Outlook Reading Pane Inline Editing?

Is it possible to allow inline editing of items being viewed in the reading pane, like an Outlook task?
Here is some background:
One of my clients uses OneNote for task lists, which works ok to a point. I've never liked how there is no archive of completed tasks and they currently make a note tab called "completed" and manually move checked items there from time
to time. But the big problem is the Notebook is shared over the network between 5 employees and some of the Section files are over 8MB and when viewing and editing these sections its very slow. So I want to try and migrate them to use Outlook Tasks for there
"to do" list, which is hard since OneNote is so simple and fast. But Outlook will be able to handle archiving completed tasks and keep the system fast.
I've created some custom Task views to make the task list nice and simple. One thing i don't like and I know the client won't is having to open a window to view & edit the task. Enabling the "Reading pane" on the right of the task list solves half this
problem, but it would be nice if one could edit the task text contents in the reading pane.
I've looked all through Outlook trying to find a setting and can't find one. So i'm wondering if this is possible? If not maybe is there a way to have opened tasks open in a pane rather than a new window when you double click them?

I agree with you - editing of tasks in the reading pane would be very productive and help with the management of tasks.
However given that 'in-pane editing' of emails was a new feature only in 2013, I gather that we'll be waiting for a future update before this will be made available.
Any updates that can be shared on this?

  • Outlook Reading Pane -- Disable for All Folders

    I am really hoping the answer to this is not "you have to do it for each folder" (because I have hundreds of them) -- how do I disable the reading pane for ALL Outlook folders with a single click?

    Hello,
    In Outlook we can define view templates to to easily apply changes to multiple folders at once. Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013 also have a separate feature to copy the current view of a folder to other folders.
    For more information, please refer:
    http://www.msoutlook.info/question/51
    Or, we can just use the /nopreview command to open your Outook with the Reading Pane off. To do this, please refer:

    Hope this helps.

  • Is there a preview/reading pane (as in Outlook) that allows reading before opening e-mail?

    I am accustomed to Outlook Reading Pane that allows previewing e-mail, then delete before it is opened. Any such option with Thunderbird?

    Press F8 to bring up the message pane. Note, this isn't just a preview, it's actually opening the message.

  • Problem displaying reading pane

    My outlook reading pane keep changing from below to hidden. How do I make it stay in below?
    It just started doing this, I didn't have this problem before.
    Thanks!

    You may want to ask in the MS Office for Mac 2011 Oulook user forums.
    I keep mine to the Right and have never had problems with the reading pane changing places.

  • How to personalize reading panes in Outlook 2013, where 2 different users share the same mail account in O365

    A company is using O365, with Outlook 2013 on their clients. Two people added a general account to their accountlist in Outlook 2013, which is used for "sales". For example, customers can send questions to this "sales" mail account and
    both employees can read the mail and answer the customer from that acoount.
    My question is the following.
    Both employees would like to have a different reading pane/lay-out. At this moment, if the first user change his view (in his Outlook client) to the view he likes, the second user see a change of his view too. The first person like to see the preview
    pane, the second don't... If the second change the view again to the one he likes, the first person will lose his prefered view.
    I can't see any options to personalize the views at this account in Outlook or elsewhere in O365 for both people seperately. Is it possible anyway? If yes, how?

    Hi,
    I am not familiar with Office 365 account. But in Exchange On-premise server, the Outlook view would be synced to the Exchange mailbox.
    If two users open the same Exchange mailbox in Outlook, the synced view for the mailbox would be also be updated to the local Cached Outlook profile. Therefore, two users can't always view the mailbox in their customized views respectively.

  • This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane. Open the item to read its contents Outlook 2013

    One of Outlook 2013 of Office Home and Business in Windows 7 Pro 64bit who is connecting to a local Exchange 2010 server is having the following error:
    This item cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane. Open the item to read its contents.
    When launching Outlook, it seems work fine. If user click other folders and click Inbox again. The error comes out. It only happens on Inbox folder.
    I have tried the followings with no luck.
    1. Rebuilt new Outlook profile.
    2. Rebuilt new Windows profile + Outlook profile.
    3. Disabled all add-ins.
    There are 2 ways I can make it work.
    1. I disabled "Cache Mode", then it starts working well.
    2. Start Outlook with outlook.com /safe.
    So the question is why in Cache mode, Outlook 2013 cannot display the item in reading pane.
    Any hint will be appreciated.

