Output separation for !-- -- ? web settings? rewrite source?

where do i control the output separation outside/inside value for "<!-- -->"
this is driving me crazy trying to figure this out, please help!

i'm trying to set "<!-- -->" during rewrite source to be on its own line.
like for example, i can either have my div tags be...
< div>
hello world
< /div>
or
< div>hello world< /div>
company i'm working w/ is really strict w/ placing comments into its own line. since i'm the layout guy, i do massive containers and css. need to be able to pass clean and nicely formatted code to the next guy.
so where in the world in the GUI of GoLive do i go tweak how <!-- comments --> into its own line?

  • CS4 - Save for Web settings

I'd be grateful for confirmation that I am using the correct Save for Web settings to achieve the colour effect I want.
I am using an sRGB workflow as my output is for the web. I am using a NEC 2690 LCD display which is wide colour gamut but I am using in its factory set sRGB (and non-calibratable) mode. I have calibrated the NEC using my Eye One display and this shows as the default monitor profile in the vga card's driver but what effect it is actually having I am not sure (OS is Vista 32bit). My CS4 colour management settings are based round the sRGB Working Space. Normally I convert to sRGB all images before saving them in Save for Web.
I am trying to ensure that the colours I see in images at the Save for Web stage preview are what I will see on the web and in other non colour managed environments. Specifically, I'd be grateful to know if the following settings seem right for what I am trying to achieve:
    Preset: JPEG High
    Quality: High
Optimize selected (but not Progressive or Embed Colour Profile)
    Convert to sRGB selected
    Preview: Use Document Profile
In the past (pre-CS4) I've had problems with images outside of CS3 looking over colour saturated and I want to avoid this now.
Thanks for any help with this.

That's good, though you you should still try to get the image filesize as small as possible without losing important image details. Many images can support a lower quality JPG setting so you should see how low you can go before you visually see a problem. No sense delivering a higher quality JPG if it's not needed. Higher quality = larger file sizes = longer download time for the webpage.
    > Optimize selected (but not Progressive or Embed Colour Profile)
I prefer 'Progressive' as that loads an image in 3 stages (low->med->fullRez) and looks better on webpages instead of having images load top-to-bottom like a window shade.
    > Convert to sRGB selected
Doesn't hurt to leave it on. Though you said you already converted them before saving for web.
    > Preview: Use Document Profile
I think that "Windows (No Color Management)" will display a better preview of what to expect when the image is displayed on a Windows computer (95% of your visitors) using a web browser that's not color managed (ie: 99% of the windows web browsers - are there any?).
    > In the past (pre-CS4) I've had problems with images outside of CS3 looking over colour saturated and I want to avoid this now.
The previous step should help with this in that you'll at least see what visitors using a decently calibrated monitor will see. But since there really is no standard that most of the world adheres to, you can only do your best to get things right at your end. You cannot control how the rest of the world adjusts or miss-adjusts their equipment.

  • Deleted default Photoshop CS5 Save for Web settings, but they return after a restart

How do I permanently delete the default Save for Web settings that come with Photoshop CS5? (Default Settings.iros, Background Image.iros, etc)
In CS4 you deleted them once, and they were gone. In CS5, if you delete them, they are recreated when you restart PS. Same goes for any Optimized Settings (GIF 32 Dithered.irs, JPEG Low.irs, etc), they simply can't be permanently removed, and I'm left scrolling through a long menu of things I'll never use.
I have no use for XHTML.iros, GIF 32 Dithered.irs, or any of these settings, just like I have no use for most of the stock presets in PS, why can't I customize these presets like I can customize everything else?

Yes, they are, how do I stop that?
I don't know that you can.
Ok, we have a way to save them, but not delete them, so what if I accidentally Save one I don't want? Or what if I Save one now, but later don't want it anymore. We're supposed to infer Adobe didn't intend us to ever Delete custom settings we Saved ourselves?!
I suppose there's an implication that you'll be given the defaults by Photoshop, but that anything you create yourself can be deleted by yourself.  I admit it's not a very clear interface.  For what it's worth, my own applications provide an explicit "Delete" capability, have defaults that don't manifest as actual files (and are always at the top of the list), and the app doesn't allow you to even try to delete the application-provided settings (Delete is grayed-out).  I thought the whole settings thing through and tried to make sure it was more clear than parts of the Photoshop interface:
    > Have you found some documentation from Adobe that states that you can effectively customize your installation by deleting these files?
    Yes, in the FAQ: http://forums.adobe.com/thread/375776?tstart=0
Well, from what I can see that thread was written by someone other than an Adobe Employee, and it doesn't mention .iros files at all.
And what it seems to say is that you can reset your preferences to defaults (i.e., invoke auto-generation of a new prefs file) by deleting the old prefs file, which is what's happening for you.

