Outlook suddenly prompts for password / Exchange 2013

I just checked the internal DNS and the autodiscover record did not exist so I created it. The old server records were removed.I don't know if adding the record to internal DNS will solve the problem because all the clients are external.I also forgot to mention one more thing that I don't think its causing any problems but I have an additional accepted domain, so mydomain.org as the main one and mydomain.com as accepted too.So for autodiscover on the second domain I'm using redirect from autodiscover.mydomain.com to autodiscover.mydomain.orgSo for my internal DNS I have:autodiscover.mydomain.org - internal ipmail.mydomain.org - internal ipand for the External DNS I have:autodiscover.mydomain.org - public ipmail.mydomain.org - public ipautodiscover.mydomain.com - public secondary ipI will check if after doing this change on the DNS...

Hello everyone,I've upgraded an Exchange 2010 to Exchange 2013 but problems started when the Exchange 2010 was removed from the co-existence.The desktop clients suddenly disconnect from the server and prompt for the user credentials, some times if the user provides the credentials right away it fails, but if the user waits about 1 minute, it accepts it. This is happening with outlook 2010, outlook 2013, outlook 2011 for mac and even the new outlook 2016 (provided with office 365) and for some users is more frequent than for others.ActiveSync and OWA works fine, so this is an Outlook Anywhere issue, I've checked all settings that I think could be the reason but no luck so far.Something that I noticed with the TestExchangeConnectivity is that when I do the Outlook Connectivity test if I use manual server settings it works and look like...

    After exchange 2007 to exchange 2013 migration all internally connected outlooks 2010 (xp, vista, win7, win8) prompt for password using external email user address as user id.
    Below some of my settings and informations.
    Internal domain: contoso.local
    External domain: contoso.com
    Exchange is NOT published to Internet at all.
    Internally OWA, ECP runs OK.
    Test-OutlookWebservices with user.name(at)contoso.local or contoso\user.name - runs OK
    Test-OutlookWebservices with user.name(at)contoso.com - fails
    Common scenario - (all happens internally):
    1.User starts Outlook
    2.Outlook prompts for password with default user.name(at)contoso.com as id
    - while user tries to authenticate using his domain password - outlook re-prompts
    - while user changes id from user.name(at)contoso.com to user.name(at)contoso.local or contoso\user.name and authenticates - Outlook connets to exchange and till next Outlook it runs ok.
    I am bus with that issue since 1 week and I am already bit tired. I was looking for answer via gogle/bing and went through tons of "Outlook perpetually prompts for password" threads and blogs. No success.
    Do you have any clue where else start to play with that?

    Should not be some kind of mapping set somehow in AD between user.name(at)contoso.com and user.name(at)contoso.local?
    I have impresion that issue is somewhere in the fact that outlook is trying to connect using contoso.com instead of contoso.local in ntlm credentials.

  • Windows XP Machines Always Prompt for Credentials (Exchange 2013, Outlook 2010)

    I am running Exchange 2013 on Server 2012 Datacenter (VM).  Windows 7 clients with Outlook 2010 work fine.  Windows XP clients with Outlook 2010 prompt for credentials (user name and password) each time Outlook is started, and checking the "Remember
    my password" box does not prevent this from happening the next time.  The "Always prompt for logon credentials" checkbox on the "Security" tab of the "More Settings" section of the Exchange account is not checked.  I have found a myriad of posts
    with similar issues, but they all seem to have to do with SBS/Exchange 2007, and I haven't come across something that works as a solution for me.  One suggested certificate issues, and I was having certificate security warnings, but I got that resolved. 
    I am hopefuly that the fact that this only happens on Windows XP will be telling.

