Output MacMini to TV
I am trying to play 1920x1080 output from FCE via new MacMini (2.0 GHz, 1GB)to TV set. I am not having much luck. Trying to output several different formats, including AIC, but not much luck. Is anyone doing this? If so, what is your setting - Formats, network, MacMini H/W setup? Trying couple of methods: A - stream from the iMac I use for editing, but the network link is obviously slow (wired 100G ethernet) and the display freezes a bit. Will Gbit network upfate be sufficient? Method B: transfer the outputs to the MacMini HDD, but again, no matter what the format type, the display is "jerky". Maybe the mini is too weak, maybe the format I am setting is wrong. It all displays o.k. on the original iMac, but it is 2.66GHz, 4GB based and has smaller display, which doesn't display the artifacts as much. I am tryin got use QT-pro for playback. Any suggestion would be appreciated.
For those interested, the system is now complete. Unfortunately, it does not involve Mac Mini (at least not at the moment). The mini cannot play Blu-ray rate HD video, until most likely the Snow Leopard gets released, when it should be able to use the graphics adapter's hardware acceleration. The current solution involves PS3, which is powerful enough to decode all the 1080 HD I could throw at it, with power to spare, and it's output looks better on HDTV. I loaded S/W called MediaLink on the iMAC. That adds uPnP capabilities to the iMAC, so that I can now share any files from the iMAC with the PS3, including iTunes library, iPhoto, Apperture, and any file. I load the BD outputs from the Toast (1920x1080i60) as if for Blu-ray burning onto a hard drive associated with the iMac and share it no the network to play it. Wired ethernet is plenty fast, but my WiFi is limited to about 6 Mbits at the moment, so I could either limit the Toast output bandwith, speed up the WiFi or use wired. I chose wired at the moment and will update to 802.11n wireless router, so that I can get at least 25Mbit avg. throughput for the 1080i60 video stream. So remote iMAC data in HD can be done without shuttling discs or drives between locations in the house at Blu-ray quality. Plus we can share music, pictures, rent movies, etc. etc.- all the multimedia resources of the iMac are available at the TV location.

MacMini Output to Vizio 42" LCD TV
I recently purchased a Vizio 42"LCD 1080p set and have been having issues with my MacMini displaying on the TV. I cannot get the video output to the set no matter what I try. I've even tried my Corei7 Macbook Pro and still nothing. I have tried both the mini display port and the mini dvi on the MacMini. There have been moments where I've got the picture to flicker on and the TV actually registers in the display preferences but nonetheless still nothing. I've tried 480p all the way up the 1080p setting. I've tried different cables and all I can think of. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm running 10.6.5 on both machines and have tried cleaning both systems still to no avail. Thanks for your help and hope this problem can be solved.
David-
Thanks for the help. I've tried 3 different cables so not sure its the cable...I guess it could be but 3 bad cables would be odd. When I did get the TV to appear in both the display options and in SwitchRes I was of course able to choose a variety of resolutions and I tried all ranging from 480 to 1080p. Of course they would work but then shortly the monitor went offline and that was it.
Maybe you could help me a bit in SwitchRes. As of right now my monitor just says "Unknown Monitor" I tried creating custom resolutions but cannot choose them probably because it doesn't know the monitor??? Not sure I guess on how you exactly force the monitor to choose the preset you created. Anyway you could tell me where and how you made this work within that program? What about the 1.3a HDMI toggle does that have anything to do with the issue? I just find it weird that no mac I hook up to the TV is responding no matter what variation I try. The good thing is that SwitchRes does recognize something is plugged into the Mini unlike the Apple Display Preferences. Either way really appreciate the help. Hope I can get this sorted. -
My macmini won't output to any display since reinstalling and upgrading to maverick
I recently wiped my macmini and when I reinstalled it, it upgraded to maverick.
Now it won't output to any display. When I first installed it, I managed to get it to work once after turning it on and off several times.
I've tried connecting to both a tv and a monitor, using both display port and hdmi connections.
ive done all these:
Reset the computer's parameter RAM.
Reset the computer's PMU.
If you have an Intel-based Mac mini, reset the SMC.
Still nothing...
does anyone have any suggestions?Does anything show when booting up?
When starting in Safe Mode?