  • Diagnosing output PDF-for-Web problems?

Where I work, we accept PDFs from clients (most using InDesign) and do a conversion so their magazines are accessible via devices like the iPad. Since our software converts pages to images, all layout is preserved. Our online reader allows magazine visitors to zoom in, so page resolution has to be about 144 pixels. We have one unhappy client who insists that we've done something different with their most recent two magazines that has caused degradation in quality. I've zoomed in on an image in one of their older magazines and its most recent version in a newer edition, and confirmed that the recent version looks pixelated and has excessive contrast/saturation. However, 1) None of our other clients have this problem despite their magazines being run through the same software, and 2) the settings inside our software have not been changed in more than a year.
I figure I have two options. Either look at the PDFs they sent us and figure out what they're doing wrong (their graphic designer has limited experience) or find a spec sheet somewhere that lists the best InDesign PDF output settings to use for Web reading (including retina screens), and send those settings to their designer.
Problem is, I don't know how to analyze a PDF, and my search for the optimum InDesign output settings leads me down several different roads. Can't really test it myself because we rarely use InDesign at our end.  Suggestions?

Why not run a preflight check in Acrobat Pro? You can set up a check for images of less than x ppi.

  • Save for web settings not holding (Mac)

I am trying out PE 9. When I use Save for the Web the settings are always at JPEG/Low. I use JPEG/High, but I cannot get PE to save the settings for other files. I tried deleting all Adobe preferences files, including the one for Save for Web, but it had no effect. Any suggestions?

Thanks Garry. I tried both methods without success. It works only for the same file, but not new files. I had looked for solutions to this issue in this forum and tried them all. If this is indeed a bug, it's appeared in earlier versions of PE. What I want to do is be able to set the Save for the Web settings for each new file I open in PE, just like I can do under Preferences for other elements. Any other suggestions?

  • Audio output levels for web compression...

What is the highest db setting to use when outputting from Premiere. I just started using it and I did a few test for web compression and the audio seemed low.
I tried some material that I had editied in FCP and setting the same levels for output and it gave me different results.
What is highest we should go at peak level? -3.
Worked with FCP and Soundtrack Pro so I kinda have a system worked mixing audio. Just need to transfer to Premiere.
    Thanks in advance

Already, you have gotten three answers, expressing three personal choices. They are somewhat close, but each differs by the editor.
I am glad that you are asking, because one of my really big pet-peeves is to find a tutorial, that I really want to view, only to have an ad, that runs before the tutorial hit at about +6dB above the Audio levels of the tutorial (like ads on many TV broadcasts), and I have to quickly attenuate the Volume, only to have to ride the Volume up, to hear that tutorial. This can be really painful, if I am working with my headphones on.
Though not directly related to your specific question, I find that most DVD's, and BD's have the Intro, and Menu Audio set too loud. When doing authoring, I attenuate the Audio for both down, to slightly below the Levels of the actual disc. I want those to be "background" only, and never want users running for the Volume control.
Good luck, and hope that you do find a "sweet spot," that works for your material.

  • Output options for Web module

I have several suggestions to improve web gallery output using the Web and Print modules.  First, and most important, should be the options to "Preview and Save", and "Export and Upload".  With these options, when an event like an upload error occurs, the entire gallery doesn't have to be re-processed.  Example:  I attempted to upload a gallery of 400 photos this morning.  After an hour or so, the remote server closed the connection causing me to have to recreate the entire gallery from the start, and another hour lost. Having the option to save the gallery locally in addition to previewing or uploading would be really practical.
Second, I'd like to have the ability to add info to the grid pages (html gallery), such as file name or rating.  A simple drop down menu in the Site Info column...
Finally, how 'bout the ability to add text to the top of a contact print? Example: say I'm printing a grid of selected images from a shoot.  I'd like to be able to add identifying info to the top of that printed sheet as well as file info such as file name with each photo.