  • Why does Outlook keep prompting for password

    We have seen our community members ask questions about Outlook keeps prompting for credentials many times. This issue could be caused by numerous reasons. Below is a list of the most common reasons for this problem:
    Outlook is configured to prompt you for credentials
    Incorrect password cached in credential storage
    Required Authentication Settings for outgoing server and incoming server
    Outlook Anywhere is not configured to use NTLM Authentication
    Corrupt Outlook profile
    Slow or unstable network connection
    Antivirus programs
    Shared calendars
    Outlook is configured to prompt you for credentials
    If you are using an Exchange account, there is a setting in your Outlook profile to always prompt for logon credentials. To find the setting, please follow:
    1. In Outlook 213, go to File tab > Info >
    Account Settings > Account Settings…
    2. Highlight your Exchange account and click Change button.
    3. Click on More Settings button.
    4. Select the Security tab.
    5. Under the User Identification, make sure the “Always prompt for logon credentials” option is not selected.
    If you are using other types of email, please make sure you have ticked the option “Remember password”.
    Incorrect credential cached in Credential Manager
    Your Windows system stores user credentials on your computer. If the cached credentials are incorrect, you will be prompted for password. This issue usually happens after the password for your domain user account is changed. Before your password changed,
    you saved your credentials. The stored credentials are not overwritten when Outlook triggers the authentication prompt even if you enable the Remember my credentials option.
    To fix this issue, you need to remove the corrupted credentials, follow these steps:
    Click Start,      click Control Panel, and then click Credential Manager.
     Note If View by is set to Category, click User Accounts first, and then click Credential Manager.
    Locate  the set of credentials that has Outlook in the name.
    Click the name to expand the set of credentials, and then click Remove from Vault.
    Repeat step 3 for any additional sets of credentials that have the word Outlook in the name.
    Required Authentication Settings for outgoing server and incoming server
    Different email provider may need different authentication settings. Please make sure you have set the server settings correctly. You can contact your email provider to gather the information.
    In general, we select the “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication” option and the first bullet “Use same settings as my incoming mail server”.
    In addition, click on the Advanced tab and check if you have enter the correct Server Port Number and select the correct encrypt type. Below is a screenshot for an IMAP account:
    Outlook Anywhere is not configured to use NTLM Authentication
    The Outlook Anywhere feature allows you to access your Exchange account remotely from the Internet when you are working outside your organization's firewall.
    When using Outlook Anywhere to connect to your Exchange server, we need to choose
    the authentication method among Basic Authentication, NTLM Authentication and Negotiate Authentication. The difference among them is the way that the passwords are sent when connecting to the server. With Basic Authentication,
    the password is sent in clear text. Using NTLM Authenticationcan significantly reduce the number of password prompts.
    To check the authentication setting, please go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings,
    select the Exchange account, and then click
    Change. In the Change Account wizard, click
    More Settings, and then click the Connection tab. Click the Exchange Proxy Settings button and now, you can see the settings under
    Proxy authentication settings. Try to change the authentication to
    NTLM Authentication and then check the issue again.
    Slow or unstable network connection
    If your network connection is slow or unstable, Outlook may lose connection to the mail server. When Outlook try to reconnect, it will prompt for the credentials. To verify this, please switch to a stable network environment and then check if this issue
    persists.
    Corrupt Outlook Profile
    Corrupt profile may cause Outlook to no longer remember your password. Please try to create a new mail profile in Control Panel and reconfigure your email account in the new profile to fix the issue. To create a new mail profile, you can refer:

    Antivirus software
    Antivirus software usually integrates into your Outlook and it may cause some conflicts. Try to temporarily turn off your antivirus software to check if the issue will be gone.
    Shared Calendar
    Shared calendars can impact the user credentials, this issue may also occur if you have shared calendars opened in Outlook. You can try to unselect the shared calendar to check the result. It’s recommended to not open the shared calendar unless you want

    I went through point by point by point, top to bottom, checking and verifying every single item as a possible cause for why my system (Outlook 2013 running on Windows 8.1 and connecting to Exchange 2010) insists on prompting me for my password every single
    time I start Outlook.  None of the solutions worked, my system still prompts me.  I don't even have to supply a password.  When the prompt dialog appears, I just cancel it.  Within a few seconds, the bottom Outlook status bar changes to
    "Need Password" with a key icon to the left.  Then I just click on that message and immediately Outlook connects to Exchange.
    The freaking software is BROKEN!  Period.

