> Microsoft User Data >> Identities >> Main Identity and other Identitiy folders) on the boot drive, placing a copy of OE on another drive won't do what you want as long as you continue to boot to the same drive.

  • How I copied all my Outlook Express data to my new Black MacBook

    Hi there!
I just made the jump to the "Apple side" buying a shiny new Black Macbook, and having already got a lot of usefull information from this forum, I just wanted to give my little contribution...
Here follows how I managed to copy ALL my Microsoft Outlook Express messages, settings and accounts from my "old" PC to my new MacBook:
I just installed Mozilla Thunderbird on my PC and let the automated "import" function transfer all my data from Outlook Express; then I installed Thunderbird to the MacBook too (skipping all the setup procedures that start at the first run of the program).
Then, on the "PC side", I located the folder where all the Thunderbird profile data is stored: it is something like "xxxxxxxx.default" (in my case "voakmfhs.default") and is stored in "C:\Documents and Settings\Windows_User\Application Data\Thunderbird\Profiles"
So it was just a matter of copying all the "xxxxxxxx.default" folder from the PC to the Mac (on the "Mac side" just search for the "Thunderbird" folder and then open the "Profiles" subfolder where you have to copy all the stuff)
The last step is to edit the Thunderbird "profiles.ini" file on the Mac, replacing the name of default folder that was assigned during the installation (which you can safely delete), with the name of the one copied from the PC...
For any further question, feel free to ask
Hope this is of some help!
    Ciao for now
    Sergio

  • How to convert Outlook Express6 messages to Outlook 2007

I down loaded the .dbx file form the laptop (XP)with OE6 to a file and installed that file on the Win7 desktop with Outlook 07. I have not been able to import the messages to Outlook 07. I did ask this a week ago and got a responce from Hal but it's not
in "My Threads". Thanks for any help.

    Hi,
I have met this issue before and I solved it by this method.
I downloaded DBXconv and saved it into a directory with a copy of my Outlook Express mailbox files. I ran the following command to extract the messages into .eml format.
    dbxconv -eml *.dbx
The utility quickly created a folder for each of my .dbx files and created an .eml file for each of my messages. I was then able to import the files into Outlook 2007 by:
    1) Dragging the .eml files into Windows Mail
    2) Exporting the messages from Windows Mail
    3) In Outlook 2007, Selecting File – Import and Export – Import Internet Mail and Addresses
    4) Select Outlook Express 4.x, 5.x, 6.x or Windows Mail
    5) Check the Import Mail and Import Address book boxes and press
    Next
    6) In the Import Addresses window you can set how you want duplicates to be handled – Select the option and click
    Finish
In addition, I find this KB article on Microsoft.com, it also introduces how to import Outlook Express messages into outlook 2007.

  • PSE 4.0 - PhotoMail - Outlook Express error

I am using PSE 4.0 with Windows XP. I have been using Photomail for quite a while and it has been working great. But recently after I get the pictures ready to send using Photomail in Organizer, it opens Outlook Express with only the reply buttons available, no send. It hasn't already sent either. I can forward which is what I have been doing. I'm sure that somewhere there is an option so that the send button comes up.
    Any suggestions?

    Byron,
I went to that Knowledgebase article, and it certainly is appropriate. I went to my Microsoft history update, and don't seem to have that update - KB911567 installed. It says it is for Windows XP Sp1 - I have SP2. I can't really use their options - in the article easily. But will try to find that KB911567 because that evidently is the cause. Or I will just forward the message after the Outlook Express message comes up.
    Thanks for your input.

  • Migrating from Outlook Express (PC) to Entourage (Mac)

    Hi,
I have recently joined thE APPLE Mac community with my first mac purchase. I am having a frustrating time doing migration(Exporting) of Outlook Express messages and contacts to my Mac's MsOffice Entourage 2008.
Is there any easy and simple method I can do for the exporting and importing?
Has anyone do something like what I wanted?Care to share your method?
Before installing Entourage, I was trying out Leopard's Address Book and Mac's very own Mail.
But these 2 seems to be so difficult to use especially in adding of contacts, importing, etc.
Entourage proved to be a tough nut to crack too for immigrant of PC's outlook express to Mac's entourage too....
    any advice for me?
Has been trying for 2 weeks and I am still unable to do a full migration to Mac yet...

    Hi,
You won't be able to use outlook express on the mac as it doesn' exist, unless you install parallel or vmware on your mac. I have however successfully transferred my sisters outlook express email using a combination of eudora and free eudora import tool for mac.
Go to this site, it has everything you need to do it successfully. Follow the instructions exactly and it will work perfectly

  • How can I sync Outlook Express email with Nokia 58...