If still problem, make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

Hi,
I've read many threads about people having issues with VGA monitors (via mini display port adapters) going blank. It seems to be when booting, coming out of sleep mode and when changing resolution. It also seems to be intermitant. The VGA output goes blank, but the monitor still recognises that it is attached and the Mac Mini recognises the monitor. The tempory solution is to pull out the display port adapter, wait, then plug in again (every single time this happens!).
I am having exactly these issues and am using a Dell E173FP monitor.
Can I ask:
1) Has anyone taken their MacMini back, got a replacement and found the issue has gone away?
2) Does anyone have a 2011 Mac Mini working reliably with VGA?
3) Has anyone got any response from Apple on the issue? (I saw the firmware update, but it won't run on my Mac Mini, I suspect because I've already installed all the latest updates)
thanks
Pauli have my new mid 2011 mac mini hooked with a Samsung VGA monitor, it works perfectly fine. it is connected via a mini display port to VGA adaptor which had to be purchased seperately. Mine used to go when coming out of sleep mode.
Then i had made some changes in the energy saver mode with help of the Apple technical support on call. I remember that he asked me to delete the library files which saved my earlier energy saving settings. I don't exactly remember the folder, so i don't want suggest any wrong folder unknowingly as fiddling around with library files can be detrimental.
Call support and ask them how to fix it. -
MacMini output at 30hz???
I have a MacMini that used to be in my carputer install http://www.avidanross.com/main.php?g2_itemId=596
Unfortunately, that car was totalled. Fortunately, insurance helped me pay for an M3, with Nav. So, with the nav, I have decided to go fully OEM on this install. I found a group in Germany that created a VGA->NAV converter. The issue I have encountered with this conversion box is the very specific resolution required.
Here is what happened.
CarMES (the converter) has instructions on using PowerStrip for windows (http://www.carmes.de/download/ebas/CIBIGEN.pdf)
Following the resolution instructions, I attempted to use DisplayConfigX and SwitchResX to force the resolution, but because the convertor does not broadcast EDID information, the monitor registered as non-existant.
So, I turned to the gHead II from Dr. Bott. Here
The gHead solved the EDID information, as the Mac Mini was able to output resolutions even though os x thought there was no monitor. But, the ghead only offered an 800x600 resolution. I needed an 800x480.
I contacted Dr. Bott, and they were amazing. They custom designed a new gHead adapter for me with 800x480 as a supported resolution. The new adapter was shipped to me, and yes, it had the correct resolution, but the engineers said they couldnt get the refresh rate down to 30hz.
So here I am, I can output 800x480, but cant get the refresh down low enough. Is this a limitation of the Mac Mini? Has anyone been able to get the refresh that low? Am I out of luck? Will I have to go back to winblows? Someone, anyone, ideas?Absolutely!

Is there an optical sound output on MacMini?
Is it possible to get sound output via an optical cable from Macmini?
Hi,
Single combined "audio line out/headphone minijack (digital/analog).
http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/mac_mini/specs/mac-mini-core-i7-2.6-late-2 012-specs.html
Headphone out/optical audio out port
The headphone/line out port accommodates digital optical audio output, analog audio output with a 24-bit, 44.1-192 kHz D/A converter, digital audio output up to 24-bit stereo and 44.1-192 kHz sampling rate and supporting encoded digital audio output (AC3 and DTS). For analog headphone / line output, use a standard audio cable with 3.5mm metal plug. For digital audio, you can use Apple iPhone headset with microphone or a standard TOSLINK cable with a TOSLINK mini-plug adapter.

Dual use audio output HDMI and Headphone Jack on MacMini 2010
I am trying to use both the digital HDMI and analog headphone jack at the same time. My indoor home theater system use the HDMI and my outdoor amp and speakers are linked to the analog headphone jack.
Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to get both to work simultaneously like I had on my AppleTV. I was actually using the toslink and the HDMI on the ATV.
Anyone have any luck getting both outputs to feed at the same time, maybe by 3rd party software, on the Mac Mini 2010see this discussion: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2499492&tstart=15.

