You can play a sound in a surround-system. However, Java Sound API has some restrictions.
1, It does not play multi-channel format.
2, It does not support speaker channel assignment. That means you can not choose a certain speaker channel to play.
So overall, it can play a sound format which is either one or two channels in a multi-channel system.

Is there any way to use the Java Sound API (without any extensions/plugings etc) to play audio on a surround-system (e.g., a 5.1 capable soundcard)? If not, are there any Java API that provides this feature?

  • No multi-channel available with HDMI output in Audio MIDI Setup on Macbook Air mid-2011 !!!!!!!

    Hi everybody !
I am currently facing some problem with seting up a surround sound system.
I looked everywhere on the web but i couldn't find any proper answer to this problem.
To sum up, i want to have a Dolby Digital or DTS surround sound when i'm playing a movie (with an AC3 audio track obviously).
I have a Macbook Air 13" Core i7 connected to a SAMSUNG Plasma TV via an iWires thunderbolt -> HDMI cable (bought on the same time as the MBA). This TV is connected to an amp via an optical cable and this amp to a 5.1 system.
When i am going to Audio MIDI Setup to configure the HDMI output, i cannot select any multi-channel option, only stereo !!!!
Is someone has any idea how to solve this problem ? I am struggling a lot and spent hours on that without finding any solutions !
Thanks a lot for your time !

    Hello ckkzzzle,
I was looking into the issue you are describing and think I have a great article to help troubleshoot it. The article is called Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays found here: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1573.
Start here, and work your way down as needed:
    Check connections
When using an external display be sure to check the following:
If you're using an Apple notebook, confirm the AC power cable or adapter is securely connected to the computer and the cable providing power to the display is also secure. It is always good to have your notebook connected to AC power when an external display is in use.
Confirm display adapters are fully seated in their respective connections and that they are supported models and for the computer and display. Refer to these articles to assist you with adapter compatibility and further configuration information:
    Monitor and Display Adapter Table
About Mini DisplayPort to HDMI adapters
Apple Mini DisplayPort adapters: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Thunderbolt ports and displays: Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
Remove all display cable extenders, KVM switches, or other like devices and retest to determine if the issue is resolved.
If more than one video adapter is in use—or "daisy-chained"—troubleshoot by using only one adapter.
Example: A mini DisplayPort to DVI adapter connected to a DVI to HDMI adapter is an unsupported configuration because there is a series of adapters in use.
If available, try using a different display and or adapter (or use a different connector by using DVI instead of VGA, for instance).
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Multi-Channel output audio from Quick Time (or iTunes)

    Hello all,
I am trying to get multi-channel AC3 audio output from QT and can only get two channel stereo. I have seen lots of related posts but can't quite get it.
I am trying to configure a Mac Mini to output properly via the TOS link port to my audio system. I get surround sound fine playing a DVD but not when playing a .m4v file that does give me surround sound when played on my Apple TV.
    Should this be possible?

I appreciate the link Brent! I also had someone point me here http://fplanque.com/dev/mac/ac3-ac-3-5-1-surrond-sound-apple-mac-osx and all is good now.
    Thanks!

  • Multi channel audio outputs from a laptop such as 5.1 or 7.1

is it possible to get multi channel audio outputs from a laptop such as 5.1 or 7.1 for watching Movies or television while using Windows media Center.

Ok so i order to help anyone who is interested.
The only ironic solution to this problem i found was to use a plugin called xto7 to convert the xml to the old fcp7 format.
i then imported this into premiere pro.
this was then able to export an OMF that when imported into logic 10 that was using the correct 6ch mono setting as separate tracks.
Insane but it works until Apple fixes the incorrect meta data import in FCPX that sets the xml export to the default import that is always surround.
this is the only way i was able to send stems with all the edit points and fades for the sound editor.
If you don't have premiere lying around you maybe able to do it with fcp7 too we just didn't have it in this studio.
Fingers crossed Apple fixes the fcpx xml export.

  • QT Audio = Multi Channel options. Any diference between them?

I see alot of options for the quicktime audio channel catagory but most of them look sort of the same.
For example, if I had a file with 4 channels of audio (shot on a multi-channel audio camera), which option should I use so that the compressed file has 4 channels of audio? Would it make a difference if i used quardraphnoic or 'L R Ls Rs'?

Four discrete channels as encoded by Dolby DIgital is discrete "quadraphonic" and the same as L, R, Ls, Rs
(for those unfamiliar with the term "quadraphonic" look at this • Wiki page)
Encoding suggestions in Compressor 2.1 and higher:
"Import Surround Sound Group" in the "File" menu
(or click the little speaker icon to the right of the name field in the Batch window).
Assign your four audio files (48KHz, 16bit format) as desired to the L, R, Ls, and Rs inputs.
    Click OK.
From "Settings" menu, "Audio Formats" choose Dolby 5.1
In the "Inspector" window in the "Audio Coding Mode" drop down menu
    choose 2/2 (L, R, Ls, Rs)
Uncheck (turn off) "Enable Low Frequency Effects"
    Set "Dialog Normalization" to -31
Choose the "Preprocessing" tab and for "Compression Preset" chose "None"
To save a copy of your preset click the "save as" button.