    CliffZ,
    One hint: Do an offline virus scan on the affected computer:
    1. Check if your computer has a 32- or a 64-bit system. Right-click on Computer icon, choose Properties. System type reveals the bitness.
    2. Download the appropriate virus scanning version from http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline
    Note: If you're on Windows 8.1: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-is-windows-defender-offline-beta
    3. Insert a USB stick with nothing important on. Observe the drive letter (F:, G: etc ...) assigned to it.
    4. Start the downloaded program and follow the instructions. Note: Choose the correct drive letter from 3 above.
    5. Restart your computer so it will boot from the USB stick. Depending on computer brand you can often press F12 to get a boot menu.
    Sometimes you have to enter BIOS to tell the computer to boot from USB if present.
    The quick scan starts. Abort it and select Full Scan.
    Let it run overnight.

  • Can I tell at server-level if a message has been displayed in the Reading Pane in Outlook?

    Hello,
    Does anyone know if there are any traces at server-level (Exchange 2010) if a message has been displayed in the Reading Pane of Outlook 2010? The message would still be marked as Read in the recipient's mailbox.
    Thanks,
    - Alan.

    Hi,
    If you want to know whether an email has been read by recipient, you can either request a read receipt or enable the tracking for read status for messages by using the
    Set-OrganizationConfig –ReadTrackingEnabled:$True command.
    A related blog for your reference.
    Question: Is it possible to check if a message has been read, even when the sender forgot to check the box “Request a Read receipt for this message”?

  • After upgrade to outlook 2013 Contacts have the default picture in reading pane

    I'm using Windows 8 on a domain (using a domain account not a Microsoft account) connecting to Exchange, all my Contacts were outlook contacts with pictures and other data, I could see the picture of the contact in the reading pane and people pane while
    using Outlook 2010.
    After the upgrade to Outlook 2013 the contacts are not lost (I can see them in the People Hub) but it appears that they are unavailable in the reading pane because all I can see is the default picture (the default picture picture is also visible in the notifications).
    If I put the mouse over the name of the people while in the reading pane all I can see is the card with the default info (the only data visible is that the contact is available in the next 8 hours), if I compose a new message and hover the name of the contact
    i can see the card with all the data (picture, company, etc.).
    Is this the default behavior in Outlook 2013 if you are in a domain and not connected to any service or there is a way to show the picture of my contacts in every part of outlook?

    No, it should be available still. Did you recreate this mail profile after the upgrade?
    Try forcing a complete update of the Office Line Address Book via the Send/Receive tab-> Send/Receive Groups-> Download Address Book
    Otherwise, reset the OAB by renaming your oab-file to .old when Outlook is closed. You'll find them here:

  • Outlook window moves off computer screen to right when I click to expand reading pane - can't reply to emails

    Outlook 2010 opens fine.  When I click on the reading pane to expand it to full screen it moves off the right of the screen.
    Can't reply to emails as pane is not available.  What do I need to do so pane comes up on the screen

    Hi Rick,
    Can you post a screenshot here so we can better understand your situation?
    For your issue, please follow the steps below to narrow down the root cause:
    Try reset view settings for your Outlook. In Outlook 2010, switch to
    View tab, click Reset View button in the
    Current View group.
    Start Outlook with the command line Outlook.exe /resetnavpane, type the command line in the Run window and press Enter.
    Start Outlook in safe mode to determine if it could be caused by the 3rd-party add-ins, to do so, type
    Outlook.exe /safe in the Run window and press Enter. If the behavior won't occur in safe mode, try disable all the add-ins, and enable them one by one to find which one might cause this problem.

  • How do I open a reading pane when using Outlook, similar to that in IE?

    When using Outlook in IE I am able to open a reading pane (without opening the message) that shows a portion of the e-mail. I can't seem to duplicate this feature in Firefox.

    Are you talking about Outlook Web Access / App or the Outlook email program installed on your PC? <br />

    OWA doesn't offer the same features for other browsers that it has for Internet Explorer.

  • This item cannot be displayed in the reading pane

    Hello all.  I've bene scowering the net trying to find a solution to this problem for over a month now and every solution I have found doesn't work.  Here's the low down.
    It only happens on this client and not other outlook clients. Meaning the same person could open his email on another system and the views are fine.  OWA is also fine.  I'm pretty confident its not Exchange but Outlook on this system.  I get
    two messages.
    When receiving emails from a specific address that sends emails with audio attachements (shoretel's voicemail to email) the user gets "this item cannot be displayed in the reading pane"  There is no active content in these emails.  They are plain
    text.  Next, when he sends a meeting invite to a specific person or receives an email from a specific person he gets "This item contains active content that cannot be displayed in the Reading Pane".  Here's what I've done so far.
    I've deleted and reinstalled Outlook 2010 (pro plus)
    I've deleted his profile and rebuilt it.  I've deleted the profile from the registry and reinstalled outlook 2010.
    I've disabled all pluggins.
    I've cleared the forms cache and made sure the forms view matches someones that's working.
    and of course, rebooted.  I've found fixes for different versions of outlook but nothing I have found has worked.  Short of backing up to PST, nuking his mailbox, rebuilding it, and importing the PST i'm at a loss.  I don't think I need to
    get that drastic if on another machine and on OWA it works fine.  Anyone have a clue as to what I could try?