    Rob,
The 9401 is bidirectional, and when set to input, will function as a tristate output.  There are a couple of things to keep in mind with this module: 1) When set to input, the lines still have a weak pulldown resistor with a min. value of 45 kOhms, as specified in the manual.  2) Line direction may only be controlled in banks on the 9401.  This means that DIO 0:3 must all be set to the same direction, and 4:7 must all be set to the same direction.  I don't have enough information about your setup to know if this will provide a complete solution.
Please post any additional questions, or more details about your application if you're still not sure whether or not this solves your needs.
    Thanks,

  • Ideal save for web settings

When using the "Save for web" out of Photoshop, what are some things to consider when saving an image with transparency? So many options and combinations, it's hard to know which setting to use.

You are most likely going with PNG-24 (GIF and PNG-8 are older formats).  Use "preview" ("optimized" pane as you select various options, that will show correct image preview.  Obviously, you have to start with RGB @72dpi, that's a given.  Once you select "transparency" checkbox for PNG-24, you should be all set.  If image doesn't appear correctly in preview, it should be edited in Photoshop.  Good luck.

  • Output files for Web Help

I am new to Robohelp. I am using Robohelp 8 and FrameMaker 9 for TC 2 on Windows XP.
Previously I used Webworks Publisher 2003 to convert my project and the output was put into one folder. I'm having difficultly figuring out how to do that with Robohelp 8. Right now it is putting each converted page in a separate subfolder with a *.css file. I don't even need the *.css file for each file because I just use one *.css file for the whole project.
So, for example, if I convert a FrameMaker book called BigBook.book and it has these files:
    -ScreenA.fm
    -ScreenB.fm
    -ScreenC.fm
Then, I want Robohelp to put all of the converted book files in a folder called "Output" with the names:
    -ScreenA.htm
    -ScreenB.htm
    -ScreenC.htm
Why? This help is contextual and I hand it over to the developers for the help. When the end-user clicks the help button, the GUI has a script that looks in one folder for a *.htm file that matches the *.jsp file of the GUI.
Sorry if this has been asked before. I looked around, but I could not find anything.
    Thanks,
    M.Hess

    Welcome to the RH forums.
Can you clarify for us whether you are linking a FrameMaker document to your RoboHelp project and updating the content, or importing your FrameMaker documents? It sounds like the later.
In this case, what you can do is create a folder in your RoboHelp project called "Output". Before you import your FrameMaker documents, select this folder in your Project Manager pod. This ensures that any imported files are placed inside that directory. As you already have files you've imported, you can move them to a directory as you see fit. Just create an "Output" folder and click and drag the files into it in the Project Manager pod.

  • PS CS6 action save for web error

In Photoshop CS6 actions when we save the image as JPEG through save for web it doesn't work when we run it, instead it runs and saves the image as HTML, i guess some error in it. I tried it again and again but it doesn't remember my save for web settings and saves the images as HTML.

It a new bug in CS6 though when you recorded the action you saved jpeg images to you desktop and you only entered file names onto the save for web action steps the action recorder recorded name.html.  I replaced you save for web steps on my machine for my desktop and CS6 recorded  name.html.  I then did the same with CS5 though I only entered names CS5 recorded name.jpg.
If you expand the export steps tou will see the hard coded file names and extention
An action like this will always save the same files it can not be batch because you recorded Path and Names in the save for web steps.  The .html files saved on with CS6 are actually jpeg files and if you rename them hrom name.html to name.jpg you can use them,

  • Blurry smart objects in Photoshop Save for Web jpegs

I create graphs, etc in Illustrator, place them as Smart Objects in a master Photoshop file before outputing Save for Web jpegs to use as PowerPoint slide backgrounds. Everything created in Illustrator or Photoshop through that process (Quality 80 or 100 with any of the SfW options on or off) Save for Webs are blurry when imported (at 100%) into PowerPoint. The only way I have been able to get anything crisp in PowerPoint was saving a Photoshop pdf. However, that was only the text created in Photoshop. The Illustrator Smart Object part was still blurry. Anyone have any idea on the best process to combine Photoshop and Illustrator files into one file for import into PowerPoint as a clean, crisp background? At this point I am open to all suggestions.

There are parts that are being added in Photoshop, hence going from Illustrator through Photoshop as a Smart Object and then onto PowerPoint. If I wasn't 5 months down the line and just nearing deadline, I would recreate everything in Illustrator. Assuming that I have to continue at this point down the Illustrator through Photoshop line of working, how do you designate pngs or jpegs to be 220ppi. Jpegs have a 1-12 quality (and 12 is still blurry).
Note regarding PowerPoint, I embed the full-page image into the background so others that are using this can't move (by accident or on purpose) the background.