Want 2.1 output from my MacMini via HDMI
Does anyone know if I can set my mac mini to output 2.1 rather than 5.1 when using the HDMI output?
I only have a right, left and subwoofer is this room.
Thanxwhat app / software are you using? some preferences can specify the number of channels.
and what are you outputing, a movie?
do you have an a/v receiver?
sometimes i watch a movie through hdmi and toslink the sound directly to the receiver, for 5.1
then play a game, same setup, but indicate to the receiver, stereo. (which puts out 2.1 (on all 5 speakers, or 2 in your case)) -
Looking for a simple app that can output 8 channels simultaneously.
Hello esteemed audio community.
I have to create a little effect for an upcoming party. For this I have created the following audio tracks in Garage Band:
- 4 separate audio channels (stereo front and stereo rear)
- one mono combination of these four tracks (to drive a Light organ gizmo - makes the light flicker with the audio)
- and finally two separate tracks with simple 1Khz pulses to trigger relays for a fog machine.
I now need to be able to play these 7 tracks simultaneously and send them to different amplifiers and relays. So I need two things: 1) a software that can play them and 2) a hardware interface that can take these 7 channels out of the computer and convert them to line levels analog signals.
I thought this would be pretty straight forward but it turns out that it is not, unless you want to throw $$$ at it which I really can't afford.
Software wise, unfortunately, GB can only output 2 audio channel at one time. So I need to find a little app that can offers multitrack output. Ideally it would some shareware thing that would allow me to load in up to 8 tracks saved from GB, adjust their individual levels and then output them.
Second issue is hardware. Here I have found the M-Audio 410 firewire. This box will take up to 10 audio "returns" and output them to analog. They can be found used for about $150. So I think this might work.
Budget for this setup is very limited, hopefully no more than $150. Quality does not have to be very high although a good bass response will be important for the effect. I don't need any recording. Only playback.
Would any one have any suggestion on how to best accomplish this? If this software does not exist, how complicated would it be to write it? Would Applescript be useful for this? All it needs to do is read 8 audio files (2 minutes max), allow me to adjust their level and output all 8 at the same time.
Thank you very much for any help.
BoAh. I'm surprised, but there we go.
Have a look here ...

(courtesy of googling 'OSX free multitrack recording software')
Didn't have time to do more than skim, but 'Ardour' looked promising. Protools is the only one I've used, the full product is one of the industry standards, but the free 'lite' version listed here seems to be limited to 2 in/out as well.
Referring to your original post, I'd think trying to write or 'script' something would be a nightmare ... synchronisation of streams within something like Applescript would be a major issue, quite apart from anything else.

Apple TV2 missing analog audio output for multi-zone system
Found out the hard way that most receivers can't support digital audio in multiple zones (i.e., Zone 2). Since Apple TV2 (ATV2) dispensed with any analog output, if you have a whole-house system that depends on mult-zone to distribute audio to various speakers, you won't be able to use ATV2 to stream music to anything other than Zone 1. The only outputs are HDMI and optical (both digital audio). I think I found a work around (which, of course costs more money) which is a "de-embedding" device from Atlona that takes HDMI in and splits out the audio to analog and passes the HDMI through to the receiver. The analog audio output then lets me connect to the analog in on the receiver so it can stream to all zones. I figure Apple just didn't have enough real estate on the new product to make room for analog, but it's a pain. Hope this helps someone. If anyone knows a better work-around, I'd love to hear it.
I have the same issue with a MacMini I use for music. My solution was to use an inexpensive optical splitter - one feed to the optical input of my receiver and the second to a DAC. Then run standard RCA audio cables from the DAC to the analog Zone 2 inputs.
Here is a link for a DAC
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?cid=104&cp_id=10423&cs_id=1042302&pid=6884&seq=1&format=2
They should have the splitter as well. -
How to stop my macmini going to sleep?
My late 2010 macmini 4,1 has a habbit of falling asleep at the utter worst times and randomly. It is a little unusual in that it is used as a HPTV, with a Panasonic LED TV attached over HDMI, an Apple bluetooth keyboard and a Microsoft bluetooth mouse. Networking is via Ethernet on a static IP. The problem happens with all powersaving options set to "never"...
OS is 10.7.2. It will enter sleep mode right in the middle of typing on the keyboard, or when playing a video etc. Obviously this is annoying. Kernel log output is:

I've googled about and there seems to be some reports of this kind of issue back through the years, but no firm answered. Issue for me is I'm worried it is a hardware problem. I still have a month or so of guarantee left and wonder if I should take it into the store to get it swapped out?
I have a similar setup at work with a 4,1 mini, running 10.6 with a wired keyboard and bluetooth magic mouse, on a Dell TFT and that machine has no issues with sleep whatsoever.
Ideally I'd like to leave powermamanget enabled so it falls asleep after, say, 3 hours of being idle. But failing that I would settle for it NEVER falling asleep.
LawrenceI have not found a definite answer but the following article might be of interest http://hintsforums.macworld.com/showthread.php?t=95016 this suggests the sleep cause 5 (a postive number) suggests the computer received a normal request to sleep.
I would suggest trying to reset PRAM and the SMC, if possible try running temporarily from a different hard disk (to eliminate a software problem).