  • Outlook 2010 prompting for password

    Hi everybody. I ran into an issue yesterday morning where at one of our sites Outlook 2010 has started prompting for a username and password. If the user types in their username as "MYDOMAIN\myuser" and their password, it lets them in but the Exchange
    status shows as "Disconnected". If the user sets their username to just "myuser" without the domain on the front it lets them in and works as expected until they close Outlook, at which point they have to enter their credentials again. 
    The strangest thing about this is that it's only affecting one of our sites and only Outlook 2010. Users running 2007 and 2003 do not have the problem and only users at this physical location have the problem. Does anybody know where I can look? I have tried
    clearing stored credentials, created new Outlook profiles and reset passwords. None of these things seem to have had any effect. 

    After changing a ton of outlook settings, deleting the user's account profile on outlook, deleting their domain profile from the effected computer, trying to fix the registry, deleting stored credentials, etc.... almost everything else I found something
    that FINALLY worked for me after over a year and about 12 different users being effected. 
    in the past I would just give up after much frustration and upgrade them to Office 2013 but that gets very expensive especially when I have 57 other users that could potentially run into the same issue. 
    Here is what I did. 
    - back up the user's data. log out and log into local admin
    - delete the user from the local registry
    - repair Office 2010 through control panel/programs, restart
    - have user log back in with their credentials to make new local profile. recover their backed up documents. log out and log back in as local admin. 
    - install hotfix KB2597011
    - restart computer
    - install hotfix KB2583935
    -restart computer
    - log in, open outlook and setup user's account. 
    Some of these steps may be skipped as I didn't find the hot-fixes until after I repaired office, however I am just providing what I did in the process to end up with a working outlook again. 
    Some things unique to my situation that may or may not help. 
    - I noticed some of the computers have Office2010 32bit installed on 64 bit machines. 
    - Some of the users were swapped over using a profile mover program when we moved to a domain environment. 
    - For me this always happens when the user's passwords expire and they have to log in to the portal to change it. Then outlook starts with the repeated prompt for passwords. It is always computer specific and nothing but what I provided above has worked
    other than re installing windows 7 and then office or upgrading to office 2013. 

  • Outlook 2010 prompting for password each login to Exchange 2013

    We have a new member server w/ Windows Server 2012 and Exchange 2013.  User's mailboxes were migrated from an old Windows Server 2003 server w/ Exchange 2003 by creating new empty mailboxes in Exchange 2013 then we exported/imported
    .pst files instead of migrating exchange stores.  Every time any users opens Outlook, they are being prompted to log in with domain credentials.  Obviously I'm clicking on "Remember my password", too. The workstations are all
    using Outlook 2010 and on a mix of Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 (terminal server with Outlook 2010 installed for remote users). Some users were using Outlook 2010 prior to the migration to Exchange 2013 and some were on Outlook
    2007 but upgraded to Outlook 2010. I'm almost to the point of telling the users it's a new "feature" of Exchange 2013.  I'm confident that it's not stored passwords or credentials on the workstations, I've removed, deleted, created and
    recreated those credentials.  I've changed domain passwords and that didn't help either.  Any hints, tips or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

       These settings can be found under your Outlook profile, "More Settings > Connection > Exchange Proxy Settings."
       If you have Outlook Anywhere enabled, then you should force all Outlook clients to use HTTP when connecting.  Ensure you have  "On fast networks, connect using HTTP..."  AND "On slow networks, connect using HTTP...".  If you
    don't, anytime you dock, undock, get a new IP address, refresh your IP address, go to sleep, idle, anything that causes your IP stack wants to renegotiate connective will cause a password prompt to appear, EVERYTIME.

  • Outlook keeps prompting for password

    This is a weird situation.  User logs in to domain without issues and is able to access outlook.  However, during the middle of the day,  outlook keeps prompting user for authentication or password.
    Profile has been re-created.  ESSO cache was cleared, but still the same thing. Created separate email profile for other email accounts she access, but same issue still occurs.
    Has anyone seen this issue and what resolution have you used.

