Output for Broadcast

What should I know in order to output for broadcast? At this point, I know it's on MPEG2. Also, what application do I need to output to MPEG2?

heee. deep breaths mate!
ok. if you really want to simulate what you'll see off air as per a 14:9 version of your master then you have to simulate what CH4 will do it ... you have to give it a 14:9 crop in a 4:3 frame.
take your 16:9 master and drop the 14:9 safe guide generator on it ... leave the guide turned on.
now nest your 16:9 master into a 4:3 sequence and blow it until the 14:9 crop area, as indicated by the blue guide, is ... cropped should be 114% or so.
turn on FCP's overlays ...see how, in this 4:3 sequence the built-in action safe and title safe overlays now overlay the burnt in guides on your nested sequence?
what you are looking at now is a shallow letterbox 14:9 cropped version of your 16:9 master. that is what CH4 will do to your 16:9 broadcast for their analog terrestrial broadcast path ... and if you kept with the title safe then your keys should be safe
if you want you can go back into your 16:9 master and disable the guide to remove the burn in on the nest, and then burn a DVD of the 4:3 (14:9) sequence. then watch it back on a 4:3 tube TV ... kind of pointless doing all this and then watching it on a 16:9 telly anyway!
by the way, a few days ago I uploaded a new version of my guides plugin for download, with a bucketload of extra controls

  • HDV mixed format editing and mastering for broadcast TV

    Hi
I have HDV blues with regards mixed format and multi time base.
Any help advice will be greatly appreciated.
I have never handled HDV in multiformat and multiple timebase to Mater and output for Broadcast television.
I am hoping to master to DVD directly on the configuration ( details provided below ) to deliver to NTSC and PAL market for DVD retail.
However I would need to take to a post house, one or more quicktime file to Output to Digital Betacam for television broadcast for both NTSC and PAL formats.
    with regards
problems I am facing are on two fronts:
    1) I am unsure of best quality and workflow to output master on Digital Betacam tape for broadcast TV in NTSC and PAL both formats.
    2) With sequence set at HDV 1080 50i, and export setting as current setting, upon render and export of self contained quicktime direct from FCP timeline I face few troubling symptoms;
    - that the quicktime exports 3mins to 35 minutes of qt clip but not the whole program of 90 minutes as one clip. System crashes and I have to reboot.
    - Another symptom is that by doing above my time line shows aduio as out of sync to video. here i see that Audio tracks A1,A2 as being torn apart at cut edit points and have gap of 1 frame at random ( but not on all edit points ).
A3, A4 and other music and sound fx tracks have slipped off sync by few frames , again at random and also other places the edit comes back in sync with audio.
    - Of course I am having to re- render this sequence timeline a zillion times even though the previously rendered files still exist in relevant folder.
    Program duration: 90 minutes
    current sequence : 1440 x 1080 at 50i
edit sequence time-line consists following source material directly ingested from tape via firewire in native HDV and DV:
    VIDEO
    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 50i
    -HDV footage of 1440 x 1080, 60i
    -PAL footage standard and widescreen
    -NTSC footage standard and widescreen
    - still images
    AUDIO
    -AUDIO is 16 bits , 48Khz
    - Voice Over is 24 bit , 48 Khz

Hi guys, thanks for getting back to me. My client has now changed her mind and so I'm just mixing XDCAM and HDV 16:9 footage which is absolutely fine. Awesome. Thanks for your help!
I have one issue - some of the XDCAM footage she has given me is .MP4 video (actually each clip is a folder with 5 files in it (.MP4, .SMI, .PPN, .XML, .BIM). Do I have to convert the .MP4 into .MOV via Compressor to work with it (presumably this will compress it somewhat) or can I convert it simply and losslessly somehow (perhaps using sony XDCAM software?)
    Thanks again for any help!

  • Outputting timecode from timeline to tape for broadcast

I need to output to tape for broadcast using specific timecode set up in the sequence from the timeline. Looking at previous posts on the subject it looks like you cannot do it, although someone says there is a workaround for a DSR11, which is the deck I use. I also have a sony DSR50 I use for recording from a Polecam if that makes a difference, although I can't see it would. I need to start the timecode from 09:58:00:00, running bars and tone and info/countdown clock etc to start the film at a timecode of 10:00:00:00 (Pal European Broadcast). Anybody have any idea of it can be done and how exactly to do it?

Now that is very helpful... had to go and search for the remote I'd never even looked at.... and I didn't even know it had a set-up menu!
However, having now set it to external TC, and tested it with a bit of video from the timeline, it does not seem to record ANY timecode at all. Instructions say the unit "records the timecode with video and audio signals input from the DV IN/OUT connector".... but I am recording using firewire. I don't have an option to record from the computer using DV in, so I'm guessing I'm stuffed?

  • About to output my first project for broadcast - thanks.

