Outlook permissions fail to open PST after home folders migration on server

Yesterday I spent the day consolidating files on our server.Users my Doc folders are redirected to the server.I moved the central file share \\server\User Home Folders$ from the soon to be decommissioned G: volume to the New central storage D:I used emcopy64 for this to retain all file permissions and owner etc. This is the command I used:G:\emcopy64 "g:\User Home Folders" "d:\User Home Folders" /o /s /secforce /c /r
:3 /sdd /w:5 /log:"d:\emclog/txt"Then I stopped sharing on g:\User Home Folders and enabled sharing on d:\User Home Folders with the same name and permissions. I checked and all attributes, ownership, time stamps and NTFS permissions followed nicely, it felt great. Then this morning as I was starting things up before anyone got into work, I discovered it. When outlook 2010 was started it reported "Access is denied. You don't...

Yes indeed kjamezzz, that was my problem.
But same as Good-heart, no connection possible to OD when away from server. Probably because the 'Users and Groups" preferences point to OD-server  server.local  instead of the external DNS record. But the client can't find the OD server when pointing to the external DNS record, even when they are in the same network.

  • Outlook 2007 won't open .pst file from Outlook 2000

I have been using Outlook 2000 for 10 years and hit the 2GB limit. As a result, Outlook 2000 would not open mail and did not permit me to delete mail to clear space.
I’d been meaning to install my Office 2007 and this seemed like the time to do so. Once installed, I attempted to open my 2 GB PST file in Outlook 2007. No luck.
Messages: “The message interface has returned an unknown error. If the problem persists, restart Outlook.” And “Cannot display information. There is either a problem connecting to the server or an error has occurred.”
Researching on the Web, I found Microsoft guidance that I could create a new data file and import the old (ANSI) .PST file into this new (Unicode) .PST file. When I did
that, during the Import, I encountered another error message: “The file has reached its maximum size. (Followed by two unhelpful sentences – can’t be imported).”
OK, I think, I have to reduce the size of that file. Research yields Microsoft’s “oversized PST and PST crop tool.”
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/296088 I do that and follow the instructions to scan the truncated file with Microsoft’s
scanpst.exe tool, which is included with Office.
Another error: scanpst.exe will not complete its scan. I receive a mysterious error message with no indication what the exact problem is. I created multiple versions
of the truncated .PST file, each smaller than the last, so that the smallest was 1.7 GB. Still errors with scanpst.exe and ultimately no luck.
I have spent more than 10 hours trying to solve this problem and am at wit’s end. I’m a freelance writer, and it’s costing me money. What’s worse,
info on projects I’m supposed to be working on are locked in that PST file! All data is stored locally on a Dell laptop with Windows 7.
    Help anybody? Please? Thank you!