  • Color difference between PNG and JPG in Save For Web

I am working on a website and I while building images for the site I am using a mix of png and jpg images. When I "Save for Web" the same source image creates two different color images when I save them as either png or jpg. How do I make sure the images are saving with identical colors in both png and jpg. Thanks

    >My working space is Adobe RGB but I'm not opening the sRGB PNG into Adobe RGB. I am choosing "Leave as is (don't color manage)" this should preserve the PNG's RGB numbers.
are you certain it is not being converted when you open it?
The numbers you quoted are the numbers I get if I open an untagged sRGB image into Adobe RGB (assuming Adobe RGB), and then convert to sRGB.
If I open my sRGB images, either PNG or JPEG, into sRGB, they always match. I've been working on a web site for the past 3 weeks, doing this regularly.
If you are working in Adobe RGB with sRGB images that are not tagged, you add a level of complexity that requires you make the right decision at every step. You need to open them without conversion, then assign sRGB, to keep working.
Or just open the images in Firefox 2, which cannot color manage, and see if the sRGB jpeg and the sRGB PNG match. This is the acid test.

  • Save for web marks document as modified

When you save a document for web it considers the document to have been modified and will prompt you to save when closing. This is kind of annoying behavior because the document isn't actually modified; it adds an extra step of dismissing a save dialog and also can put you in doubt as to whether you have actually made unsaved changes.
My understanding of this 'feature' is that illustrator considers you to have changed the 'export settings' for the document hence the requirement for saving, This would be fine except that it doesn't actually save your export settings, so if you don't want to use the defaults it will continuously prompt you to save the document every single time you export it for web even if you are plugging the same numbers into the export dialog.
I'd really like to see this fixed, its a small thing but it costs me a lot of time when exporting lots of documents.

I agree the confusion is annoying to get a save box even if you have not changed any export settings. When printing a document this works fine as I only get an asterisk after the filename, when I change a print setting. Since many people miss the asterisk par twill post a screenshot.
I am getting different results that you on Mac CS6 for save to web. It appears the ave for web settings are actually within the document such as compression format, number of colors, matter color. Gets quite confusing because when you create a new document it seems to use the last settings used.
You may want to look into actions if you have a folder of documents needing save for web, as that works well once set up.

  • Original file turns modified after "Save for Web-"

    Hi everyone!
    I'm with a little question.
What happens to the edited file after saving its copy using the “Save for Web…” command? Why the original, unmodified file turns into “changed” (with * symbol after its name)?
    P. S. The same behaviour is in the Illustrator.

It's because the original file did get changed, because the Save for Web settings were changed. Photoshop saves most Save for Web settings so that the next time you use Save for Web, you don't have to set all the options from scratch.
I tested this by opening a file and using Save for Web without changing any settings, and that time the original document did not ask me to save before closing.

  • Adobe Save for Web and Devices Error

I had a problem with Save for Web and Devices in Photoshop CS4 - and am posting the solution for anyone else that might encounter this (posted previously for Mac but not Windows). This problem suddenly occurred - and I'm not sure why. I had the most updated Photoshop CS4 version: 11.0.2.
Issue: When I tried to overwrite an existing image using Save for Web and Devices, I received an "Adobe Save for Web & Devices Error": "Could not write the file. A file system error has occurred"
This error prevented any file (originally created using Save for Web &Devices) from being saved again with the same name. I figured out the solution by finding the resolution for Mac Photoshop and adapting it for the PC version. The solution for me was to delete the following files:  "Default Settings.iros" and "Recently Used Optimizations.irs" (the only two files present) in the following directory:
    C:\Documents and Settings\[user profile name]\Application Data\Adobe\Adobe Illustrator CS4 Settings\en_US\Save for Web Settings\
Note that there were other sub-directories of the "Save for Web Settings" folder - I didn't touch any of those. The problem is now resolved and Photoshop seems to function normally.

Honestly, I haven't had problems with reading/writing files to/from network drives, but I have read on this forum that there are times when it causes problems for people.
And yes, if you used the command line NET USE (or the Explorer Map Network Drive) function to create the drive, it is actually using Windows Networking behind the scenes.