I am very happy to be in the final stages of my project, a 23'30" music show for broadcast here in the UK.
We're essentially a small group of friends, very much music fans, making it for pretty much no money, and all pretty much self taught. Although - these forums should take a lot of the credit in getting this, um, editor, from someone who can cobble together a home video, to being able to get something on air. Albeit in our own lo fi ind of way....
I've spent hours upon hours reading through these forums, not just questions I have asked, but anything and everything i come across that helps build my knowledge. And I never fail to be impressed by the knowledge and patience so many of you have - particularly you high volume posters - the Jim Cookmans, the Xs, the Andy Mees, the Jerry Hofmanns, and many more.
So I really just want to say thanks, your time helping us out is not taken for granted. Least not by me.
So to one last question, for this project anyway...
I have my bars/tone, my clocks, slugs, timecode where it should be, checked excess luma and chroma and all that. I just want to know if there are any other housekeeping type procedures I should do and get into the habit of. eg - should I remove markers from clips that are not longer needed, or collapse Video down to one track, or that kind of thing, before i send it off.
    As always any tips appreciated..
    thanks again
    Hugh

  • Clean downconversion from DVC-Pro HD to NTSC for Broadcast

We just shot some PSAs for the local DirecTV channel with the HVX200. We edited the footage in Final Cut and everything looked good. Then we downconverted the footage in Final Cut to NTSC and outputted it to DVCam. When we played it back on a TV monitor, it looked blurry and faded.
How do we maintain that clean HD look when we downconvert our footage for broadcast?
Most of the other programs shot on HD and then subsequently downconverted all have that clean professional look. Am I missing something?
    Thanks.
BTW, we shot 720P24PN straight into the P2 cards.

Most of the other programs shot on HD and then subsequently downconverted all have that clean professional look. Am I missing something?
I would hazard a guess that most of these "other programs" are not using a bundled piece of software to up/down/cross-convert their HD video.
    Look into hardware conversion.

  • Cheapest video output for monitoring

    Hi
I currently have my final cut pro setup to output via firewire through my panasonic video camera and to my monitor.
I've decided its time to liberate the camera, and perhaps get something dedicated for conversion.
I don't need much, I'm not editing for broadcast or anything - just viewing dv through firewire mostly.
Is a canopus 110 the cheapest simplest way to go, or is there something else I haven't heard of?
    Cheers,
    Chris

Chris, there will always be something 'cheaper', perhaps something from Pyro, or you could undoubtedly find a no name brand that may even be the same product without the badge ... however, I would vouch for the Canopus ADVC110 as a robust device with a deserved reputaion for quality.
    Cheers

  • Best compression for broadcast video

    Hi
I need to compress a very short piece for broadcast (5 sec, no audio). What is the best compression to keep it around 25Mb?

It should be. 5 seconds at DV should be 125MB.
If you have to get under 25MB, then I'd suggest getting into h.264. It should give you a very good output at 25MB, though of course not the same as DV.
If you do use a different coded make sure to do it from a QT reference movie so your material doesn't get an extra DV compression.

  • Exporting Video B-Roll for Broadcast Use

    Hello:
What format should I export my b-roll video in from an event? We're distributing it online via a download link but I want this file to be as easy for reporters to use as possible.
Can someone explain the best process/format to export this in?
Will Quicktime be best? If so what options do I need to select to keep the file large enough for broadcast use yet compressed enough to send via YouSendIt?

Thanks. This might be a stupid question but how can I convert the output Quicktime from FCE to a MPG2? Are there any settings I need to check off?

  • Downconverting 1920x1080i 50 HD to SD for broadcast

I am shooting and editing a programme in 1920 x 1080i 50 (PAL) using Sony EX3's and have to downconvert that for broadcast (720x576 anamorphic). I was told by a Sony specialist to simply edit the imported files as they come in after being wrapped as .mov files, which I have done very easily, running up to 8 streams in a multicam edit. I was then advised to drop the finished sequence into an SD timeline, drop a "shift fields" filter on to it to switch from the upper field to lower field dominance and render out before outputting to tape.
This however does not work.......it does not resolve the interlacing in my output monitor. I output the file as a quick time at the current settings, then imported that into compressor to try and convert it to SD that way, but the preview window shows a huge amount of interlacing artefacts in the right hand pane. I only have two weeks before the shoot and edit and this is making me nervous.
I am shooting motorsport events for TV so have to shoot interlaced footage as progressive does not seem to work too well with fast moving images.
Any suggestions? I don't have a capture card and will be editing out to tape, although I can send the file to the broadcaster by ftp. There must be a simple answer to this, but the shift fields option does not seem to be a solution.