    Hi This is what worked for me:
    Just to clarify in my case, any email that had a form attached, when I tried to open it, the actual email body was just blank.
    I also realised I couldn't create new forms, I could see all the preloaded ones but couldn't open.
    So this is the advise I followed:
    Clearing the forms cache
    The first thing you should try is clearing the forms cache. This will make sure that, in the case of using a custom form, the latest published version of your custom forms gets loaded again. In the case that you just uninstalled an application that was using
    a custom form, it will purge this cached form and Outlook will try to load the original message form.
    To clear the cache;
    Outlook 2007 and previous
    Tools-> Options…-> tab Other-> button Advanced Options…-> button Custom Forms…-> button Manage Forms…-> button Clear Cache
    Outlook 2010 and Outlook 2013
    File-> section Options-> section Advanced-> group Developers-> button Custom Forms…-> button Manage Forms…-> button Clear Cache
    It worked when I went back to previous email the attachment looked like it had gone, double clicked and it took a while to open as it needed to load new forms.
    Do this before rebuilding or deleting a mailbox.  Also try SP2 if need be.

  • Is it possible to disable the + button at the bottom of a view where Inline Editing in enabled?

    As per the title, I have a list view where Inline Editing is enabled. I need to know how to disable or hide the green plus icon at the bottom of the list (Add new item).

    Thank you Wendy! That solution works great.
    So all that is needed is this:
    <script
    src="http://code.jquery.com/jquery-1.10.2.min.js"
    type="text/javascript">
    </script>
    <style
    type="text/css">
    .ms-listviewtable
    img[alt='New']{
      display:none;
    </style>

  • Inline editing on discussion board

    I have a discussion board on which I have created a view to show only posts that I have made and switched on the inline editing option, but it doesn't give me the boxes to update the row. The inline editing works on a general list but not on the discussion
    baord list. How do we get it to work?

    You have to actually create a Datasheet View.
    In the ribbon, choose the List tab and click Create View. In the resulting menu, choose Datasheet View. By default, the same columns will show in the view that are in the standard view. Click okay and you should be good to go.
    For some reason, the Discussion Board requires a separate view to be created to be able to use Datasheet View.

  • Received emails show nothin in the reading pane

    I have an issue with Outlook 2010 on a Win7 32-bit client. This user is receiving emails and nothing shows up in the reading pane. It only happens to certain emails but it happens often enough to be really annoying. When you go to reply/forward the email
    the text will show up but it will show up in a weird font with paragraph marks and there will be dots between every word. I forwarded the email to myself and the formatting of the original message shows up just fine. The email shows up fine on the users phone
    as well as in OWA. The issue is specific to this outlook installation. I deleted her profile and data files and let the mailbox recreate and I also tried repairing the office installation with no luck. I've tried playing around with some fonts and stationary
    settings(I think this is the culprit) with no success.
    Is there any way to do a reset on outlook and go back to default settings accross the board? Or do you know of any settings I may just be missing that would cause this?

    Hi,
    Try to reset the view.
    Click Start->Run and type Outlook.exe /cleanviews and click OK.
    If it still not work, I suggest you creating a new outlook profile. How to do this, you can refer to this article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/829918
    Hope that helps.
    I forgot to add that i've already tried creating a new profile. I'll try resting the view.

  • Reading Panes views on Shared Mailbox changes automatically issue

    Can someone please advise if this is a known bug or if it's just because it is the way the software is configured?
    Our email account are hosted by Microsoft on Office365.
    Email accounts are added as an account on Outlook2010.
    When accessing shared mailboxes, the reading pane view settings changes automatically from time to time from "Date to Category".
    I noticed that others have raised a query on this previously but never got a properly answer.
    NOTE:  PLEASE DO NOT SUGGEST TURNING OFF READING PANE AS THAT IS A STUPID IDEA FOR THOSE WHO SUGGESTS IT.  We all know you can turn it off as an option but if people wants to use it, you don't just tell them not to use it as a workaround.
    You wouldn't tell someone to go catch a bus if their car is broken temporary.  You fix the car so that you can use it later.
    Thank you.