    Truly I don't mean to disparage your comment/proposed answer, but in today's day and age one should really never, ever use "Remember my Password" for any context.  This means web forms even on trusted sites and/or when the windows subsystem
    is called to prompt you for your Windows Password.
    This is a very bad practice for two reasons:
    The first is due to Heartbleed and/or the like-wise thousands of malware that are constantly attempting to hijack your username/password entry.  Please understand that when you ask systems to remember your password what is happening on the backend. 
    That password is being saved somewhere, or a cookie is being set.  The only "safe" way to remember your password is in your head. 
    The second is due to account lockouts. If you routinely use "Remember my Password", especially across several computers (home, work) and devices (ActiveSync on iPhone/iPad, etc.) then you are a prime candidate for getting a locked out domain account.
    We, in IT, won't like you very much after that :)  Please understand that when you choose that option, those features do not remember to update all those places you have saved when you reset your password (every 90, 120 days, whatever your organization's
    password policy dictates).  As soon as you do, you will begin to lock out all sorts of applications and/or your domain account.
    As I said above, the only "safe" place for you to store your password is in your brain.  Now this gets difficult over time because you also don't want to use the same password over and over again for different places.  Because when you
    do get compromised (and I do mean when, not "if") that hacker will not only have your password, but also will know where all you have used it.  And the first place they will go is your online Bank, Savings, online stock, etc...  If
    you don't routinely rotate your passwords, and use different ones then you may just as well hand over the keys to your house.
    Use a format like "for every letter O, I will use a zero", "I will use a 3 for the letter E" or "instead of the letter S, I will use a 5", then pick something only you would remember, like "that trip to Puerto Rico
    was memorable"... so your new password would be Pu3rt0 5ic0.  Throwing in a space helps combat robot hacking.  Now this is slightly bad too though because they are dictionary or common words.  Then keep on that theme and think up a few
    more passwords that you will remember, AirPlan3 Tix, 5andy B3ach3s! <-- and if/when they require special chars, throw a "bang" or "exclamation mark" on there.
    If this seems a huge imposition (my gut would tell you to get over it, but in IT, hey we try to help too!) ask your Systems Admins/Architects to implement a Federation provider (like OKTA or OneLogin, or ADFS - probably least preferable).  Then they
    can setup the multitude of hosted service providers (think "cloud applications" though I hate that word) for either SAML based Single Sign On, or leverage that service's proprietary "Password Safe" aka "Secure Web Authentication". 
    Or lastly, for yourself you can go download KeePass.  This is a "wallet" style application that you can lock away all your passwords; though you will need to remember to update them in KeePass as you then may reset them.  Single Sign On
    is always more preferential because they will typically use your Domain credentials (i.e., Kerberos authentication local to your Org's domain) as part of the solution.

  • SCP suddenly prompting for password

    I have a task running in launchd that transfers files to remote machines via scp and lately it's been failing. When I run the scp command on the command line, it prompts for a password. I have the rsa files set up on the local and remote machines and have been doing this kind of password-less login and file transfer successfully for a very long time. This just started happening. Does anyone know if any recent updates broke this? If so, what specifically is going on?
    Here's what the failing scp command looks like:
    scp /Volumes/data/secure1/public_html/forms/classifieds/sunlist.js [email protected]:public_html/forms/classifieds/
    Every time the script tries to run in launchd, this shows up in the system log:

    I had already found out about the permissions issue in Googling about this but I kept finding people recommending different permissions settings. I didn't know it was spelled out in the ssh manual so thank you for that. (And FWIW, it was already set correctly.)
    The SSH connection does not fail, but then again, now I'm not having any problems with SCP anymore either. It seems to have gone away on its own so hopefully this is one of those mystery problems that just fixes itself.
    Thanks for the info though. The -vvv flag will help next time if it starts up again.

  • Updated iphone and now outlook is prompting for password

    My boss is having an issue with his phone.  He updated the software for his iphone by plugging it into his office PC and using itunes.  Unfortunately, his Outlook software on his PC is prompting him to enter his password every few minutes.  The user name that automatically populates in this pop-up prompt is his iCloud user name.  When I spoke with an Apple Support employee, he was not helpful at all and told me that this is a Microsoft issue.  This never happened prior to him updating his phone.  Is there anyone who has had this problem and can help me?

    The way to check is to go to Control Panel and search for "iCloud".  If iCloud appears (see first image below), double-click on it.  This will be the iCloud control panel for Windows.  If he is syncing his computer with his iCloud account it will look similar to the second image below.