Fifteen hours later, I was back in business, having upgraded from Outlook 2000 to Outlook 2007, a process one would expect to take a half-hour tops. I'm no IT pro, but
I am pretty accomplished at fixing problems. This one seemed beyond my reach, as neither of the utilities Microsoft recommended to address the issue, the truncation tool and scanpst.exe, worked -- what a surprise! I engaged a local technician to diagnose the
problem remotely, and over a course of four hours he fixed it using a third-party program called "Outlook Recovery Toolbox." I'd actually downloaded that tool and fooled around a bit, but didn't use it for a full scan as I think that required a purchase, and
who knows if it's malware or what. Well, it worked.
So 15 hours lost. That cost me hundreds of dollars as I am self-employed, plus I have a $150 bill from the technician, which is more than fair for his two hours of labor
(the extra two hours were scanning and importing time). Again, Microsoft managed to turn into an epic ordeal what the consumer expects to be a straightforward upgrade process.
Now I have Outlook 2007, oh boy! The first thing I notice is the inflexible mail header above the message body. WTF is that supposed to be? Who was the Einstein who thought
that up? It renders USELESS like an inch of real estate right in the center of the screen! I find that it can be hidden (not, of course, with a simple, convenient and sensible right click ... oh NOOOO ... but through multi-click options available in the toolbar).
(For background, Outlook 2000 did not have that inflexible mail header -- the header info (subject, date, sender, CC) was part of the email, so if you scrolled down the
email, the header went with it and made the best possible use of available space).
Now here's a twist -- Outlook does not show, in your list of emails, whether an email has an attachment if the email was sent via Lotus Notes. That was a glitch in 2000,
and one I would expect to have been resolved in 2007. BUT NO. So, just moments ago, I have an email/meeting invitation sent from a client using Lotus Notes. Even though I had told Outlook to hide headers, it disobeyed me ...
why? Because this was a "meeting invite" email, offering me options, in that stupid inflexible header, to Accept, Decline, Propose New Time, & etc. Well, those options only increased the size of that inflexible header, so that the visible area of
the email WAS LESS THAN ONE INCH HIGH. Yes, I can adjust it -- how very productive!
These two Microsoft glitches / manifestations of poor design -- no alerting to attachments from Lotus clients and that horrid header -- very nearly conspired to cause
me to miss a critical attachment displayed only at the very bottom of the email. The document attached needs to be read and commented before the meeting, and only by the grace of God did I happen to scroll, IN THAT 3/4 INCH MAIL WINDOW, to the bottom and happen
    to spot said critical attachment.
Do I expect anything more from Microsoft ... other than more grief and stupidity? Sadly, I do not. It is my misfortune in life to have to use Microsoft Word on a daily
basis, as I have for the past 10 years.
Before that, I used WordPerfect and what a wonderful program it was! I recall using WordPerfect to write and design one lovely graphical document in particular that earned
me an A+ in class. WordPerfect was so easy and powerful, with virtually no hassles—just gratification. Is it better to have loved (WordPerfect) and lost, than to have never loved at all?
Unfortunately, since all my clients use Word, I have to as well. Frankly, and I hope this isn’t against board rules, I am merely speaking the truth as I see it—Microsoft
Word is an utterly wretched application that has caused me untold grief and aggravation. Bulleting, text boxes, fickle fonts, the list is very, very long …. But it only gets worse!!!
    The whole .doc .vs
docx is a complete debacle; the “Compatibility Pack” is a cruel joke. If I use Word 2000 on .docx documents, here are some of the inconveniences and frustrations that I encounter:
    Bulleting function grayed out
    Spelling errors not highlighted
Additional linespaces introduced into printed documents
Mysterious transposition of bold, italics and underlining
Inability to work with text boxes (“Error! Reference source not found!”)
    Track Changes not accurately recorded
These are not incidental issues. I’m a spelling bee champion, but unless the spelling highlight function works, I am bound to have a typo or two in a 20-page document.
This affects the quality of my work and my livelihood.
To make matters worse, my Windows 7 often won’t find .docx documents. If I had worked on a .docx document something four months that I recall included the word
“Rumplestiltskin,” the Windows 7 Find function should locate it, but it does not.
I could go on and on. How about the dismal wireless connectivity in Window 7, vs. XP, which was virtually flawless. But I’m trying to catch up on the 15 hours that I lost yesterday thanks to Microsoft’s
awful Outlook troubleshooting and upgrade functionality.

  • Word doc attachments to Outlook emails fail to open

Word attachments to emails received in Outlook fail to open (no response when click on "open"). Problem occurs once Acrobat 9 loaded
If saved still cannot open from the saved file. Problem removed by unistalling Acrobat.

Should have just right clicked on the file and selected the open-with option to chose WORD. Apparently you did something to open a DOC file in Acrobat sometime and the association was messed up.

    Hi,
Following solution might help you to resolve the issue.
    Solution1:
Issue happens because universe connection to the Database is not responding and the Data Source Name is not configured to write SQL Server 2005 database.
    Resolution
Created new DSN connection under SYSTEM DSN to SQL Server 2005 Database.
Import the universe from the designer.
    Go to File->Parameters.
    Edit Connection.
On the Database Middleware Page expand SQl Server 2005->Select SQL Server 2005 driver.
Change the DSN to new DSN connection
    Test the connection.
Save the Universe and Export it to the repository.
    Solution2:
I am taking Oracle as an example over here.
This can be caused when the SQLNET.ora is located in a remote location using mapped drives.
    Resolution
    To resolve,
check the registry [HKLM\SOFTWARE\ORACLE] you should see a folder called HOME0
look for any paths that contain a mapped drive partition
Change the mapped drive letter to a UNC path (
    server\folder)
Open a command prompt and do a tnsping using the tnsname and verify the location of the SQLNET.ora or TNSNAMES.ora
If the path is not updated to the new path
    Reboot the server

  • Issue after public folders migration Ex 2013 Cu3

    Hello,
after successful PF migration, Ex2010 to Ex2013 I could see everything working from Outlook.
Anyway, I wanted at the very end to compare folder statistics and permissions against legacy settings.
Unfortunately, at about 600 folders I could get error:
The security principal specified is already on the permission set.
I've checked one of affected folders via Outlook / Folder Permissions and could see doubled entries for same identity (imagine, two times the same account with the same Owner permissions) I've tried to delete it ;) but the result is that folder
lost completely the permissions and I can NOT change it over shell, ECP or Outlook anymore even I was the former owner.
So, is there something like ExFolders so I could reset the ACL on the affected folder ? It is quite urgent for me as I need to decide if I should do rollback or keep it as it is risking some future issues ...
    Thanks