    Hello -
I'd like to know if/how I can sync my works outlook express emails with my nokia 5800?  Not via a web browser but setting up the sync in the messages area.  All the sites/manuals I've searched are too vague and don't seem to offer any explanations on what I need to do specifically for outlook.
    Can anyone help?
    Many Thanks

In general you don't sync with a mail client's local message store (such as the Outlook Express message store on your Work PC).  You generally sync to a mail server.
So what you can do is find out which server your Outlook Express mail client is configured for on your PC, and then use the same server settings on your Nokia Phone.
For further questions, you may want search in, and post to the Mail, Messaging & Browsing discussion forum.

  • Transfer outlook express email to outlook

Hello, I have just become a new Mac user and would like to transfer my email from Outlook express on my old PC to Outlook on my new Mac. What is the best way to do this?

The best way is to use Windows Migration Assistant on the PC > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4796?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US It will transfer your Outlook Express messages and accounts to your Mac.
Note that if you have already set up your computer, Migration Assistant will create a new user with the data. To access to this user, go to  > Log Out, and log in the new account. OS X will ask you what account you want to use every time you start up the iMac

  • HUGE Outlook Express database problems!

I had a hard drive failure. The problem is that my Outlook Express Identities folder was stored there. I recovered the Identities folder using Data Rescue and I discovered that the file called "database" is truncated.
I can do a rebuild of the database but then all several thousand emails are missing. After some trial and error, I confirmed that it is the database file that is screwed.
I can use a backup file from 10 months ago but then the last 10 months of emails are missing.
    Database - 70 MB
    Database Cache - 20 KB
    Messages - 750 MB
I think everything I want is in the larger Messages file even though I also see messages inside the Database file. (I'll never understand the MS programming philosophy)
Are there any Mac utilities that will extract the emails from these database files?
What about my damaged database file? Since it's truncated, is there anything I can splice to the end of it to fool Outlook Express into properly rebuilding it?
Can these be transferred to a PC and then repaired using one of the dozens of Winbloze utilities available for database repair and then converted back?? If so, how?
I'm stumped and I'm hoping anyone here can help.
    Thank-you.

I never had a problem with OE, but it uses the same
MS programming philosophy as entourage, where I do
know you can't get out of a truncated databse…
Sorry, and if the automatic Rebuild routines won't
    fix it, it's just gone.
    Not quite...
I was able to recover about 99.9999% of the 28,000 "lost" emails using a neat little utility called "Emailchemy".
It scours nearly any email database file in almost any condition, pulls out the messages, and then saves them ALL to a generic mbox file that ANY email program can read. It also preserves the attachments!
FYI- For Outlook Express in OS 9, the file called "Database" contains all the outgoing emails and attachments. The file called "Messages" contains all the incoming emails and attachments.
I just ran Emailchemy on both of them and imported two mbox file into Entourage for OS X. That created two folders, each containing all the messages PLUS attachments from each of the two files.
In Entourage for OS X, ALL incoming and outgoing emails plus attachments are stored in the file called "Database". For this program, there's no such thing as "Messages" file.
So anyone reading this, DO NOT delete your corrupted Microsoft email database files, lock them, back them up, and do NOT give up hope. Even if you couldn't extract the information, you can still open the file in a text editor and see your messages inside (minus the attachments, of course). As horrific as this process may sound, at least you can search for something specific if needed.

You mean you want the fade-out message to appear on the JSP page itself ( that as you know is translated into HTML ) ???
I don't think this is possible unless you use some sort of JavaScript.
Please correct me if i misunderstood the situation.

  • Sync error message about mail client - using Outlook Express, wants Outlook

I keep getting a message that "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Outlook and set it as the default mail client"
Outlook Express IS set as my default mail client, both on my computer and on the iTunes screen.
I use Calendar on the iPhone, but do not have sync requested on iTunes for this function.
I do have Outlook on my computer, but do not use it (don't need calendar function at home, but do like to have it on my iPhone since I carry it with me)

I'm having a similar problem. "Either there is no default mail client or the current mail client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft Office Outlook and set it as the default mail client." (iTunes 7.6.1.9)
I sync my contacts with Yahoo! (not Outlook).
I was syncing my calendar with Outlook. This was working just fine, but when I started to get the error above, I have tried turning off the calendar sync. No help there.
I am not syncing any email accounts via iTunes.
Anyone have any suggestions? Given that I'm not syncing with Outlook I don't understand the error. Thunderbird is my default mail client and I shouldn't have to change the system defaults to work around this bug.

I tried to follow the website instructions of

    What do you suggest?