  • Outputting 5.1 Channel Surround Sound from your Mac

How to output 5.1 Channel Surround Sound from you Mac...

I have been using my MacBook Pro via HDMI into my pioneer av amp which is set up for 5.1.
I have been able to output 5.1 audio with Logic Pro and FCPX no issues at all after you setup the audio midi utility for 5.1. This setup is via PCM 5.1 audio not to be confused with Dolby 5.1.
It works great. If you want to play your edited exported movies from Final Cut Pro x in surround then it gets a bit tricky. I export the movie with FCPX as master video with the 5.1 audio then use HandBreak set to atv3 to encode / compress the video. This is great because handbreak folds the 5.1 into a stereo AAC track and also encodes the 5.1 mix into Dolby 5.1 AC3 track so both stereo and surround tracks are embedded in the movie file. So if you have an Apple TV it will play the movie with its surround track. If you play the same HandBreak compressed movie out of your Mac via hdmi to your surround amp it will only play the stereo track if you are using iTunes or QuickTime  and I believe this is because of copy protect and Dolby license issues. iTunes will play a purchased movie from the itunes store in surround via your Macs hdmi to receiver setup but will only play the stereo track of the movie you exported from HandBreak even though it is set up just like an iTunes movie. To get your HandBreak movie to play in Dolby surround from your Mac all you need is VLC player, then you have to go in and select the Dolby track and the output in VLCs audio settings and bingo your HandBreaked movie then plays out of your Mac in Dolby surround. Once you set your Mac up for 5.1 mixing your amp will show your outputting 5.1 via the mac but again this is PCM audio 5.1 and apps like FCPX, Soundtrack Pro, Logic Pro will work.

  • How to building a multi-channels analog output task in visual c++ 6.0 (without Measurement Studio)?

    Hello!
I have a PCI 6251 card, and using DAQmx C function to generate a wavwform. (single channel ).
But, how to creating a multi-channels analog output task, and had a different frequence in each channels?
    Thanks.

This is getting to be a common question!
    The answer is, you can't.
If the rates have common factors, you can use a higher overall rate. The slower waveform will simply have extra points in it to make up for the higher update rate.

  • Multi channel audio output

i am trying to output a wav file from a avi file.
this file has multi channel audio, in this case 4 channels, though when outputting the audio by
After Effets, mono or stereo is the only available choice.
In this case, which channel will be extracted from the avi file?

I'm 99% sure that only the first 2 channels will be imported. I've seen some weirdness where multichannel audio has been bounced to a stereo pair on import causing a jump in levels. Your best bet is to use Soundbooth (or Premiere) or an audio/editing app to do the conversion.

  • Multi channel audio not exporting from fcpx xml as mono to logic always comes in a mixed surround

I have a long edit cut with 24 bit multi channel wav files (i.e 6 microphones on separate tracks but in a single wav file.)
This is very a very common production practice.
when i import into fcpx it defaults to seeing the files as surround. I change this to mono so i can mix and spit the audio between each mic.
The last step in the edit is to hand the mix off to the sound designer in logic.
however no matter how i export the xml file for logic. it always comes in as a surround file again instead of mixed mono files.
it shows up in logic as 6 tracks but all but generally only the top track has a mono mix of all 6 and the rest are blank.
it shows that all 6 are seen as 5.1 surround indicated by the icon.
interestingly if i just import the file directly into logic it comes in as 6 mono files. (the icon for mono showing and all are separate microphones)
Any ideas on how to get fcpx not to export the audio xml as surround? (it seems that it is locked to that on import no matter how i modify after)

Ok so i order to help anyone who is interested.

  • Multi-channel audio play

I want to play one or more simultaneous sources to each of several stereo outputs.
So either a multi-channel soundcard (eg 5.1, 7.1) or several cards, or even several multi-channel cards.
As far as I understand it the multi-channel cards are made up of several stereo channels (main, surround, centre etc).
I want to play different sound files (or even several files simultaneously) on EACH of these stereo outputs.
Just to prove that I am completely crazy, the reasoning behind this lunatic requirement is that the loudspeakers are all mounted under a model railway layout, and are to be used to create ambiance.
Clearly I cannot use the Java Sound Engine mixer as that can only drive the primary output.
I have searched several code examples on sun, and on jsresources but cannot find anything that uses m ultiple simultaneous outputs.
Can anyone point me at any useful starting point.
    Many thanks,
    Howard Amos

You are looking to do SPDIF passthrough.........
If you have that option in your DVD software you need to be sure you are passing the signal through untouched. There is a post of how to do this on the shark007.net forum,
    http://shark007.net/forum/Thread-problem-spdif-passthrough-x-fi-decoder-Win7
and make sure that in PowerDVD or WinDVD or whatever player you are using, that SPDIF passthrough is selected. If you have Dolby digital or DTSConnect enabled you are sending a signal and encoding it, when your receiver is the device that wants to decode it.