    Hi,
As we know, ExFolders is not updated.and it is not supported for exchange 2013 currently.
I recommend you can create a script to re-add the permissions for all the folders.
If needs urgent, I recommend you post the requirement on Script forums :

  • IPhoto not showing up -- Network Home Folders on Windows server

When our users who have their home folder on a Windows server open iMovie, they can't access their iPhoto library within iMovie. The same is true for the 3rd party app, ComicLife. Is there something going wrong where the Windows server is screwing up whatever links the iPhoto library with other apps? Users who are on the Apple server are working just fine.
Thanks for any help you can give.
For reference, this is any mac client on 10.4.9 with Networked home folders going to either Win2003 server or Mac Server 10.4.10.

In case anyone else is looking... This was being caused by connecting to the home folders on the windows server using AFP. Switching it to SMB fixed the problem.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode to check if one of the extensions (Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) or if hardware acceleration is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox/Tools > Add-ons > Appearance).
    <b> To Enable SafeMode </b>
*You can open Firefox 4.0+ in Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or open the Help menu and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
*''Once you get the pop-up, just select "'Start in Safe Mode"''
If it works in Safe Mode and in normal mode with all extensions (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions) disabled then try to find which extension is causing it by enabling one extension at a time until the problem reappears.

    Hi hklbj23,
I'd like to know the version of TFS you're using. For your situation, you can delete the users in the group and then readd them to the group. After that, you can check if the users have access to the team project.
To make sure the permission of your credential, we can run tfssecurity command in VS command line to have a check. Please execute
tfssecurity /imx “domain\username” /collection:url, for more information about tfssecurity /imx, please refer to:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms400806.aspx
If you're using TFS 2012 Update2, then you can install the latest Update(4) to fix the issue. See the links below for more information about the similar problem:

I recent had to have my hard drive replaced. When I got home I did a fully recovery. I was able to use logic studio with no problem. Then I opened Garageband. • Can't open project after rebuilding Folders in Project Manager

I had a corrupted project so I renamed the cpd file.  A lot of Folders in Project Manager were lost, so I recreated the folders and imported all the topics back in.  I added one last Folder back in and RH was having a problem with it (I didn't write down the error message).  It booted me out.  Subsequent attempts to reopen this Project are unfruitful.  The message I get is that a certain folder (not the same one I was adding) will be added back in and needs to be properly deleted from Project Manager.  (I had renamed that Folder, but I did it inside of Project Manager.)

  • Clients can't login to OD when home folders are on server

Lion Server 10.7.2, Lion Clients 10.7.2
Fresh new server, not a single service is on, except for file sharing, dns, open directory.
After setting up network, time to add some clients.
Clients whose homefolders are marked as "only local" (in server app), can login to their account on a client machine, with obviously local homefolders.
The moment the "only local" setting is changed to a network homefolder location (the default "Users"), they can no longer login, and get a simple message not being able to login.
I do not have a lot of knowledge of servers, but this is a real simple setup:
Fresh server, only one client machine (for now).
In Directory Utility (on server AND client), the HomeDirectory and NFSHomeDirectory are matching, and pointing at the selected path for this network-user. As is in Workgroup manager, the homefolder path is pointing where is should.
Just tried on a leopard client machine. Binding OD in seconds, but with the same client login result.
Can anyone help me with this one?
    Thanks

Yes indeed kjamezzz, that was my problem.
But same as Good-heart, no connection possible to OD when away from server. Probably because the 'Users and Groups" preferences point to OD-server  server.local  instead of the external DNS record. But the client can't find the OD server when pointing to the external DNS record, even when they are in the same network.

  • Migrating Virtual Machine - Error "Failed to Complete planned Virtual Machine at migration destination" - Server 2012 R2

So to get started I'll give a bit of background on the Infrastructure we are currently working with.
    We have:
2 x Hyper-V Hosts (Currently 2 for testing migrations, this will increase once we have a working platform)
2 x File Servers acting as storage nodes for VHD Storage
    1 x Physical DC
The Hyper-V Hosts both have Server 2012 R2 Datacentre installed, the rest have Server 2012 R2 Standard installed and configured.
We currently have some VM's sitting on one host and I am in the process of simulations to make sure live migration is working between the two HV Hosts (This is a non-clustered setup), Everything is on the domain and i've been using a domain admin account
to administer these servers for these simulations.
We plan on having VHD's stored on FS01 and FS02, basically our primary host is going to have all primary servers on and then those vhd's will be stored on FS01 and then all secondary/redundant servers are going to be on the second host and vhd's stored on
    FS02 - Simple enough?
I can perform Data migrations between both FS01 and FS02 using the Hyper-V Management tool on both hosts without any issues. The issue I am currently encountering is when I perform a migration of the "Virtual Machine Only". Now, this simulation
works when the data for the VM is stored on either of the hosts using UNC pathway, no hiccups at all, I receive the below error when ever the data is stored on either FS01 or FS02 using again, UNC pathway (These VM's power on and work perfectly otherwise while
    hosted on FS01/02).
    Error:
I've researched this quite a lot and have gone through countless solutions other people are having.

