Output card for FCP / Color

Hi there,
I'd like to get a card to monitor from within FCP and Color and just wondered which of the Blackmagic cards would work.
Thanks.

I'd check with Blackmagic on the latest sets of drivers- depends what gear you want to monitor to. In theory any of their current line except for the Intensity card would work. There's also the AJA Kona cards and IO that I hear are a bit better suited to working with Color

  • What's the best graphic card for FCP X and a Mac Pro (early) 2008?

I have a Radeon HD 3870 in my Mac Pro, it seems that I cannot use this configuration with Final Cut Pro X. Then what's the best graphic card for FCP X usable in a Mac Pro (early) 2008?
    Thx,
    Phil

You can get a 5770 radeon ATI MAC card
Avoid the 5770 cards on ebay and Amazon - many are black market or manipulated cards.
Buy it from Apple online store or B&H photo or Macconection
And in my case, I was able to sell my old 2600 XT card on ebay for $65 and put that money toward a 5770 card (Which was about $230 minus the $65)
I installed the 5770 in my early Mac Pro 2 x 2.8 and it works great

  • Best Video Output Card for AE

So I've finally decided to bite the bullet and purchase a plasma screen and video card so that clients can have a large screen on which to monitor the effects.  I'm planning to mount it over the workstation and feed it an output from...and this is where my understanding breaks down.  Should I just send it the comp window?  Will I have to render in order to have any output?   Should I send it the entirety of one of my monitors?
And most importantly, what kind of card plays nicely with AE and will feed the TV the appropriate output?  I'm assuming these should be connected through HDMI?
My current equipment is a Mac Pro and 2 Apple Cinema Displays.  Thanks in advance for your help!   Also, I'm sure many of you out there have created similar setups for client viewing.  Let me know about your experience!
    Cheers,
    Ari

Here's a glowing review of the Blackmagic Intensity Pro card:

I've used Blackmagic cards for years and can't speak highly enough about them or the company's service.  But if you want other options:
    Matrox MX02 mini
    AJA Io Express

  • HP DreamColor Monitor for FCP Color grading

Hello, apologies that I posted this question also on the beginners video forum.
I am about to get a new Mac Pro set up specifically for color grading as I am a cinematographer and need more control over small projects where there is no budget for color grading of images at professional post houses. My vendor suggests using the 24" HP DreamColor LP 2480zx monitor driven from a Black Magic Intensity Pro card using the HDMI output. I have read conflicting reports and read a huge amount on forums such as Creative Cow about this but still not convinced I can get full 30bit grading from a Mac OS X using this monitor. I am in Australia and most projects here are in PAL format in HD at 1080p25 or 50i. I use FCP 7.
    Any advice please?

are you saying I should look at Da Vinci Resolve to grade? Why?
It depends on whether you're a day-in and day-out business, and your preferred workflow. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. The Balckmagic-branded daVinci has a number of internal core processing advantages, a tracker that works, far superior color science, especially in secondary processing, but suffers from an old, "tape-to-tape" single-layer capability. However, it is truly "real-time", but that isn't as important to some.
The latest version of Resolve supports multiple-GPU processing on Mac, so the difference between the OSX offering and the much more expensive LInux may not be that great in actual performance. You can build a faster machine with more hardware.
The question... is it the software or controller that makes is (sic) so good? misses the point. Its a synergy of elements, just like good grading itself.

  • Best graphics card for FCP?

    Hi,
I have a Mac Pro with 2 x 3GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon processor, and 10 Gb Ram. I would like to get a graphics card to speed things up a bit (along with Photoshop & Aperture). Any recommendations?
Must be able to handle 2 x 30" screens.
    Regards, and thanks.

The ATI 4870 is the current card of choice for Motion and Color. No idea what it will do for you with other apps.

  • Correct way to Copy SD Card for FCP X

I have a series of SD cards that have AVCHD footage that I'll eventually ingest into FCP X. What I'd like to do is make a copy of the footage onto one of my hard drives and use that copy for Log and Transfer. I know I need make sure the file structure is unmodified, so what is the best way of doing this to make sure Log and Transfer goes properly in FCP X?