  • AAC and multi-channel audio

Can AAC be used to encode multi-channel audio, such as DTS-HD Master Audio?
DTS-HD Master Audio is an optional audio format in Blu-Ray. It uses lossless compression.
There are other audio formats from Dolby Digital, for example, that are used to encode HD audio in Blu-Ray. Can AAC be used to encode those as well, without any loss of information?
Is there any work in progress to make HD audio such as DTS-HD Master Audio available discretely on disc, like what the older DVD-Audio format made possible for 5.1 channel surround sound on disc?
    Thanks.

What adjustments do you want to make?

  • Multi Channel Input on Recei

    http://img202.imageshack.us/img202/586/5pchinputlarge9cj.jpg[/img] width="300" alt="Image Hosted by ImageShack.us" >
Ok I know that for the front and rear I would use a 3.5mm stereo to RCA but for the center/sub channel what should I use? Should it be a 3.5mm mono to RCA or something different or can it be a regular stereo red and white one?
Btw how much does this degrade the quality of the sound? I hoping that this method with the multi channel inputs and nice home theater speakers sounds better than a PC speaker system like the 5500.

My setup is similar to yours.
    - I have the 5. channel analog outputs of my X-Fi goes to the 5. multi-channel inputs of my preamp-processor. This setup alllow me not only to play my ripped music in 5. also allows me to play DVD-audio disc. You can also play DTS/DD encoded movies as well as long as you set the DD/DTS decoding option to off (internal decoding) in the creative console mixer.
Advantage: Can use the X-Fi CMSS-3D to get 5./7/ expansion
2- I also have the SPDIF output of the X-Fi goes to one digital coax input of my preamp-processor. This setup gives me the same processing as the above except the playback of DVD-audio disc.
Disadvantage: SPDIF will ouput only in stereo, you will need to use the receiver processing modes(Dolby prologic I/II, Neo6, Stereo 5/7) to get 5./7. expansion
For me connection 2 is the better choice for playback mode except DVD-audio, the reason is my preamp processor is a $4K unit with the highest (Audiophile) quality DACs, plus I have the flexibility of setting the bass-management of this unit independently. Plus, I have a multitude of processing modes on this unit such as : DPL-IIx, Neo-6, 5./7. Music etc... to expand a 2 channels signal into 5./7.
I can see you have a digital coax input on your receiver, just buy a mono 3.5mm to coaxial convertor. Connect the 3.5mm SPDIF end to the X-FI SPDIF flexi-jack, and the Coax digital end to your receiver Digital coax in. With this connection you need to set DD/DTS decoding on the X-Fi to ON (External decoder).

  • Multi Channel Delivery

    Hi All Experts,
We are trying to evaluvate Oracle Documaker 12.0 and were sucessfull in most of the part.
    One question remains unsolved.
Does Oracle Documaker (12.0) support multi channel delivery? One of the customers require output to be in the format of PDF, Print, Email ( until this it seems ok), SMS, Voice ( which we are not sure of).
Can any one give some guidance of getting the output format set to SMS or Voice?
Also, how to acheive Multi Channel output based on a value in the input extract file? ( Using multiple FSIUSER.INI??)
    Thanks
    Arumugam

    Hi Arumugam,
I am assuming you are actually inquiring about Oracle Documaker Enterprise v12.0.1.
If so, there is a Reference Implementation Master Resource Library (RI-MRL) that comes out of the installer and is referenced in the Documaker Enterprise Installation Guide, with examples for the different Distribution types and settings including example XML inputs that trigger batches for SMS and others.
Input controlled output distribution is done via the batching configuration in the Administrator and data mapped to the database tables in the schema. Recipients are selected based on the batch configuration, via the Selection Criteria Rule, which allows you to use any metadata from the input that is mapped to be distributed to one or more batches. The Batch configuration defines the output and distribution options, see "Including Recipients in a Batch" section of the Administrators Guide documentation.
If you review the Documaker Enterprise Administration Guide for SMS references you will find a section entitled Setting the Distribution Options. There is out-of-the-box SMS support through SMTP-SMS bridge (see UseEmailForSMS in the Administrator Guide) where you provide the email address in the input stream for the SMS message delivery. If you want full fledged SMS and Voice message support directly via phone numbers through the various wireless carriers I recommend you review offerings such as Oracle User Messaging Serivice (UMS) (e.g. http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E14571_01/integration.1111/e10224/ns_intro.htm) . Documaker Enterprise has a built in integration with UMS services (see UseSMSService in the Administrator Guide) but also has integration points to allow for other integration so if there is a messaging service that your customer(s) prefer or own the Output Publisher component offers extensibility to map user classes to mime types (user defined or standard) to push out data to the desired endpoint.
    Regards.