http://support2.microsoft.com/kb/2249906 (This solution didn't work, in fact i couldn't even get CMD to run the command)
    Now, with
THIS SOLUTION that I attempted I worked with adding all the hosts and FS01 (because nothing is on FS02 at the moment) in an attempt to get the VM Migration only working between hosts and still receive the same error.
As a testing option, I Moved the Data for the VM back to one of the hosts using UNC pathway and then performed a live migration to the other host no problems, then performed a data migration back to FS01 and that also worked. I don't particularly want to
do this with production VM's as I have at least 6 x 780GB vhd's that need to be moved and this would move them more than once, obviously not ideal.
If someone is able to help me out, or at least point me in the right direction, that would be awesome!

I did try adding the 'Everyone' permission for the testing of migration to see if it was a permission issue which didn't help at all before I'd posted this article.
This ended up being a Computer Delegation issue, I'd neglected to add the 'cifs' (SMB Protocol) on ALL servers for ALL servers in the cluster, I didn't add that permission in my FS01 or FS02 servers for each other or the hyper-v servers that were in operation.
I've now started our production Hyper-V Servers and they haven't skipped a beat since adding in those delegations correctly to all servers as a "Full mesh" type setup.
Thanks for responding in any case :)
This is the permission I am referring to if anyone else has the issue:
    AD>Computers>{Name of Computer}
I also performed an active directory replication forcefully with:
    repadmin /replicate <Target> <Source> dc=Domain,dc=local
    Run as a powershell command.

  • Safari "Failed to open page" errors

What would cause Safari to suddenly start getting "Failed to open page" errors from I web-site I was successfully browsing 2 minutes ago?
I was browsing REI.com; viewed several different pages, then tried to go to a different REi.com page and all of a sudden Safari won't load the page. and reports a "Failed to Open Page" error, with the excuse "the server where this page is located isn't responding"??
I thought maybe my internet connection had failed, but I tried some other sites cnn.com, apple.com and everything is just fine.
Then i went to a different computer on the same network and tried rei.com from Firefox and its just fine.
    Any ideas or suggestions?

If your Safari won't open, one or more of the following procedures should fix it:
    1. Go to Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    ¥ history.plist
    ¥ lastsession.plist
(Safari may not load properly If these two files are corrupted.)
    2. Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
    3. Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
(Again, faults in stored cookies may interfere with Safari's launch.)
    4. Check whether any of your third-party internet plug-ins may be interfering with the launch of Safari by carefully moving them to the desktop (do NOT delete them at this stage). You can find these in two places:
Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/ folder, and Global plug-ins are located in the Macintosh HD/Library/Internet Plug-ins/ folder.
Also look in Library/Input Managers where other third party add-ons may lurk. If you find a SIMBL folder, please note that some SIMBLE.bundles may require updating or possibly removal.
Restart Safari and place them back in the correct folders, one at a time, closing and re-opening Safari each time. If you discover that one of them was causing the problem with launching Safari, trash it and download and install a fresh copy.

  • Correct permissions for user home folders?

I recently installed a new Mac Mini with Server 10.10.2
I have about 10 clients running off the server (an open directory master), they are setup as local network users and have home folders on the server.
I had to copy contents of the home folders from a previous (crashed) server and I can't seem to get the permissions right.
A couple of the users use home directory syncing, so they have a local copy of their home folder on the computer they usually use, but changes aren't getting synced across the network to the server. An example is the dock, I keep removing and replacing icons in the dock, but logging out and logging back in returns the dock to its old configuration (presumably bringing the old config back from the server).
Is there a tool which resets user directory permissions for network home folders? Or can someone give me any guidance how to sort this out?
    Thanks
    James

In the sidebar of the Server.app window, select the icon at the top with the name of the server. Then select the Storage tab in the main window pane.
Navigate to the folder in question and select it. From the popup menu at the bottom with a gear icon, select
              Edit Permissions...
Verify that the permissions are what they should be, and make changes if necessary. Then, from the same menu, select
              Propagate Permissions...
Check all applicable boxes, including Access Control List. If in doubt, check all boxes. Click OK.