Third, and for me the easiest way:

  • HT4664 What is the best graphics card for FCPX?

In the nonstop anti-FCPX propaganda is an article of interest — posted 7/9/12 — comparing the benchmarks of FCPX and PP6.
    http://www.streamingmedia.com/Producer/Articles/ReadArticle.aspx?ArticleID=83582 &PageNum=1
The system used was a 2 x 2.93 GHz Quad-Core Mac Pro from early 2009 running MacOS X version 10.7.4 with 12 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 graphics card with 1.5 GB of onboard RAM.
In most cases PP6 outperformed FCPX with this configuration. However, in the comments Ben Balser pointed out that FCP X's A/VFoundation engine wasn't ideal on the NVIDA card:
"Quadro is actually not the best card for FCP X's A/VFoundation engine, but great for CS6's Mercury engine, so the test is amazingly flawed right there. Try both on a 5780 card and watch things drastically change. I've done that test myself. Exporting to Compressor uses a MUCH more sophisticated encoding engine meant for higher level, professional transcoding, not simple outputs, which are faster using Export Media…"
Apple lists this card on its support page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4664
    So,
What is the best graphics card for FCPX?

    Ben,
Thanks for chiming in on that article. It would be good to have a benchmark comparison with the two systems each with a preferred card.
I'm hoping to see some other comparisons on this thread. Also, some links to other articles about best practices and configurations.

  • Any suggestions RE: aftermarket cards to accelerate rendering for FCP?????

Any suggestions RE: aftermarket cards to accelerate rendering for FCP? I will be purchasing a Mac Pro system when FCP6 gets released.
I'm about to come over from Adobe Pre Pro2 & the Matrox Card(which added a tremendous amount of RT to Premiere)
What cards would you recommend to do the same in a Mac Pro?
    Are they reliable?
My budget for a card is under $2000.
One with some aditional inputs & outs wouldn't hurt but my main concern is as little rendering as possible.
I will be doing mostly DV, but within a year or so will be doing HDV.
Here's your chance to turn a PC guy,
    Steve from NY

Their cards will enable MORE effects to be RT for certain codecs, like HDV and DVCPRO HD. The 3-way color corrector is an RT effect already. But what also helps with RT effects, mainly with PiP and multi-layers is a really fast RAID array. MULTIPLE STREAMS is the term used for multiple layers of video. So with a single firewire 400 drive, you can get one stream of DVCPRO HD. But with a 5 drive RAID, you can get about 6 streams.

  • NVidia card for SDI output?

What nVidia cards are "compatible" for SDI output?  I am curious, as I have a 4000...
    Thanks,

For people that already invested in a DeckLink Studio card, would it be worthwhile to wait a little while, instead of additionally investing in a Quadro SDI? Or is the support for other output cards way down on the roadmap?

  • Converting color for fcp

I am using an image from the clients web site, that when I import to fcp, the color is completely different. I have forgotten how to change the colors for fcp.
    Any help is appreciated!
    thanks

No. FCP is a video editor. It does not do graphic colorspace format conversions - other than taking what ever material you drop into a time line and convert it to either Rec 709 for HD or Rec 601 for Standard Def.

  • How do I partition a disc with a raid card installed for fcp x and motion

    Hi,
I have just downloaded fcp x and purchased motion but have found out the drivers for my AJA io HD are not available as yet so decided to revert to FCP 6.5. My system now runs like a dog and then I discovered FCP x and Motion should be installed on a separete partition. I have a Raid card installed on my mac and the application disc disk does not enough space so do not know what I should do. Any help would be welcome.
    Noel

    Hi Mark spencer4,
The issues I have is No drivers for Aja ioHD so I cant test FCP X to see how it works. When I return to my FCP version 6 it just does not run like it used to and keeps hanging the Aja ioHD so I have to keep refreshing. My motion projects on the FCP timeline now do not open in the old version of motion so I cant round robin as before. My main disc does not have enough space to run FCP X projects and a post on Apple forum said to run FCP X and Motion on a new partition if  you still need to use FCP 6. As I have a Raid card with enough space, If I created a partition on it for fcp X and Motion 5 would FCP 6 work properly again.
I could not see how to create a partition on the Raid drive?