    User is promting for password in Enviroment Outlook 2010, Ex2013 , Windows7 . 
    User is accessing outlook through internet and VPN
    to work around  I have putted google DNS "8.8.8.8"on NIC card 
    Now user is able to access his outlook without any issue .
    But I am sure when user will back to office he will face issue again as he his DNS will point to Google.
    Publicly Autodiscover is publish on "RADIUS.HCL.com" as example
    Localy                               "Outlook.HCL.com" 
    Here is my troubleshooting
    So when I do nslookup to RADIUS.HCL.COM
    it give wrong response   radius.HCL.com.ad.hcl.com

    Before going further, I would like to ask for some information:
    Does this issue just occur on one user? If no, please switch to another PC to have a test.
    Does Outlook work fine after closing the pop windows?
    For troubleshooting, I recommend you to change method of authentication to Negotiate Authentication to have a try:
    Open Control Panel, then choose Mail.
    Click Email Account and then choose the account.
    Click Change and then Click More Settings.
    Choose Security tap and change the Logon network security to
    Negotiate Authentication.
    Unchecked the box that states Always prompt for login credentials.

    We are in a migration of Exchange 2007 to Exchange 2013, so for the moment it is a coexistence.
    I migrated 2 mailboxes to Exchange 2013. After the migration, outlook started prompting for a password by starting outlook. Once the password has been entered, outlook works fine. But that happens only if outlook cache mode is active. If I disable cached
    mode, outlook starts without prompting for a password.
    So I deactivated cached mode, deleted the ost file and again activated cached mode. Now Outlook starts without prompting for a password, even if cached mode is active.
    Deleting the ost file for 1 or 2 users is fine, but not if there are 200 more mailboxes to migrate.
    I cannot reproduce the behavior with test mailboxes, created after Exchange 2013 has been installed into the organization. All these mailboxes can be migrated without password prompts.
    By the way, I found different posts about the authentication settings for outlook anywhere. I found on Exchange 2007 that the ClientAuthenticationmode was Basic, while NTLM on Exchange 2013. So I changed it to NTLM as well. Everything is still working.
    I am going to migrate 2 more mailboxes, and I will see tomorrow if the problem still exists.
    Any Suggestion?

    I also found many similar issues had been solved by setting to NTLM for Servers. Outlook will pass the authentication via Windows. It is the solution.

    1. Does the issue happen to your external users or internal users?
    2. For all users or some specific users?
    If the issue happens to internal users, please configure the authentication in Outlook Security tab with Negotiate Authentication to have a try.

    We have recently deployed Office 365 (We had Kerio email system previously, But we did not do a migration).
    The problem is 
    Office 365 Outlook prompts for password whenever outlook is restarted
    Tried the following workarounds, 
    1) Logon network security under More
    Settings on the Microsoft Exchange Security tab
    is set to a value other than Anonymous Authentication
    2) Tried removing the Generic Credentials from Credential manager.
    The is issue is only for some users (Majority). 
    (OS Platform: Windows 7/Windows 8).

    Hi,
    We use Exchange 2008 and Outlook 2010. For some reason, Outlook 2010 keeps prompting for password. My use entered the password and checked "Remember Password" box, but next morning when he logged in, he still got the prompt.
    I removed the Outlook credential for Outlook listed under Password Credential in Control Panel, but still no help.

    1. Open Outlook 2010. Click File>Account Settings>Account Settings. 
    2. Click the E-mail tab, click the Exchange Online mailbox, click Change…
    3. Click More Settings…. Click the Security tab, make sure the Always prompt for logon credentials box is unchecked.

    I am running Exchange 2007 Standard.  New outlook 07 clients prompt for password each time it is opened.  Older clients do not prompt for password.  Is there any way for outlook 07 to not prompt for password?  Users already logged into domain, should their credentials not be recognized automatically like with outlook 03?

    This fixed it for me.

    I was having the same issue. SBS2008, Exchange 2007. Only being prompted in Outlook 2007 clients. Tried a lot of different things to fix it, but none worked. This started happening after a round of security updates but I could not find KB2412171 on the list.