AU Lab running on MacMini keeps crashing on launch.
I am running AU Lab on a MacMini running an up to date instance of Mavericks. AU Lab was running fine until Sunday when it crashed. Since then it has consistenly generated the same error report, attached below. I have uninstalled the 3rd party plugins, and I uninstalled and reinstalled AU Lab, including a clean download from a second computer transfered to the offending Mini and installed after removing AU Lab rebooting and then extracting and installing from the clean download. I have an identical system I downloaded and installed AU Lab on and it runs fine. I'm baffled at this point, I've done everything I know how, permission repairs, disk verify, etc. everything else on the system runs fine its only AU Lab and nothing changed on the system between Saturday and Sunday when the first crash occured.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2. -
Considering a Dell U2711 for MacMini Server
Hi All,
I am planning to buy a MacMini Server to go with my Dell U2711 Display.
I am a bit confused regarding the means of connecting the Display to MacMini for running at 2560 x 1440 resolution.
Apple tells on MacMini specifications page, that output through HDMI is limited to 1920-by-1200.
That said, I am left with the "Thunderbolt" way to achive the native resolution of 2560 x 1440, right?
So, what cable should I use to connect the display through thunderbolt port?
Some articles suggest using the so called "Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI" Cable to do that, but then isn't is a misleading naming for a thunderbolt cable?
I would expect something like a "Thunderbolt to Dual Link DVI" cable.
Thanks!Iam buying this model, have tou tried 1080p videos external monitors anf full hd flash videos from vimeo?
please let me know

Just though I should fill in a bit here, as I have now bought this laptop and running Arch 64bit on it. So if any other users are considering this laptop, here are a few lines about it:
I have it up and running with LUKS disk encryption, everything works fine so far. I'm running XFCE with just a minor problem that the bottom panel is kinda blinking 3 or 4 times right after boot. Havn't tested webcam nor bluetooth, but sound and everything else seems to work fine.
Two of my biggest problems were to get the wifi up and running and to get an acceptable performance when viewing videos in full screen. As for the wifi; just me not understanding that I needed a kernel module AND a firmware.. (If someone wants to fill me in on why we need a firmware AND a kernel module/ driver, I'd be glad.) I installed the iwlwifi-5000-ucode without knowing I also needed the iwlagn module too. After that was fixed, I am now using network manager with no problems.
I have also had some problem with the Radeon 3670. The performance was bad in full screen videos when I used the xf86-video-radeonhd. (I followed arch wiki). It didn't help to use vide-ati neither, and no settings in the xorg.conf did fix my problem. I also noticed that DRI was failing in xorg.log. After alot of trying I decided to try the git-versions which are found in the AUR. I'm happy to say that I can now watch 720 (the only video resolution I have tried yet) with acceptable quality
All in all, I'm quite happy with the computer so far. A bit warm maybe. Oh, and the screen (full HD version) is SOO nice :-) -
Can a PC with a Displayport output use a 27" iMac as a monitor?
Hi,
I've asked a couple questions in the past week because I'm trying to find a solution for my office. (each one of my ideas unfortunately turns out not to work)
I need a PC for some business things I do, I have an old PC but it works fine for what I need it for.
If I buy a video card that had a displayport output, could I plug it into a new 27" iMac to use it as a monitor?
(My current video card only has a DVI & VGA output, unless an adapter would work with it?)
I really want an iMac, and would rather not use parallels or Vmware or bootcamp (if possible) because I have a lot of data on my PC.
Thanks in advance for any advice,
ScottOk... Foiled again...
Thank for the Quick Reply.
Looks like I'm going to have to squeeze two monitors on my desk, (or maybe I'll buy the 21" imac and save some space)
Or maybe I'll buy a nice Dell monitor (with a lot of inputs) and just buy a Macmini (especially if they upgrade to haswell because the graphics are supposed to be much better. (and the mini's don't have dedicated GPU's)
Thanks again.