  • Color grading plugin for FCP?

I experience more and more problems with the Send to Shake function as time goes (FCP updates, Shake does not). Is there a good quality color correct plugin for FCP? More advanced than the standard 3-way color corrector..

Just exactly what is it you're wanting to accomplish? FCP has an amazing variety of color tools contained within it's tool set, although not nearly as surgical as Shake.
Colorista II ain't worth the money to me as it's really no different than the 3Way with the exception that you can make power windows without layering. Boris also has some sort of new 3Way corrector that if I were to buy a plug, I'd most likely get over Colorista II.

Thanks, but are these are silent?
Why do they cost over 10 x what seems available for PC?
Is it not possible to flash the cards for mac?

  • Raid card and scratch disk setup for FCP

    Hi Guys
Can anybody tell me what is the correct way to set up a raid card and scratch disk for FCP if you have 3 x 2TB internal hard drives, with the OS on HD1 and drives 2 and 3 dedicated for FCP
Also with this i also have all my documents i.e work stuff, invoices, pictures, music ect from my old windows PC and used to have them stored on HD2 with the Windows 7 OS on HD1 - i have been told that it is fine if i put this on the same drives as FCP is this correct...?
i only ask this as i have been told how to do it in different ways by 3 people......

Thanks John, although i'm rather embarrassed to admit that I am a complete newbie when it comes to technical/computer hardware terms (i.e. I have no idea about different types of disks, other than a HDD and a SSD, or even what the difference is between your media cache and a scratch disk).
This means that after reading all the links you so helpfully provided hasn't done much other than making me feel even more stupid!
The best that I can conclude from what I think that i've understood is that I will use:
Intel 530 Series 120GB SSD for O/S, Programs (and Pagefile?? No idea what this is, sorry)
Samsung 840BW 500GB - Scratch Disk (is this the media cache?) and preview
Seagate Barracuda 3TB HDD - media, projects, and exports
Please tell me if i've got something around the wrong way....
    Thanks again.

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro, 8 gb ram with a Dell 27” display and a 42” LG TV. I am thinking about upgrading the stock ATI Radeon 2600 graphics card for better resolution, preferring 2 dvi outputs or 1 dvi and 1 vga vs 1 dvi and a mini. I don't do a lot of Final Cut Pro, gaming, etc. I am interested in best value for the graphics card.
Does anyone have any suggestions on the best graphics card for these larger displays for the best value?
    Thanks,
    Kevin

I recommend you install nothing older than the Apple-firware 5770, about US$250.
RE: Mac Pro Replacement Graphics cards
    1) Apple brand cards,
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards, and
    3) "Mac Edition" cards ...
... show all the screens, including Boot up screens, Safe Mode, Installer, Recovery, debug screens, and Alt/Option boot screens. At this writing, these choices include:
    1) Apple brand cards:
    • Apple-firmware 5770, about US$250** works near full speed in every model Mac Pro, Drivers in 10.6.5
    • Apple-firmware 5870, about US$450
    2) "sold in the Apple store" cards
    • NVIDIA Quadro 4000, about US$1200
    • NVIDIA Quadro 5000, about US$2500
    3) "Mac Edition" cards -- REQUIRE 10.8.3 or later:
    • SAPPHIRE HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 MAC Edition, about US$480** Vendor recommends Mac Pro 4,1
    • EVGA GTX 680 Mac Edition, about US$600
The cards above require no more than the provided two 6-pin aux power connectors provided in the Mac Pro through 2012 model. Aux cables may not be provided for third-party cards, but are readily available.
If you are Meet ALL of these:
    • running 10.8.3 or later AND
    • don't care about "no boot screens" etc AND
    • can re-wire or otherwise "work out" the power cabling, THEN:
You can use many more cards, even most "PC-only cards"