So the Sony specialist was particularly upbeat about the Sony codec .. hardly surprising eh?
+The xdcam ex codec does not require rendering when imported into the timeline+
Indeed it does not +for playback+ ... but if you do anything whatsoever to your raw footage, +even changing the in or out point+ then it will need to be conformed before export (ie rendered) because editing with your Long GOP based MPEG HD footage changes the GOP structure of that footage and therefore that GOP structure which will need to be rebuilt for output. Needless to say, recompression from/to a lossy codec is never normally considered a good thing, and although your Sony rep may have waxed lyrical, the truth of the matter is that there is a quality loss. Whether that loss of quality is something you are concerned about is entirely your decision ... my suggestions to you were intended to be helpful in allowing you to preserve the maximum quality of your source whilst offering the best performance for your system. If you don't care to hear such advice that is entirely your decision.
+The point about edius is ...+
So use Edius mate, you are really very welcome to it, and you can set yourself up with a very nice Edius 5 / HD Storm system for an attractively low price.
+Can I export a finished sequence back to an sxs card?+
If you have installed Sony's XDCAM Transfer app then you can use the Export > Sony XDCAM... option in your FCP Export menu to export your piece back to your SxS card.
Or instead of handing it off to your buddy you might try just changing your External Video / Video Playback option to output Apple Firewire and take FCP's realtime downconversion from the EX timeline straight to your firewire deck. Probably not great quality by that method tho. Or you could equip your Mac with the necessary I/O hardware to do the job ... such as a Matrox/Blackmagic/AJA/Motu device.

  • Is fxLegalizeNTSC trustworthy to keep color safe for broadcast?

Cutting a promo for broadcast and I just want to make sure that fxLegalizeNTSC at the top of the stack will keep color in safe regions.

ON first establishing a relationship with a b-cast entity, get their specific requirements for codecs/standards/formats & etc and then do a SHORT sample of the kind of footage/subject you'll be shipping them. Send it to their QC types to load onto their system and make sure it meets their specs. Adjust as necessary from there. Some folks around here have complete editing production setups with separate vid cards for b-cast monitors all designed to be calibrated to spec. They pretty much know that what signal they put out WILL match any particular given need. They still always send a test to any new service they deliver to.
For the rest of us, running less-"enhanced" equipment, but still calibrated to consistency, such tests are also needed ...  and again, modify the outputs according to the feedback you get.
It's simply kind of scary to expect to send b-cast ready material to a network/service that you haven't worked with before ... it might fly, but if it doesn't, wow ... not good. I know my screen is calibrated for rec709, and most of what I do goes to dvd's for clients to have a personal items or to the web for short fun promo pieces. Neither is nearly as critical as delivering content for a network b-cast, but I still have tested on various types of tv's for the dvd's, and through various web players for the web-deliverable material. Though those two 'streams' of viewing have rather wide possible individual ... projection, what do we call it these days? ... still, I note the range of visual results and set a seemingly middle-course set of output criteria so the content looks at least decent over most equipment it will be viewed on. I've had a couple guys what deliver all their material for tv stations & networks ... who find their output needs vastly simpler than mine as they can just set their calibration and when it's on, it's on. I have to ... guesstimate ... at times.
But then most of my clients are NOT as critical of optical senses as you'll find in many professional b-cast centers.

  • 720pn 24 to D1 for broadcast...

What is the exact step-by-step workflow for ingesting 720 24pn from an HVX200, into FCP and down convert to D1 for broadcast.
I did a search but all I found was 720 24p to DVD.
    Thanks in advance,
    E.C.

First off, you cannot output to D1 without a capture card. The only formats you can output without a card are DV, HDV, XDCAM and DVCPRO HD. All other formats require a capture card.
Second, D1 has not been the industry standard for 8-10 years now. Digibeta is the high end SD format of choice....HOWEVER...who are you outputting this for? Did they require a D1? Or did you just assume that they'd want a D1 master? Never assume. Dangerous.

  • CANCEL_FLAG in PO Output for Communication

I'm trying to build logic into an RTF template for the "PO Output for Communication" report to handle cancelled lines. The cancel_flag can be set to "Y" at any of 3 levels - PO Header, PO Line and PO shipment. The field is called the same thing (cancel_flag) at all 3 levels.
In my rtf template, I have a row in a table to display each PO line using the for-each clause. I do not want to display lines which are cancelled (ie where CANCEL_FLAG (at line level) = 'Y'.
How do I reference the CANCEL_FLAG specifally at line level (not header, and shipment line)??

I'm really stumped. I tried using the choose when clause but it doesn't work as I think it isreading the wrong cancel flag.
Any help will be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Ash

have to see your for-each statements.
and you can do it, by using .. to go up one level
example from current level to go up4 level up ../../../../CUSTOM_FLAG
    ../../../CUSTOM_FLAG three lvl up.
Need to know the cancel_flag element you said, i can see only one :) in the given xml.

  • Cancel_flag in PO Output for Communication report

I'm trying to build logic into an RTF template for the "PO Output for Communication" report to handle cancelled lines. The cancel_flag can be set to "Y" at any of 3 levels - PO Header, PO Line and PO shipment. The field is called the same thing (cancel_flag) at all 3 levels but it doesn't always exist at all 3 levels. What do I call the field in my "IF" statement, so that it is looking at the correct field? Right now, if I am at the line level and I want to check the cancel_flag, if it doesn't exist, it looks at the cancel_flag at the shipment level.
